Constantly and consistently thinking about Eda being the most Powerful Witch on the Boiling Isles. How it's not even hyperbole-- how Eda was so naturally talented and gifted with magic, with the Isles, that she made a whole room of doors specifically to keep learning magic because she loved it so much. How when Eda loses her magic, it's a giant beam of light that pulses in waves from the sheer FORCE of it. How Lilith Clawthorne, one of the most talented Witches from the Emperor's Coven, could not best her at her worst, because even then she was still more powerful.

And the curse takes it from her. And the coven sigils take it from her. And Lilith tries to take it from her, and even though she deeply regrets it, she succeeds.

Emperor Belos demands Eda brought to him because he knows, deep down, that she is stronger than him. How he deems her not a threat any longer after losing her magic, how she has to rebuild her own identity. How much she loves magic that she infodumps about it-- she takes out library books, she learns how ancient Witches did magic, and how much long she pours over old scrolls and maps of Bonesborough like they're old friends. How, after curbstomping Belos, she immediately opens a college about the importance of wild magic.

The most powerful Witch on the Boiling Isles-- unable to do the thing she spent so long learning to do best-- she's now teaching the next generation of witches to be even STRONGER than her-

I do really like how TOH deals with abuse with the framework they have. Even though Hunter doesn't think he's being abused, he has a few recited reasons why he doesn't leave: I can't survive on my own, nobody wants me because I'm broken, he's actually so nice to take care of me, he's the only person who understands me, Belos needs me there or something bad will happen, I don't want him to be hurt.

Since Hunter can't leave, there's a second level of thoughts he has through the show justifying his own abuse: I'm going to be replaced because I'm not good enough, I'm stupid, it's my fault that I got hit, the Titan chose me, I am hurting Belos by being broken, this is funny/ a joke, I have to do this for Belos otherwise Bad Thing.

In the realization part of Hunter's arc he starts reconsidering some of his thoughts. Steve brings up the time they were abandoned in a blizzard and Hunter dismisses it as being funny at first. He realizes it wasn't actually funny/ having your consent taken away is serious (just because it happened to Hunter by somebody he loved doesn't mean its ok). He later doubles down on the excuses until he has no way to justify it anymore and he realizes he's being abused. After the realization, Hunter refuses help and temporarily becomes homeless / has to deal with the reality of leaving his situation but finds out that a lot of the beliefs he had weren't real. Gus gives him his own lunch despite mistrusting him. Darius also contacts him and gives him a new mission to protect Luz. Hunter rebuilds his self worth slowly, and gets new hobbies and interests but occasionally relapses / still thinks he's broken and needs to hide / doesn't trust his friends. Then he has. a huge relapse because. obviously. Belos comes back and a lot of Hunter's fears get worse / he thinks he's crazy / he isolates himself and then loses his bodily autonomy and he has to combat his lack of self worth and his fears in order to even try to get out of it, knowing that it'll get him killed. And his support network is there for him, and it's . awful and devastating but they show the fuck up!!! And I. really like the ending of (this aspect) of his arc because like yeah you WILL find people who care about you no matter what your secrets/past is bc literally nobody cared when Hunter's secret got outed, they cared much more about his safety!! The ending is also sweet because Hunter is a pretty tragic character who ends up having their last bits of time on screen being silly with his adoptive family + support network like the reasons Hunter couldn't leave were real in some aspects but they were greatly exaggerated like. yeah he was homeless. being homeless isn't something to be ashamed of, its just a thing that happens to people. It is awful for him and traumatic and difficult to address but (most) people around him care about his safety regardless. Yea.

Personal musings

Was cleaning out my recently passed grandma's closet and pulled out a ton of silk batik baju kurung (they're super rare and expensive nowadays. One full outfit costs a minimum of MYR500). My sister wanted to take like 80% of the wardrobe but my dad said she shouldnt. Apparently the baju kurung been given the evil eye by a lot of people so they got so much bad juju on them 😭

So now we're stuck with like, approx MYR 15k+ worth of silk baju kurung no one in the family wanted lol 🧍‍♂️

some Raine Whispers headcanons because they're the GREATEST

Raine as a bard teacher at Eda's university:

they refuse to go by Mx. Whispers and insist everyone call them "Raine" ("Mx. Raine" if they must)

once a week they get together with Darius (who is an abomination teacher) and get wine drunk and bitch about being teachers

once they were making out with Eda under the bleachers to feel young again and they got caught by the grudgby team (they were mortified and couldn't look their students in the eyes for days)

Raine as a musician:

invents an instrument that Eda can play with her hook so they can do duets again

makes fun of the BATs for being band kids because they're an orchestra kid and that is obviously WAY better

wholeheartedly believes that every mistake they make while playing is actually just because their nails are too long and they would be able to play perfectly if it weren't for that (okay so this one is just projecting but still)

plays the VIOLA and holds violins in utter contempt (yes i am a violist)

one day Luz tells them she wishes she could play the drums and Raine spends the next two weeks figuring it out (also how to do bard magic on a drum kit) so they can teach Luz

When I was younger and toh started gaining popularity I was so proud and excited to see a latina girl who wasn’t white passing with short hair who gets a girlfriend be the main character of a show!

Now I’m still super happy to see Luz be Luz! But now I love seeing Raine- not because I necessarily identify as nb or use strictly they/them pronouns but I used to! And I know that younger me and my gender confusion loves to see Raine on that screen being such a big part of the rebellion and having such a sweet relationship with Eda.

I love Raines design, I love their energy and their personality and their voice! Their stage fright, their awkwardness and whining at Edas teasing, the way they like teasing her back. Their push to help others. I love hearing how natural it is for everyone to use their correct pronouns.

And their voice!! I feel like they have such a unique and equally toned voice that’s still soft and genuine. I have trouble with my voice with how inexpressive I think it is and hearing a tone similar to mine on someone as great as Raine makes me so happy.
