Week 43 - January 21st, 2024 'The Highlands' - Marcus Warner Spotify / YouTube
"The deep sea holds more mysteries then can ever be understood by the likes of us, lad. But maybe if you surrender to it, you'll learn something in the force of its embrace."
An AU that is something born of the game Subnautica and then going absolutely off script from there. And though it is mostly just thoughts in my head at the moment, and a playlist I started while working on this, they have been very fun thoughts :3
Enjoy!

just a for fun cute peaceful drawing request I thought of
Amanda Young from Saw 2
swimming underwater in dark aquatic background by a abandoned shipwreck and alongside the Bull Shark Pup aka the shark protagonist from the game Maneater as it silently helps keep Amanda safe and protects her as she is facing her darkness fears exploring free diving further underwater.
while the Bull Shark Pup being it’s innocent curious self
Amanda be also gently petting the snout of Magu Tapa a legendary great white shark from the game Endless Ocean as it doesn’t pose a threat and is quite silently curious about Amanda despite how big it was compared to her. 🦈🤿🫧
Details: the ref images were to help show what I mean and the design of both The Bull Shark Pup and Magu Tapa
and what Amanda Young wears while underwater and uses.
Amanda would wear a black red white swimsuit
and black red diving fins on her feet and black red diving mask on her face. While she is breathing from the mini respirator scuba tank and has dive knife holster attached to her leg just in case for underwater self defense.
But she be both equally petting the snout of Magu Tapa and the Bull Shark Pup. while underwater
sorry if I’m bothering with this request just thought it be cute to see this in digital art but pls have a safe day or night and only do what’s comfortable!
Tumblr media
Thank you for such a cute request i love both amanda and sharks
hope you like it :)

I. AM. HYPE. 🙌
Literally named my Instagram username after my most favorite Wii game of all time and then they drop a trailer for an all new Endless Ocean??!? And here I thought it was wishful thinking that they'd port the first 2 games to Switch. But a whole new game with new animals and multiplayer???? BE STILL MY MERMAID HEART. Thank you, Nintendo. Just. Thank you. 😭💙🌊

Been playing endless ocean luminous even though it’s not that good. You can have sea creatures swim with you, most go for the big creatures. For me three are my favorite, besides isopods, the two fish are super tiny and it always looks my character has like fleas or flies as they swim around me😂

So it’s MerMay once again and I was feeling down that I wasn’t drawing any mers. But then I remembered these drawings from my endless oceans blue world au that I have. Basically I put our vapor wave dnd characters into the game. But since we have many characters I decided to make the dolphins merfolk so that we could fit more characters into it. So for the few people who do play the game, Sandia is the porpoise that you befriend and Soraen is the short beaked common dolphin that you get in the beginning of the game. My friend @chainsthatbindthisrouletteofmine ‘s character Aiden is the main diver you play as, and @palmtree-panic ‘s character Etheran is GG in this au.
Anyway this is all the art I have of it for now, but other then the concept art I did a mini comic of my favorite part in the whole game where a whale just shows up in the middle of the Cortica river for no reason. Idk I thought it was funny

Behold! My longest bind yet! Which is saying something, really. I began typesetting an anthology of @thychesters incredible zolu fics sometime last fall, printed the textblock in February, and finished the case... well, that's between me and god. Life happens! This was an unexpectedly tricky bind and I hope I did the gorgeous fics inside (and @loopeyfluff / @fluffyartbl0g's lovely fanart) justice!!
The cover is made of nine pieces, not including bookboard. I wanted VERY badly for the case to be entirely flush while still having an old-school layered appearance, so what you're actually looking at is filled blue fabric, a layer of white printed + foiled cardstock cut to lay against the corners, and then a layer of extremely thin translucent marbled paper with both the corners and negative space for the "labels" carefully cut out.
In order to gild the manga panel edit (taken from Sunny's introduction, btw) I printed and cut the cardstock, but before i glued it onto the bookboard i used washi tape, heat-reactive foil, and an iron (i'm cheap!) to carefully foil the parts that I wanted. This was my first time using proper toner-adhering heat reactive foil, and it was definitely a learning curve. I did lots of tests (sooo many foiled stickers. so many) and had a fun time. I'll definitely be using it in the future!!
After the layers of paper and fabric were pressed, I used metallic HTV to hide the seams and title the spine. It's a very neat effect, I think.
The edges of the textblock are also layered, with two coats of matte acrylic (pastel blue and green respectively) and one coat of green shimmer. The shimmer coat acts like a kind of sealant for the matte paints, so I didn't need to break out the beeswax this time. This was also one of the first sets I did with my guillotine (I cut it with Conquering and Spill Your Wine), which was an experience in and of itself.
I used white endbands and a 5mm white silk ribbon (looped this time; learned my lesson), then topped the bookmark off with a gold anchor charm. The textblocks are sewn with teal and green thread. And oh! And the endsheets are a teal, blue, green, and gold marble that's absolutely to die for—and kept staining everything blue the minute it touched moisture! Totally worth it though.
The typeset is my most colorful, I think. I went pretty heavy on the ocean themes because Kate has a really distinct pattern for her titles, and I wanted the book to follow!! I'm very pleased with how it turned out, and also endlessly delighted that Kate proofread her own typeset. That was very fun, hehe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, I think this was a very successful project despite the endless delays, and the final books look exactly like I pictured. I happy to send them to their new homes!! <3

In wake of recent events and allegations against Neil Gaiman, I would like to release a statement that I know no one asked for. Because I have not been doing very well as of late, and this was the cherry on the shit sundae.
I hope you all understand that, in doing so, I do not mean to take away any attention from the victims. I just have to get this off my chest and clear the air I feel is polluted at the moment.
Here's my long-winded timeline of my interaction with Gaiman's work. Underneath will be my statement on these allegations and what I will be doing moving forward.
I first got into Neil Gaiman's work in June-July of 2021, around my birthday, although I had seen some of his work unknowingly over the years.
I will never forget the first time I watched Good Omens, and I will never forget the joy it made me feel from the first few frames. I finished the show soon after. The message of the beauty in individuality and the inherent neutrality of humanity made me feel hopeful for the first time in a while.
I read the book in October 2021 and was officially hooked. I started engaging in the fandom and found a place online where I felt wholly accepted. I made fanart, read/wrote fanworks, etc.
I then expanded my Gaiman-Verse knowledge in April 2022 and began reading American Gods, Anansi Boys, Trigger Warning, etc...and found great inspiration and solace in these works as well.
On August 5th, 2022, I watched Sandman the morning it released on Netflix, beyond excited, and then bought one of the large books with the first few comics complied inside after finishing the show.
My love for The Sandman universe only grew, and I gained new outlooks on life inside the character's words and actions. Death of The Endless and Hob Gadling were two characters that helped me better understand how to truly appreciate the world around me and the time I am blessed to have in it.
I received the full collection of The Sandman comics for Christmas 2022 and nearly cried with elation. I read through them like a beast and was given more of the extended works in the series (like Death's solo comic) later that same holiday. I was also given The Ocean At The End Of The Lane, and finished it in two days flat. I loved Mrs. Hempstock and her words on humanity.
As time passed, my passion for Gaiman's literature/media didn't waver.
I started dating my partner on June 1st, 2023, and Gaiman's work was part of what helped us bond, in addition to our already-lovely chemistry.
The EVERY kiss spoiler leaked and sobbed with excitement, lol.
Good Omens S2 was set to be released a few days after my birthday. However, I was very sick on my birthday and was rather miserable.
My parents went out of their way to make me Good Omens cupcakes in secret, and it was one of my best birthdays, purely because my father put in the effort to design them, despite my never letting him watch the show (which has since been amended).
That Christmas, I was given quite a bit of Good Omens and Sandman merchandise and started growing my collection of copies of Good Omens.
On April 25th, 2024, I watched Dead Boy Detectives the day it released, having been excited for it since November 2023, and found another media in the Gaiman-Verse that I adored and saw myself in.
Flash forward to tonight, July 4th, 2024, and I am devastated.
I spent the majority of my teen years consuming Gaiman's content and engaging in the fandoms. During the time, I found true happiness and felt comfortable in my identity, and I refuse to lie and say my self-discovery was not aided by the media he created.
I know this is not about me, but about the victims, and I know the allegations have been brought to light by many shady news sources, but I must finish my piece with this:
When J.K Rowling exposed herself as a TERF, I had not realized I was queer yet, but I was still deeply disturbed for reasons unknown to me. I separated the art from the artist, as I had loved Harry Potter since I was seven, and it was a way my mother and I bonded during hard times. It also helped me get through the height of quarantine and the horrors of puberty.
When I discovered Gaiman's work and the fandoms his work's inspired, I felt relieved: here was a white cishet person who cared for minorities and who created media for minorities.
If the allegations are true (which they likely are), it turns out my hero doesn't deserve his cape.
I will do as I did with J.K Rowling, with a much heavier heart. The fans deserve the joy and inclusion Gaiman's work has created, even if he himself is vile. I will continue to consume his work indirectly and in no support to him.
I encourage everyone in the fandom to stay calm during this time.
It is okay to be angry, sad, and confused. However, it is not okay to ignore the allegations altogether or the trauma these women have experienced at the hands of Gaiman.
This fandom is a safe space for many people, and I beg that it will remain that way.
I send out much love to the women who were hurt, and I hope you both find contentment.

seeing you make oil paintings of elim garak has changed something about the way i perceive art, both in what others make but also in what i am capable of making.
it’s probably due to learning mostly euro-centric art history, but i’ve always thought of oil paintings as like the peak of painting ability? like, it’s fancy and it takes a while so i thought that it must be the best (ignoring the fact that my artistic field is mostly in acrylic paints and 3D sculpting and yet i still consider it very good). and i’m still working on disproving this sort of mentality that there are mediums inherently better than others, because it’s incredibly limiting to my creativity to impose a higharchy, and also it feels kind of xenophobic.
i digress a bit. point is, i’ve viewed oil paintings as a medium only deserving of gallery-type realistic portrait stuff, which is very much not what i do. i don’t make the sorts of fancy art rich people would pay for- the type of art i thought oils were for. i make paintings of comic book characters and sculptures of my personal heroes, i make jewelry and clothes and stuffed animals. stuff that i enjoy. which is good!
but still somewhere lurking in my brain was this voice telling me that on some level my works weren’t as meaningful or creative because they were fan works or made from materials i’m not an expert in or because the only people i draw and paint and sculpt are queer and trans, like me. that because my art was self-indulgent, on some level i suppose i thought it lesser.
but then i see your art. and holy shit! you’re work is INCREDIBLE! at first i was excited because, hey, i’m a big star trek fan, and garak is one of my favorite characters. i love coming across fan art of him, and it always manages to strike a chord with me. but then. as i looked at it closer, i realized it was on canvas. as i scrolled down i realize it was oil on canvas.
before, i’d pretty much only seen fanart as sketches on paper or digital drawings. one that is really only meant art-wise for quick sketches or planning of what will become “real” works, and one that doesn’t actually take up any physical space in our world, and is stored away in a little digital file.
but oil on canvas? that’s not meant to be thrown away, it’s meant to be held in gloved hands, as it is precious, and it’s not meant to be hidden away in the “files” on a laptop. no, those hang on the walls of museums or houses, meant to be displayed with pride for all to see.
and with those too colliding thoughts, that of fan works as some lesser form of art but oil paintings being the art of the rich and talented… well i realized that both were wrong. fan works are not in any way shape or form lesser than original works. what makes my layered ink painting of dream of the endless any less important than my painting of the ocean during a storm? nothing! they’re both good works. and on the other side, there is nothing that makes my oil paintings more important than my acrylic paintings or my sculpture or my knitting. it’s all art, lovely art, in the end. and the only thing that really matters is that i enjoy it.
seeing your art has helped me break some (minor) yet harmful thoughts i didn’t really even realize i had. so thank you for that. also your garak art is fucking good, and it really makes me think about what sort of life he would have after ds9. anyways, thank you. that’s what i’ve been meaning to say (that’s what this whole thing is). thanks for changing my vision for the better.
Oh wow! You know, it is very important and gratifying to know that results of your work make person rearrange their thoughts and views on something. Thank you for your sincerity! Now back to subject. I personally believe that fan work can be something fine and vice versa something fine can be a fan work. One thing that is very important to remember and remind yourself is that most of fine art that you've mentioned - gallery and most famous works (at least in european tradition) - are, well, derivative. Of Bible, of ancient myths. Yes. All this stuff can be considered maybe not fanart - but it is a subject for discussion - but illustration at least. And it is still fine art. Book illustrations - oh well. Sometimes I want to hang them on the wall, especially old ones. So - why not? Fan work always has a connotation of something derivative, and it certainly is... But just as well as most of the most prominent works. Dixi :D So that's the matter. Medium of course matters but medium does not always define the subject of art (except for common sense), as you've said. It's just maybe the cost of medium (some watercolor brushes for some reason cost... ehm. Too much :D) that defines its price, but not necessarily. I like thinking about this issue and discussing it... Plenty room for ideas. Thank you!

fanart for amazing fanfiction "Found in the School Library" by greevianguy (@hezek1ahwakely )
Tumblr media
spoiler for chapter 15
"Martin climbed over the railing before he had even realized he’d made a decision or had control over his body again. He pushed himself off the edge without a second thought towards the cold, anticipating grasp of the ocean, intending to find Jon and pull him out of it and back onto the safety of dry land. Instead, the white foam below him turned out to be a bank of fog. He crashed through it and he felt a cold shock before his nerves turned to ice. As if he had plunged into the ocean, schools of unnervingly elongated silver fish with humongous deep-sea eyes swept past him, like macabre children's kites—and he fell down and down and down; and his descent became slower,  and slower,  and slower— until everything was gone. Until it was just him, and only him, on and on, forever; and he had no hope left of ever finding Jon or seeing another soul ever again; until he knew for sure his mother wasn’t looking for him and had never even thought to; until he felt the world running out around him, suffocating him and leaving him truly alone in a dull blank nothing space—a similar but infinitely distant parallel to the endless swallowing hunger that had claimed his friend."
I can't properly express it, but this fanfic and "Lie down with me, my dear" from the same author are so close to my heart,, just read them, please

A trick of the eye...?
@ladysunami
🧜‍♂️🌊🐉 (Merman, Water Wave, Dragon), with this fanart as inspiration
There is a merman in the water. He has a beautiful, black tail with red accented scales, fins protruding from his forehead and forearms, and the darkest, most bewitching eyes.
Lan Wangji saw him when the tall wave curled over his ship and he had to quickly shift into his dragon form to avoid being dragged down under. It's within his nature to hate water, an airborne being at his core, but he especially hates restless water - and the storm that has suddenly hit the otherwise peaceful harbor has made it especially so.
The villagers have asked the Gusu Lan sect for assistance because they believe their waters are haunted - and perhaps they are right. But Lan Wangji doesn't have enough information to be able to tell whether the merman he just saw has anything to do with it or if he's himself been a victim of the haunting. After all, Lan Wangji's keen eyes did catch onto a wound on the merman's back, a bleeding hole between his shoulderblades as though he'd been bitten into.
Anyway, there isn't much he can do now that his boat has been destroyed, so he might as well turn around and back towards the village to wait the storm out.
He can't stop thinking of the merman, though. He looked... even though his kind are known to be so, Lan Wangji thinks this merman must have been among the most beautiful. The way his long hair danced into the water, the way he moved so quickly through the tall wave, the way that, for a moment, it felt like they locked eyes and recognized each other...
Lan Wangji enters his inn room and begins drying himself off, a cup of warm tea awaiting him there, courtesy of the host. His eyes inevitably draw towards the ocean as he sips at it.
---
Next morning, the sun shines over the ocean, dripping warmth and light onto its calm surface. There are no signs of the storm of yesterday, the water undulating in small waves that gently lap at the shore.
It is only the endless amount of deep sea shells and dead little crabs that remind of the powerful waves and the howling wind that roused the water only a night before.
Lan Wangji walks along the shoreline, eyes scanning the horizon. He can pinpoint the place where he saw the merman yesterday, and has half the mind to fly over there, or at least rent a boat and paddle.
"You lookin' for someone?" A voice interrupts, and Lan Wangji turns to the source of it. His skin prickles only a little bit when he's met with a familiar face.
"It's you..."
"Yep! In the flesh! Well... the human flesh at least!" He laughs, "I'm Wei Ying! I've been living in these waters for the past five years or so!"
"Lan Zhan. Lan Wangji. I take it that you know these waters well."
"I sure do! You're probably here for the haunting, right?" Wei Ying says, leaning down to pick up a particularly colorful seashell. "I don't know what it is either. I'm a cultivator too, and I've been trying to catch it and kill it, but it's so elusive!"
"Mn. I believe the storm yesterday was its doing."
"Yeah, it was! That's why I came to check up on you, the thing likes to drown people a lot."
Lan Wangji nods, and feel his eyes drawn towards Wei Ying's back, where he knows he is injured despite his clothes. "It tried hurting you too."
"Hm?"
"On your back."
Wei Ying waves a dismissive hand. "Oh no, that was just a harpoon."
Lan Wangji finds it worrisome that Wei Ying is so used to being haunted but knows it is not his place to ask. They are strangers, after all.
"Want to join forces to catch this thing? I've never worked with a dragon shifter, you guys are fascinating."
Lan Wangji tries not to be irritated. "I am not looking to be anybody's case study."
"No, no, I won't run any experiments on you, I promise! I know how terrible that is!"
Lan Wangji feels compelled to ask for details again, increasingly concerned for Wei Ying's safety, but still doesn't find it in himself to say anything.
"I just want to observe you. And maybe clean up my harbor of monsters in the process. What do you think?"
Lan Wangji sighs, already won over by the pleading eyes. "Mn."
"Awesome!"

Reading a great fanfic isn’t all fun and games. Sure, the thought of encountrering a captivating story sounds thrilling but, it’s not always the same for everyone. So goes for the non fastpass enjoyers.
Non fast pass enjoyers encounter a weekly ritual of madness following the latest update of another chapter. This could include squealing, lots of squealing, depending on the genre it could be could be either screaming, crying or raging. Screenshots, many screenshots are a byproduct of this weekly event. Endless scrolling through social media’s very limited posts, and even scarcer fanfics are a trademark of the most obsessed and rabid fans.
But what happens on that one day, when all the stars and all the planets align. When Heaven suddenly opens up ,and we are once again blessed with another chapter. Welll, it’s quite the messy affair. First of all, we encounter the 5 stages of grief:
Denial: After reading a chapter, we often remain stonefaced in front of the screen, only then reacting 5 seconds later, screams rocking through the earth’s core. We deny that we have already read it, so we read it again, and again, and again, and again ti’ll we have counted all the lines in each panel, and each and every panel ingrained into the back of our eyelids.
Anger: Second comes anger. After reading a particularly good chapter, we might rage after a cliffhanger, throwing our phones, kicking, screaming in a violent rage. We question why the chapter seemingly got shorter despite it being exactly the same amount of panels as before. We question why our characters did as they did. WE QUESTION WHY THE FUCK WERE WE LEFT ON A MOTHERHECKING HOT PANEL OF BUDDY WITHOUT ANY OTHER CONTEXT BUT; “BUDDY.”
Bargaining: After a long winded meltdown we now go to bargaining. We now search every nook and cranny of the fandom for any leaks, fanart, fanfics and much more to feed our unholy obsessions. We try to convince ourselves not to spend those out last dime on webtoon coins as we rock ourselves to sleep, the last panels repeating in our brain like a broken kinetograph.
Depression: After again sweeping through the fandom, we now find ourselves at loss. The lack of content gets to us as we cry alone in an empty room, counting down the days, the hours, the minutes and the seconds until the next chapter. Until then, we go about our daily lives, lacking vigor, and excitement for what may come tomorrow unless it’s Cinderella Boy. 🤬🤬🤬
Acceptance: We accept that we have to wait another agonizingly long 6 days. Deprived of content. Wasting away, scrolling through the vast ocean of webtoons. But none shall hold a candle to what we have previously read the day before. Cinderella Boy.
In short, FUCK YOU BUDDY. STOP BEING SO DAMN HOT. KISS KISSS KISS. 😭😭😭
GAY AF
Ah, I seemed to have lost my composure over there. But nonetheless, this is the journey of an average webtoon enjoyer. Ti’ll the next week! Goodbye my friends.
