Hazbin Hotel Thoughts: Episodes 7 & 8 (FINALE)
SPOILERS
Whoooooooooooooooo, boooooooooooooooy....
These last episodes were amazing!!!
I'll admit, I was a smidge spoiled by tumblr posts and Youtube thumbnails...not cool to those who don't put a spoiler warning or stamp and used the 'keep reading' line. Come on!
Anyways, where to begin...
A lot of sweet stuff in Episode 07, plus some somber stuff.
Vaggie gained back her wings! I guess its because she got them wrongfully taken by Adam and Lute rather than being 'fallen' in the eyes of Heaven.
Kinda cool to see how helpful Carmilla and Rosie were. And I adored Rosie and her chemistry with Alastor! I love how supportive they were for Charlie, almost acting like her mother and father. So cute!
The fight in the finale was epic!
One of my favorite moments during the battle (besides Alastor vs Adam and Lucifer appearing) is Charlie manifesting a demonic arm. This is a reference to her original design!
And Razzle and Dazzle can turn into dragons?! But, Dazzle died! Nooooooooo!
Sir Pentious becoming a Winner is one of things that got spoiled for me, but it didn't diminish my thoughts and feelings on the matter because I didn't know how. He sacrificed himself for the other's safety, a selfless sacrifice at that which does harcon back to a biblical quote.
Emily is still friggin' cute and HA! Take that, Sera!
Adam dying was another thing spoiled. It was also unexpected. Still liked seeing it happen and by Niffty by all people. I do wonder what happens when an angel dies by an angelic weapon...like, are they permanently gone too or...
That moment with Alastor...man ain't doing good and I'm curious who has a leash on him. Some people seems to think that Alastor has plans to take over Hell once he is freed from this but...I don't know, it doesn't seem to be his style. I mean, I also wouldn't like being stifled by someone else and would want to break free.
Again, I've been wrong before, so let's see how this plays out. And Alastor seems to have genuine care, but, unsurprisingly, he views this as a weakness and wishes to toss that aside for his own goals (one being to free himself). I do wonder how this will come to play.
Wait...Lilith has been in Heaven this whole time? And she made a deal? And it seems to had been connected to Adam...was it to keep Charlie safe?
Final Thoughts
When can we expect Season 02?

Oh by the way it's absolutely fucking hilarious that this show has just been massively spoiled by trading cards of all things. Did Viv seriously expect anyone to keep those spoilers a secret??
So we can piece more things about the show together:
-There's no Lillith card. Even in the HH subreddit, there are people asking about her.
-Razzle and Dazzle have giant demon forms (which I do admit are neat). https://twitter.com/PrideRing666/status/1738287827362742747
-The Hotel gets destroyed and then rebuilt.
-Sinners do get redeemed and are called... "Winners". Uhh... why the lame ass name, Viv? Can't come up with something cool like "The Redeemed"? Something? Anything? No? That's clever enough for you? Okay.
-Angels Sera and Emily have been revealed.
-An exorcist gets decapitated.
-There's a random character named Susan.
-Katie Killjoy and Tom Trench are back.
I *think* that's it. Aside from Amazon hilariously potentially spoiling that Vaggie is/was an exorcist. 💀
I dunno Chai, I think incremental spoilers are helping your inbox from getting super flooded. We can piece more and more from this shitshow without being surprised when we all do watch it.
I personally think that the war is S1 and redeeming is S2.
Tumblr media
The General Pentious seems like a pretty big spoiler too, and one I wish I could get excited about...god, I loved that silly little snake.
Also, I think my inbox's getting flooded on January 19th no matter what happens. I apologize to everyone uninterested in this in advance.

My unorganized thoughts about Hazbin finale because I am feeling all the feelings.
Positives
The songs? Absolute bangers. Both of them. The Chaggie "More Than Anything" reprise got spoiled for me but I still loved it. We stan a supportive couple ready to go to war together. The reprise for "Happy Day in Hell" at the end was a nice touch. Loved that it was Lucifer who picked up the slack to cheer up Charlie. Mans finally becoming the dad who stepped up.
The battle as a whole was awesome. Hot take, but if Adam didn't have the spawn infinite enemies cheat all bad guy armies seem to have in these situations, the Hotel definitely would've won.
I'll admit, I wasn't too jazzed about Sir Pentious replacing Mimzy in the main cast but he kind of redeemed (lol) himself for me this episode. Bro was both one of the funniest and most heartwarming characters in the finale get yourself a man who can do both. The unholy (lol) noises I made when he showed up as a redeemed soul in Heaven. Good for him! He deserves the best. Also I find Sera's and Emily's reactions to the reveal kind of interesting. Emily is overjoyed seeing that Charlie's idea works, but Sera looks... mortified? Disgusted? Kinda tells us which one of these two really deserves the title of Big Good. Side note, but it's kind of funny how the only physical change a redeemed sinner goes through is that their color scheme is now pastel instead of goth.
ADAM FUCKING DIED YESSIRRRRR! GOOD RIDDANCE BITCH NO ONE WILL MISS YOUUUU (Except for Lute, but no one gives a fuck about what Lute thinks, cry harder hoe)
Charlie's and Lucifer's true formssss! Razzle and Dazzle getting to be badassss! (R.I.P. Dazzle, hope you somehow end up in Heaven too)
Alastor Vs Adam. Cool fight, surprisingly not as one-sided as one might've thought. I mean, Alastor still lost but he lasted a lot longer than most of the others who fought against Adam (Poor Sir Pen)
Vaggie and Lute rematch, I fucking called ittttt!
Seeing everyone gear up and fight for the Hotel was cool, seeing so many Exorcists get axed off was cathartic as fuck.
Lute losing a part of her body because of Vaggie, just like she took a part of Vaggie's body was *chef's kiss*.
Lucifer Vs Adam and Lucifer just... not taking the fight seriously at all until Charlie almost gets hurt. He was really just toying with Adam for the entire first half and when he started getting serious Adam got trashed so fucking quick, I love it.
Charlie fucking shanking Adam and stopping his punch Just Like That. I lover her, she's such a badass. Sure wish we could've seen more of that (foreshadowinggg)
Vox acting as the greek chorus for the events of the episode works surprisingly well. Ngl I thought his constant commentary would get annoying really fast if they kept cutting away from the action just so he can say a funny. But no, they actually managed to time it pretty well. Props to Adam Stein (writer for this episode).
The Negatives (Yes, They Exist)
The other Vees did not need to be here. Seriously, we're starting off with Vox alone in his control room and we could've stayed there. Velvette and Valentino didn't even talk for the majority of the episode. And I'm not a fan of how Val continues to be played for comedy. Unfriendly reminder that this man is a r*pist and an abuser. If you needed a V for the funnies, Velvette and Vox are quite literally right there. (Can you believe Velvette had no lines this episode but fucking Val had both a speaking role and a not insignificant part of the ending song? Weak.) You can still have the ending scene of the Vees hanging out and planning after the aborted Extermination, literally nothing changes if you cut Val and Velvette from the cutaway gags.
Not a fan of how Lucifer stole the spotlight. "But you said you liked the Adam Vs Lucifer fight-" Yeah, I did. Doesn't change that this shouldn't have been Luci's fight, it should have been Charlie's. We've had hints this whole season that Charlie is actually way stronger and wrathful than anyone thinks and that she's actively working to keep up her cheerful and friendly persona. Her stabbing Adam with her trident was a nice start, but after Lute killed Dazzle and seriously endangered Vaggie, this should've been the moment Charlie decided "Alright that's it, no more Miss Nice Girl, I didn't want this to end in bloodshed but these assholes are going down." This should've been the moment where the gloves come off. How much more impactful would it be if Charlie was the one beating down Adam but stopping before killing him? If the show made it clear Charlie could murder this asshole, but she doesn't, because she's still better than he ever will be. What a way to show that Charlie truly does believe in the good in everyone or at least still believes in non-lethal solutions to the conflict between Heaven and Hell! But nope, Charlie gets two badass moments, then is banished to the side-lines and to the role of damsel Lucifer has to save and who has to be the metaphorical angel on Lucifer's shoulder who stops him from offing Adam (for some reason). If we needed to get Lucifer involved, maybe have him show up earlier to help the Hotel but get hurt somehow, forcing and motivating Charlie to step up as the future ruler of Hell. Speaking of-
Why the fuck was Lucifer so late to the fight??? Yeah yeah, I know, depressed shut-in, but in "More Than Anything" he literally calls Charlie "the only thing worth fighting for" in Hell. He knew the Extermination was coming. Yeah, maybe Charlie didn't tell him that the trial in Heaven went south and that Adam's Exorcists were going to target the Hazbin Hotel, but you'd think he'd have noticed something was up??? More importantly, if he really wanted to support Charlie's dream of saving the sinners in Hell, why didn't he take part in the battle from the start??? Why didn't Charlie ask him to fight alongside her??? Yeah, Charlie is reluctant to ask Lucifer for anything because they don't have the best relationship, but we've had an entire fucking episode of them growing closer and Lucifer assuring Charlie he'd help her. And this wasn't just a matter of pride, Charlie's friends and her girlfriend were in danger of getting killed, you're telling me she'd choose her own hang-up over all of them??? "But if Lucifer was there, the fight would've been over too quick-" refer to the previous point. Angels can be hurt and killed by angelic weaponry, there were like over a hundred Exorcists on that battlefield and don't tell me Adam would be above fighting dirty by attacking while Lucifer is distracted. There. Easy way to take Lucifer out of the fight and make way for Charlie.
Not a fan of how Cherri Bomb x Sir Pentious was bullrushed in this last episode. Yeah, we established Pentious likes her, but Cherri had like no interest in him until Angel commented he might have two dicks. Which, I guess her being after a purely physical relationship could work, but we all know that's not what Pentious wants. Their "romance" gives "He Was a Boy She Was a Girl" vibes. Like Velvette and Valentino, nothing in the episode would've been lost if that particular plot-line was dropped.
"The future of Hell belongs to the Vees" Yeah but does it though? Does it? Sorry, but I'm having a hard time taking these three seriously as a threat. Vox got effortlessly trounced by Alastor (and contrary to what the Vees believe he isn't missing, he came back), Velvette talked a big game about fighting the Exorcists but then did absolutely nothing and Val would eat dirt so fast against anyone who can actually fight back. Plus "Overlords hanging by a thread"? Which Overlords, exactly? Alastor? He's not dead and like previously stated, he's not 'missing'. Rosie, Carmilla, Zestial and the rest of the Overlords are just fine, the Extermination was centered around the Hazbin Hotel this time, no other turf even got scratched. "Nature abhors a power vacuum" What power vacuum? Again, no Overlords even died! No territory outside the hotel was destroyed! Are they just on a high from Alastor's supposed disappearance? I hope that's it, because otherwise damn, you three fucking suck at being Overlords.

Obey me brothers playing Stardew Vally!
Another day another fanfic, as someone with 500 hours in stardew I love this game and would love to imagine the om bros playing it with you! Part 2 up now
Tumblr media
He would prefer just playing with you and him, he doesn't need to deal with his brothers outside of reality.
Spends his time either in the mines or fishing because it's relaxing.
Will slay monsters for you in the mines, and protect you.
Gets mad if he ever dies, it hurts his pride.
Always got mad at Levi for yelling at his game too loud, well...now he gets it even if he never will admit it.
Takes good care of his dog, names it Cerberus and never lets his water bowel go empty.
"Don't worry my dear, these pathetic slimes will not harm a hair on your head."
Tumblr media
Will be ALL OVER THE PLACE in the game, boy has energy for years
Will do any and every aspect of stardew that even remotely made money.
make sure your money is separate or he will spend it all!
Even with all his money making activities he still somehow find a way to be glued to you.
Excitedly tells you how much he made from the shipping bin (please tell him he did a good job)
Never sells straight to the store will always put everything in a shipping bin to see all the cash rack up at the end of the day.
Will definitely get married with you in game and have kids <3
"AHAHAHA The great mammon made 30,000 today, aren't cha proud of me?"
Tumblr media
Levi probably has a ungodly amount of hours in this game and know every single thing about it, at this point he's just seeing how fast he can finish everything.
Won't spoil the game for you but will give you hints to the right direction (green is lucky bet on that color).
Good at every aspect of the game, mining? fishing? foraging? farming? ranching? he's got it all.
You honestly don't even need to try in this game he will spoil you and shower you in whatever you wanted.
His favorite character is Abigail, purple haired gamer girl yes please, whom he always romanced before meeting you.
When you get jealous and upset after learning that, he shyly presents the wedding ring he grinded the mines for (prismatic shards are hard to come by!).
"Um... here's a wedding ring. Nononono I'm not proposing this is to get the last stardrop in the game I swear! (blushes madly behind the screen glad you couldn't see him)"
Tumblr media
You know this man will be obsessed with his pet cat, petting it every day and making sure the water bowel is full like his life depended on it.
Dies of cuteness everytime the cat snuggled with him in bed.
Waiting for that [pet]loves you note to appear and it makes him so happy.
Spends most of his time looking for books and reading them in game at the library.(who actually reads those in game? he does!)
From reading all the wiki he knows literally everything about the game as well, will spoil the game.
"Did you know in the fair if you bet on green you will have a 75% chance of winning?"
Tumblr media
Spends his time befriending and chatting up all the npcs, so confusing why they don't like him from the get go because of his dazzling beauty!
Will spends YEARS on character customization
Also spends his time getting all the clothes and accessories, because he has to change up his beautiful look every now and then!
Will marry you to constantly give you a bunch of kisses!!! <3
Will also do the unspeakable with you every night XD thankfully you can only have two kids in stardew.
Somehow becomes best friends with emily and the wizard to change his look whenever he wants (befriending sorcerers is just his thing ig.
If he wasn't dating you he would be flirting with every npc until the fateful scene lol
"Hailey is so mean to me! >:( She must be jealous of my mesmerizing looks! Now never mind that my darling come give me a kisssss."
Tumblr media
You had to get Solomon to open a portal to the kitchen cabinet so he doesn't constantly get up to go eat
The only brother beside Levi that actually farms so he can get ingredients
Gets the Kitchen upgrade first thing and cooks and eats all day in the game even if his energy is full, eating in game also makes him hungry in real life EVERY TIME
Hangs out at Gus all day, probably eating Gus out of his business as well
Gave his character a mouth so he can eat (haha so cute)
Will want to play with Belphie and you and present you guys with new recipes he cooked.
"I cooked 2000 survival burgers today would you like some?"
Tumblr media
Why sleepy?because it rhymes with Belphie! Actually he mistyped when he feel asleep halfway through the customization and went with it.
Only playing because you and Beel asked him
Wanted to wear matching outfits with Beel, or is he too lazy to pick his own we will never know
Will nap all day in game and in real life as well, you keep having to get up and go to his computer to hit ok for the next day
The times he is awake he will probably follow you and Beel around to cheer you guys on whatever it is that you're doing
His favorite part is when you snuggle in bed with him at the end of each day in game.
"Come and snuggle with me...actually just turn off the game and snuggle with me in real life I'm getting lonely here."

The Pianist: A Tale Of Horror (Ch 4)
Émilie starts working in the castle. The first few nights, she couldn't sleep. The sounds of the old castle are strange to her city ears. One night, she is lying in her bed, the regular ticking of an old clock rocks her and she begins to fall asleep. She closes her eyes and rolls onto her side. Suddenly, she feels a hot breath on her face, then the jaw of a beast snaps shut in front of her mouth with a crack. Emilie jumps, she runs to turn on the light and looks at her empty bed. Maybe she had dreamed. She is not used to sleeping alone and her nerves are on edge every night.
During the day, it is Valentina who makes her forget his fears. Émilie adores the little girl. Far from being a spoiled child, Valentina turns out to be an excellent student. She speaks perfect Romanian as well as French, since her mother was of Romanian origin. One day, Valentina asks her if Lisa is okay. Émilie is surprised to know that the little girl knows Lisa. She tells her that if her father agrees, they could see her. Valentina, with her restraint that contrasts with her age, goes to put herself in the arms of Émilie who hugs and kisses her.
When she is not with Valentina, Émilie loves walking around the huge castle which looks like a museum. She looks at old paintings, old Baroque furniture and antiques of all kinds. One morning, as she leaves her room, she hears a piano tune. It's definitely him! Her heart flutters and she smiles. She feels alive again. She quickly goes down to the music room where the piano is. She opens the door and sees Vincent, playing a happy tune. Vincent stops playing and exclaims: "Émilie!". He goes to greet her without hiding his joy at seeing her again. She announces him that she is now working in the castle and the young man's big black eyes sparkle with joy. He tells her that he is going to give her a welcome gift. He asks her to sit down and close her eyes. He begins to play a touching and tormented Beethoven sonata. Vincent asks her what she sees. Émilie sees herself on a cliff, she watches a storm in the sea. The wind is blowing hard, the clouds are racing in the sky. They are getting darker. Thunder rumbles and lightning strikes the sea in the distance. A torrent of rain falls. The music softens, the sonata ends and Émilie opens wide dazzled eyes. Vincent asks her what she felt and she replies that she felt fear but also fascination. Vincent tells her that this is called the "sublime". It is the beauty of power that frightens and at the same time irresistibly attracts. When she leaves the music room, Émilie discovers with surprise that it is now dark and everyone is asleep. She looks at the time in a clock and sees that it is now 4am. How could she have spent all this time with Vincent without realizing it? She returns to the music room to tell Vincent but she is surprised to find it now empty and plunged into darkness.
For days, Émilie and Vincent meet as often as they can in the music room and chat there for hours. One day, she notices that one of the paintings in the music room is covered by a sheet. She gets up and goes to reveal it. She discovers the portrait of a pretty young woman dressed in an outfit from the 1920s. Vincent tells her that it is Mr. Costine's great-grandmother. Below the painting a label indicates that her name was Henriette Costine and that she died in 1975. Émilie has the impression of having seen this lady before. Vincent tells her that she may have already seen another portrait of her in another room, but Émilie realizes that she was not the same age. Suddenly, Emilie remembers. This woman is just the old lady who chased her out of the castle on the night of the party. She hesitates, then gives up telling Vincent, who hastens to cover the painting again. She tells herself that it has to be a woman who looked like her because she is from the same family. Otherwise what would it be? a ghost?

tombstone for two.
A way to a princess’s heart was through the art of viscera, mystery, and dramatics. It was ever so accurate for the heiress apparent to the Novoselic crown, the nouveau horror connoisseur herself.
How much of a better time than to preoccupy and challenge her mind than with a mystery? The enigma of an unknown sender and a collection of clues, of course! Yet the prominent inquiry remains, what exactly was what question did this solution answer. As well, who was the face behind such an elusive game?
The Wednesday prior, a week or so already into autumn, and several raven-black framed ‘calling cards’ seemingly flew into the princess’s possessions and most popular locations - snugged underneath the foot of her chair, in her school bag right after breakfast and lunch period, and so on. Conniving bird has been making themself a fuss, leaving together only quotes from the likes of Stuart Merrill’s short stories and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. A stranger message asked if she enjoyed roses and cognac. Odd, odd, indeed!
Several of her peers from Class 77-B and 77-A akin voiced intrigue and curiosity. A loud minority expressing jealousy, but the deathly stare from the unofficial janitor of the academy resolved that situation relatively quick. Record timing, indeed!
Duties and obligations shan’t be ignored, of course, and the mystery conveniently paused - almost at the behest of Sonia’s busy schedule. Mindful mastermind resumes the clues as soon as the princess breathes and enters respite for how little it can stay.
Nearing the witching hour, yet not close enough for specters and their ilk to make an entrance, October 12th was concluding. Tap, tap, tap. Quiet rasps at the door interrupt a hopefully productive study session for the blonde.
Father Knox’s Decalogue dictates that the most successful crimes never allow the criminal to be elusive from the story - their presence is never accentuated by text but briefly regarded through several lines.
Perhaps Father Knox hadn’t realized that meticulous planning and anxiety had a way of spoiling a mystery altogether, especially when the red-handed culprit stands at the doorway, hopeful not to awaken or alert neighbors.
Gray hood is drawn up, a most unusual fashion choice for her, with copper braid replaced with high ponytail - a sure sign of her taking something seriously. Scarred hand presented, she hushes Sonia and beckons her to come with her after she dresses with appropriate wear. Any decision to go out otherwise meets heavy refusal and insistent push back into the room.
Calloused hand in eager hand, both princess and hatmaker slip from their abode away from home — two stragglers in the night, eyes full of dazzling stars and city lights, bound for some seemingly great unknown.
A princess spirited away at midnight, a scandalous affair in the moonlight! How would the Queen Mother react to such unruly behavior? The beauty of a mystery is its book-ended nature - all self-contained within the confines of cover. Like all other writings, it was much its own world and a world that only those who opened the pages could find.
Not another soul is aware of such transgressions, as it should be.
Slipping through alleyways and even offering her jacket to the sovereign-to-be, Sophie weaves them through unsuspecting nightlife. Past concrete and buildings, the scenery greener and distant from the modern world - now to a sizeable hedged wall surrounding an unknown location.
The guiding hand offers itself once more, Sophie glancing at the barricade and back to Sonia before providing any needed assistance to climb over it. As if the princess would ever have trespassed before! Truly a spotless record that has never known a mark in its life, she never indeed never infringed or ever acted outside of proper conduct. Not at all!
And over the garden wall they went successfully – sin Sophie’s assured and almost confident air humbled as she unceremoniously landed face first in a bush. Twigs and foliage were sticking out of her hair while she pulled herself up, spitting out a leaf.
The two have managed themselves into a cemetery, where mortals lay to eternal peace, perpetual quietude. Offering her arm, Sophie tempts Sonia further with a leisure stroll through tombstones on numerous tiers. However, considering how obstinate the hatter was in returning to course - Sophie still encouraging Sonia to see what she liked and even pull her along as Sophie (admittedly) would obediently follow - there were intentions in her direction.
A conveniently large bush is nearby with an even more convenient empty plot - yet to be reserved and ground undisturbed by any construction. Sophie reluctantly removes herself from Sonia before dusting her hands together and beginning her maddening reveal.
Almost instantaneously, and perhaps with inhuman speed, a large quilt is unfolded and spread across the ground with an assortment of recently prepared and homemade meals. Drinks, some aged well like a wine bottle or two (and a whiskey, mainly for Sophie), and some fresh from vending machines like several sodas lined up there too. A pink-and-silver wrapped box was awaiting at the center of the blanket too.
“Ah…” Adrenaline has finally worn off as Sophie’s expectant countenance falters. Usual awkwardness returns to her with a soft clap of her hands before rubbing her hands together. Flighty attention springing guest of honor and to-be banquet, she takes a deep breath and turns entirely to acknowledge the blonde.
“I understand how underwhelming this can be, compared to most everything you’d probably seen or had before,” she breathes out, struggling with a demure smile and a blush of roses overwhelming her freckled cheeks. “Grander, more luxurious, and more garish if Queen Regent demands it,” she couldn’t resist chaste laughter at the memory.
“Nevertheless, that’s not who you are. Never have been and never will be as stalwart as you are, as upfront with who you are too,” her words proud and genuine as she continues. “And, well, I wanted to do something–"
Sophie lowers her head, groaning. Her marred hand rubs the back of her neck "Goodness,” she looks up to Sonia’s stormy grey eyes, “this sounds ridiculous and is even more embarrassing, isn’t it?"
"I just wanted to surprise you, is all. Out of a whim, which you know how that can get with me sometimes."
"Happy Birthday, Sonia,” she beams. “Would you care to enjoy this night with me?"
*On top of scenic dinner and a possible chance to commune with spirits, the box’s contents are from Sophie’s hands herself! It is not limited to a small black laced fascinator, a rose-pink front-buttoned V-cut pinafore dress (with matching white and black georgette blouses), and two hard-covered copies of what appears to be great romantic classics..!
___________________________________________________________
She did, in fact, enjoy both roses and cognac. It would be a challenge to call herself a proper Novosonian if she did not.
But what Sonia liked even more was a good intrigue. Particularly one that threatened to deploy her family’s security team as they possessed the belief that a week before the Princess of Novoselic’s birthday, someone had begun to threaten her.
Ominous black notes, materializing in places they shouldn’t. Classroom whispers. Concerned teachers and then concerned school administrators had gotten the word back to her homeland and it had been a flurry of calls, of meetings, of assurances that, despite her lacking security (compared to what she was accustomed to, anyway) on the Hope’s Peak campus, Sonia Nevermind was completely fine.
More than fine, actually.
She was goddamn twitterpated.
She hadn’t dared show anyone the exact content of the notes. That much privacy she’d been granted upon arriving as a normal student. But instead of threats against her life and her family, they were poetry. Quotes from gothic literature. All things she recognized, having read them over and over again when her own castle felt too confining, too full of rules and regulations but the likes of France and the English moors did not. They had pining, unrequited love, ancient family secrets and brooding. Plenty of brooding, as dark and murky as the English weather.
She loved them. And someone else knew it. That, in and of itself, was already exciting. The anticipation had ebbed a bit in her work to assure the staff that she was safe and secure within Hope’s Peak’s walls, but as midnight approached on October 13, Sonia had sat at her desk, laptop set aside, and all of the cards arranged in neat rows in its place. She was no Ultimate Detective, but certainly she could do her best Phryne Fisher impression and unravel the mystery. Even if it has handwriting she couldn’t recognize, there was no stamp to trace, not even a wax seal she’d needed to break and she lacked the forensic tools and know-how to try to find fingerprints. Her study session, that of the cards, was now wholly unproductive.
Thankfully, she was interrupted by soft knocking at her door. A knock from a hooded 'stranger’ who, under most circumstances, would have even given the princess cause for alarm (it hadn’t been the first time she’d been stalked or kidnapped, after all). But the scars that adorned one slender hand, with neat nails and calluses over the fingers, they were enough for her to identify who it belonged to. And they had directed her to wear something different than her pajamas: they were too delicate, too silky, too blue and far too skimpy if they were headed out of doors. "All right, I understand,” Sonia whispered after being shoved back once. Though casting the hooded figure a playful look of her own, she proceeded to peel off her camisole and shorts right in front of them, leaving her clad in her knickers alone until she donned a bra and the black top, trousers, socks, and boots of her military training attire.
She wanted to play a game, to lead her on, to tease her a bit.
Sonia could do that right back, and she’d do it with small scraps of lace instead of letters.
She soon placed her hand in hers and allowed Sophie to lead her away. Away from Hope’s Peak, away from royal responsibilities, down the proverbial rabbit hole and into the dark, serene nightlife. Their own wonderland, a prospect proven even more true the moment Sonia realized Sophie had led her to a cemetery: old and elegant and foreboding. Sonia had taken the wall in a running jump and hoist method, fluid and practiced in a way that years of mandatory military training afforded her. Sophie had not been so experienced, and Sonia bit her tongue to choke back a laugh. She took her arm instead, milling their way through the gravel paths. Greeted by mausoleums as quiet as…well, the grave, elaborate headstones, bouquets of flowers that had begun to wilt, brown, and crumble in the autumn weather, and everything adorned by leaves in autumn shades, they walked on softly, leisurely, before suddenly Sophie detangled herself from Sonia’s arm and bolted ahead with such speed that the princess was mostly used to seeing when she was pressed up against a deadline.
“Oh, it’s hardly underwhelming!” She assured her with a smile, bright and yet mostly hidden in the night. But Sophie could tell, of that Sonia was sure, as she approached the elaborate midnight picnic spread she’d arranged. “I’ve seen so much grandeur, and while don’t mention that it’s garish in front of my mother, I’m inclined to agree. But this, Sophie…this is perfect.”
A gentle tug of Sophie’s hand was Sonia’s answer: to have her join her on the blanket beneath the stars, surrounded by souls at peace and a quiet neither of them could seem to find elsewhere. They needed to be someone to everyone: a skilled tradeswoman, a princess, a daughter, the symbol of a family’s future success. They had the weight of the world on their shoulders, one pale and one freckled, for everyone…except each other.
For each other, they simply had to be Sonia and Sophie.
Two girls who liked to read.
Who liked pretty clothes.
Who liked baked goods and scotch and quips about the lives they led that few were clever enough to pick up on.
Who loved each other.
She’d cooked the meal herself, that much Sonia knew, and the wine and spirits and wrapped gift were certainly delectable. But Sophie enticed her even more, as she pulled her into her lap, pulling down the grey hood that covered her cheeks and replacing them with her own lips. Soft kisses, gentle caresses, that trailed to Sophie’s earlobe.
Sonia’s arms held her closer as she neared that soft spot of freckled skin, tickled by stray copper strands that had escaped her no-nonsense ponytail. Breathing deeply and taking in the scent of flour and cooked sugar, she smiled against Sophie’s skin. She was perfect to her.
Tumblr media
“Whatever our souls are made of, yours and mine are the same,” She murmured before placing a kiss there. It paraphrased the quote some, but Sophie would recognize it. She’d understand. That after brooding and familial circumstances that threatened to tear them apart, they would not suffer Cathy and Heathcliff’s fate. Sonia wouldn’t let them, no matter what it took. “Thank you. While I love it, I love you even more.”
The world looked at her and saw a princess, one of the most eligible bachelorettes in the world. They saw grace, they saw refinement, they saw a young woman born and bred for a single purpose: to be the leader a nation needed.
But Sophie looked at her and saw Sonia Nevermind. And that made all the difference.

“Be More Chill” #793
Tumblr media
It’s no secret now that Joe Iconis has hit Broadway fame with his gone-viral, teenage-loving hit, Be More Chill. Though it may be closing August 11th, and may not have received a single Tony award, it is a great example of what unapologetic commitment to your craft, and a little help from the viral generation, can do for you. Be More Chill, a former off-Broadway cult nugget, has made the mainstream jump to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre. In true modern relation, the show is about a teenager who will do anything to become popular, even taking an untested, not-FDA-approved pill from Japan. Led by a very charming, well-voiced Will Roland, Be More Chill is anything but honoring of its title in its execution and commitment to telling this story of teenage angst, desire, and love.
From the start, Be More Chill is a weird show. It leans into its weirdness with a score and technical design that let its audience know that it’s aware of its weirdness, and the audience has consented to going along for the ride. Mr. Roland’s performance as Jeremy, the teenage at the center of the story, starts off the weird in “More than Survive,” the opening number that tells of his high school status, but not necessarily sets the stage for what he is truly looking for. Love, popularity, a relationship with his dad, to just have a quicker download time for his porn? All these questions, and it takes a long time for  the audience to get a clear answer. Mr. Roland’s differing timbre between pre-Squip (the pill he takes which makes him super cool and attractive) and Squip-induced is a bit much, but not without reason; there’s only so much a slightly differing hairdo and costume change can do for an audience to see Mr. Roland’s back-and-forth journey as Jeremy, and Jeremy on Squip. Mr. Roland’s big “I Want” moment comes just in the nick of time in “Loser Geek Whatever,” a finale he sings with flourish and a nakedness that makes his Jeremy finally somebody the audience can get on board with. Much to Mr. Roland’s and book writer, Joe Tracz’s, credit, Jeremy is a great role in that it supports and helps develop every other character he comes into contact with. Once Jeremy’s journey catches up, the show’s plot certainly clicks along at a more intriguing, invest-worthy pace.
Playing opposite Mr. Roland is a stellar George Salazar as Michael; yes, that Michael, who hides in the bathroom during the big Halloween party. By this time, even moderate Broadway fans know that “Michael in the Bathroom” is the new go-to song for your post-show karaoke, your next conservatory audition song, or perhaps your college showcase. But let it be known that Mr. Salazar sang it first, and, according to my YouTube rabbit holing, sings it best. All roads lead to Mr. Salazar’s completely vulnerable and big-voiced lament that puts on display every insecurity any teenager has ever felt at any given party, whether on the same or a smaller scale as Michael. “Michael in the Bathroom,” I dare say, is the sole reason Act Two exists, in terms of artistic, musical theatre satisfaction. But don’t be fooled, Mr. Salazar delivers a fully-realized performance as Michael, infusing humor, likeability, and well-earned sympathy for his journey from best friend to friend erased.
Featured highlights include performances by Lauren Marcus and Katlyn Carlson as besties, Brooke and Chloe, respectively. Both embody ditsy high school angst and popularity with near-believability but plenty of comedic integrity. In fact, the general tone to the cast’s execution of Stephen Brackett’s direction is that each character rests a hair above reality, especially when comedy is in discussion, catering more to those who enjoy the exaggerated, more off-beat humor and delivery. This works to much of the show’s success, though sometimes falls flat, especially at the hands of Britton Smith and Stephanie Hsu’s, playing almost-lovers, Jake and Christine, respectively. Mr. Smith is given very little to do in the way of character development, and apart from Ms. Hsu’s beautifully charming delivery of her opening solo, “I Love Play Rehearsal,” her efforts seem to focus more on shoehorning the laugh through facial and physical comedy rather than leaning on Mr. Tracz’s dialogue and chemistry opposite Mr. Roland’s Jeremy.
Jason SweetTooth Williams is a hardworking chameleon in the adult male track, playing Mr. Heere, Mr. Reyes, and the Scary Stockboy. Mr. Williams’ ability to give distinct nuance and varying types of humor to each well-crafted character is a testament to his professionalism and chops as an actor-singer. Jason Tam is a delightful, ominously engaging Squip, having the presence and vocal prowess to truly be a Squip of sterling quality. Last, but certainly, not least, Mr. Iconis’ answer to Bye, Bye, Birdie’s “Telephone Hour” is led magnificently by Tiffany Mann, playing Jenna, whose belt and energy catapults “The Smartphone Hour (Rich Set a Fire)” into true show-stopping territory.
In all, Be More Chill finds its triumphs in the technical designs, namely in Tyler Micoleau’s concert-like lighting design, fit for those who enjoy non-stop eye-popping flashes, complete with spectacle and dazzle; Ryan Rumery’s rapturous sound design; and Beowulf Boritt’s dynamite set design, which leaves plenty of room for the lights and Alex Basco Koch’s on-point projection designs to take center stage when called for, almost serving as another character in the story telling. In fact, the simple plot (not a bad thing) gets tucked away in this technical marvel of a production. Also, I’d be remiss to not mention how absolutely rockin’ the band is, musically directed by Emily Marshall. At no time was the band nor the cast competing with one another at the Wednesday matinee I attended; all was heard and all was pitch-perfect, which is certainly not an easy feat for a score such as this.
Be More Chill is exactly what it sets out to be, problems and all. What you’re left with when leaving the theater is a protagonist who, of sound mind and body, decides to take a pill to become popular, even at the expense of losing his best friend. Other choices Jeremy makes, which I dare not spoil should you find yourself able to see the show before its closing date, leave the Squip (arguably the Audrey II in this scenario), as a glorified savior rather than villainous influencer. It is difficult to find sympathy for Jeremy, no matter how effectively Mr. Roland is at delivering his nerdy charm and alluring presence. If the simple answer was just to be more chill, then why is there such a desire to impress by erasing? Many answers to be found if you decide to take chance on the Squip and go see Be More Chill.

Book Review... Emily A. Duncan, “Wicked Saints”
Tumblr media
Rating: 2.5/5 stars
Reviewer Comments: I picked this book up on a whim when I was browsing in a bookstore. Something about the cover and the premise intrigued me, and I got to reading it during my day off from an academic conference. It has a lot of the hallmarks of a typical YA fantasy: a girl with special abilities, a boy with a dark past, a magical war. If these things are up your alley, you will probably like this book. I personally found it to be a bit lacking because of the narrative structure - I don’t think emotional moments had room to breathe, so I had a hard time connecting with the characters and seeing value in their relationships. I did, however, like that the main female character was a cleric and the general Gothic vibe, and the magic systems were fun and intriguing. But other than that, I really wish the author had done a better job crafting her story, because I can easily see myself becoming more invested in the world of this novel.
***Full review under the cut.***
Summary: A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself. A prince in danger must decide who to trust. A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings. Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war. In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light.
Genre: young adult fantasy
Trigger Warnings: depictions of violence (including torture and self-harm)
Things I Liked
Religious Tones: Not only was the pantheon of gods fun to read about, but I loved the little details that reminded me of Gothic/medieval Christianity - namely, the mention of a scriptorium in the monastery, prayer beads, and canonical hours. I also really like dark religious vibes (when done right rather than for cheap thrills), so this book hit those buttons.
Magic System: I liked the way blood magic was portrayed in this book, as well as the divine magic used by Nadya (our main female character). The idea of each blood mage carrying around a book that they use (not consult) for their magic was really cool, and the way Nadya called on gods with her prayer beads was also fun, especially when the book described the gods being grumpy or amused when responding.
Malachiasz: Without spoiling anything, I will say that I did like this character. I like characters who defect from their societies in one way or another, as they have interesting perspectives and backstories. He had a lot of nice moments where he challenged Nadya’s beliefs, and their resulting conversations about religion were honestly well-crafted. I also appreciated that he wasn’t super broody - he had his dark moments, but he wasn’t wallowing in self-loathing all the time.
Serefin’s Relationship with his Companions: I really liked the laid-back, casual relationship Serefin had with Ostyia and Kacper. I’m not a huge fan of antagonists (if Serefin can be called that) having no close relationships, so it was nice to see someone of his archetype with close friends.
Vultures: Honestly, the Vultures’ aesthetic bumped my rating of this book up by a lot. I adore dark, creepy, eldrich creatures, and the Vultures made every scene better just by nature of their visual appearance.
Things I Didn’t Like
Narrative Structure: This book didn’t quite flow for me the way I wanted it to. It starts off with a bang (in that we’re dropped immediately into an action sequence), which in itself isn’t bad - my problem was more with the fact that I don’t have time to form connections with characters or sit with the significance of certain events or details before everything was changed. The story became a bit more streamlined when we reached the city where the king was, so that helped a lot, but once we were there, the story became more about court politics. Political intrigue is ok, but I didn’t feel was done in a way that I hadn’t seen before. I was most disappointed when character secrets and relationships are also told to us via the witch, Pelageya, rather than the mysteries unfolding organically, and when Nadya went back and forth trusting then not trusting Malachiasz. I wish the story built upon itself more, with character relationships developing rather than flip flopping all the time. The ending seemed to also come together with new lore all at once, without much buildup or suspense, and while I get that this is the first book of a series, I also want to be given the opportunity to piece things together, not be dazzled by surprises.
Prose: Duncan’s prose isn’t necessarily bad, but it isn’t really that interesting, either. While there are some moments that got me excited about the world, her prose didn’t stimulate my senses, as a reader. There was some telling rather than showing, but it wasn’t as much as I’d expect from a debut author. Still, I do wish more work had been done to immerse the reader in the story. She also repeated some things a lot - calling Malachiasz a “monster” and a “boy,” for example.
Telling: A lot of things are told to us rather than shown - specifically, regarding character backstories and worldbuilding. For example, from the beginning, we are told that Nadya is chosen by the gods and that she has unique powers, but not really shown why. We’re also expected to accept that Anna is an important figure to Nadya, even though we barely see them interact in meaningful, emotional ways. Significant details also felt dropped in randomly when it was no longer convenient to keep them a mystery. I remember being taken aback, for example, when the Vultures were finally mentioned - and they turn out to be integral parts of the plot!
Romance: While I love the enemies-to-lovers trope, I ultimately didn’t feel it was executed well in this book. Nadya seemed to push aside her beliefs a bit too readily in order to engage in her romance.
Recommendations: I would recommend this book if you’re interested in
Gothic fantasy, Slavic-inspired fantasy
clerics, blood mages
religious conflict

UConn Huskies women are the most dominant program ever with 100th win in a row
UConn women didn't need another win to cement their greatness, but it tasted sweet, anyway.
STORRS, Conn. — Coronation was the expectation for the UConn women’s basketball program Monday night and, given its dominance over the previous 99 games, how could you expect anything else?
UConn dispatched an opponent just like they had in every game since Nov. 17, 2014, this time with a win over No. 6 South Carolina 66-55. But this one felt different because it was different, no matter how much the star of the show wanted to downplay it.
“It’s not even the number that’s so special but it was the environment,” said forward Gabby Williams. “It was the fans. It was the alumni being here. It was the amount of coverage we had and how many people were watching the game. That’s what was special to me, it wasn’t really the number at all.” Williams was special in her own right, holding down the paint with 14 rebounds and a career-high 26 points.
There were numerous Husky alumni in the crowd as well — Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, and Morgan Tuck, among others. Williams credited Stewart and Tuck, in particular, with her development.
A 101-year-old woman from Stamford was in attendance. Her name is Emily, and she had never been to a UConn women’s game; but she made it to this one. This woman, who was alive before women had the right to vote, felt the need to take part in this moment.
This is Emily, she's got more years on this earth than UConn has wins in a row. That might change soon though. http://pic.twitter.com/8xtsHauuFV
— SB Nation CBB (@SBNationCBB) February 14, 2017
Throughout the streak, UConn has won everywhere from Tampa to Tulsa, but Gampel Pavilion is officially home. It rocked with a capacity crowd in what was a dogfight for the first half. Coach Geno Auriemma called the student section the best he’d seen in his three decades in Storrs.
The women have won 17 games during the streak at the XL Center in nearby Hartford. Later this week the Harlem Globetrotters will come to XL, one of the only teams in the history of the sport at any level with a longer winning streak than UConn’s. That’s how comically impressive this run is, it’s surpassed at the college or professional level only by an exhibition team that dazzles fans with parlor tricks in games tilted in their favor.
But UConn’s wins aren’t staged: They’re simply much better than everyone else.
This isn’t even the first time the Huskies have fried these Gamecocks, either. Almost two full years ago, a No. 1 South Carolina team came to Storrs boasting the nation’s best defense. UConn sent them back below the Mason-Dixon with a 15-point spanking. Last season in Columbia was a similarly competitive affair and the Huskies won by 12 points.
UConn suffered the indecency of merely beating a team by single digits just twice during this run. They’ve won by 65 points twice during this streak, they’ve won by more than 60 a staggering nine times. Along the way, Auriemma picked up win No. 900 in only 1,034 games in a 60-point win over Cincinnati. They’ve won with a scoring margin between 50-59 points 16 times, and have won 31 games by between 40 and 49.
In win No. 21, Auriemma benched the team’s two leading scorers, Morgan Tuck and Breanna Stewart, five minutes into the game and they still won by 46 on the road. They won 33 games by 20 or more points last season and they’ve done it 16 times in 25 tries this season.
At the beginning of the streak, Auriemma gave a halftime interview in which he said it was the worst the team had played in his time as its coach. They were up 23 at the time, and would win that game by 51 points.
Oh and ho-hum, they’ve won two national championships in a row during the streak, and four straight in total.
http://pic.twitter.com/S6zsY5PZfO
— Breanna Stewart (@bre_stewart30) February 11, 2017
Their competition is nearly exclusively themselves at this point, and Auriemma knows it.
“I kept saying to everyone that follows our team all year long, ‘We’re one injury, a couple fouls away from just being average at best.’ But, it was meant to be,” he said.
There were questions about this UConn team coming into the season, chief among them being how quickly this team could reload with Stewart, Moriah Jefferson, and Tuck going 1-2-3 in the 2016 WNBA draft and the current roster returning just two starters.
UConn wasn’t preseason No. 1 in the AP Poll, breaking a three-year run with that distinction. In this season’s opener, the streak nearly stopped in its tracks. A 78-76 win over Florida State saw the Seminoles up one point before a Napheesa Collier block and ensuing free throw preserved victory in the closing seconds.
“There were a lot of wins in the stands tonight and a lot of championships and if this would have been done by last year’s team I think it would have been less heroic, because it would have been, ‘Well of course they’re supposed to, look who they have. They have the three best players in America,’” Auriemma said.
“For this team to do it given where we started and where people projected us to be,” continued Auriemma, “given who we had coming back and given who everyone else coming back ... for them to do it I think is very appropriate.”
But about that 100 number.
Dropped these from the rafters when it was all over. http://pic.twitter.com/OGzBP8FRlo
— SB Nation CBB (@SBNationCBB) February 14, 2017
“I mean, what’s so different between 99 and a hundred kinda thing? I think it was just that what we have here is just so special and we got to really appreciate it tonight,” Williams said.
In truth there is little difference between wins 98, 99, 100, etc., but the numeral is indeed nice and round. You can wrap your head around it easily and it’s a nice multiple of 10. We use it to mark the passage of significant blocks of time, and it’s the first number in the sequence with triple digits. Children throw parties on the 100th day of school, and the most significant individual basketball achievement in the history of the game saw Wilt Chamberlain score 100 points.
Student tickets were going for as much as $50, a far cry from the $2 face value you could have gotten them for if you had purchased them in a season package. A student sitting right behind press row even remarked that, on any given night, Gampel Pavilion wouldn’t be packed to the gills. We parachute into the big moments, and let the game-by-game dominance just float into the ether. That can be monotonous to track. But a big, bold number like 100 forces everyone to pay attention.
When it was over, the team gathered at midcourt for a photo with their coach, Huskies old and new among them. UConn isn’t likely to lose again until at least the Final Four, and history will continue to perpetuate itself. For this particular team, a national championship at the end of the road will be something that they can call their own, and that’s the carrot on the end of their stick.
For now they’ll share in the spoils of 100, and on this night they are the queens wearing crowns for their coronation.
