NOT THE TIME FOR SILENCE
I refuse to stand aside while this happens...
All telecommunications and internet has been cut off in Gaza for almost an hour. The bombing got worse than it had been this week. Two hospitals have been threatened - that's what we knew BEFORE they lost connection.
Israel's isolated Gaza and is striking them from the sea, air and ground NOW. Ethnic cleansing/genocide is taking place NOW.
To all bloggers here on Tumblr, don't be on the side of genocide with your silence.

In 1901, Liang Qichao, a prominent Chinese journalist, wrote an essay entitled “The New Rules for Destroying Countries” (“Mieguo xinfan lun”).
In it, he presented what he had come to understand were the patterns of nineteenth-century Euro-American colonial-imperialist world domination into which China was being drawn. Egypt is the first among five examples he cited of a people and a state crushed by these “new rules.” No simple military invasion or despoiling occupation, the new rules proceeded under a subtler logic. According to Liang, English financial advisers had inserted themselves into the Egyptian court, inducing the state to indebt itself so completely that international bankers could take over from within. This ingenious mode of domination constituted what Liang called “formless dismembering,” hardly detectable as it proceeds, and announcing itself suddenly once it has taken place. Without quite articulating it, Liang was theorizing the advent of finance capitalism in relation to colonialism, with Egypt at its core. [...]
---
Aaron Jakes [...] takes up the relation between imperialist domination through the financialization of capitalism in the colonies [...] in his comprehensive account of the British occupation of Egypt from 1882 to 1914. [...] The [financial] crises, produced in the metropole [London, Paris, New York, etc.], were analytically and practically worked out by yoking colonies as productive places and colonials as laboring and culturally marked/racially othered bodies to metropolitan concerns over empire [...], making Egypt a “laboratory in which to settle those greater questions of the Empire” (25). [...] [T]he original goal of British colonial governance was to enhance [...] cotton-growing for export to the global market and capital investment/speculation. [...] The British restructuring of rural space and agrarian social relations [...] severely constrained the room for maneuver of the Egyptian peasantry, who had long used the porousness of the relations among land, property, labor, and power to gain whatever advantages they could. Peasants were now locked firmly in place, and when [...] [financial] crisis hit, their indebtedness left them relatively defenseless. By 1905, superficial prosperity hid roiling discontent with economic development but also with colonial legitimacy. [...]
---
[T]he Egyptian journalist Ahmad Hilmi recognized the British discourse of development as “gilded speech” that created an economistic reality without accounting for the lived complexity of actual Egyptians. As Jakes puts it: “despite the occupation’s command over the means of representation, the shared sentiments and experiences of the Egyptian people were irreducible to the charts and tables that adorned the pages of Cromer’s annual reports” (118).
In comparing Egypt’s poverty to the British-produced poverty of Ireland, for example, the economic boom of gushing capital investment was revealed to be a mechanism of wealth accumulation for the few. [...] [T]he gap between rhetoric and reality [...].

The Iron Harp
We’re all in prison together, Johnny, one way or the other.
Act 1
Outwardly, Joseph O'Conor's play is a simple tale of love and loss in times of war: set in rural Ireland in early April of 1920, the action takes place on the property of an English industrialist whose mansion has been taken over by a contingent of IRA volunteers. Their leader is Michael O'Riordan, a gifted poet-musician in civilian life and conveniently the peace-time manager of the Englishman's estate. Michael has recently been wounded in action; now blind as a result he is no longer on active duty but still responsible for an English prisoner of war. Being a man of his word, Captain John Tregarthen has made no attempt to escape, earning Michael's trust and eventually his friendship. He also earns the friendship and love of Michael’s cousin Molly Kinsella, with whom he spends long days roaming the extensive grounds of his idyllic prison. Dreaming of a future life together, the lovers are oblivious to the feelings of their “best friend” – who ends up sacrificing his love for Molly in what he hopes will be a lasting gesture of selflessness only to find that Fate intervenes, with devastating consequences for them all.
Completing the quartet of characters is the dark and “indistinct” figure of IRA commander Sean Kelly, a dark and "indistinct" figure who emerges from the shadows to immediately assert his authority not only in military matters but - crucially, and disturbingly - in those of the heart as well. Specifically, it is the heart of Michael O’Riordan that Kelly claims to know better than O’Riordan himself. As a flesh-and-blood character Kelly is difficult to pin down: cold and calculating by his own admission, he expresses admiration for Michael's hot-blooded fighting spirit. Michael's own startled response to Kelly entering "like Nemesis himself" is ambiguous at best, and even his description of Kelly as a “good friend” comes on the back of a warning to Johnny that "he won't like you."
When Kelly tells Michael that he has never been wrong and does not know what it means to feel regret, the sense of foreboding is inescapable, yet Michael never seems to give in to the negativity emanating from his old wartime comrade who admonishes him to see his friends “as they really are” and not as “you want to see them.” Ironically, Michael refuses to see an enemy in John Tregarthen, but he is equally stubborn in applying the same criteria of honour, loyalty, and friendship to Sean Kelly, who seems troubled by this flaw in Michael’s character: "you love people too much."
Michael's emotional warmth stands in stark contrast to Kelly's impersonation of infallibility - which Michael seems to accept as a token of his friend's unassailable integrity. He continues to defer to Kelly's judgment when a messenger arrives with bad news from the front: three IRA fighters have been killed in skirmishes with British forces, and reprisals must be carried out. Twisting the metaphorical knife in the very real emotional wound, Kelly as the commanding officer nominates blind Michael to be the impartial instrument of God's justice. Forced to select three victims for execution, Michael all but collapses when one of the chosen names is that of Captain John Tregarthen.
Act 2
After he has persuaded Johnny to flee the country and reunite with Molly back in England, Michael is left alone to guard the now empty house. Blind and unable to defend himself, Michael is powerless against two marauding Black & Tans who break into the property and proceed to taunt and abuse the solitary occupant. It does not take them long to realize their victim is an IRA member rather than a civilian enjoying certain protections. Further violence is prevented only by the surprise return of Captain Tregarthen, armed and in uniform, who holds the attacker at gunpoint until Kelly and his entourage arrive to take the men away. Where any other human being would have expressed relief or gratitude at the discovery that the life of his friend has been saved, Kelly’s reaction is characteristically impassive, betraying, if anything, a degree of irritation at the unforeseen complication that has shown the condemned prisoner – the enemy – to be capable of compassion and self-sacrifice in saving the life of his friend. Human qualities that Kelly explicitly claims not to possess. As if to prove the point, he responds with the formal announcement of Tregarthen’s impending execution.
The order is to be carried out within three days, enough time for Kelly to travel to headquarters - and return with a firing squad. But first he must interrogate the captured Tans. While Kelly is thus occupied, Molly manages to convince the love of her life to take her with him. Johnny only agrees to the plan on the promise that Michael will convince Kelly to rescind the execution. If Johnny and Molly can make their way to Belfast on the early morning goods train, and from there to England, all will be well. Michael knows how to distract the guards, and Molly can bribe the train driver to let Johnny jump aboard. Three loud whistles will give the all-clear. With hopes of future happiness rekindled, Molly and Johnny each rush off to their respective tasks, and Michael is left alone with three empty glasses that he cannot see – a detail that does not escape Kelly’s notice as he re-joins Michael to formally accept his plea for clemency. Which he says he will duly submit to "the general," but in his estimation the chances of success are slim. "For God's sake, don't build up hope," he tells Michael before agonizing – to himself – over how to soften the blow for Michael: by bringing the execution forward and keeping it secret, he is certain he can spare Michael the pain and the guilt of having to witness the event.
Act 3
In the pre-dawn hours of the following day, Michael and Johnny are wide awake and waiting for the sentries to change and the train to whistle. Thinking the house empty and their enemies far away, they pass the time in a dreamlike state of high anxiety, reciting heroic poems and melancholy songs in whispering voices, so as not to miss the stroke of six to mark the end of their nightmare and the beginning of a new life – only to see Kelly standing in the door, with orders for Johnny to be executed at dawn, 24 hours earlier than they were told originally. Michael's world is falling apart, he pleads with Kelly, he begs him to show mercy, but an almost equally distressed Kelly reminds him that "I have never promised you hope." Johnny declines the comfort of a priest or minister and is led away to meet his fate offstage while, also offstage, Molly will be waiting in vain for the love of her life to board a train that will never arrive.
Left on stage for their final confrontation are Michael and his Nemesis, both knowing full well that nothing they can do or say will change what Kelly might term the preordained outcome of their efforts. To Michael's accusation of "trickery" (by which he means Kelly's surprise return before the agreed time), Kelly offers no subterfuge, no defence, and no evasion. Instead, he says, Michael’s agony is self-inflicted: it was, in fact, his own stubborn insistence on hoping against hope that has now led to anguish and pain. The only way for Michael to end all suffering, Kelly explains, is to give up hope. Unless he manages to see past the private pain of the moment and becomes a distant observer, Michael will forever be "tortured by hope."
Here Kelly is borrowing from the Conte Cruel tradition made famous by Edgar Allan Poe but named after a collection of short stories by the French symbolist writer Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. A useful definition of the genre is that it concerns "any story whose conclusion exploits the cruel aspects of the irony of fate." Not only does Kelly borrow the concept, and the title from Villiers' tale, The Torture of Hope, he even recounts the plot to underline his point:a hapless victim of the Inquisition escapes his prison cell only to stumble into the arms of the Chief Inquisitor. The lesson for Michael is that, like the victim, he keeps on hoping for release only to suffer defeat over and over again. There are no similarities, however, between himself and the sadistic Inquisitor, Kelly says: his mission is to ease Michael'ssuffering, not to prolong it.
We are given no reason to doubt Kelly’s sincerity, but neither can we reconcile the apparent contradiction between his declared intention and putting Michael’s best friend before a firing squad. If Kelly wants to end all suffering, as he says, surely, a good start would be to save Captain Tregarthen’s life? It is the argument that Michael himself is trying to make, by reminding Kelly of his god-like powers. Michael’s understanding of those powers differs fundamentally from Kelly’s own. Michael’s life-affirming principle of hope and Kelly’s seductive all-consuming fatalism are the two opposing philosophies that take centre stage in the final scene – while John Tregarthen dies a largely symbolic death offstage.
Johnny’s death is symbolic in that it is not the tragedy at the heart of the play. Michael O’Riordon is the conventional male protagonist whose existential crisis we are witnessing; Michael is unable to prevent the execution of his best friend; and to make that very point, his best friend must die. Michael’s blindness contributes to this failure in the course of the play but read as a metaphor it turns Michael into “one of us.” His blindness leaves him vulnerable to attack and it echoes our own sense of powerlessness in the face of an overwhelmingly hostile universe. The reverse, however, is also true: being blind, and being a poet, puts Michael in the illustrious company of the Blind Bard, an archetype of Western literature since at least the (mythical) time of Homer: the blind singer/seer whose “inner vision” surpasses that of sighted humanity. His Irish equivalent – and explicit model for Michael - is the (dwarf) Harper of Finn, whose iron-stringed instrument has the power to move its audience to tears. Michael O’Riordon is both vulnerable and endowed with the superpower of emotional insight – fundamentally human qualities that Kelly admires in Michael, and which he admits he does not possess.
Kelly is an abstract concept in human form; even while he is evidently the cause of human suffering, in his denial he appears to be channelling the sadistic Inquisitor. The apparent contradiction is of our own making, though: Kelly is Cruel Fate personified. He represents that which we like to imagine as the source of all our woes - the betrayals, the injustices, the disappointments which inevitably end in what we define as tragedy and what to the rest of the universe, that hostile universe, is of no consequence whatsoever. If we substitute “hostile” with “indifferent,” then Kelly becomes the antithesis to Michael’s humanity – his indifference is as inhuman as the infinite, indifferent universe. Conversely, Michael is not concerned with an infinite universe; his frame of reference is on a human scale, and very finite. Finite. When Kelly challenges Michael to take his place and adopt his abstract, God-like perspective on life, death, and the universe, Michael does reject the responsibility – but also the indifference required for the position. If the promise of a pain-free existence did not convince Michael to abandon hope, Kelly's failure to shame him into admitting defeat is a testament, at the very least, to human perseverance: we will forever be prolonging the agony to delay the inevitable. When did he say it was about Palestine? He said it was about reproductive rights. He said it when it came out. He didn't say it was about Palestine. Stop lying to serve your own agenda.
Like I get it I want Palestine to be free too but making shit up isn't going to help Palestinians (in fact, since it's not true, it's going to make people lose trust in the Palestinian cause and its advocates! You are doing something that is actively going to make people mistrust and dislike us and by extension what we stand for and you don't at all see how that's a bad thing?)
You're not helping. You're actually kind of being a nuisance.
I'm not lying, and I'm annoyed that I'm being accused of lying for correctly interpreting lyrics which are not especially subtle.
Yes, Swan Upon Leda is mostly about abortion, but it is also about the colonization and occupation of Ireland and that of Palestine. Hence the lyrics "empire upon Jerusalem" and "occupier upon ancient land."
Nor am I an outlier in this interpretation. The Genius annotations reference Palestine, as do many reviews of the single when it came out. As the Harvard Crimson notes:
In the last line of the chorus, Hozier broadens the scope of resistance covered in the song, connecting the interpersonal violence of the “swan upon Leda” to the international violence of Israel’s “empire upon Jerusalem.” Previously, the singer has compared colonialism in Ireland and Palestine; in May, 2021, he signed a pro-Palestine open letter that highlighted the similarities between historical English policies in Ireland and Israel’s actions in Palestine.
More recently, Hozier has shared calls for a permanent ceasefire, issued a special vinyl release of Swan Upon Leda to raise money for Warchild, spoken about the conflict on stage at some of his concerts, and shared various insta stories on the horrific death toll in Palestine, as well as a couple charity posts from Irish Artists for Palestine.
Accurately stating views which Hozier has repeatedly expressed in his lyrics and in public statements is not lying, and pushing back on people falsely accusing me of lying is not "being a nuisance."

JOY OF SEX - Very non-PC Martha Coolidge high school sex comedy from 84. I heard that she didn't have full control of it and disowns it now. Underneath all the sleaze, it's a lighthearted look at sex and death from a girl's perspective. Michelle Meyrink and Cameron Dye are really solid in it as kids going through uncomfortable shit.
SHREDDER ORPHEUS - This reminded me of BUCKAROO BANZAI, BRAZIL, REPO MAN, and PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. It has a good post-punk soundtrack too. It falls somewhere between Faith No More, INXS, & Bauhaus. It was really original and unique. It has that shoddy creepozoid labor of love feel. Wears its aesthetics on its sleeve and is really cool despite being dated. A very likeable movie.
THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY - I happened to watch RYAN'S DAUGHTER (David Lean movie about a woman having an affair set in Ireland during WWI) because it was on TCM, and it got me interested in seeing more about the history of the fight for Irish independence. This was good but the tone is really dark and sad, which makes it kind of a tough watch. It shows how Irish people in the 1920s were split and turned against each other because of the English occupation and subsequent "independence" treaty, which was accepted by some and rejected by others.
MONOLITH - This had an intriguing idea about an unsolved mysteries kind of podcaster investigating the appearance of enigmatic dark bricks. While decently made, this ultimately feels more like a radio play as there isn't much in the way of action or visuals. It's all scenes of a woman on the phone or on her computer. Considering this, it's pretty impressive how engaging it is.
IN THE LAND OF SAINTS AND SINNERS - Liam Neeson as a hitman in rural Ireland who becomes the target of a small IRA group. This was a surprisingly good little action movie. I was very surprised to see the return of Jack "Joffrey Baratheon" Gleeson, who I'd heard had retired from acting. His role as the brazen and reckless successor to Neeson's aging assassin seems like it was written to help him slough off the Joffrey typecasting. Kerry Condon is also great as the IRA group leader who will stop at nothing to avenge her brother.

Character Profile — Ireland
Tumblr media
Character Name: Éire. The Republic of Ireland, the Island of Ireland. Brighid Kelly, Brid Ó Ceallaigh, Bridgie, Aunt Bridgie, Auntie, Mum, Mam. Imbolc or St. Brighid's Day is the spring festival in ancient times and under the Catholic Church and she kept it for that reason. The night will end.
Age: Late 30s, modern day.
Height: 5''8/173cm
Physical Description: Brighid spent the most time with their mother and shared her looks the most. Her circumstances have changed in innumerable ways, but Brighid carries herself like the druid and warrior queen her mother raised her to be. Not hunger, hardship or her reduced place in the world ever bent her back, and now she stands free and tall in her own right. Very fair, she's got a smattering of freckles across her body, a sharp face with what can bee an otherworldly beauty to her. Her people populated much of her brother's children, and her looks have added a slightly ethereal look to them in the right light or surreal circumstances, resulting in both Alfred and Jack being mistaken for changelings.
Eye colour: Green. But not only the green of her isle but the churning blues and greys of the sea. Her eyes can't quite decide what colour they want to be and will vary on her clothes and the lighting.
Hair colour/style: Red. Hibernian gold was a red gold metal, likely mixed with copper, from Ireland in ancient times, and her hair is that exact shade. She has always worn it long, often bound up with ribbons, a snood, or just braided. It's curly, especially when she can care for it in modern times.
Personal Appearance/Style: In the modern day, she likes fine things. Irish-made linens and wools, and like most nations of her age, she doesn't like artificial products. Deprived of much of her dignity for much of history, she takes much pride in her appearance now and wears nice jewelry and clothes for most occasions. She wears many wool sweaters, high-waisted trousers and boots out in the country and still tends to wear a nightgown to sleep out of habit.
Verbal Style: Speaks English with her Irish accent and refuses to do otherwise. Speaks Irish in all the surviving dialects and some that are no longer alive.
Level of Education: A thousand years ago, she was the most educated person in Europe, with Irish monasteries and nunneries preserving much of European knowledge. But in the intervening centuries, stripped of much of her cultural knowledge and education increasingly only available in English, she felt somewhat behind in technology because she was trying to fucking survive, but always made a point to seek out new information when she could and probably taught a hedge school herself in the 18th century. From Alfred's independence, she kept a close correspondence with him. When she became independent in her own right, it was with a lot of American capital and encouragement, as well as infusions of cash from American institutions; she became one of the most educated countries in Western Europe and the world again by the end of the 20th century.
Occupation: These days, she works as an Irish teacher, sometimes even in the preschools when she's in a maternal mood, but she is also a diplomat, political activist, businesswoman and
Past Occupations: Weaver, farmer, nun, abbess, governess, union organizer, activist, labourer, teacher, social worker, factory worker, tailor, charwoman, cobbler, laundress, dressmaker, milliner, brewster, distiller, embroiderer, dyer. You name it; she's probably done it to survive.
Skills, Abilities or Talents: She's incredibly talented at all things textile. Embroidery, weaving, springing, making flax and fleece in to linen and wool. She's skilled at navigation and boats, but on a smaller scale than her brother or nephews, and prefers to stay closer to the shore. She's also incredibly musically and artistically gifted with her Celtic influence found across the world. Fiddle, harp and her voice are her favourites but she can just about play or sing anything put in front of her.
Admirable Personality Traits: Friendly, passionate, blunt, welcoming, warm, affectionate and witty.
Negative Personality Traits: Angry, moody, depressive, stubborn, and impatient but she has literally no reason not to be those things considering her history, christ.
Sense of Humor: Playful, subversive, a bit twisted, and loves a good use of word play or a pun.
Physical/Mental illness or affliction: She's been through so much, and it shows in her body. She's had problems with her digestive tract for decades, anemia, and a lot of trauma. She's remarkably well-adjusted, considering her history. However, her friends and her brother's children still get phone calls in what should be the dead of night for Brighid, and it is usually the morning for him because she's having a bad day. She'll call Alasdair more often than the other two of her brothers and Alfred, but her relationship with Alfred is a lot more of her giving him advice than him comforting her. A lot of the time, she calls Jack at the asscrack of dawn for him to wake him up and maybe accidentally hears a confused, sleepy "Mum?" like he's still small enough to cradle in her arms. But they talk a lot. She was probably the first of her siblings to go to therapy, second in the family only after Matt.
Hobbies/Interests: Reading, embroidery, knitting, hiking, shinty, hurling. She's getting more fit these days and more able to do exerting activities. Baseball was largely taken from a game called rounders, and she'll throw a ball around, but also dearly loves hurling and Gaelic football.
Favourite Foods: Brighid doesn't have a single favourite food. Bread, cheese, smoked salmon, boxty, barmbrack, soda bread, stew, colcannon and champ, spagbol, meat and veg, steak and chips, toasties, tikka masala, fish and chips. She was thrilled when Jack learned how to cook Greek and Italian and wanted to show it off, and she's always down to have some beers and go absolute ham on some pub food with Alfred.
Most important personal item: I don't think, with her insane history, she got to keep anything personal her entire life. But I think she has a set of very nice emeralds that Alfred gave her when she first came to America that she's incredibly fond of. A lot of her best jewelry is from Alfred.
Person/friend close to character: She's fairly close to her brothers all things considered, but things are certainly easier with Rhys and Alasdair than with Arthur. Two thousand years of fuckery isn't exactly water under the bridge, but it's not exactly brought up in every conversation, either if only because Brighid is tired. She's very close to Alfred, which I'm only recently exploring, but the sheer amount of Gaelic songs about America and Australia gives me fucking emotions. Her situation got so much less desperate after Alfred intervened at certain points, and I think he probably even gave her an allowance anonymously because she deserved so, so much more than his people or the United Kingdom was giving her, and he's very fond of her. Jack's her baby boy in every way, except he calls her his aunt most of the time because Arthur sorted it that way.
Brief family history: She was born to Brigantia/Brittania in the pre-roman period, she's not exactly sure how old she is, but she's older by at least 300 years than Alasdair and more like 500 for Rhys and Arthur. Her relationship with her siblings is difficult, to say the least, but she especially shares close linguistic ties with Alasdair. Her brother's children are also very important in her life, with Alfred forming an incredibly important part of her life, politics, history and economy. Things are occasionally difficult between her and Alfred, but generally, it's a good relationship. She's emotionally closest with Jack, feeling stronger maternal feelings with him than his brothers because of her role in both his earliest years and him being the most Irish nation outside of Ireland.
Most painful experiences in the character’s past: Where in god's name do I even start? When they buried their mother in the late ancient period, maybe the 4th century for her as a person? The famine would probably be the worst, how it hollowed her out for generations, the hell on earth of being rolled onto a coffin ship and burning with fever in a shed in Toronto before Matt and Alfred can finally get her to America. She's seen famine, plagues, invasions, and everything in between.
Their Song: The Voice by Celtic Woman

All your fic idea sound delightful but I’m very curious about the Magician Nephew x LOTR crossover and the Another MGME but it's just my OCs from my historical fiction novel!
Ask me about my not-yet-written-fics from this list
Okay, so:
,Magician's Nephew x LOTR crossover
It's so easy to make this work.
Jill and Diggory have magic rings that transport them to the wood between worlds. In theory, the wood contains portals to every world that has ever existed, or ever will exist, right?
So the events of the magician's nephew happen. They wake Jadis, get chased by her all the way back to the wood, and then they run for the nearest pool. And rather than it being home they run for the one that happens to be Middle Earth.
Jadis still grabs onto Digg's ankle.
(Debating on whether or not to include uncle andrew. It does involve them having to go back to England in between their trip to the dying world, and then for some reason back to the wood. Maybe the whole lampost situation happens still idk. I do just love the idea of Jadis and Uncle Andrew traipsing through Middle Earth).
I have not fully decided which age to put them in but there IS something immensely funny about Diggory and Jill wandering around Middle Earth with some magic rings.
And also for some reason Diggory and Jill end up with one ring color, and Jadis (and also potentially Uncle Andrew) wind up with the other ring color, and/or there just aren't enough rings and somebody ends up with all the green ones).
They wind up separated and traipsing around looking for each other and/or trying to separate Uncle Andrew and Jadis. I think it's best if maybe Uncle Andrew and Jadis have the green rings, but aren't willing to leave without also having the yellow ones.
Jill and Diggs wind up in Rivendell (obviously I MUST include Elrond) and give everyone a heart attack because they have a funny little yellow ring that absolutely rubs Vilya the wrong way and doesn't match any Music in middle earth. Meanwhile apparently according to them there are Some Very Dangerous People wandering around with another set of weird magic rings.
I want Jadis to decide that she absolutely wants to be queen of Middle Earth and to try very hard to launch a campaign for it.
Also want Jadis to find out that there are other magical objects and to try and collect them all like Pokemon, and to be a royal pain in EVERYONE'S (including Sauron's) ass.
Anyway that's it that's the idea.
MGME But It's Just My OCs From My Hisfic Novel
okay to make this make sense you gotta understand that within the actual history post the book I wrote, two of the main characters get killed.
(the book is set during the very last year of the nine years' war in Ireland, where Hugh O'Neill, High King of Ireland and Chieftain of Ulster fought against the colonizing English army. He had convinced Spain to help him (Catholics vs Protestants), but the Spanish pulled out and Baron Mountjoy (British occupation) essential starved the Irish out by burning all their crops, and eventually Hugh signed a treaty after one final stand in Ulster. Baron Mountjoy smashed the stone of kings, where all the High Kings of Ireland had been crowned for thousands of years, and formally began the occupation, moving British colonizers in to take over the farmland in Ulster and press the Irish into serfdom.
ANYWAY. So that's the background. Later Hugh and his ally Rory O'Donnell go to Spain to try and muster up some more help, but they wind up actually getting sick and dying during the trip.
So my OCs are Hugh's wife and daughter. (Hugh was, historically, a terrible husband and I am an absolute slut for messy toxic dynamics). The OC winds up with Rory in the end bc he was historically a Really Cool Guy.
So naturally, instead of them dying later I'm like 'haha what if they just got transported to Middle Earth'.
I have not thought this through very hard but I would obviously like the Classic 'they wind up in Rivendell' because again, Elrond, obviously obviously.
Mostly SOL but I could also see Rory and Hugh going "oh, there's another colonizer who wants to destroy the free people of THIS land??? Fuck him. We're absolutely joining that fight."
I could see this being set in the second age actually during the first founding of Rivendell (and so Rory and Hugh and up in TLA) but I could also see them at Pelennor in the TA, but unfortunately that means that my OC mom doesn't get to meet Cel :( And I want them to be friends. They would get along so well.
Elrond, of course, parents both OCs (even though one of them is a grown ass mom) because I want him to. Also he hisses at Hugh. Because he's trash.
Alternatively they could wind up sometime in the early third age and join the war against Angmar and then we still get Cel. I'm not picky.
This one is more vague and I mostly daydream about SOL situations of my OCs in Rivendell but there's definitely A Plot in there somewhere.

GENERAL BACKSTORY
WAS BORN IN SOMERSET, ENGLAND TO AN ENGLISH FATHER AND AN IRISH MOTHER
MOVED TO IRELAND WHEN SHE WAS AROUND 2 YEARS OLD AFTER HER FATHER DIED
WOULD COME BACK TO ENGLAND TO VISIT HER GRANDMOTHER AT FENRIRS WOOD REGULARLY AT HER GRANDMOTHER'S REQUEST. HER MOTHER COULD NEVER SAY NO AS SHE FEARED WHAT HER GRANDMOTHER WOULD DO
HARPER'S MOTHER SPENT HER CHILDHOOD TELLING HER MAGIC WASN'T REAL, THAT IT WAS ALL A JOKE HER GRANDMOTHER BELIEVED IN, THAT ANYTHING TO DO WITH HER WOULD BE DANGEROUS, BUT HARPER DIDN'T CARE. HARPER LOVED HER GRANDMOTHER AND WISHED TO SEE HER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
SHE LOVED MAGIC, SHE LOVED THE SPIRITS, SHE LOVED THE FREEDOM SHE FELT INSIDE WHENEVER SHE CONNECTED WITH THEM
SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN TOWN AS A KID, USUALLY RUNNING OFF SOMEWHERE THE MOMENT ANYONE TOOK THEIR EYES OFF HER
HAD AN AFFINITY FOR THE WOODS AND NATURE, HER FAVOURITE PLACE BEING HER GRANDMOTHER' GARDEN AS IT USUALLY WOULD BE FILLED WITH MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF PLANTS AND MAGICAL ELEMENTS
AT THE AGE OF SIX, SHE DEMANDED TO MEET HER GRANDMOTHER'S FRIENDS WHO ONLY SHE COULD SEE. HER GRANDMOTHER OBLIGED
THE RITUAL TO ALLOW HARPER TO BECOME A GHOST WHISPERER WAS CAST ON SAMHAIN, TO WHICH HARPER DIDN'T RESPOND TO AS WELL AS HER GRANDMOTHER HAD HOPED
HARPER BECAME TERRIFIED OF EVERYTHING SHE SAW. OF THE GHOSTS, OF THE MAGIC SHE'D GROWN UP ADORING. SHE SPENT THE REST OF HER STAY WITH HER GRANDMOTHER CONFINED TO HER ROOM, REFUSING TO OPEN HER EYES OR ACKNOWLEDGE ANYTHING AROUND HER
AFTER HARPER RETURNED TO IRELAND, SHE NEVER WENT BACK TO FENRIRS WOOD, AND NEVER SAW HER GRANDMOTHER AGAIN
HARPER DIDN'T ATTEND HER GRANDMOTHER'S FUNERAL
AT THE AGE OF 18, HARPER LEFT HOME. HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER MOTHER HAD FALLEN APART OVER THE YEARS AS HARPER'S GIFT TO SEE GHOSTS AND CONNECTION TO MAGIC GREW STRONGER. HARPER HAD CONFIDED IN HER MOTHER HER FEARS, TO WHICH HER MOTHER DISMISSED HER
HARPER THEN SPENT MUCH OF HER TIME TRAVELLING IN AN OLD PICK UP TRUCK THAT SHE STILL DRIVES TODAY, TRAVELLING ALL OVER IRELAND, AND THEN EVENTUALLY MOVING TO ENGLAND WHEN SHE TURNED 25 AND HAD SAVED ENOUGH MONEY TO GET AWAY
HARPER SPENT 4 YEARS MOVING AROUND ENGLAND, TAKING UP ODD JOBS TO GET BUY, BUSKING ON THE STREETS AND MOSTLY SLEEPING IN HER TRUCK. SHE LOVED THE WAY OF LIFE BUT COULDN'T SHAKE THE FEELING OF BEING PULLED TOWARDS FENRIRS WOOD
HARPER ARRIVED IN TOWN AROUND TWO WEEKS BEFORE EASTER

Character Info
Name: William McAllister
Gender: Male
Age: 28 (in 1866)
Sexuality: Homosexual
Race/Nationality: White. Born in Ireland & immigrated to America in 1854
Occupation: Outlaw (Pirate)
Description:
William McAllister is a tall, lean man with long blonde hair that he usually wears half up in a bun. He has light blue eyes and fair skin. He stands at about 6 feet tall and is roughly 160 pounds. He has broad shoulders and a small waist. His voice is typically described as soft and velvety, with a thick Irish accent that brings a deep huskiness to it.
Tumblr media
He typically wears a loose-fitted white blouse, unbuttoned further down than necessary to show his chest. He wears a lot of gold jewelry, specifically the gold and blue amulet around his neck that he got from his father as a boy. He also has a gold tooth after losing one of his canines in a fight.
Tumblr media
He has feminine features despite his bold eyebrows and goatee he keeps unshaven on his chin. He has defined lips and long eyelashes, with light freckles across his cheeks.
He’s fantastic at swordsmanship, and is decent with firearms; particularly handguns. He isn’t great with rifles as he has a hard time aiming at a far away target. Give him a bow and arrow however, and he’s an excellent shot!
He’s typically known to be flirtatious and outgoing. He’s talkative and boisterous; and easily distracted. He’s polite, but has a hard time getting along with a lot of people; as they often mistake his friendly manner as disrespectful or overzealous. He’s touchy and doesn’t understand personal space. People quickly become annoyed by him, and he often finds himself having a hard time communicating with most people.
Tumblr media
He’s a hopeless romantic at heart, but he won’t tell you that. He expresses his desire for intimacy through sexuality, which often causes more harm than good to his self esteem. Despite his overconfident demeanor, he’s actually quite apprehensive and has a deep routed fear of rejection and abandonment.
He’s easily frustrated & quick to anger, and he can get overwhelmed by things faster than others; however he excels as a leader and remains calm under pressure.

𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝚂𝙴𝙲𝚁𝙴𝚃 , it was kept tucked away in the breast pocket of his coat and other times under a loose floorboard, a small leather bound black notebook which contained every name of every person the dormer family had made some unsavory dealing with and he's been debating on sharing some of those findings if his debt cannot be remedied but it'll cost him. integrity isn't so easily gained and there are a few other names he's gathered from working under politician montgomerey astor.
𝙷𝙸𝙶𝙷 𝚂𝙾𝙲𝙸𝙴𝚃𝚈 , the cadwalader law firm is one of the oldest in new york, and therefore came with a sense of security and protection. trust. he wants to convey the exact same ideal but it's not so easy. everyone jonathan has ever crossed paths with in new york had been seen as an opportunity, especially those of higher status — that's what this is, a chance to make his way in the world away from the shadows of his past.
𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝚁𝚈 , this is what love was like, or so jonathan had assumed — fighting. constant yelling and shouting that would burn the cheeks crimson with metaphorical steam coming out the ears. over nothing and over everything, but it often came in the form of his father stumbling through the door, slurred speech and empty pockets. chicago was not the place promised, the american dream nothing more than lies standing on the back of a crumbling marriage. it was divorce that caused his mother to return to her home country, the very scandal attached to her name far too much for her to bear, the quinn curse, she'd claim. no quinn could keep a marriage. jonathan had asked about it once, ' generational ' she'd claim, someone in the family long ago wronged the wrong person. and his father? he remained. the drunk on the corner. perhaps the embodiment of the quinn curse jonathan concluded after three weeks of staying with his father. somehow england was worse, it's where his mother met clyde drake. a pompous man who had everything jonathan's father did not, money in his pocket and not a drop of alcohol on his breath. and his father was dead, his mother claimed. an alleged widow who married this mister drake, a man who despised jonathan, even more so once he had two children of his own. he made sure jonnathan knew, when every penny was stripped from his inheritance, or what little one his mother had secured for him. new york wasn't much better, a far cry from the promises, a perfectly packaged lie with a shiny red ribbon, but the only place he could secure an education cheaper than europe offered. maybe not cheap enough when the coins in his pocket didn't even stir up a melodious jingle they were so few — but a dormer's offer, the next allure. the last of his coins tossed among the poker chips and golden pocket watch. luck of the irish, surely he'd claim but the quinn's were cursed and as he watched greedy hands stretch across the table collecting all that was left, someone took pity. the late mister dormer who slipped him the left behind pocket watch and a deal. wealth came in the form of compromised morals and a promise that this connection with law and politicians would pay off for the dormer family but did that deal die with the late mister dormer?
𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙸𝙼𝙿𝚁𝙴𝚂𝚂𝙸𝙾𝙽 , how society views jonathan . . . he wishes to be as every lawyer had been viewed in the past and future. never seen as the most earnest people, but holding an esteemed profession none the less. jonathan has always leaned on his charismatic nature to fight the natural inclination people have around a questionable deal or dodgy situation and he's currently seen as the young man with an ill-fitting suit jacket following around politician montgomerey pastor. some have a lesser view, hanging around the dormers gambling and walking around late at night.
𝙲𝙾𝙽𝙽𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽𝚂 , the  gamble  he  lost  :  maybe  it  was  too  good  to  turn  down  ,  a  gamble  that  he  was  too  confident  about  and  put  all  his  savings  into  ,  it  never  worked  out  for  him  before  but  something  told  him  it  would  this  time   .   the  curse   :  this  time  it  comes  in  the  form  of  dark  fluttering  lashes  and  a  smile  ,  the  one  he  spends  money  he  doesn't  have  to  impress   .    little  black  book  :  those  in  the  book  ,  who  have  made  deals  with  the  dormer  family  and  other  questionable  individuals  this  one  individual  specifically  who  finds  said  book   .

"Oliver Boy! It's the same militia
Oliver Boy! Just the clothes are different
Oliver Boy! It's the same old story
Where there's blood there's death not glory
Oliver Boy! We're all someone's sons
All of our boys! Just put down the guns
Oliver Boy! You're dead but listen
You were wrong but we're no different"
- Oliver Boy [All Of Our Boys] written and performed by Flogging Molly
Lyrics are written by Flogging Molly frontman, Dublin-born Dave King, and references Oliver Cromwell and the English occupation of Ireland and the attempted genocide of the Irish people, drawing comparisons to the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. The song opens and ends with the lyrics "Now the sun shines on this page I write, though it's raining hard in Palestine", a metaphor for the current peace between independent Ireland and the British Empire, and the brutal conflict ongoing in Palestine.

⟨ bill hader. demi-man. he/they. forty-five. ⟩  We just saw finley ‘finn’ blythe entering the broadcasting house. I heard through the grapevine that they are radio show host. Although they are [ with the media ], they can sometimes be hostile, stubborn, or even aloof but I’ve also heard some people say that they were curious, firm in their beliefs and quite perceptive.
full name:  finley blyth enickname(s):  finn, finny ( thanks to his brother ), blythe name meaning:  finley: fair-haired hero, courageous one. blythe: cheerful age:  fourty-five date of birth:  september 9th star sign:  virgo place of birth: doolin, ireland current location: london gender:  demi-man pronouns:  he/they sexual orientation:  homosexual religion:  agnostic occupation: radio show host, conspiracist, writer family:  riordan blythe ( father ), talulla cagney-blythe ( mother ), devlin blythe ( brother ), maeve blythe ( daughter ) education level: you would not believe this, but he does have a journalism degree, english literature degree living arrangements:  small flat with his daughter financial status:  could be better spoken languages:  english, some irish ( re: his mother )
talulla kept the family together when her husband was away at his cabin, being ‘away’ meant he was on the line for writing the next great novel. he was famous amongst fellow conspiracist about aliens, the government, and every odditie in between. his words were spoken with passion and wit and it was hard to be close to him if you didn’t understand. on the outside it shouldn’t have worked, talulla and riordan, but they loved each other deeply even if one parent had their head in the clouds and the other had both feet planted on the ground.
they used to say that finley was the cost of having a second child, devlin was the older brother and was the golden boy, or so they used to say. he did everything right and was going to be a doctor someday. he wanted to go into the medical field like his mother who was a nurse, he believed in science and factual proof. sometimes that would lead to the kind of arguments with his father where no one spoke to each other for a couple of days.
but where they grew up everyone knew everyone – people loved tallula but could never quite stomach riordan who was english, riordan who corrupted tallula, riordan who often embarrassed his entire family with his questions, his theories.
by the time that finn could speak he was already a little pariah. someone had to stick up for those that weren’t brave enough to. finn used to be loud enough to get in trouble, but at least he stood up for something. often times, it was because he was defending his father. he wondered why that was so hard for devlin to do.
being gay was a fucking walk in the park in comparison to who his dad was and the kind of books he wrote about. he wouldn’t begin to understand his father’s loneliness until much later.
he’s in his second year of university when his father dies. ,
after his dad dies, he sits in the shadows and eventually gets his degrees, he writes for the media but it’s all bullshit. but things change after his mother decides to finally move house into something smaller, his dad used to keep clips of things he was passionate about, it’s then that fin hears about the secret underbelly of london. and then, he finally has a purpose again.
he knows that his father wasn’t the crazy old man that people called him, in the same way that they say that finley is crazy. they know that they’re not – if only people would listen.
when he’s thirty-five him and his best friend hook up, on a whim, finley thought that he was past his identity crisis but that night solidifies what he already knew. the kicker with consequences is that it eventually bites them in the ass, and he ends up having a daughter with his best friend. it worked out for them, both gay, but wanting children. he swore when she was born that she would be raised differently than how he grew up. bullies will always be bullies but finley would always protect his child in the way that his parents didn’t.
bonus stuff:
his brother did end up becoming a doctor, even becoming maeve’s doctor. they’re very cordial with each other and maeve is very protective of her dad so there’s always a going to be a bit of a riff between the family. they keep it together for their mother’s sake.
finley has a ‘small’ radio show that people can tune into about what he thinks is going on with their government etc etc etc, he does have a loyal following, but it also gets brought up a lot when it’s turn to get ridiculed again asodkfjaos hes simply tired !!!
believes in aliens but hopes that the aliens believe in themselves <3 ( maeve cosigns this message as well )
been writing a book for a while now, it’s his second baby, but whomst knows if it will ever see the light of day
he’s always fair game but if you talk about his kid… well i pity the person !!
