Congratulations to the 3rd place Sanctuary Life winner of our photo contest, Douglas Croft, for capturing this action shot of two elephant seals fighting in Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.
Each year between December and February, elephant seals come to shore to breed. Males – like the two seen here – arrive first and fight for territory on the beach in quick, aggressive battles. Though males may experience minor injury as a result of these battles, severe harm or lasting damage rarely occur.
Following establishment of territories, females arrive and the mating season ensues. Each pregnant female then gives birth to a single pup, who she’ll nurse for about a month before returning to sea. Our National Marine Sanctuary System really is full of life!
Check out the rest of the winning images:
For their safety and yours, remember to give wildlife plenty of space. Be observant of your surroundings- you don't want to miss the action! View our wildlife viewing guidelines: https://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/wildlife-viewing/

Passing the Time C7A8298 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: A few female elephant seals pass the time relaxing on the beach at Whale Point in the Falkland Islands. Of course, time passed isn’t complete without some form of entertainment. Since elephant seals don’t have cellphones, books, or TV, they most commonly entertain themselves with some form of friendly sparring. I imagine that these relatively nonviolent encounters prepare them for the rare moments when true defense measures are needed. Long periods of sleep were punctuated with occasional eye opening, warning gapes, and the rare inchworm-like movements along the beach. It was a truly intriguing and relaxing day.

pit stop alert 🚨 the elephant seal vista point in San Simeon along highway 1
fun facts 👇🏻 🦭 the best time to visit the lookout is January, April, October or fall and winter 🦭 there are seals at the rookery year round; however there are peak times 🎟️ this is the only rookery in the world that is easily accessible, free and open to the public every day 📏 adult males can reach 16 ft in length and weigh up to 5,000 pounds 🌊 when the elephant seals leave the shore, they swim up north to Washington, even Alaska without stopping then return to the rookery 🏖️ when they're at the rookery, they're resting and/or breeding and barely leave the shore since they swim non-stop

Yokai Hybirds yokei Godneu
This is of course canons for yokei godneu
Yokai despite their different looks and origins, can all breed with each other, of course, breeding with a species of yokai outside their own, does result in a lot of various hybrid yokai, a rise showing up after the dark ages.
The most common yokai species to perform hybridization with other yokai is the harpy and tengu species, leading to the griffon, griffox (harpy+kitsune), Quetzalcoatl, owlbear, hippogriff, siren (harpy + mermaid), and many others.
Mermaids are also prone to hybridization, creating the siren, sea-bear, sea-goat, merocto (scylla+mermaid.), minocampus (mermaid + Minotaur.) hippocampus, and more.
Other hybrids include the ones which have two animals as part of their name, like the tigershark, turtledove, rhinobeetle, mantisshrimp, leopardgecko, hoppermouse, elephantseal, and zebramussel.
If more than 2 yokai are mixed, they usually are called chimeras, due to how many yokai are mixed in, but some do have actual names after the 2 yokai hybirds, like the Sphinx, nue, and manticore.

You know what day it is... It's #TwoTruthsTuesday!
Every Tuesday, we will provide you with two truths and one lie. Which of these three statements isn’t true about the northern elephant seal, found in Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary?
1. The northern elephant seal is the largest of the “true” seals in the Northern Hemisphere.
2. Northern elephant seals can reach weights of 2.5 tons.
3. Northern elephant seals spend half their life in the ocean, and half on land.
Let us know in the comments!

A Loud Roar 6U8A1704
flickr
A Loud Roar 6U8A1704 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: Male elephant seals (or bulls) wallow just off the beach at Whale Point in the Falklands. These large seals are well over 10 feet in length and weigh upwards of 2 tons. Although most of the seals seem undisturbed by our presence, this large male lets out a loud, belch-like, roar. Perhaps, to tell us to keep our distance or simply to notify others of its presence. If their size doesn’t conduce you to keep your distance then the smell in the wallow most assuredly will!

What’s Macintyre have to do with me? Well, I was on a beach north of Davenport and took some pictures of the bike. As I was doing so some ladies were pushing a dog kennel on balloon tires, so I assisted with pushing the cart from behind all the way up to the top near the road. Went back for the bike, and returned to help load this baby elephant seal on to the bed of their truck. They asked “What do you want to name it, so you can follow along on its journey while we take care of it” I said “MacIntyre would be great!” #fatbikeamerica #fatbikeadventure #fatbikepacking #marinemammalrescue #mammalrescue #themarinemammalcenter #elephantseal #elephantsealpup #babyseal #seal (at Franklin Point) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp6-j3Yu2qf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
