Meanwhile, existing electroencephalography (EEG) and electrooculography (EOG) devices, that can be used to assess mental workload by measuring brain waves and eye movements respectively, are wired, bulky and prone to erroneous measurements arising from movements. By contrast, the “e-tattoo” is a lightweight, flexible, wireless device. The black, wiggly path of the e-tattoo is composed of a graphite-based conductive material, and is attached to the forehead using conductive adhesive film. Four square EEG electrodes, positioned on the forehead, each detect a different region of brain activity – with a reference electrode behind the ear – while rectangular EOG electrodes, placed vertically and horizontally around the eyes, provide data about eye movements. Each of the stretchable electrodes is coated in an additional conductive material. The e-tattoo, which is bespoke and disposable, is connected to a reusable flexible printed circuit using conductive tape, while a lightweight battery can be clipped to the device. After finding the e-tattoo worked as well as traditional EEG and EOG devices for monitoring brain waves and eye movements the team tested the technology on six participants.
‘E-tattoo’ could track mental workload for people in high-stake jobs, study says | Science | The Guardian

no, trust me, I know that the id I had before that wasn't valid; it was a whole Thing that I had an invalid military id, and that we had to change a bunch of shit. and this is just what I understand, we don't actually know how this happened other than daisy-chaining records every time we moved.
but when you get an id for a dependent (whcih was my first id and the one i had until i was 12), there's a form your parent/sponsor fills out for you that has all the information on it to go on the child's id, and you do NEED a birth certificate, but even though theyre supposed to, they don't really have to look at it for anything other than proof that you're related to your sponsor bc the legitimacy of your sponsor is the most important thing. all the actual id information is filled out on the form. this is the same process when a sponsor registers a new dependent, and it makes the record for that dependent.
idk, I was a kid, and what I mostly remember is getting called to the principals office bc I said my birthday was written wrong on an EOG testing form, and my mom was there looking really embarrassed. all the reasoning for it is what we figured happened later.
ok, now i do finally understand - this stuff does happen pretty often
this is government bureaucracy we're talking about, so fuck-ups are pretty much expected
but i will say that i don't believe for a second that they just 'didn't notice' the mistake when they were checking the certificate
if it was a mispelling of a name, that would be one thing - anyone could miss that; but an error like the date of birth or the child's gender is a lot harder to justify
there really isn't that much information on a birth certificate - it's one page, and i'm pretty sure the date of birth is literally the first thing on it
not to mention, they spell out the date on the certificate to avoid this specific thing from happening -
It would be written 'Thirtieth' in huge letters - there's no way you would miss it or mistake it for 'Twenty-Ninth'
it doesn't matter if you skimmed it, or even just glanced at the form, you'd almost certainly do a double take and notice that discrepancy
i would normally give them the benefit of the doubt like you did, but the fact that the person checking the birth certificate didn't clock the error genuinely makes me think that they just didn't bother to look at it at all
it doesn't matter now, so... take that for what you will, i guess

we stopped at a gas station this morning and a young girl held the door open for us and she had a screw top drink and something in a paper bag and that usually means a field trip so i thanked her and asked her if she was going on a field trip and she said "no, EOGs" (which is End Of Grade testing in NC, i thnk they call it different things in other places) and i was like that's the OPPOSITE of a field trip, good luck, soldier

End of Grade Testing
a Bluemelon oneshot 🫐🍉
__________________________________
Leo is at Ash’s house, watching her do EOGs on her computer. It’s a sweet kind of torture. He gets to be around his partner, but at what cost? Boredom.
"You're taking too long." Leo says as he leans over her, his chin on her shoulder. "I mean it's not like these questions are that hard. Cmon, hurry it up.” He hurries her.
“Dude.” Ash sighs.
"What?" Leo leans in closer, until he’s way too close for comfort. The computer dims, and the screen changes to a "please hold while this test loads" screen. For some unknown reason, he continues to stare at her, unblinking. Ash deadpans. “I hate you. Like actually.”
"Aww. You love me, really." Leo says, with an annoying smirk on his face. He reaches out, placing his hand on her cheek. Still maintaining eye contact, as if daring her to break it. “What are you doing?” She asks in annoyance, swatting his hand away.
He leans even closer to her, his distant gaze darting down to her lips. His mind is somewhere else entirely.
“No. Absolutely not.” Ash says.
"Come on..." Leo whispers.
His lips are so close to hers. He's almost teasing her. He's leaning in even more, until he's just an inch away from her face. Just like the screen, time has practically stopped. There's not a sound, other than their breathing and the occasional creaking from the mattress from Ash struggling to stay still.
“If I kiss you, will you leave me alone?”
“No.” At least he’s honest.
But she kisses him anyway.
It only lasts a few seconds, before she pulls back and Leo whines in protest. Ash sighs heavily, “are you happy now? Can I finish this?”
“Mm. Not quite,” Leo mumbles before kissing her again. This time it lasts a lot longer, as if it’s the last time he’ll be able to.
“Okay, now you can.”
“Sigh.”
A few minutes of complete silence go by, the faintest tapping of keys on the computer. Leo is sprawled out on the bed, staring the ceiling, his thoughts running a million miles a minute.
“I’m bored,” He groans, hands coming up to cover his face.
Ash lets out a long sigh. “Shut up. Please.”
Leo laughs, but it quickly turns into a bored yawn. "Please..." He says, leaning up on his elbows, looking at her with exaggerated puppy eyes. "I'm so boooored."
Ash sighs and reluctantly ushers Leo into her lap. Like a dog, he lays his head in her lap, looking up at her with bright ruby eyes. “Stay still,” Ash whispers, absentmindedly letting her fingers rub over his head, then drift down to twirl his mask tails around her forefinger and middle finger.
Leo squirms in her lap for a few moments, before settling down. His face is buried in her stomach, arms wrapped lazily around her hips. "Mm... I just want attention," he mumbles into her skin.
“I know. You can wait.”
Leo grumbles and sighs, before lifting his head from her chest and pouting up at her. "I'm gonna pout." He says, in a very over-dramatized tone, to show her he's being serious. "I'm gonna pout super hard, you just watch."
“Babe.” She takes his face in both her hands. “Wait. Okay?”
"Ugh. Fine.... Fine!" he protests, but he's grinning and playfully poking her with a stern face. "But remember that I'm pouting. Just like really hard, you heard that and you're still denying me attention. You're practically heartless."
Ash snorts. “I think I can live with that.”
"I'm serious." Leo says, continuing to pout, before breaking down into laughter. "Look at me, I'm pouting! I'm all sad! I'm gonna die, here-" Leo bursts into laughter again, giggling into her chest.
“I’m gonna die and you will be sad at my funeral.”
Ash huffs and shoves him into a pillow, Leos laugh sounding like a hyena on steroids. By this point, the test has completely fled Ash’s mind. She’s thinking about something else. Leo appears back in her lap, arms wrapped snugly around her waist.
He stares at her.
“What?”
“You’re pretty, Ash.”
“Thanks…”
Leo's eyes are locked onto hers, and he grins widely.
After a few long moments of silence, he leans over and brushes his fingers over her cheek. “I just don’t understand why you like me. I’m like, the world’s biggest idiot.”
“At least you’re self aware.” She quips.
"Exactly!" he says, still grinning. "Which makes me wonder why you stay with me. Like seriously, what am I offering you here? Nothing."
“If you want to be helpful, rub my shoulders for me.”
His lips curl up into a sly smile as he leans over and wraps his arms around her. He begins to gently massage the back of her neck, and the upper half of her shoulders. He's making gentle circles and using medium pressure.
"This all I’m good for?"
“Yeah.” She giggles. But she doesn’t mean it.
Leo chuckles, and kisses her forehead. His hands continue to rub at her shoulders. "Aww, so I'm just your personal shoulder masseuse? That's all I'm good for?"
“Yeah.”
Ash finishes the test eventually. To which Leo finds an appropriate thing to congratulate her for, because she somehow managed to finish it while he was running his mouth. Looking at the turtle rubbing her shoulders, she sighs, reluctant to give in to her needs and let the red eared slider get his way.
But still, she does. “Snuggle me?”
Leos face lights up. “Oh, yes ma’am.”
Pulls her under the several layers of blankets on her bed, the dark green comforter hugging her thin body snuggly, and pulls her into his chest. Her soft breath fans over the ridges in his plastron.
“Hey, look at me.”
He puts his hand under her chin, and gently lifts her head up so their eyes are locked. “I love you, you know that right? I really, really love you. You’re my everything. No one else can compare to you, y'know that?”
Ash’s emerald eyes become distant, sleep starting to overtake her stressed mind. “Mhm.”
Leo smiles widely at her tired, half-asleep face. Her lashes flutter, but she keeps staring at him, her eyes half shut. “You look so sleepy right now,” he teases. “You were doing your test for awhile there, huh? You're probably super exhausted.”
Ash sighs. “I don’t sleep well.”
Leo goes quiet for a moment, a look of worry crossing his face. “You don't? That's not good. Why's that?”
Heat fills her cheeks.
He notices it, and the worried expression doesn't wash away. He pulls her into a tighter cuddle, and rubs a hand gently over her back. "Hey, hey." Leo looks down at her. "What's going on? Why don't you sleep well?"
“Because I’m almost fifteen and still scared monsters will get me,” she mumbles shamefully.
Leo chuckles, before realizing she was serious. His smile fades from his face, and he's suddenly completely serious.
"Hey, look at me." He leans forward and lightly squeezes her chin to make sure she keeps him in her sight. "I will keep you safe, understand? I promise. That's not gonna happen. I'm not going to let a monster take you. I'll kick its ass, alright?"
“Okay…” Ash’s voice trails off. “What if they get me?”
“They won’t. I’ll fight them off, with all the power I have. I’ll put everything I have into protecting you. I swear to you that I will. They’ll be afraid of me.”
She smiles, feigning amusement. “Would they?”
"Damn right, I'm a scary guy." His voice is playful, and he's grinning as he squeezes her again. "You think I'm not intimidating? I'm terrifying. I could beat up a monster no problem. That’s easy work."
“Oh, my hero.” Ash drawls, voice laced with sarcasm.
Leo grins. "Exactly! So no more worrying, right? No more being afraid. I'll come in with a flying kick and a few well-placed punches, they'll be toast."
The red haired girl groans, squeezing every limb around him tightly. “You’re dumb…”
"I'm dumb, but I'm your dumb, okay? Just close your eyes. Come on, don't make me count you down." He's grinning, but he also sounds genuinely concerned. He wants to make her feel safe.
“I think,” Ash starts, “I’m gonna marry you.”
Leos eyes light up. “Yeah?”
“Yeah. I’ll marry you and keep you trapped in the basement so you can never leave me.” She jokes. “You’ll be forever trapped.”
"In the basement? But that means you won't be able to cuddle me!” Leo's tone is light, but he laughs and nudges her arm with his. “I think we'd have to sleep in the same bed, just so you can keep me trapped properly."
“No, basement is fine.”
"Come on, I'm not going to be able to live without cuddles in the basement! I'd slowly go insane without them!" Leo shakes his head, his voice taking on a playful tone again. "No cuddles for days? No kisses on the forehead? But how could i even survive? You'd be sentencing me to death!"
“Leo.”
“Yesss?”
“Quiet down.”
“Yes ma’am.”

Me: Giving a makeup EOG
My coworker I have a crush on: Somehow misses the sign on the door that says “testing do not disturb”, the sign that says “dispersed due to makeup EOG testing”, the four signs with the dispersal info and the chair of work packets in front of the door, all of which my students some of whom barely read at a first grade level were able to comprehend
My coworker I have a crush on: looking sheepish and whispering “oh sorry I didn’t notice the signs can I borrow a broom?” (I do not have a broom)
Me, in my head:

#jlktalks.#adventures in teaching#nothing is sexier than men that are super intelligent but also so so so stupid
