I had a hot girl post-Threshold Day moment reading @elephant-in-the-pride-parade's fic: HERE

Ummmmm what can I say... They're all kinda inspied from scenes in the fic... The bathrobe scene made me go Insane Wormy Mode LIKE I KNEW IT WOULD HAHAHA I'M A LITTLE PREDICTABLE. And the scene where's she's being a sad moody baby about the whole debacle and fiddling with her comm badge and staring at her reflection in its surface and feeling angsty and spiteful about it WE STAN. <3

I could say it was an excuse to tackle a very visual,,, and pivotal,,, part of the AU that I'd been super intimidated (and bashful teehee) about drawing,,, but I had so much fun with this and I'd conveniently been working up to it days prior by drawing her "evolving" lol.

I'm so grateful for this being written I'm AGAIN a little BASHFUL with content like this despite me ENJOYING IT A LOT LIKE A FREAK HAHAHA, THANK YOU ELEPHANT. <33333333333333

Oh, I haven't thought of Phoebe a lot -- and I just know her mostly from the new Autobiography of Janeway... which I didn't much like, if I'm honest.

But I guess I'll ask Phoebe how it was living with Kathryn, who she knew growing up as a loving, if overbearing older sister. To the Legend she's become.

And she would probably answer that, for her Kathryn wasn't Kathryn Janeway the Legendary Captain who brought her crew her. She'll always be Kate to Phoebe. Someone who can be both loving and also, insufferable at the same time. But also someone Phoebe can poke at.

Sometimes though, she'll glimpse at how other people see her sister. The loyal devotion, the fierce love. Phoebe was used to groups of Starfleet people coming and going in her life because of their father but the Voyager crew's devotion is something else.

Phoebe would answer she's fairly confident she knew who her sister was.

But there will be some crisis that gets too close to their family and suddenly Phoebe sees, briefly, Captain Janeway-- the Delta Quadrant Captain with flashing eyes, steely backbone and harsh orders. Meeting threats with disturbingly easy grace.

Phoebe will never share this with anyone but that was when she understood how Kate could stand against whatever horrors she faced in the Delta Quadrant. She was more terrifying than them.

I’m going to talk about The Haze.

The Haze is a Pikeuna one-shot in which Una has amnesia. I wrote it between seasons one and two, and trying to write amnesia for a character with very little backstory — when I knew more backstory was likely on the way — was difficult for me.

To explain: I got into fanfic through Voyager. My first story is from long after the series went off the air. Writing for developing canon has been a real mind-bender. With The Haze, I was admitting to myself that I could write something that would be canon-consistent … for a while … then quite likely wouldn’t be canon-consistent anymore. I think other writers learned this lesson sooner, but I finally got it with The Haze.

In that vein, for The Haze, I was working from Una’s season one description of Illyrians: “Illyrians seek collaboration with nature. By bioengineering our bodies, we adapt to naturally-existing habitats. Instead of terraforming planets, we modify ourselves. And there's nothing wrong with that.” I took that to mean Illyrians were very nature-focused. So when amnesia basically reset Una’s brain, she thinks in terms of nature analogies. I worked really hard on those and I’m really freaking proud of them to this day. Even though we saw child-Una living in a city in season two. Because The Haze was my fic to let myself use the canon I had and to try not to get upset if/when that canon would be affected by future canon.

A few more things:

This fic, because Una’s brain is missing a lot of information, was a great opportunity to play with repetition. Una can’t have a nuanced vocabulary, so her inner monologue had to reflect complex thoughts within a relatively small pool of words. I really enjoyed that challenge.

Una’s brain on factory reset … analyzing everyone around her, cataloging their faults, trying to boss them around … that was great fun.

It was really important for me that Chris set a boundary and Una, as much of a mess as she is, instantly respect that boundary. She doesn’t know she’s stronger than he is, but he knows. Her care for him even when she doesn’t know him or herself was a critical element of the story.

This fic was the first of two stories I wrote in a row in which a man shows deep respect for a woman by being quiet and letting her think. Hmmm.

As you can probably tell, I so much appreciate the opportunity to talk about this story that means so much to me. Thank you again, @elephant-in-the-pride-parade. ❤️

1. Art programs you have but don't use

I think for a while in college I had photoshop but the learning curve was a bit daunting and I knew I'd only have access to it during my time in college so I never learned how to use it. </3 I have FireAlpaca for the sole purpose of removing my traditional linework off of the scanned paper it's on, but I don't use it for art haha. There's probably easier methods of achieving this but I know I can't do it in SketchbookPro so I need it. :/

Bestiaryposting Results: Zomargon

Another fairly obvious one -- perhaps made more so by the fact that I left a couple identifying terms in. Usually I try and sift those out: e.g., for the deer I replaced "doe" with "female [X]" and for the wild ass I replaced "bray" with "call". This time Past Me apparently didn't think to replace "trumpet" or "trunk". Whoops.

General note, please forgive if this seems disorganized or rushed; I'm a bit feverish I think.

@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) took this in a truly delightful direction. The animal itself is very good, and I think the little sketches really enhance it, but the in-depth explanation of their design decisions in the linked post is what really makes it. Genuinely very charming animal in that context; I like it a lot.

@sweetlyfez (link to post here) gives us a beast complete with a warrior-tower-arrangement on its back. Genuinely a pretty good fit for the entry all around, and of course the real gem is the hairdo. Hey, the entry says it has hair, it's up to the artist to decide how to style it.

@moonygryffin (link to post here) has drawn "Mammoth Cube", which until just this moment I has no idea was a thing. Have to give it to them, though, that animal clearly has no knees and would be really easy to put a tower on top of. Good work, cube.

... dating myself a bit there... wait, that strip is still going? Huh. Anyway.

@pomrania (link to post here) has created another Strange Mammal. There's something about the stylized profile views they draw sometimes that really appeal to me. Also, the Zomargon is of course an ace icon -- it's right there in the first sentence of the entry -- so instead of carrying people into battle, it's carrying them in a pride parade. Good for them.

@coolest-capybara (link to post here) has laid out this illustration in a very appealing way, I think. I'm not a real art critic, so I can't say why, but I just like it. I also like the general design here -- both that they're giant boars with skinny stilt legs, and that the domestic and wild versions differ in the same way as domestic and wild pigs. Additionally, I'm glad someone decided to illustrate the mandrake-courtship thing, because I thought that was an interesting concept.

@cheapsweets (link to post here) gives us this nicely sepia-inked illustration. I like the little sketches; for these entries with lots of details, I think it's nice to toss some extra stuff in the margins. Also the design of the snout and tusks is just really good, in my opinion. As usual, for interesting details and design choices, please check out the linked post.

Aberdeen Bestiary time!

... well, okay, not actually. A good chunk of the entry is left, but the page with the illustration on it is missing, so we're going to the Ashmole Bestiary again.

All right, so this is obviously the elephant, but I don't like any of this.

Maybe the proportions are just off, or maybe the illustrator didn't really believe how big elephants were, but that elephant is not big enough to be carrying that tower thing and four knights. The tower is nearly as big as the elephant is!

And that guy in front doing the steering -- you can't use reins? You have to use a chain that's attached to its trunk like the world's most inconvenient nose piercing? And what is that stick for, exactly? Unacceptable.

Maybe this is my modern bias, but I really feel this could have been a very cool illustration if they weren't being gratuitously cruel to the elephant. They even gave it a distressed-looking face! Why, good sir?

I've really enjoyed your posts about Janeway as a Tactician. And was wondering... do you have any thoughts about Janeway's handling of the Borg encounters? 👀👀👀

I end up defending her a lot in Scorpion. I think given the risks she faced and the info she had, shes quite creative and clever, and continues to be in their later encounters too.

I'm glad you're enjoying my rambling posts about Janeway as a tactician! It's one of my favorite underrated skills Janeway has!

re: Scorpion -- Janeway made the best out of a bad situation and even when they found out the Borg instigated the war with 8472. But the fact was 8472 were too blinded by fury -- they point blank stated their intentions: All life will be purged and the weak will perish.

I don't see anything around it because it's better the devil they know than the devil they don't.

Plus, any force that can body the Borg cubes and a Borg planet is already terrifying. And, even on In the Flesh, an episode I don't love, 8472!Boothby also mentioned they can't be reasoned with at that time.

re: Dealings with the Borg

IMO, one of Janeway's best strategies in dealing with the Borg is acquiring Local Knowledge in the form of Seven of Nine.

Yes, Janeway's decision to keep Seven was made out of compassion, empathy, and a sense of duty to restore her individuality.

But also, Seven is the best and greatest resource Voyager has in surviving Borg space and most of Delta Quadrant. Especially since Voyager has crossed the part of space where Neelix's expertise in the Delta Quadrant is no longer relevant.

I think a lot of her tactics are good, although she did get a wee bit cocky when planning to steal from the Borg. Twice. First to steal the transwarp coil and second, to get Seven back.

In battles against the BorgJaneway's had a lot of luck on her side, a Seven's knowledge, repurposed Borg tech, playing on the defense, while keeping a good distance.

And when the time arises: Voyager hits hard, hits fast, and runs really far away.

The only Borg encounter I'm not keen on is Unimatrix Zero and that's because I don't think the two-part episode is good. Also, Delta Flyer gets sacrificed just so it can be a decoy to get Janeway, B'Elanna, and Tuvok onboard a Borg cube to be assimilated.

TLDR, Any fight with the Borg the Voyager and its crew walks away from is already great.

It must be winter OR holiday related (whichever winter or holiday you want!)

I know most of you, alongside me, cannot wait for Janeway and Chakotay reuniting Again. But this is not about Janeway and Chakotay, I'm Sorry. I made this fanart Sketch a few days ago. And I think Dal R'El and Gwyndala the Unifier is Perfect to me. They Gravitate so much, that I am glad this ship has executed well enough!! And can't wait for them to reunite too in S2 of Star Trek: Prodigy!!
