So...what do we think of the way lab rats handled Taylor's disability? Personally, I think they did a decent job narratively. They steered away from "this is a sci-fi type of show so we can just 'fix' the disability". The visor Douglas made for her basically functions like a cane would, except its more compact and on her face, but all it does is tell her when an obstacle is in front of her...like a cane would. She's still blind. That doesn't go away. Taylor goes on missions again as the hero she is, even with her disability. She's disabled and she can go on missions.
I say narratively because there were a few comments about "a newbie, a quitter and a blind girl!" and with how Leo wanted the doctors to "fix it", but as far as Leo's comments go, he mostly felt guilty about his actions altering her way of life forever, which it did.
Seriously, what do we think? I'm not physically disabled myself, but I'm taking a class where we talk about this stuff and I was reminded of this Taylor plotline recently. I've been thinking about this all day.

i love when comic books have to come up with a way that the superhero with the perfect power to solve this situation cant solve it. its always either some of the most interesting character choices that give you a deep look into how those characters function or it is the most asinine bullshit ever and there is no middle ground

I did some reading in the notes and a lot of people don’t understand the difference in fighting censorship and actually wanting to avoid triggering someone. And you say you’re “fighting back” against censorship but you’re really only…promoting it.
And when I say trigger I mean legitimately being triggered, not just squicked or uncomfortable.
You’re trying to beat the tagging system. For what purpose? The tagging system sucks for ALL tags. Maybe if you didn’t grow up on tumblr you don’t know how good it used to be, but why why why would you care more about everyone seeing your posts than actually, literally triggering trauma in someone?
Filter the content, filter the words. No it doesn’t work perfectly, but it works. It’s also about choosing which posts to see. I have words filtered that I only open the post to read from someone I trust.
I have a severe trigger to bats. I have it filtered by tag and content because most people don’t think it’s a trigger. So I miss a shit ton of posts? Especially about Batman? Yeah. Would I rather miss them than get triggered? YEAH.
You do know you don’t have to see every post on your dash, right? So don’t force others to. Have some fucking decency and compassion.
Also. I don’t how many times people need to read these words but: TUMBLR IS NOT BASED ON AN ALGORITHM.
This is why you cultivate your dash and make it into shit you like. Things you don’t like? Can be tagged properly and hopefully avoided.
“But it doesn’t filter words from posts” no. It filters TAGS. Filter content by…filtering content. It’s right there. Immediately below filtering words. And seriously, if you’re new or newish to tumblr, ASK SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAS BEEN HERE FOR A WHILE. We will explain to you. Whether you choose to listen or assume you know better is up to you.
Basically, be considerate of others. I know in this current society, that’s nearly impossible for a lot of people, but compassion is sexy.
Tumblr media
What the fuck is this??????????
Folks: you CANNOT censor trigger tags. When you block a tag, it doesn't block other "spellings" of it. Writing it as "r@pe" or "r4p3" means that someone who has "tw rape" as a blocked tag will still see that post because you didn't wanna say the word rape. You are hurting people. Do not censor words, because people do not have those filtered out.
And honestly if you can't even write the word rape to protect other people then you probably aren't old/mature enough to be on this website.

By the way, you can improve your executive function. You can literally build it like a muscle.
Yes, even if you're neurodivergent. I don't have ADHD, but it is allegedly a thing with ADHD as well. And I am autistic, and after a bunch of nerve damage (severe enough that I was basically housebound for 6 months), I had to completely rebuild my ability to get my brain to Do Things from what felt like nearly scratch.
This is specifically from ADDitude magazine, so written specifically for ADHD (and while focused in large part on kids, also definitely includes adults and adult activities):
Here's a link on this for autism (though as an editor wow did that title need an editor lol):
Resources on this aren't great because they're mainly aimed at neurotypical therapists or parents of neurdivergent children. There's worksheets you can do that help a lot too or thought work you can do to sort of build the neuro-infrastructure for tasks.
But a lot of the stuff is just like. fun. Pulling from both the first article and my own experience:
Play games or video games where you have to make a lot of decisions. Literally go make a ton of picrews or do online dress-up dolls if you like. It helped me.
Art, especially forms of art that require patience, planning ahead, or in contrast improvisation
Listening to longform storytelling without visuals, e.g. just listening regularly to audiobooks or narrative podcasts, etc.
Meditation
Martial arts
Sports in general
Board games like chess or Catan (I actually found a big list of what board games are good for building what executive functioning skills here)
Woodworking
Cooking
If you're bad at time management play games or video games with a bunch of timers
Things can be easier. You might always have a disability around this (I certainly always will), but it can be easier. You do not have to be this stuck forever.
