In 2021, Pope Francis conceded that the church had failed to put the needs of victims first in what was considered to be one of his strongest condemnations of child sexual abuse in the Catholic church to date.

"There is, unfortunately, a considerable number," he said during his weekly audience at the Vatican. "I would like to express to the victims my sadness and pain for the trauma they suffered. It is also my shame, our shame, for the incapacity of the church for too long to put them at the center of its concerns."

An independent inquiry, France's first major reckoning with clerical child sexual abuse, found that an estimated 216,000 children were victims. In wake of the damning findings, Hans Zollner, a German priest and close advisor to Pope Francis, urged Italian bishops to "find the courage to investigate" clerical child abuse.

The issue has been mostly buried in Italy, and at an episcopal conference, the speech by Pope Francis was criticized by abuse victims for failing to strike the tone of taking strong action against pedophile priests. In January 2019, a UN commission condemned Italy for being complicit in protecting pedophile priests from criminal charges.

"We want an inquiry here too, but the pope has never asked for one," said Francesco Zanardi, who set up Rete l'Abuso, Italy's only network of clerical abuse victims. "The numbers in France are frightening but here we could have up to 1 million victims. Simply hearing 'I'm sorry' is laughable."

In 2021, the first clergy sexual abuse trial to be heard by the pope's criminal court took place, where the Vatican tribunal absolved Reverend Gabriele Martinelli. In 2017 former altar boys went public with allegations of misconduct by Martinelli and a cover-up by the seminary superiors. The priest was acquitted by the three-judge panel of some charges and ruled others could not be punished. The former rector of the seminary, Reverend Enrico Radice, was similarly absolved.

Not a quote but an action. The Australian soprano Nellie Melba was notorius for her ruthlessness and coldness. Performing with her in La Bohème Caruso, as a joke, pressed a hot sausage into her hand that he'd hidden in his pocket as he sang "Che gelida manina, se la lasci riscaldar."("What a cold little hand, let me warm it"). She had considered Caruso coarse and uncultivated and this, of course, only confirmed that ... Melba, however, was impressed with Caruso's voice and wrote in her autobiography (Melodies and Memories): "As a voice - pure and simple - his was the most wonderful tenor I ever heard."

Whatever his own emotions were, his audience was invariably overwhelmed. I asked him to explain the secret of this power. He said, "I suffer so much in this life, Doro. Minori stranieri stuprano e rapinano a Genova: Stato vuole processare 15 italiani che hanno assaltato il centro accoglienza

L’ennesimo episodio di violenza tra ragazzini che coinvolge minori non accompagnati a Genova si consuma davanti al frequentatissimo stabilimento balneare San Nazaro. Siamo in corso Italia, promenade di Genova, e sono le 12 quando un giovane egiziano di 17 anni, arrivato a Genova con lo status di rifugiato e ospitato in una comunità di Castelletto, che si trova al mare con alcuni connazionali, aggredisce una ragazzina di 13 anni che era in spiaggia con le amiche. La spinge contro un muretto e la bacia con forza sulla bocca. La tredicenne non vuole. Urla, chiede aiuto.

Davanti allo stabilimento si scatena il parapiglia. Intervengono alcuni bagnanti e un educatore che accompagna il gruppo di profughi. La ragazzina viene soccorsa e il suo aggressore bloccato. Non senza qualche difficoltà dal momento che tenta pure di fuggire. Sul posto arrivano i carabinieri del nucleo radiomobile, chiamati dallo stesso educatore. Che non può certamente non denunciare un episodio così grave. Però la sua scelta di chiamare i carabinieri scatena la rabbia del giovane egiziano e dei suoi amici che fanno scattare nei confronti dell’insegnante una serie di minacce di morte.

In Sardegna e Sicilia si vota in 167 comuni, i confronti più interessanti nelle città di Catania, Ragusa, Trapani e Siracusa

In Sardegna e Sicilia si vota in 167 comuni, i confronti più interessanti nelle città di Catania, Ragusa, Trapani e Siracusa Si chiudono le sfide in 41 comuni. Si aprono invece in Sicilia e Sardegna. Il voto di domenica e lunedì, 28 e 29 maggio dalle 7 alle 23 e il giorno dopo dalle 7 alle 15 è un crocevia di urne concentrate su sfide locali, ma che se uniamo i puntini, possono mostrare un profilo nazionale. Occhi puntati dunque sui ballottaggi in 41 comuni, con le sfide più importanti ad Ancona, unico capoluogo di regione, Pisa, Brindisi, Massa e Siena, Terni, Vicenza. Nel capoluogo marchigiano, Il centrodestra ha scommesso fin dall'inizio sul ribaltone in città. Al primo turno il candidato Daniele Silvetti non ci è andato troppo lontano incassando il 45% dei voti e staccando di quattro punti la candidata avversaria, l'assessora uscente Ida Simonella che si è fermata al 41,3%. A Pisa il sindaco uscente Michele Conti, sostenuto dal centrodestra e da tre liste civiche, sfida Paolo Martinelli, candidato di centrosinistra e Movimento cinque stelle. Al primo turno Conti ha sfiorato la vittoria fermandosi al 49,96% mentre il suo sfidante ha ottenuto il 41,1%. A Siena la sfida è tra due donne: al primo turno Nicoletta Fabio del centrodestra ha ottenuto il 30,5% e Anna Ferretti, di centrosinistra il 28,8%. Decisivo sarà il voto delle liste civiche, la più importante ha ottenuto oltre il 22%. E le due candidate non hanno dato vita a nessun apparentamento. Nelle due isole maggiori intanto, il voto è per il primo turno. I comuni più importanti, sopra i 15 mila abitanti, che vanno al voto sono quasi tutti in Sicilia. Lì Sono 15 infatti le sfide che superano questa soglia, con le battaglie più importanti sicuramente a Catania, Ragusa, Trapani e Siracusa. Nel capoluogo etneo, guidato da un commissario, si affrontano 7 candidati: il centrodestra unito a sostegno di Enrico Tarantino, Mentre PD e m5s hanno unito le forze a sostegno di Maurizio Caserta. Più contenuta, rispetto alla Sicilia, la tornata elettorale in Sardegna, dove i Comuni che andranno a votare sono 39. Soltanto due di questi superano i 15mila abitanti. This sucks, on many levels. The characters are obnoxious, one-dimensional caricatures - especially Father Marco, whom I, in a rare display of wit, took to calling Marco-Sue as he kept being presented as the perfectest person ever, literally healing the blind and giving big important speeches full of Christian jingoism and horribly butchered German - the effects and CGI mattes are actually painful to look at, and the whole thing is just incredibly dull. I am told the historical event this was based on must've been quite impressive. This is not.

Also, what's with the whole "turning <important church> into a mosque" thing? Was that, like, A Thing, or is it just that the screenwriter thought of the phrase and was so impressed with themself that they put it into the script, like, three times?

In the staterooms, Baroque stucco ceilings with the opulent neo-Rococo interior, the original furnishings, precious silk hangings and the refined parquet floors by Michael Thonet's form a harmonious whole and offer insights into past epochs. Construction of the Liechtenstein City Palace began in 1691 on the instruction of Dominik Andreas Graf Kaunitz to designs by Enrico Zuccalli. In 1694, Prince Johann Adam Andreas I. of Liechtenstein had the construction completed by Domenico Martinelli, who created the first monumental Baroque portal in Vienna on the front facing Bankgasse. Prince Alois II. von Liechtenstein had the palace remodeled in the style of the "Second Rococo" between 1836 and 1847.

Beniamino Gigli was the foremost Italian tenor of the 1920s through the 1940s, possessed of a smooth, lush voice with a lyric sweetness often described as "honeyed." He became a Metropolitan Opera star, singing 28 roles there, and was a legitimate heir to the tenor Enrico Caruso, who had died at the beginning of the 1920s. No one person could fill Caruso's shoes, but it was widely conceded that Gigli inherited his lyrical and romantic parts, while Giovanni Martinelli took over the more heroic roles. Gigli was also one of the most-beloved performers of Italian song, with a special gift for the traditional Neapolitan repertoire. His singing was heavily mannered by modern standards, characterized by sobs, catches, and portamenti, but it had an inherent beauty and sincerity that are still easy to appreciate. Although an even more stylized actor than singer, Gigli had a successful film career, appearing in almost 20 films.Gigli began his singing career as a child, performing for treats and coins at a local café. At age 7, he entered the choir of Recanati Cathedral, where his father was Sacristan. When he was 15 and still a boy soprano, he was recruited to sing the heroine in an operetta in the nearby city of Macerata; he did the production in drag! When he was 17, he moved to Rome to live with his brother, a student of sculpture; the two led a bohemian existence, frequently cold and hungry, until Gigli was offered a position as a servant in a wealthy household. There he was provided with room and board and given afternoons off to practice or to take lessons with a local teacher, Agnese Bonucci, who offered to teach him at no cost.During World War I, a music-loving colonel saw to it that he was posted to a non-combat position in Rome and also encouraged him to audition at the famous Academia di Santa Cecilia, where his evident musical talent led them to waive the normally required piano examination. He studied there for two years, and upon graduation won the famous Parma vocal competition. On the strength of that, he was offered roles at various small opera houses and made his official opera debut as Enzo in La Gioconda at Rovigo in the fall of 1914. By December 1916, he made his Rome Opera debut as Faust in Boito's Mefistofele. When the war was over, the recording company HMV set up a studio in Milan, and it was there that Gigli began his extensive recording career. In 1918, he made his La Scala debut also as Boito's Faust in a performance conducted by Toscanini. The next year, he made his first appearance in the Americas as Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Teatro Colon. His Met debut followed in November 1920, also as Faust, and he sang there every season until 1932.His Covent Garden debut was not until 1930, as Andrea Chénier. After World War II, which he mostly spent in Italy, he largely restricted his singing to concert performances; his last public appearance was in May 1955, at a concert in Washington, D.C., ending a professional career of 41 years.Gigli was one of the first singers to make complete opera recordings, including a particularly fine Andrea Chénier (EMI) and Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci released as a set on Nimbus. Among his solo CDs, a two-disc set on Pearl (Gemm) captures him in his youthful prime.

O edifício art decó Germanie Burchard foi projetado por Enrico Brand e está localizado na Avenida Cásper Libero, 59. Sua construção data da década de 30. O prédio recebe o nome da condessa brasileira homônima, que vivia em Paris. Neste, que foi o primeiro flat da cidade, a família Burchard habitava na cobertura de 330 m², que hoje tem vista para o Martinelli e o Banespa. A inovação, o flat, funcionou porque os fazendeiros que vinham para São Paulo a negócios não queriam mais gastar com a manutenção de casarões caríssimos e gostaram de opção mais em conta sem perder o luxo. Luxo e glamour Corta para a década de 50, quando foi reformado por Vladimir Vensann e Lucian Korngold para abrigar o Hotel Alvear, que foi um dos mais luxuosos de São Paulo. Depois foi a vez do Hotel Marian Palace, até que foi vendido por inteiro no começo deste século. Coube ao arquiteto Pierre Mermelstein transformar as suítes de hotel em pequenos apartamentos residenciais. O arquiteto manteve a maioria dos detalhes originais do prédio, em estilo retrofit, ou seja, sem descaracterizar a historia e a essência do prédio. Ele realmente deve ter apreciado o resultado: Pierre Mermelstein mantém seu escritório na célebre cobertura do Edifício Germaine Burchard. E mais: gosta de acompanhar os visitantes contando toda a história do prédio e o conceito de seu retrofit. Vale a visita! Se você encontrar com Pierre por lá, a aula de história e urbanismo está garantida. Curiosidade: o Germanie Burchard ganhou o prêmio de Edifício mais bonito de São Paulo em 1941-1942. This years’ host will be Amadeus (who choose the songs taking part into this Sanremo), a TV and radio host. He will be accompanied by 10 female co-hosts, all coming from TV, songs, sport and information fields: Francesca Sofia Novello, Laura Chimenti, Antonella Clerici, Diletta Leotta, Emma D'Aquino, Sabrina Salerno, Alketa Vejsiu, Mara Venier, Georgina Rodriguez, Rula Jebreal. They will appear on few nights (or just one) each. The radio and TV host Fiorello will be present all the 5 nights, same as the famous singer Tiziano Ferro. They will appear on stage randomly to entertain and sing, maybe also with other guests. For the 70° anniversary of the competition, a 300 meters red carpet has been held in Sanremo to connect the roads nearby to the Ariston theater. The names of the past 69 editions’ winners are written on the red carpet and they may stay there also after the end of the competition (not sure though - take a look at the pics here). An outside stage, called Nutella stage, has been build in the streets of Sanremo. Guests and hosts will randomly go there as well to cheer the crowd.

How it works 

Differently from last year, this year the young/newbie section is back. So there will be 24 singers in the Campioni (champs) section and 8 in the Giovani (young/newbies) section. The winner of the competition of the Campioni section will represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest: if he/she/them won’t accept, the choice will be another artist, usually the 2nd classified. Another difference with the past edition is that the “Duets night” will take place on the 3rd night. The Campioni’s singers will perform (with another Italian or foreign artist) a song from a past Sanremo edition. This special evening will be called Sanremo 70. Differently from the past, the rank at the end of the 3rd night, will change also the rank after the 2 first nights (votes will be added to the general rank).

Day 1 - co-hosts: Rula Jebreal, Diletta Leotta. Prob. guests: Fiorello, Tiziano Ferro. “Gli anni più belli” actors, Emma Marrone (will sing too), Gessica Notaro and Antonio Maggio, Al Bano & Romina Power. We’ll hear 12 Campioni’s songs (in order of performance: Irene Grandi, Marco Masini, Rita Pavone, Achille Lauro, Diodato, Le Vibrazioni, Anastasio, Elodie, Bugo e Morgan, Alberto Urso, Riki, Raphael Gualazzi) and 4 Giovani’s (Eugenio in via di Gioia, Fadi, Leo Gassman and Tecla Insolia). 2 songs of the Giovani will be excluded after two different 1 vs 1 contests (Eugenio in Via di Gioia VS Tecla Insolia || Fadi VS Leo Gassmann). The two winning songs (one for each contest) will pass to the 4th night. We’ll have a first rank of the 12 Campioni who performed tonight.

Day 2 - co-hosts: Emma D’Aquino, Laura Chimenti, Sabrina Salerno. Prob. guests: Fiorello, Tiziano Ferro. Zucchero, Ricchi e Poveri, Gigi D’Alessio, Massimo Ranieri, Paolo Palumbo, Novak Djokovic and his wife. The remaining 12 Campioni’s (in order of performance: Piero Pelù, Elettra Lamborghini, Enrico Nigiotti, Levante, Pinguini Tattici Nucleari, Tosca, Francesco Gabbani, Paolo Jannacci, Rancore, Junior Cally, Giordana Angi, Michele Zarrillo) and 4 Giovani’s songs (Fasma, Matteo Faustini, Martinelli & Lula, Marco Sentieri) will be performed tonight. 2 songs of the Giovani’s will be excluded after two different 1 vs 1 contests (Martinelli & Lula VS Fasma || Marco Sentieri VS Matteo Faustini). The two winning songs (one for each contest) will pass to the 4th night. "Le Iene presentano: Inside" questa sera in prima serata su Italia 1. Domani, domenica 16 aprile, in prime-time su Italia 1, il quinto appuntamento stagionale con “Le Iene presentano: Inside” è “L’anima nera della Chiesa”. L’inchiesta di Gaetano Pecoraro e Riccardo Festinese narra di scandali finanziari, morti sospette e rapimenti, storture difficilmente conciliabili con la dottrina della Chiesa Cattolica, con un approfondimento particolare sui peccati che hanno provocato uno degli scandali più profondi che hanno investito la cristianità negli ultimi anni e che hanno dato luogo al primo processo della storia per i presunti abusi sessuali, avvenuti all’interno delle mura Vaticane, tra i chierichetti del Papa. Sul banco degli imputati, nel 2019, con un rinvio a giudizio, erano finiti un seminarista diventato poi sacerdote, Don Gabriele Martinelli e un monsignore, Don Enrico Radice, rettore del preseminario all’epoca dei fatti. Le accuse erano pesantissime: violenze sessuali, abusi, favoreggiamenti, tutti avvenuti nel preseminario San Pio X, l’istituto frequentato da giovanissimi il cui scopo è orientare le vocazioni di chi lo frequenta. Al primo fu imputato di aver compiuto le presunte violenze, al secondo di averle coperte. La trasmissione di Italia 1 ha cominciato a raccontare la terribile e delicata vicenda il 12 novembre 2017, ponendo il primo tassello di questa inchiesta grazie alla sconvolgente testimonianza di Kamil Jarzembowski, il ragazzo che per primo denunciò pubblicamente, dando così via a un tam-tam mediatico mondiale e a due procedimenti giudiziari non ancora del tutto conclusi. Kamil aveva deciso di raccontare alle telecamere de Le Iene la propria versione, sostenendo di essere stato testimone oculare di violenze sessuali che il suo compagno di stanza, Marco (nome di fantasia, ndr.) da ragazzino, avrebbe subìto. Ad aggiungersi al coro accusatorio arrivò anche la testimonianza di Marco stesso che, esattamente come Kamil, aveva puntato il dito contro il seminarista Martinelli. Poi ci fu anche quella di Lucio (nome di fantasia, ndr.), infine quella di Carlo (nome di fantasia, ndr.): le accuse erano sempre le stesse e tutte nei confronti di Don Gabriele Martinelli e di Don Enrico Radice. Nella puntata di stasera Gaetano Pecoraro riavvolge il nastro e ripercorre l’intera vicenda mostrando elementi nuovi e mai emersi fino a oggi.
