An alternative to google docs
To paraphrase a recent post: google docs is pants as a writing tool.
I'm suggesting MS Word as an alternative. Yeah, I know, it's not perfect, but it is (IMO), better than google docs.
But I'm not just suggesting Word when I suggest Word. I'm suggesting a free Microsoft account, which gives you Word and OneDrive.
It only takes a minute or two and a free account gets you:
Word in the browser
A OneDrive with 5gb of storage - now, 5gb might not be much holistically but in terms of text based documents, it's decent. My entire 'Fic' folder is 2.11gb. That's everything I've ever written and all their drafts, wips and their multiple drafts, betaed fics, ideas, writing refs and guidance, archived drafts/fics, AND the 500+ fics I've downloaded as epubs from AO3).
Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneNote - basically the whole Microsoft365 suite - in the browser
I use Word exclusively, both for fic and for work (where I write extensively), and the online version does everything I need. It autosaves, has version control/reversion, and sharing (if that's what you're into), and you can seamlessly copy and paste from Word into AO3's rich text editor - no formatting adjustments required.
Anyway, it's something to think about. If you want to give it a try, the simplest way is to create a new OneDrive account, which will also give you everything else.
Go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/microsoft-365/onedrive/online-cloud-storage (clickable link)
Click 'Create a free account'.
Click 'get a new email address' and follow the prompts (recommended but not required) or use an existing email address. If you create a new email address, don't actually use it for email. It's just the umbrella the account sits under.
That's it; you're done.

Tawfik needs to buy tent covers and other necessities.
My other promos
Updated: Nov 29
Member(s): @dev-tawfik (current), @devtawfik (shadowbanned), @tawfikblog, @90-tawfik (shadowbanned)
Verification: @/90-ghost
Payment methods:
Gfm for education: PayPal, Venmo, Google Pay, credit/debit (donation match $10 USD). Focus on Kofi instead until at least mid-December
Kofi for survival (mentioned here): PayPal, credit/debit. Focus on this until at least mid-December
Tawfik is a Palestinian currently taking online classes at an Egyptian university. His Kofi campaign needs to reach $3,000 to buy tent covers and other necessities for his family (see here). Any additional funds in the gfm and Kofi will go towards the next semester's payments and family care respectively.
More info:
Now he is focusing on getting his Kofi to $3,000 (fees included) to get his family tent covers and other survival needs. See here.
Nov 27: Tawfik has reached the Kofi goal to buy flu medication and a vaccine, so we are now focusing entirely on the gfm. His goal of $10,050 by Nov 28 (hard deadline) for his international student fees were also reached on the same day.
He plans to fundraise for this year's remaining academic fees (which will be significantly less than what we already raised), and hopes that the war will end by the next year so he can get a job and pay himself.
Update Nov 20: More details here. Tawfik has fallen ill with the flu and won't be online much. He needs USD $228 (fees included) for medications and a vaccine. This requires him to reach 71% of his goal on Kofi (which is specifically for non-education related needs). At the same time, he needs $10,050 in his gfm by Nov 28 to pay off his international student fees.
Update Nov 15: We reached the halfway goal for the international student fee of USD $9,050 by Nov 15. Now going for the full fee of $10,050 by Nov 28.
Update Nov 6:
Tawfik got an extension to Nov 30 to pay the international fee. New goals of USD $9,050 by Nov 15 and $10,050 by Nov 28 (to account for transfer time) were set. The final goal was reduced with some backup money. Grades will be withheld until payment is made.
Update Nov 5:
Currently, it seems impossible to raise the required funds ($10,050 - $10,150) by Nov 13. Tawfik has emailed his school to negotiate for more time.
Update Oct 29:
Now @dev-tawfik.
The next goal was $9,250 to pay off international student fees (due Nov 13, see math section below) that Tawfik just found out about.
The family urgently needed $1,000 for healthy food (Tawfik's father has health problems and needs vegetables).
Tawfik initially wanted to use the gfm money for education only as promised, but had to add the sum to the campaign goal (a total of $10,250) because the Kofi he made solely for his family wasn't receiving many donations early on.
There were some issues with the Kofi taking a few weeks to transfer funds, but that's been resolved. It is now for support of Tawfik's family and transfers money relatively quickly.
From Oct 17-27, we fundraised to $7,200 to buy some food for the family. This food money will last roughly 2 weeks.
We are focusing back on international student fees and set a short-term goal of $8,862 in the campaign by Nov 3. There will be another small goal set after this date.
We need roughly $10,050 (an estimate) in the campaign by Nov 13 (hard deadline). Again, this isn't a concrete number and involves some usage of Tawfik's backup money.
Campaign details:
Tawfik is a software engineering student in Palestine trying to continue his education by enrolling in online classes at an Egyptian university.
He already raised roughly USD $2,500 in late July through a now closed Paypal campaign and paid the school as an application and reservation fee. This is nonrefundable.
We fundraised $4,113 (5200 - 1087) and paid off his tuition for the year on Oct 7
The gfm is meant for education only. To support the family, donate to the Kofi. It no longer faces issues with long transfer times.
Tawfik has some extra leftover funds from paying off the tuition, but it isn't much and is to be used for emergencies.
Oct 17: Tawfik bought his textbooks ($800 incl fees → $6,000 in campaign) and got a small discount for being Palestinian. This money saved went into his emergency funds.
Math:
Please let me know if I screwed up the calculation somewhere.
The transfer fee is assumed to be ~$50 per $600 earned. My bad in earlier calculations where I set it after the bank fee rather than before.
Textbooks: base $600
Funds left after:
Gfm for 40 donations: 570.6
~$50 transfer fee: 520.13
12% Bank fee: 458.13
To cover the funds lost to fees, we need an extra $200 (assumed 15 donations). After fees on that, it's only $166 (enough to cover the short-term goal)
So we need 600 + 200 = $800 for the textbooks.
This is $6,000 in the campaign.
Slightly outdated: International student fees: base $2,423
900£ = USD $1,180.93
60k EGP = USD $1,241.29
Funds left after:
Gfm fees for 160 donations: 2304.74
Transfer fee, ~$200: 2,104.74
12% Bank fee: 1852.17
To cover the funds lost to fees, we need an extra $800 (assumed 55 donations). After fees on that, it's only $625 (enough to cover the short-term goal)
So we need 2423 + 800 = $3,223 for the international student fee.
This is $9,223 10,223 in the campaign, rounded up to $ 9,250 10,250
The rate of ~$100 daily is sufficient to get us to this goal before the deadline of Nov 13 (this accounts for the 2 days needed for transfers)

Someone accessed my Gmail 2 days ago, compromising my linked accounts like Twitter and YouTube. Here's how it happened, why I fell for it, and what you can learn to avoid making the same mistake:
Tumblr media
The scam I fell victim to was a cookie hijack. The hacker used malicious software to steal my browser cookies (stuff like autofill, auto sign in, etc), allowing them to sign in to my Gmail and other accounts, completely bypassing my 2FA and other security protocols.
A few days ago, I received a DM from @Rachael_Borrows, who claimed to be a manager at @Duolingo. The account seemed legitimate. It was verified, created in 2019, and had over 1k followers, consistent with other managers I’d seen at the time n I even did a Google search of this person and didnt find anything suspicious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She claimed that @Duolingo wanted me to create a promo video, which got me excited and managed to get my guard down. After discussing I was asked to sign a contract and at app(.)fastsigndocu(.)com. If you see this link, ITS A SCAM! Do NOT download ANY files from this site.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I downloaded a file from the website, and it downloaded without triggering any firewall or antivirus warnings. Thinking it was just a PDF, I opened it. The moment I did, my console and Google Chrome flashed. That’s when I knew I was in trouble. I immediately did an antivirus scan and these were some of the programs it found that were added to my PC without me knowing:
Tumblr media
The thing about cookie hijacking is that it completely bypasses 2FA which should have been my strongest line of defense. I was immediately signed out of all my accounts and within a minute, they changed everything: passwords, 2FA, phone, recovery emails, backup codes, etc.
I tried all methods but hit dead ends trying to recover them. Thankfully, my Discord wasn’t connected, so I alerted everyone I knew there. I also had an alternate account, @JLCmapping, managed by a friend, which I used to immediately inform @/TeamYouTube about the situation
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the hackers turned my YouTube channel into a crypto channel and used my Twitter account to spam hundreds of messages, trying to use my image and reputation to scam more victims
Tumblr media
Thankfully, YouTube responded quickly and terminated the channel. Within 48 hours, they locked the hacker out of my Gmail and restored my access. They also helped me recover my channel, which has been renamed to JoetasticOfficial since Joetastic_ was no longer available.
Tumblr media
Since then, I’ve taken several steps to secure my accounts and prevent this from happening again. This has been a wake-up call to me, and now I am more cautious around people online. I hope sharing it helps others avoid falling victim to similar attacks. (End)
(side note) Around this time, people also started to impersonate me on TikTok and YouTube. With my accounts terminated, anyone searching for "Joetastic" would only find the imposter's profiles. I’m unsure whether they are connected or if it’s just an unfortunate coincidence, but it made the situation even more stressful.

fucking client emailed in requesting a license last night at 10, called today before nine asking for the license and if I could hurry this along because it was urgent; being the person that I am I went to go find some more information and discovered that the customer wants to do an in-place upgrade on a nine-year-old free license to a recent server license which is.
A) not possible with the service pack they have installed B) probably not compatible with the two kinds of software they have talking to the database C) probably not compatible with their actual server, which blew up spectacularly in January.
(all of which is to say nothing about the wide variety of possible ways to purchase and install the license, but probably standard is what they want even if they're technically too big for it)
I talk to my team, most of whom do not have much experience with upgrades/migrations for this software and we all agree that more research into their environment is needed, including possibly calls with their other software vendors and also possibly maybe replacing their twelve year old server.
Call the client at 2pm and let him know that this project is going to be more rigorous than just ordering a license, let them know that this isn't being dropped or ignored, but we need more information and will be in contact when more of the team knows what's going on.
5:14 PM, my coworker messages me "hey, do we have a tenant for this client?"
I message my coworker: "fucking lol, this is about their license, isn't it?"
It is about their license. They have sent in an emergency after hours ticket describing the issue as urgent: they have purchased the license on their own from a consumer vendor unaware of the fact that they need admin access to a tenant to download the software.
I create a tenant for the client and document the information, then provide the tenant ID.
And then since it's urgent, it's an emergency, I begin gathering data and composing an email.
The license won't populate to the tenant for hours at least and probably not for a full day.
They didn't actually tell us what license they've got, but if they plan to use it with one flavor of software they've got they probably need a secondary license they were totally unaware of.
I have found no evidence whatsoever that this license is compatible with their other software.
I hop into an after hours meeting with one of our tier three consultants to get the exact version number of the software and confirm that there is not a straightforward upgrade path between the license they have and the license they want.
I send an email advising that if their developer wants to make an upgrade they MUST back up the database because we have emergency backups, not database backups, let them know in writing "per our conversation this afternoon, this is why we don't think this will work" and thank them cheerfully, letting them know to reach out if they have questions about licensing.
hit send at half past eight.
Combined after hours work on this "emergency" "critical" "urgent" ticket is now probably about half the hardware cost of a better server.
I get that emergencies happen, but buddy if I tell you "hey, I know you are in a rush with this but we have to take our time to do this correctly" and you ignore me and make me stay late to handle your "critical" ticket, you and I both are not going to have a good time.

Hope you work day is going alright!💞
A drop-in visit from PhD!Candidate Curtis on his way back to his apartment from the university. He’s gotta run some data analysis for his thesis, but has no idea where to start. Someone said you could help him find a way?
Tumblr media
Sincerest thanks for your patience, Essie! My muse did not want to work on this for the longest time!
A/N: Reader is gender neutral. No physical descriptors used.
Warnings: college/university stress. You don't know pain until you see university students begging the printer to work faster during finals week.
Tumblr media
Today seemed to be regular day at the reference desk. You were answering emails from the mathematics faculty and students, assuring them about library holdings of their requested materials. Sometimes directing them to the LaTeX to TeX converter you'd had to make, silently cursing MathSciNet and zbMath for not converting yet. Thankfully, the library students you were monitoring at the reference desk were able to handle most of the questions that got directed at them.
At least until a tall, very handsome man with a buzzcut, wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket walks in. You keep an eye on him as he approaches the desk because he doesn't look happy and you're not about to let anyone yell at the students. Thankfully he seems polite enough, neither of the students look scared, but they do direct him to you.
Making eye contact, you motion him over and he's quick to obey.
"How can I help?"
"I'm, I'm Curtis and...my, my data is...I think it got corrupted," he removes his sunglasses and he looks completely devastated. "I can't lose this data. It's, it's my thesis."
You nod in what you hope is a reassuring manner, "do you have a copy of the data in the university servers?"
He holds out a flash drive and you grab the laptop that's never allowed to connect to the network and get it ready. When it is you hold your hand out and he gives you the drive. Plugging it in you take a few minutes to figure out what you're looking at. Some of the terminology is familiar, he's clearly not a mathematics PhD, based on the labels you're able to discern.
"Oh, I see the problem," you tell Curtis, who's looks keep distracting you from your work. "You were, understandably, trying to use data you'd picked up using our Statistica license on your home computer that has the public domain Dataplot software."
"And I'm guessing the two are not interchangeable," Curtis sighs in defeat.
"Unfortunately the metadata schemas they use for the data sets don't work well together," you nod. "The data isn't corrupted, it's just very, very messy and it would take you a lot of late nights to clean it all up again, even if you knew R."
He scratches the back of his neck, "so my data is useless?"
"You have backups, right? You didn't just keep all your data on this flash drive, right?"
"I have backups," he nods. "But it's still months of work down the drain." He raises his hands to his face, looking like he wants to cry. It's a look you're painfully familiar with given your line of work.
You unplug the drive and hand it to him, "hey, look at me." He lowers his hands a little and the pain in his beautiful blue eyes breaks your heart. "You're going to be okay. Yes, it's a lot of time you'll never get back, but it's not the end. You're going to be able to kick this data's ass and get it in line because you know what you're doing with it now. Your thesis hit a setback, it happens a lot more than people would like to admit. You're not alone and you will be able to get this done."
He seems to take your words to heart, taking a few breaths and standing up straight.
"And make sure to get yourself a treat," you add. "You're hurting and you need to take care of yourself."
He almost smiles as he nods and walks out.
🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣🔣
It's been a few months and you'd almost forgotten about the poor PhD student. You probably would have had his physique not stood out so much. The same physique you see walking towards the reference desk, but with a giant smile. You smile in return, he must've gotten his data sorted out.
He walks up to you, "I don't know if you remember me--"
"Statistical software mess, right?"
He lowers his head as his cheeks develop a pink tint, "yeah."
"I'm guessing it all worked out?"
"I'm officially Dr. Everett, now."
Your smile grows, "congratulations, Doctor!"
"Thanks, um," he rubs the back of his neck. "If, if it's not too forward, could I take you out to dinner? As a thank you?" Your eyes go wide. "It wasn't just the data, software stuff that you helped me with. I was genuinely considering just dropping out, giving up. But then you looked me in the eyes and told me I could do it and...and I want to thank you for that."
Smiling, you tell him, "I get off at 6."

Finally switched over to linux permanently
switched to firefox
enabled adblocker, sponsor blockers, and tracker removers
disabled autoplay and the recommendations sidebar on YouTube (highly highly encourage, though I still keep the homepage open so I can choose when to browse new suggested content rather than it pestering me)
downloaded all my tumblr posts and now host them parallel on my website (stuck here until we find some decentralized way of doing social media right)
cleared out 99% of my online storage to now be on multiple hard-drive backups
downloaded locally all my music
removed myself from basically every data tracking social media platform except this and YouTube
And now currently I'm trying to consolidate all my feeds into just an RSS reader.
It takes a long time and a lot of planning, but its very rewarding to take control over what you want to see, how you see it, how its formatted, ect. I find these are my steps to an easy transition off a certain service:
Download all your data and back it up. Now your account can be deleted at any time with no remorse.
Find browser extensions that enhance and modify the experience to what you might need. Use that to tangibly guide your preferences. Go ahead and remove the app on your phone if its there.
Research every alternative service and try them out. Begin moving certain activity exclusively to the alternative. Take time getting used to it and see if its better to try more alternatives.
Completely jump ship, delete the account, move all feeds or settings over.
Its an ongoing process but there's still probably a few more years of this to go through. Future plans are:
Completely remove all prior emails and self host a new one
Get off Discord entirely except for running the wiki server. It sucks that Discord is so prevalent. Probably move to various forums. Maybe look into some sort of forum management software such as how RSS feeds tame articles and videos into one place.
Setup adblockers directly into my router so ads won't even appear on phones.
Setup my phone to just straight up also run linux. There's a few mobile-designed linux platforms to look into until I decide.

I don't actually expect 4chan to stay dead. I think they'll take one or two weeks to figure out what happened and set up a new server and restore backups and then it'll be business as usual. (Unless they were already thinking of pulling the plug.) Maybe it'll turn out they didn't back up the images but that's only a big deal for the slowest boards.
Same thing happened to 8chan at one point (hacker blew up the site, posted the source code, posted staff email addresses and IP addresses and PMs). And their software was also shit, and they still came back.

Backing Up Mac Emails with Intention and Control
This article will explore directly the power of backing up Mac emails and help you do it with clarity and control. It explores the mechanics of the whole thing and presents Mail Backup X as a deliberate tool to start curating the part of our lives that’s present everywhere.
Tumblr media
Mac emails occupy a curious place in the designof our modern life comprising of computers and the internet and emails. The email client is always present, but unfortunately, rarely curated with care. Their patterns are unique to each user, shaped by habits nobody teaches but everyone adopts. Some people archive with intention, others drift into accumulation without noticing. Mail Backup X enters here as a solution to chaos, and as a way of interacting differently with what already exists.
Layered Mac Email Backup Is Not Excess but careful organization
You already interact with your Mac emails in ways that suit yourworking and communication style. Why should your Mac emails backup system be any different?
Your backup system should reflect that same logic. A single copy stored in a single location may seem sufficient on the surface, but what happens when that location becomes unreachable, or when something unexpected alters your access?
Using a multi-layered approach does not imply excess or paranoia. It introduces intention. Mail Backup X makes this surprisingly smooth, offering the ability to create local backups on your Mac while simultaneously allowing for uploads to your preferred cloud storage. The software recognizes that you work across more than one space, and that your data security should do the same. The design is not rigid. You decide what qualifies as primary, what serves as fallback, and what travels with you in a pocket-sized encrypted USB drive.
You are not locked into a system that thinks for you. Mail Backup X offers freedom and choice but never becomes overwhelming. You can choose to schedule backups in the background and route them to distinct destinations depending on what matters to you.
For example, sensitive client correspondence may belong on an encrypted external drive, kept physically secure and independent of internet access. Routine communication may be fine on a cloud sync, always retrievable even when you're away from your main device. A third copy can live locally, ready for fast restoration or reference, especially when bandwidth is unreliable. None of this feels excessive when you’ve set the rules yourself. You are not following a protocol designed for another user. You are choosing a system for Mac emails backup that speaks to your own way of managing risk and retrieval.
Flexibility in backup strategy may sound like a technical detail. But it’s not just that. It also influences how calmly you work with your data.
When you know that your Mac emails exist in multiple, well-organized copies, you are less likely to overreact during moments of disruption. The tool encourages this layered thinking without complicating the process. You do not need to understand a new vocabulary or adopt an unfamiliar mindset. You simply configure the tool to follow your logic. As your priorities shift, so can your Mac emails backup configuration. Nothing is permanent or fixed in a template.
The result is a system that grows with you instead of demanding that you adapt to it.
Applying the Features: Building a Controlled, Multi-Layered Backup Strategy
Mail Backup X lets you move beyond vague notions of safety and into an interface built for decisions. This part of the tool becomes especially clear once you begin creating what the application calls “Backup Profiles.”
Each profile is an independent unit with its own email source, storage locations, encryption rules, and backup frequency. The software responds to your style and preferences, not the other way around. Below are some of the core steps you will encounter as you create and manage your own profile-driven, multi-location backup setup for Mac emails.
Go to My Backup Profiles and click New Backup. Select your email source and choose the folders you want to include.
After folder selection, you’ll set the storage location, schedule, encryption, and other preferences that shape how the backup works.
Choose a Space: Click Choose a Space to pick a storage location. Existing spaces appear in the list if you have preciously configured cloud spaces. You can add new ones here if needed. Once set up, they become available across all profiles and can be managed from Storage Spaces.
‘Storage Spaces’ can be found in the sidebar. This section lets you add and manage local folders, cloud drives, or FTP paths. Each space becomes selectable during profile creation.
Backup Schedule: Choose from Automatic, Recurring, or Manual. Recurring lets you set backups by the hour, day, or week.
USB Auto-Snapshot: Register a USB drive to receive profile snapshots. You can set it to copy automatically on plug-in or manually by clicking Copy to USB.
Encryption and Security: Enable encryption in Security Settings for any profile. A unique key protects the archive, and you’ll also create a recovery key during setup.
Mail Backup X presents the controls as they are—practical, clearly labeled, and designed for direct use.
You choose how many profiles you want (under free trial and personal license, you can create up to five). You choose how each one behaves. You assign storage, schedule, encryption, and snapshots in isolation or in combination. The result is a meaningful and practical Mac emails backup system built entirely under your hand.
The structure of profiles and storage makes more sense once you’ve had a chance to explore it firsthand. Fortunately, that part is easy. You can download a fully functional trial version directly from the official website, MailBackupX.com, or from sources you already trust. The installer does not ask for anything upfront, like filling out forms or account creation or signing up for newsletter.
During activation, it may prompt you to enter an email address, but even that remains optional. If you choose to provide it, updates on upcoming versions, newly added features, and occasional discounts will find their way to you, but only if you want them.
Every time you create a backup of Mac emails or something else, you are basically saying, “this should not be lost in the chaos of our modern times, and I am making sure of that.” Backing up Mac emails is attending to your information, respecting the stories, information, narratives that your emails hold. Mac emails backup is part of how you stay rooted in what you’ve built, what you’ve said, and what you still might need to return to.

so! to summarize for you
my laptop breaks at the start of july. laptop itself turns on but screen stays black. shouldn't be too hard of a fix but i have to bring it back to the store i got it from to keep my warranty because if i bring it to my usual computer shop (who could've fixed it in three work days mind you) i lose my warranty
it takes the store a week to tell me that their backup making software is broken. the only alternative they can offer me is take out my hard drive which i had to bring home myself in my wallet because they had nothing else for me to safely store it in
it takes four days for the laptop to be sent to the logistics center where they're gonna fix it. they take one (1) look at it and immediately decide to send it to an external repair shop, from lenovo itself specifically
IT THEN TAKES THEM 11 DAYS. 11 DAYS. TO SEND THE THING TO LENOVO. 11 DAYS
the laptop finally arrives at the repair shop. this was 2-3ish days ago
this morning i suddenly get an email that the max repair term is over and i need to go to the store to either get a new laptop or get my money back
i go to the store, already suspecting it was an automated email, and get confirmation for this there. BUT THEY DO NEED TO SEND IN A REQUEST FOR THE REPAIR TERM TO BE EXTENDED BECAUSE OTHERWISE THEY WILL NOT FIX MY LAPTOP. THAT ONLY A FEW DAYS AGO FINALLY ARRIVED AT THE PLACE WHERE THEY'RE GONNA REPAIR IT.
and also my laptop may have already been destroyed or is already listed to be destroyed. they do this without customer confirmation
and i can't get the same model laptop and they will not install my old hard drive on the new device so i'll have to buy something to get the hard drive as external hard drive and then i have to figure out how to boot up the new laptop from that old hard drive instead. i have to do all of this myself because they fucked up everything
and also there's no way i'll be able to find a similar laptop for the same price i got my old one for because it was a steal back then so i'll have to pay them extra. because. they decided to destroy a year old laptop that arrived for repairs 2-3 days ago
they're gonna destroy an easily fixable laptop that's only a year old. i could have taken this thing elsewhere. they're going to destroy an easily fixable one year old laptop that arrived for repairs 2-3 days ago and they didn't even let me have a say in it
day drinking time
