Introducing my take on the Nightmare of this Superhero AU. This story and Nightmare’s design(s) are highly inspired by Spiderman villains, Resident Evil, and The Last of Us! Thanks to @thenocturnenarrator for helping me with this! Superhero AU belongs to @thelunarsystemwrites!

This turned out so much more gruesome and complex than I expected, so VISUAL AND DESCRIPTIVE CW for the following;

Lab Experimentation (Might be considered child experimentation), Body Horror involving mushrooms growing out of the body, Gore, Blood, Insects, Vomiting, and potentially heavy subjects that not all viewers may like.

Backstory

Meet Nightmare “Nyx” Yggdrasil, a 12-13 year old who was kidnapped and experimented on alongside his brother Dream. At the time, he was only able to talk to plants and comprehend how they felt, but that was going to change very soon. The scientists wanted to enhance the powers of the soul’s magic, creating a serum that could do so but was incapable of working on Nightmare’s current state. His “soul” couldn’t be classified as one, seeing as it was more of a purple fireball of pure negative energy, so they needed a way to make it something tangible and experimental. They eventually gain the idea to have the brothers eat a Gold Apple from their home world so their “souls” can merge with the apples and therefore be alterable. While Dream’s process goes fine, Nightmare’s Apple obviously rots, but he’s still forced to eat it, and soon after so he’s injected with the enhancing serum. This not only enhances his ability to talk to plants to being able to control them and connect with them on a higher level, but it enhances the magic and power of the Black Apple, causing black goop to begin tearing out of Nightmare’s body. To prevent his body from literally ripping itself apart from the inside, Nightmare controls the plants around him to seal himself away into a large, cocoon-like growth. A few months pass after Dream escapes the lab with CORE FRISK, and the cocoon breaks open.

The fungi and other plant life had merged with his body. Nightmare was still mostly mentally there, but the cordyceps merging with most of his body was taking tolls on his brain and making him go a little crazy, not to mention the pent up vengeance and wrath he was feeling. Naturally, he slaughtered everyone in the laboratory and fled to the same place Dream and various other superheroes found themselves in. Craving any sort of comfort and affection, he forced together a team of supervillains including Dust, Horror, Killer, and maybe other willing characters. He’s convinced everyone including himself that he assembled the group for personal revenges on the world and to show everyone that they’ll be more than just tools, as well as general instinct telling him to feed off people’s suffering and all that.

But deep down, it’s just because he doesn’t want to be alone with nothing. Never again after all of the suffering he felt growing up in the laboratory…

Spore Infiltration (He uncontrollably gives off spores every time he exhales as well as from his body’s fungi. Inhaling these spores can cause headaches and nausea, but severe cases can result in brainwashing, in which a host will become a mindless drone forced to take commands from Nightmare)

If a skeleton is spore-infested, they must wash out their skeletal system and clear all spores before the spores begin growing inside of the body and through the eye sockets and bones. The fungi that grow from these spores feed off a person’s negative energy and soul magic, slowly draining them and turning them into an emotionless husk, eventually killing them and leaving behind a visceral mess of flesh and flora. Humans and non-skeletal Monsters require more advanced surgical procedures to remove spores and fungi, and have far lower chances of surviving the infection.

Abilities

Insect Attraction (The foul stench that Nightmare gives off usually attracts flies, maggots, worms, caterpillars, ETC to feed on and live in parts of his body. This also means it’s not just chunks of moss and goop he’s throwing up…)

Nauseation and Headaches (Nightmare smells like rotting flesh and mushrooms, and the scent is very potent)

Intimidation (He’s scary!)

Weaknesses

Extreme Flammability/Fire

Explosives (He’s weak to those and generally dislikes the loud noises)

Light/Blaster Magic

Herbicides/Plant-Toxic Chemicals

Low Temperatures/Cold Climates

Abandonment (General Fear/Phobia)

Other Information

Alignment is Chaotic Neutral that eventually becomes Chaotic Evil

He's asexual and biromantic

One drastic difference involving this Nightmare from the original personality-wise is that Passive Nightmare is still in-tact. He's not dead in this AU, he's just been driven a little mad by vengeance and his own fungus. The apple he had consumed WASN'T the one that was possessed by the human that killed Nim; It was a Gold Apple he turned rotten, meaning he'd have more of his conscious than the main universe's Nightmare

Furthermore, he's also more of a liar and willing to bend the truth, such as when he lies to himself and others about the true reasons as to why he formed a team

Nightmare doesn’t leave his team to fight alone; he comes along with them every chance he gets to, even if it seems like a bad idea towards the others

When Nightmare realizes who Dream is, he’s hellbent on killing him and everyone that he has bonds and friendships with. He believes Dream had abandoned him and wishes to exact the same suffering he had to go through. It’s that Spiderverse-Miles-And-Spot “They turned you into a lovable hero, but I was turned into THIS.” dynamic we all know and love. Nightmare’s also very envious of his brother due to the fact he got to live a better, more fulfilling life than he did

Buggies! :D I love bugs. Spiders are one of my favorite animals(not counted as bugs but shhh)

Drain: Haha he would, accidentally, maybe mess with you about it? Like he would tell you about AUs where they were all bugs. He just wants to show that it could be worse, but he might just make it worse for you -w-'. He doesn't really understand why you would be afraid of bugs and stuff; wouldn't judge you or anything though! Guess that's just something that you do? He'll handle the bugs around the house, just try to remind him about your fear sometimes or he would forget and get excited to show you off a pretty colorful buggy.

Glitchy: Whaaattt??? How could you be afraid of bugs? Spiders, yeah, he got that, but all bugs? :( he doesn't understand it! He might make it worse by trying to show you cute ones. After a while, he would realize that he wasn't helping and would feel bad for bugging you… hehe bugging. Ah! Wait, he's sorry! Please don't hate him ;-;

Fairy: Okay, he doesn't get being afraid of something so small, but he'll handle all of the bugs that they see while they're in a house/building. Otherwise he'll leave them alone, no need to kill a bug if they're outside. It really depends on how bad your phobia is, really.

Splat: He would act like she eats one lol. He's a bit of an ass. Maybe he'll be the type to buy you gummy bugs so you could try to get used to them like that? Does it help? Not really, no, but it might? Who knows!

Static: Honestly, he's the worst. He doesn't understand fears anymore so he would find a bug and show it to you. He tries to help you get over your fear, but pushes it too much and he just DOESN'T get it. Why are you afraid of bugs? They're so cute! I'm sorry :(

Fresh Ink: She would understand why you're afraid of bugs, they're totes weird brah… but she doesn't want you to be, you know, freaked out too bad about them so exposer therapy it is! She's the best datemate in her eyes, and she tries to help you get over your fear of bugs! I mean if you're scared of bugs, you're gonna be all up and SO scared of her true self haha. That would suck QwQ/

Monster AU: Ghost Ghost is just maggots. Literally, he’s a zombie who’s body is held together by a hive mind of thousands and thousands of maggots. They don’t survive that long, so he’s got generations of maggots worth in his rotted body. His body can regenerate fully if given the time to, but he’s at a point where he can maintain a good maggot to flesh level.

If they’re not feeding on him as often he has to feed them. He’s not a zombie as in he has to eat human meat, any works, but hey sometimes times are hard. He can also eat vegetables and other foods for funsies, it’s just not as effective.

Drugs work… poorly, since he doesn’t generally have veins or a digestive organs most of the time. Alcohol and caffeine works similarly. Topical treatments actually work okay, for some strange reason. If his regeneration is stunted because of malnutrition or excessive injury, he can soak in medicated baths for short periods (maggots who don't want to drown need to jump ship before he gets in).

Outside maggots can be added to the mass if they eat some of his flesh. He needs to maintain at least the shell of his body to move. Most of the time he’s skin and bones basically (still a hunk, just, made of bugs).

A few maggots choose to leave once they’re old enough, so he has to keep the window in his room open for those who wanna become adults, but most just stay maggots until they die and get eaten.

As for the distinctions between him and the maggots, it’s pretty clear they just have a telepathic bond. His brain is intact and their’s are… really not all that great, but he can give them directions and usually they follow. They have emotions as a whole and they care for him, in the bizarre way a parasite can care for its host.

He’s not sure how it happened. He crawled out of the maggot filled grave with Vernon and once he got out and into daylight he realized they weren’t just on him they were in him. He panicked and tried to get them off and they obeyed, scattering out of his body like a leaking balloon. He collapsed and quickly realized that he didn’t have all that much flesh left.

He didn’t feel the pain but human minds don’t respond all that well to the visual of their body being injured so all he could do was choke down bile at the sight of his rotted body.

Then he finally noticed the fullness in his brain, thousands of specks of consciousness and they’re all feeling. They’re feeling shame and fear and cold and sympathy and love and he can’t handle it. He knows it’s the maggots, he knows, and he wants them out.

But they are out. and yet he can feel them writhing, like they’re his own flesh. Because they are his flesh now. Even outside his body they flex like his muscles used to. When he tries to grasp at his face a mass of them cover his eyes and nose and mouth and he screams. He knows he has his face and his eyes and even his nose, but the rest of him is just numb.

He tries to take his “hands” off his face and they maggots move, settling at his sides like his hands would. He lays there for some unknown amount of time and the next time he moves it works. He tries his leg, bending it at the knee and it does. His legs, and the rest of his body for that matter, are back.

But to either side of him, like a halved clone, still are the maggots. They writhe and crawl upon one another to mimic his movement. They’re cold and he’s calmed down enough to take pity on them. It’s weird, how quickly he becomes okay with the idea of them. He wasn’t particularly afraid of them before… whatever this was, but he didn’t like being around them.

They take his calmness as an invitation to go back to the warm, and burrow back into him. He shudders as they carve out their home in him again. But just as soon as they wounds on the outside of him appeared they disappear, leaving unmarred deathly-pale skin.

He comes to terms with the fact he feels their emotion and he feels there’s, and sits up. They way they shift and mimic his missing flesh is disconcerting, but he manages. He sets off, maggots and all, escaping the grave now empty of all life.

He later learns he wasn’t meant to live, that the maggots were meant to just be his final torture.

Roba had used them on people before. The simultaneous experience of you being eaten alive and the sympathetic feeling of eating your own flesh via the maggots. It was enough for peoples brains to overload. One final insult that felt self inflicted, Roba’s style exactly.

But Ghost survived, somehow, his flesh mended itself. Some sick adaptation his body made after years and years of abuse, to regenerate.

just general / random headcanons

Tyler has arachnophobia and entomophobia. creepy crawlies are a HARD NO for Mr. Hernandez. Jackass bullies? No problem. Phantoms trying to eat him? Easy. Tree? Been there, done that. Fucking spiders? get it the FUCK away. mans has a visceral skin crawling reaction to even SEEING something creepy crawlie. it's one of the only things that makes him seriously panic other than yk someone being hurt

Ashlyn has autism yes this is basically canon i think. BUT Ashlyn has a lot of texture sensitivities both with clothes and with food. itchy scratchy clothes are a no. she cannot stand t-shirts keeping their tags they rub and scratch her neck and it makes her want to scream. she cuts the tags out before wearing anything. and food she can't have anything too squishy or tough or else she just loses her appetite entirely.

^^ to build on the clothing tags. everyone else in the group cuts the tags out of their jackets/hoodies and some shirts so if Ashlyn wants to borrow something she can be comfortable

Aiden is down bad for someone wearing his clothes. this can apply to any ship you want, i like him with Ashlyn Tyler or Logan (ive like never seen any talk abt Aidgan? Loden?) but regardless. whoever it is Aiden likes he gets so giddy butterflies giggly seeing someone wear his clothes. this is moreso for Ashlyn or maybe Logan because Ashlyn is so much smaller than Aiden that his sweatshirt would probably hang off her and Aiden would just abdjshfkefbns she's so cute!! this is mostly an Aidlyn hc for me but Logan would also be cute in anyone else's sweatshirt

uh if it's not clear by now im a multishipper ive said it before BUT i like Tyben a lot. they find calm and quiet in each other and bond through expressing themselves through something much healthier: music. i adore Tyben. AND because of Ben in the canvas webtoon: Tyler calls him ladybug. "Hey ladybug" "It's okay ladybug ive got you" "ladybug, you okay?"

kinda related to previous one but like blush hc. Ben does not blush. maybe a little pink on his cheeks. but his EARS. his ears get so RED when he's angry or when he's flustered. his face might be 😐 but you look at his ears and they're red you know he's flustered

ALSO everyone learned ASL for Ben so he didn't have to just use notes n stuff. Aiden was already learning but everyone else picked up on it

Logan likes compact spaces, they male him feel safe and secure. Like the tire! He feels very nice and snuggly in his tire. But also like. under beds. in closets (haha). one time they played hide and seek in Aiden's house and Logan won because he fell asleep curled up in an empty cabinet. Logan loves being little spoon because he just fits snugly in everyone's arms

it's been mentioned Tyler plays guitar, but i hc that he's also a really good artist. because he got into baseball for a scholarship he's kinda dropped both art and music, but in getting to know the others and especially Ben he gets back into playing music which leads to him drawing again. he doodles pictures of his friends and they realize what a good artist he is. that's how he realizes he actually has passion for creativity and decides he wants to be a tattoo artist.

Taylor likes mechanics (cus. the club) but she also knows some programming. this is solely because I think Taylor would like making little robots just for fun. Aiden would beg her to make him a little robot like that one companion toy robot Cosmo

in canvas sbg Logan brought a bunch of clothes for them to wear in the pictures/videos they took. so. Logan likes cosplay and renn faires. History is one of his favorite subjects (the other being science. english/literature is a very close third. he doesn't dislike math just isn't his favorite) so he has a lot of clothes from different time periods because of the renn faires he's been to.

This is a really unhinged headcanon and isn't something ive ever thought about before but thinking about Logan having outfits and stuff made me think who would be the most likely to be a furry. and no not Logan. it would be Aiden. hes rich enough to splurge on his fursuit. THIS IS A JOKE I DONT HC HIM AS A FURRY THIS IS A "WHOS MOST LIKELY TO" PLEAS

Aiden's favorite subject is history, he likes reading about wars but he also enjoys learning about other cultures and differences from how we live in modern day America. Aiden would probably study anthropology just for the fun of it. he and Logan bond over their love of history. Aiden can't remember what he had for lunch yesterday but he can tell you every little detail he knows about the Civil War start to finish, dates and names and locations and all.

this is a really weird hc but. Ashlyn is an amazing rapper. there was a karaoke night and one song someone did had a rap part coming up and they were like ahaha it's too fast for me and Ashlyn just stood up. took the mic. and fucking blew everyone's minds. and then she sat down like she didnt just rock their world

this last bit is self indulgent. assuming the phantom world things don't last forever, the kids get therapy eventually :D

^^ building on that, Ben specifically, he lives in my head rent free. i love him sm. Ben gets therapy for not just the phantom world things but everything beforehand. slowly and surely, starting with Aiden and Lily and maybe whichever person he's shipped with, he starts talking again. Some days are better than others, sometimes he gets quiet again, other times he goes for days talking as much as anyone (except aiden he yaps.) everyone almost cries when Ben is doing something and begins singing to himself because they realize he's better

Hello hello hello!! This is the masterpost for my tmnt fan iteration/au, All or Nothing, aka aon!

This iteration takes place in 2019, and follows the turtles and their buddies as they fight against Shredder, the Foot Clan, Karai, and the Kraang. Things get dark quickly, even if things seem silly at first

The Turtles

In order from oldest to youngest, we have the four turtles. Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo. They live in the sewers with their father, Splinter, and live there peacefully for the first 14-15 years of their lives. They live specifically in an abandoned subway area, much like the rise boys.

April+Casey

The turtles met April on their third trip topside. She witnessed one of them falling into a dumpster late at night , while she was in the process of sneaking out. Of course, this is April O'Neil, aspiring news reporter, she can never just let things go. She went to investigate the four strange turtles and ended up becoming friends with them.
