Fact 295:
Out of all the times in toons where there are alternate versions of dialogue or looks that are picked at random without any choice from the viewer, only five characters are used for any of them. These characters are Homestar (First Time Here?, Marzipan's Character Video), Strong Bad (Email FAQ, Homestar Runner's Character Video), Senor Cardgage (sbemails fan club, kind of cool), Marzipan (also Marzipan's Character Video) and Homsar (also sbemail fan club)

one of the most infuriating things about becoming an adult is when you realize that it actually is 10x easier to solve problems by making a phone call vs literally any other communication method
#I was forced to get over my hatred of making phone calls bc of this#one 15 minute phone call is the equivalent of 5 back and forth emails#also if you don't know exactly what you need help with you can just ask and you can get real help#instead of just desperately clawing at faqs on websites#it's infuriating that it works so well#ramblings

Hello! Can I ramble a bit and ask for some advice?
I've been thinking about converting for a while now. I've been learning more and more about Judaism and the more I learn, the more I feel this inexorable pull towards it. I found a reform synagogue near me and they have a page on their website for potential converts, outlining the process and saying that they're accepting of them. I want to get in touch, via email, explaining my desire to convert and start attending services and immerse myself in the community but I do not know what to say. I'm autistic and and overthinker.
Do I introduce myself? Do I explain in the email WHY I want to convert/what draws me to Judaism? How much about myself should I share? I'm fearful that I won't be welcomed by the community or my presence will make everyone uncomfortable or they won't find me sincere and will turn me away due to my age (I'm 20). I'm sure in my heart, in my bones, that this is what I want and this is right for me. Oh also this synagogue is the nearest to me and I've heard before that you cannot convert if you aren't in walking distance (I'd have to take the bus). Is that true? I will be moving to the area in the future but I don't want to wait to start the process until then.
Just to be clear: I am a layperson and I am not converting reform. I know it matters to some people, so I just wanted to make sure that people do know!
So, I actually think that I will share the email I sent my rabbi when I asked him to sponsor me. I think it might help you in outlining how you might want to introduce yourself - it will be under the cut, with necessary redactions! I totally get how you feel - I was nervous like hell when I was first attending my shul. However, so, so many jews are more than happy to see newcomers. Reform jews - I have noticed - are among some of the genuinely most pleased to see people like you sharing space with them! In my conservative shul, there are numerous different types of people who attend. We have people who are converting, some who are already converted, even some non-jews show up, not even out of a desire to convert! As well, age probably won't be too much of a factor - you're an adult and can make adult choices, after all, including who your people are. I'm not all that much older than you and... it has never come up once because I am more than able to choose my people and my faith (and it's a conservative shul, but I think that indicates it's the same for reform!).
And, also: You can still convert if you don't move within walking distance! That practice is something more "traditional" jews ask of prospective/in-progress converts. You more than likely would not be asked to do that by a Reform shul - they generally have different expectations of you, and that sometimes doesn't apply to frum-er communities. If you want to know why this is done, (I think) it's for two general reasons:
The community wants to help you assimilate. When you convert to judaism, you are also assimilating yourself into jewish culture. You become woven into the cloth that connects judaism together. That comes with a lot of knowledge that you ought to know! The further away you are from a jewish community, the longer it may take for you to fully assimilate into jewish culture.
They want to help you start practicing (parts of) judaism before you are (officially) a jew. When you're finally jewish, shabbos becomes something you need to reckon with if you want to be an observant jew. It becomes officially commanded for you to observe shabbos and keep it holy. If you cannot walk to shul, you may violate that commandment. By living in a walking distance of shul, you can start to observe shabbos while you're still converting. It becomes less of a shock for you to integrate judaism into your everyday life after you are officially jewish the sooner you start observing everything you can while you're converting. Does that make sense?
Because you'll be converting reform, you most likely won't have to worry about that. As long as you can attend services and meet with your future rabbi in whatever way you can (in-person, call, what have you), you will be more than able to fully convert through their standards. I wouldn't worry about this one, but I am not personally familiar with reform standards.
Alright, so below the "read more" is what I sent to my rabbi when I was asking him to be my sponsor. I hope this helps you in some way!
Hello, good afternoon!
[REDACTED] connected me with you and I was wondering if you might be interested in contacting me about being a sponsor for my conversion to Judaism? I'm planning on taking the Intro to Judaism class through [REDACTED] with the plan (and hope) of converting.
As some background, I have been attending services and interacting with the Jewish community at [SHUL] for a few months now, but my interest in Judaism goes back much further. I have also been taking Hebrew classes at [SHUL] for some time now. I feel incredibly at home in the community, and I know I am making a necessary decision.
Thank you so much for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon!
I hope you have an amazing week!
[SHALOM]

btw, fellow canadians, SUDDENCE is apparently technically on canadian amazon, but it's "temporarily out of stock." also, it's about 50 cents more expensive than i have it listed, which leads me to believe it was just converted from the american price.
what i'm trying to do is to get it on indigo. i'll have to email them about it, but if you want to, you can try requesting the book and see if it works! and report back to me bc i want to know if it works too lol
#em dashes#distributing to bookstores is so confusing#bc when i emailed d2d about it they said it's up to indigo to see if they want to buy the book#but on indigo's faq it says it's up to the publisher (aka d2d) if they want to sell at indigo#SO LIKE. WHICH IS IT

Hi!
Nice to see you're posting updates again (tbh, I was kinda afraid the zine was dead after two months of no updates ^^'). However, although I assume the zine is out right now (since contributors are sharing their pieces), I haven't received my digital copy in the mailbox of the email I provided yet. (I've sent an email about this to your Gmail address as well.)
Hello! We are currently still in the production phase, and we plan to post photo updates as the items arrive. The digital zines will be sent out when the physical zine bundles will be shipped out, which is estimated to be around the end of June/early July!
Thank you for letting us know that the website schedule hasn't been updated on the customer-facing site, we will correct and publish the updated schedule today. We will be sure to keep everyone updated on production and fulfilment through the zine's socials as more specific dates become available.

hey, shalom! so i'm looking to convert and i sent an email to a local shul explaining that i'm interested in converting and that i'd like to start attending services (their website asks that you send them an email beforehand if you're gonna be attending and haven't before) but they haven't gotten back to me yet. it's only been a few days but i'm now worried they're not gonna get back to me and idk don't like me based off my email (silly i know). how much time do you think has to have passed before i should assume the email has gotten lost and i need to send a follow up email or call them? i don't want to pester them obviously and of course i understand they might be busy. i was assuming 2-3 weeks? i think i'm mostly looking for reassurance that they will get back to me in time and i have no reason to worry about it
I definitely empathize with you; I think what helps is remembering that many shuls are either small enough that it's only one person operating the domain, or they're cautious and it isn't about you, but moreso about ensuring the safety of the community.
I sent an email to the shul I go to, and it took a bit for them to get back to me. As it turns out, only one person operates the domain and is incredibly busy all the time with improving the shul, the cemetery, and organizing. I ended up getting a call from him personally where I discussed a bit of my background, which I think can be very helpful.
Because of how close shabbos is right now (I'm reading this on a friday afternoon), it might also be a conflict. You may not have sent the email anywhere near shabbos, but l-rd knows how hard it is to read email every day (one of my toxic traits, and I know it permeates a good chunk of the jewish community 😭). I'm so psyched for you, and I'm sure you're full of nerves, but it'll work out! I'd say that you are correct; sending a follow-up email after a few weeks could be a good reminder, but just know that it can sometimes just be a matter of time. I hope you hear back soon🩵🩵
#ask#jumblr#jew by choice#jewish conversion#long post#personal thoughts tag#convert FAQs#i'm on my shul's email listing and they (aka one guy) send a TOME every week#i know it's from a template but still. you can scroll and scroll and SCROLL down#so just to give you an idea... some people at shul are Very dedicated and that dedication is paid for with time#which unfortunately means that these things might take longer than you anticipate#most shuls are incredibly small ime#the ones that have dedicated teams for communication or separate teams for shul improvement seem uncommon#in my shul many of us find something to do because we can't go manifesting help y'know?#and that's also not uncommon. i'm still amazed there are shuls out there who can hire *security*#when i went to visit this huge shul a security guard buzzed me *in*. i was SO confused at first. and then i explained Why I Was There to hi#hell my rabbi is very 'bad' about responding to email apparently#i put 'bad' in quotes because he sounds INCREDIBLY busy and i would never be mad at him over something as small as that#like... so many jews rely on email but. responding to them? optional (silly tone)
