THE VULTURE HUNT Artwork by Wouter Florusse
The Vulture King fell as well. When he failed to take Nightsong from Lady Ellyn Caron, he abandoned the pursuit and marched west—only to be attacked on the road by Lady Caron, the mutilated and vengeful Lord Dondarrion, and Savage Sam Tarly of Horn Hill. Despite allegedly outnumbering his opponents two to one, the Vulture King’s forces were undisciplined and poorly equipped. The rout that followed was remembered as “the Vulture Hunt,” and thousands died after they broke and fled. The Vulture King himself was tied between posts, stripped naked, and left to die of exposure. This marked the end of the Second Dornish War, but other Vulture Kings would appear in the decades to come, claiming the same mantle.

I was rewatching 1.02 (for fic purposes) and noticed an interesting little detail: the first Kingsguard candidate introduced to Rhaenyra is Ser Desmond Caron, son of Royce Caron. In the books, Royce Caron is the father of Elenda, wife of Borros Baratheon and mother of the Four Storms. Desmond is their brother-in-law and uncle, respectively.
In that scene, Otto advises Rhaenyra to chose a knight who can bring the crown a political alliance (though not specifically Desmond), but Rhaenyra rejects his advice and chooses Criston instead. Rhaenyra rejecting Desmond was foreshadowing that she would lose the alliance with the Baratheons. I can't believe I didn't put that together earlier!

Note
i just found your posts and i love youuu! can you write about the costumes of the Baratheon sisters, called Four Storms and their mother plz?
Thinking ab characters mentioned once in the fake history book>>>
Also I’ll do faceclaims/fancasts again cause those were fun
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elenda Caron was smarter than any man in or after the dance. An intelligent and reasonable woman, she was thrust into the role of lady and then regent of storms end, and had to dress seriously to be taken seriously. High necked gowns, natural waists and shapes, puffy/long sleeves, gilded and shining patterns or embroidery that showed off her rank but not overly gaudy. She’s a woman of moderation. Elenda knows how to emulate power and class and she knows how to do it all reasonably. Girlboss I love her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cassandra was the most ambitious of the sisters, scheming to try and become queen for years. She adored rich velvets and royal colors. Especially Targaryen colors. Her gowns were always full and flowing but with a tight bodice, and every inch was oft covered in fancy lace, patterns, and embroidery. She wasn’t shy or modest about the clothes she wore. And jewelry was her favorite of all. She even had Borros have a special crown made just for her, formed from delicate gold and pearls, which she frequently wore to court. Modesty? Doesn’t know her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maris was the cleverest and wittiest, but said to be the “least comely” of them. She thought frivolous, extravagant clothing did not suit her, so she preferred to wear plain shift gowns. Long, flat skirts, simple patterns, and natural shapes, waists, and sleeves. Her tendency for simplicity was half her no nonsense and skeptic personality and half her internalized insecurity. After the war, when she spurned marriage for the silent sisters, probably for some peace of mind for once, she wore their typical rough grey homespun. No longer having to worry about her appearance was a relief
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poor Ellyn is the overlooked sister. One of the only mentions of her is at the maidens day ball, when one of her sisters spread a rumor that she asked Aegon a lewd question. She was probably chasing attention and approval, deciding to emulate the elder Cassandra. She wore pretty velvets too, but in simple shapes and lighter colors due to her young age. She begged her mother to be allowed to wear her hair up like the grown women did, so that she might be noticed for once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Young Floris was the prettiest, even if she was rather frivolous. She didn’t like the shapeless clothing of the stormlands, nor did she enjoy the stiffness of fashion in kings landing. She enjoyed silks, satins, and gauzes, enjoying the way it followed around and clung to her perfectly. Borros was wrapped around her finger, ordering whatever Myrish laced or Lyseni silks she wanted, making her the standout at court and the envy of all the young women (though she may have been compared to a Essosi concubine more than once). She never grew out of this airy attitude, as ofc she died from Child by Old Man disease when she was like 16

Ladies of "Loyalty" (Ellyn Baratheon)
I am making profiles for every important woman in my Aemond x Reader series "Loyalty".
Tumblr media
Name: Ellyn Baratheon
House: Baratheon
Loyalty during "The Dance": Green
Date of Birth: 111 AC
Family:
Borro Baratheon (father)
Elenda Caron (mother)
Cassandra Baratheon (sister)
Maris Baratheon (sister)
Floris Baratheon (sister)
Royce Baratheon (brother)
Aemond Targaryen (husband)
Ellyn Baratheon was betrothed to Aemond Targaryen at the very beginning of The Dance in 132 AC. Immediately she was taken straight to Kings Landing to marry Prince Aemond. She was escorted by Prince Aemond on dragon back as Lord Borros was eager for his daughter to be married. They were married by the High Septon in the Red Keep. She started a rivalry with Y/n Tyrell as she was assumed there was an affair between the two. Ellyn attempted to accuse Y/n of being her husbands mistress but failed. This rivalry was shortly put on halt when Y/n went of to marry Jason Lannister.
Tumblr media
She resided in Kings Landing for the better part of a year. During that time she tried for a child with her husband but was unsuccessful. When Aemond took Harrenhal Ellyn went with him. There he met Alys Rivers. Ellyn also believed he was having an affair with her. Things got worse when Y/n Tyrell fled to Harrenhal, with child.
Tumblr media
At this point Ellyn became ill with an unknown disease. She started to waste away. Her older sister Maris eventually came to be with her. Ellyn died in 133 AC, a year and a half after her marriage to Prince Aemond. She was buried in Harrenhal, her family never asked for the remains to be returned.

House Baratheon Aesthetic
During the Dance of the Dragons, House Baratheon was led by Lord Boros Baratheon. He was married to Lady Elenda Caron and from her had four daughters, known as the Four Storms: Cassandra, Maris, Ellyn, and Floris. While the battle of succession for the Iron Throne raged on Lord Boros himself was in a crisis as he lacked a male heir.

A NEW DAWN AT COURT Artwork by Lily Abdullina
But while some left the city, many others flocked to it ahead of the royal coronation of Aegon and his promised bride, Aegon II’s daughter Princess Jaehaera. Among those to arrive were Lady Johanna Lannister and her father Lord Roland Westerling; Lord Lyonel Hightower and Lady Sam; the High Septon (traveling separately from Lord Hightower, due to Lyonel’s incestuous relationship with his stepmother); the Baratheon sisters Cassandra, Ellyn, and Floris, escorted by Lady Elenda’s father Lord Royce Caron; Ser Alyn Velaryon; Ser Medrick and Ser Torrhen Manderly with a hundred knights from White Harbor; and many from more far-flung places, including emissaries from six of the Nine Free Cities and three splendid, feather-cloaked princes from the Summer Isles.
On the seventh day of the seventh moon of 131 AC—an auspicious and holy day according to the Faith—the High Septon performed the marriage rites atop Visenya’s Hill for all the city to see. Prince Aegon was wed to Princess Jaehaera, which was met with a roar of approval from the tens of thousands who witnessed it. The newlywed Targaryens were then carried to the Red Keep, where Aegon was crowned with a plain golden circlet and declared Aegon the Third of His Name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, and the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. It was a lavish occasion—although the dragons that once flew triumphantly on such festive occasions were absent: a loss that House Targaryen would feel in the years and decades to come.

Hi! I hope you’re doing well, I had another question. This may be implausible/unlikely, but since Harry Hardyng is related to Lady Anya Waynwood, who seems (at least I thought) to have some sympathy and respect for Sansa, depending on the potential Sansa-Harry marriage, she might take Anya on as an advisor or part of her support base when returning to Winterfell? I’m mostly asking because I like Lady Anya, and it would be cool if she got to remain in Sansa’s story.
I think Anya Waynwood will join Sansa to go north, for l even more basic reasons than you suggest. Remember that Littlefinger’s explicit plan is to have Robert Arryn die sooner rather than later (accomplished through his, Littlefinger’s, own poisoning of the boy), marry Harry to “Alayne”, then reveal “Alayne” as Sansa Stark, rightful heiress to Winterfell, banking on the chivalric ideals and martial boredom of the Vale’s military aristocracy to carry them to Winterfell. Anya Waynwood has no reason not to participate in this plan: whatever she thinks of Littlefinger personally (an opinion perhaps somewhat tempered by Littlefinger’s financial exploitation of her), she is bound both by her feudal position within the Vale and her socio-familial connections to Harry to support him and Sansa - and if the new Lord of the Eyrie (who is also her first cousin once removed and foster son) wills his vassals to secure his new wife her inheritance, well, the Lady of Ironoaks is exactly in the position to lead her forces in such a mission. (Nor do I think that it is unrealistic for a ruling lady in her own right to lead her troops, at the very least in a ceremonial way, in a military campaign: Ellyn Caron did so against the Vulture King during the reign of Aenys I, and Arwyn Oakheart did the same in Renly’s campaign.) What that means for Lady Waynwood when all the Stark kids, and their various factional supporters, stumble on each other at Winterfell, though, is anyone’s guess (though I can imagine she might be used by those rival factional supporters as evidence of Sansa’s “foreignness” and thus ineligibility to rule), nor her role when (not if) Sansa finally brings down Littlefinger.

"I have never been as far south as Nightsong. I suppose it would be even warmer than this, wouldn't it? Hard to imagine, really." Myranda smiled, hands clasped tight behind her back, desperate to keep herself on track talking about something other than the wedding. All conversations seemed to circle back to the main points, and while she, along with the rest of the Keep, were hungry for answers, she did also hunger for information of a different kind. "I did read a book once about the Vulture King's attack on Nightsong, and his eventual defeat, at the hands of Ellyn Caron. I couldn't put it down, and finished it well into the darkest hour of the night."

Can you talk more about Ivan the Terrible and how he could be used for inspiration for Maegor? I’m a little upset by how much of a caricature some ASOIAF characters are. Maegor had such potential. Also, we know in canon he fought pirates & the Giant of Trident so wouldn’t this make him independently rich (lands & reward & offices from the King) and popular with the Smallfolk? Then he was doing damage control for Aenys too. Maegor was probably upset all his hard work wasn’t acknowledged.
Sure.
If Maegor was more like Ivan the Terrible he’d be a capable general and administrator in addition to being prone to paranoia, bouts of murderous rage, and sadism. Furthermore, both Ivan the Terrible and Henry VIII were noted for their religious fervor so it’d be more than a little cheeky if Maegor was also very pious in his own specific way.
Indeed, given GRRM’s stated penchant for mixing and matching different historical figures/events/etc., combining Henry VIII with Ivan IV would have gone a long way towards making Maegor his own character as opposed to a flanderized caricature of one historical figure. For instance, he could have two children: 1) A daughter by his first wife (Alysanne in this case) leading him to start a religious conflict in a desperate bid to have sons and 2) A son (whether by a mistress or one of his later wives) who Maegor ends up accidentally killing in one of his psychotic episodes. (In a twist, Alysanne neither becomes Queen Regnant nor dies childless, unlike Mary I, which, in turn, distinguishes Maegor from his RL influences, both of whose dynasties went extinct.) Moreover, seeing as Ivan IV and Henry VIII were both men of culture, why not have Maegor invent the Doctrine of Exceptionalism, with Jaehaerys I then coming along and essentially dumbing it down for the masses (since I tend to imagine Maegor’s theological and philosophical arguments would either be incredibly esoteric or vaguely slippery)?
Another idea would be to make him into more of a Macbeth-like figure, with his lack of recognition standing in for the three witches’ prophecy as a catalyst.
That being said, you are correct his early exploits against Sargoso Saan and the Giant of the Trident should have made him the subject of numerous popular songs. (I genuinely wonder how Maegor the Cruel kept the peace for two straight years as Hand of the King to Aenys.)
As for being independently wealthy, that’s where we run into a major problem with F & B. Maegor is said to restore Ceryse’ rights, privileges, and incomes as both a wife and queen but nothing is spelled out in detail. Similarly, Aenys and Maegor are said to shower their supporters with gold, offices, honors, titles, and land, again without specifying anything. What really makes no sense though is that last one. The Crownlands are tiny and at no point does Yandel or Gyldayn say for example “after House Thornton was wiped out by the first Vulture King their lands, titles, castles, and incomes were split between Lord Harmon Dondarrion and Lady Ellyn Caron in reward of services rendered to the realm” with the exception of good ol’Harrenhal. What makes this especially egregious is 1) as Pennytree later shows, royal fiefs outside the Crownlands aren’t unprecedented, and 2) Royal dynasties should want to establish cadet branches yet the only person who ever thinks to formally do so is Daeron II.
Thanks for the question, anon

(gif(s) used above does NOT belong to me and I do NOT claim any rights to it)
Just hours ago, your father had forewarned you and your sisters of the stately Targaryen Prince that stood before you all now.
Throughout your childhood, you had been told many stories of House Targaryen and the questionable sanity of its family members. Apparently, or so Cassandra has claimed, a hatred had been seeded between the family after King Viserys named his eldest child, the comley Princess Rhaenyra his heir.
It's said that the hostility between family members only grew stronger after a lamentable event occurred that lead to the loss of Prince Aemond Targaryen's left eye at the hands of his younger nephew, Prince Lucerys Velaryon.
It was wrong, but after learning of what happened to the Prince all those years ago, when you were only a child, you began wondering what it was like. How you wished to experience what it felt like to take the eye of another person, to permanently maim another person.
You were immediately aware how distasteful your unusual appetite for all things dark and gruesome. No child of nine should be daydreaming of the odious murders and torture of others when breaking one's fast, or taking a bath, or when laying awake instead of trying to fall asleep.
You knew all this, but eventually the thoughts of harming others consummed you entirely. You were no longer a curious child who had heard one too many stories of morbid things before bedtime, you had become a young beast whose mind constantly thought of fantasy images of all things brutal.
"Sister," Your sweet younger sister Floris whispers out to your youngest sister, Ellyn.
In physical appearance and personality, you and your sisters are very different.
Your four sisters, two older and two younger, were nicknamed the Four Storms because of their constant and merciless bickering, while you usually stood silently to the side, unamused.
Each of your sisters shared the same untamed dark hair and remarkable blue eyes of your father. You, however, had the dark eyes and strawberry-blonde hair of your adored mother.
Floris, who is five-and-ten, is widely regared as the prettiest daughter of Lord Borros Baratheon and Lady Elenda Caron due to her thick eyelashes, plump lips, and naturally curvy body. You have been envious of Floris since your shared youth, with you being only eleven moons older than her, before you could even understand what the word even meant.
This, alone, is why you strongly suspect Prince Aemond will choose your sweet younger sister as his bride tonight.
If you am correct in my prediction, Maris will surely be upset. Maris, who is only a year older than you, had been yearning to be in a place of high power since her childhood. Always wanting to use her intelligence to become powerfully and wealthy. So, becoming the wife of a Prince, like the stoic young man listening to our father's ramblings, is just what she needs to achieve these life-long goals.
Everything was going smoothly, with the white haired Prince staring expectantly at each of you, his impressive sword proudly poking out from behind his black leather cloak.
A hand came to rest on your stomach in an attempt to pacify the uncomfortable nerves shooting through your body as the Prince's intimidating purple eye began to gaze upon you silently.
The intensity of his stare felt like a challenge to you, purple and black clashing together in a silent demand to keep eye contact.
The tranquility inside the icy interior of Storm's End was interrupted by the fortuitous arrival of the timid Prince Lucerys.
A pup of a man, your father's voice mocks in your head.
"Prince Lucerys Velaryon," A voice introduced the young boy.
Prince Aemond turned away from you, something dangerous glinting in his beautiful eye as he looked at his newly arrived nephew.
"Son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen." The man finished, thunder sounding off somewhere in the distance.
Involuntarily, your eyes narrow at the dark haired Prince, immediately understanding why the bastard has made an appearance. No doubt acting as a loyal messenger for his mother, trying to remind who swore themselves to the late King Viserys' eldest born.
"Lord Borros, I have brought you a message from my mother," The pup finally speaks up, his jaw clenching slightly, "The Queen."
You can feel laughter bubbling in your throat at his impressively brave, but stupid words. You have no personal quarrel with Princess Rhaenyra and would love nothing more than to finally see a woman rule, to see a Queen sit the Iron Throne. But, you are no fool. You ade aware, thanks to your father's enjoyment of hearing himself speak, what is likely to become of the kingdom if a woman was to rule.
"Yet earlier this day, I received an envoy from the King. Which is it?" Your father jokes, his hands wrapping impatiently around the arms of his seat, "King or Queen?"
A titter spills from your throat, the same suppressed laugh that had been waiting to be released.
Prince Aemond turns his head to stare at you once again, a tight smirk playing on his lips as words begin flying out of your mouth in a sneer as you look up to my father, "The House of the Dragon does not seem to know who rules it."
You have nothing against Prince Lucerys or anyone else from the noble House Targaryen, but your eyes still desperately search my father's face. The strong desire to please your father has blurred right and wrong since you were a toddler.
Your heart lifts in your chest as your father, and your two oldest sisters, crease up at your deride towards the younger Prince.
When you finally look away from your father, you notice the intense but welcoming stare from Prince Aemond.
For just a moment, you feared maybe he disliked you now, but then you quickly remember his feelings for you are worth nothing as he will not choose you to wed.
"What's your mothers message?" The demanding voice of your father pulls you from your distraction.
Prince Lucerys reaches inside his red cloak, successfully pulling out a tightly rolled letter from within.
Your throat dries in anticipation, dark eyes glancing to the tall Prince standing slightly in front of you for just a moment before watching the important letter be handed off to your father.
He holds the unopened paper before raising his voice in annoyance, "Where's the bloody maester?"
Your eyes fall onto one of the people standing neatly in the distance. A pressure begins to form in the middle of your eyebrows as his eyes meet yours for a second, sensing your stare before scurrying to your father, the satisfying panicked tapping of his poorly polished shoes echoing his embarrassment throughout the tenebrous castle.
Now tired of waiting to learn the contents within the letter delivered by Prince Lucerys, you look to your sweet sister Floris who stands silently to your right, symbolizing to Prince Aemond that you are older than she is.
She playfully raised her eyebrows at tou once your eyes meet, her blue eyes glancing to the boy pup and to you again.
You eyes roll at her silent question, her smile is interrupted by your father's sudden outburst. His anger was visible in the way his pupils expand to devour almost all the blue of his iris'.
"King Aegon at least came with an offer; my swords and banners for a marriage pact. If I do as your mother bids, which one of my daughters will you wed," He glances over to you and your sisters for a moment, "Boy."
You can almost taste the panic swell inside the young Prince, his chin raising slightly in an attempt to calm his nerves before responding.
"My lord, I am not free to marry. I am already betrothed."
Your father lets out a deep sigh, "So, you come with empty hands. Go home, pup. And tell your mother that the Lord of Storm's End is not some dog that she can whistle up at need to set against her foes."
Your eyes dart from your father to the younger Prince who stands silently, trying desperately to stay brave in the face of such harsh rejection.
After taking in a small breath to steady himself, Prince Lucerys claims, "I shall take your answer to the Queen, my Lord." His brown eyes narrowing slightly at his soundless uncle.
The One-Eyed Prince smirks humorlessly at his pug-nosed nephew, his sharp jaw clenching in clear annoyance.
Your eyes close shut as the bastard Prince begins to leave, the tightness enveloped around your chest slowly leaving, much to your distaste.
"Wait," Prince Aemons demands, his voice alone stopping his family member from leaving and forcing your eyes to open again, "My Lord Strong."
A satisfied smile spreads on your face, deep dimples forming effortlessly at the domineering jest.
You watch the young Prince quietly as he turns to face his uncle.
"Did you really think that you could fly about the realm trying to my brother's throne at no cost?" The Prince of Old Valyria colours speaks again, his polished black shoes slowly tapping the hard floor.
Quickly, Prince Lucerys says, "I will not fight you."
How unfortunate, you think as your eyes narrow at the boy just barely younger than yourself.
"I came as a messenger, not a warrior."
Your head tilts to one side, making some of your hair fall from it's near place tucked behind your ear as you let a scoff escape into the air, "Prince Lucerys, forgive me but, you do not actually believe yourself fit to fight, do you?"
The secondborn son of Princess Rhaenyra looks at you, his dark eyebrows creased in worry at your comment, likely detecting your threatening tone.
Feeling the stare of the first Prince to arrive in Storm's End, you look at him, expecting to be greeted with an unwelcome glare but, instead, you are being smiled at.
A few silent seconds pass as he continues to stare at you silently before turning his head back to his eldest sister's bastard.
"I want you to put out your eye," The Targaryen Prince begins, his fingers taking ahold of the black patch covering his left eye to removing it, revealing a beautiful sapphire which has replaced the eye he lost so many years ago, "As payment for mine. One will serve; I do not wish to blind you."
You let out a quiet breath from between the small opening between your lips when Prince Aemond pulls a small dagger from his waist, only to throw it to the ground and towards his nephew.
Your hand comes to your mouth, your teeth taking the nail of my thumb between them as excitement squeezes at your heart.
"I plan to make a gift of it to my wife," Prince Aemond declares, his purple eye fixating on you for only a second.
Your head lowers slightly in thought, wondering if you had merely imagined Prince Aemond's eye on you.
"No." Was Prince Lucerys' simple answer.
Prince Aemond's long white hair fluttered lightly with the wind flowing in the great castle as he spoke, his chin raised high, "Than you are craven, as well as a traitor."
"Not here." Your father attempts to intervene the brewing argument.
Suddenly, without warning, Prince Aemond advanced forward, easily picking up the dagger he had thrown earlier, his voice much more manic from just seconds ago, "Give me your eye, or I will take it, bastard!"
Prince Lucerys took his sword out of its sheath, taking multiple steps back as fear contorts his face.
"Not in my hall !" Your father yells out, standing up from his seat made of stone as his eyes look between the two young Princes.
Prince Aemond stops his aggressive approach, the dagger tight in his hands as his eyes continue to stare holes into the bastard Prince.
"The boy came as an envoy." He reminds the roomful of people, but mostly Prince Aemons whose chest heaves, "I'll not have bloodshed beneath my roof."
You look to your father's tense frame, eyes narrowing at him, disappointed in the sudden halt of action between the two feuding Princes.
"Take Prince Lucerys back to his dragon."
When nobody dares to move, scared to disturb the calmness washing over, almost, everyone now that the fight has been stopped before it could get any more dangerous.
"Now." He demands coldly.
And so, the guards do as they are told.
As the knights escort the young Prince through the great doors of Storm's End, you watch the back of Prince Lucerys' head carefully, thinking fondly of the sudden flavor of death melting on your sharp tongue.
You can taste the satisfying, chaotic, calamitous losses and defeats the near future holds for the House of the Dragon.
