Back when I was teaching Japanese college students, I remember escorting some of my students back to their dorms from a burger place one of the other mentors invited them to late at night (he ditched them there and I was mad about it because they didn't know the area well).
While we were walking back, I was expressing my disappointment and saying it was inappropriate for that mentor to invite them out without walking them back since it was late at night and it wasn't a great part of the city, but after a few minutes I apologized to them saying something like "I know most of you are grown adults and I don't want you to think I see you as helpless children, but I do want to make sure you get home safely," and one of them said in the kindest most sincere voice, "We know. You are like a Japanese mother."
And I was just like *voice cracking* "Cool" and walked them the rest of the way back to their dorms, then walked to the bus with my face buried in my hands.
#i talk#My favorite student also said I reminded him of his mother (who he'd spoken of very highly the entire trip) and I was like#*VOICE CRACKING* ''OH. THANK YOU.''#Man I love all those students so much#That was right before one of the worst periods of my life#but I remember the time I spent with them so fondly#One of them was a 40 year old woman who was so surprised I knew who Kaito was when I saw him on the background of her computer#and she was like ''That is Miku's boyfriend'' and I was trying my best not to burst into giggles because she said it so seriously#My favorite student was an absolute sweetheart. When I said goodbye to him and the rest of my students I burst into tears while going home#All of the Pokemon nerds and I played Pokemon Go together and it was so fun#I mostly spoke English with them because I wanted to make sure they were getting enough practice#but I did speak Japanese with them for funzies sometimes (esp. if they were having trouble understanding something)#but I have a tendency to use casual speech and when I found out one of my students was older than me#(one who I always used casual speech with)#I was like WHOOPS. Well. Oh well#he thought it was funny but I guess technically it was fine since I was his mentor / teacher#He was a very serious guy but he was always very nice#Though the one day I wasn't there he got into a fight with another student because they were rude to him#but you know. it happens#anyways. All of them were so sweet#I almost cried saying goodbye to my elementary school students too when I finally decided to swap jobs#The little Mexican boy and girl I taught came up to me and silently hugged me so tightly and cried and cried and cried#and I almost started crying too#agh#I love kids I love college students#aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh. education is such a tough field to work in and the pay sucks and you're constantly overworked#but I loved my students so much. I still love them. I hope they're all doing ok#I remember when the Orange Idiot got elected one of the students who was planning to study abroad here messaged me#and I asked him if he still planned to come study here and he said yes because ''I believe the good people outnumber the bad''#I think about that all the time

Why do you think Roier and Missa are easiest to understand? I found the same thing as someone who's just learning Spanish, and I wasnt sure if it was because I've watched so much Roier content that it influenced my ability to understand him, or if there's a deeper reason due to some regional accent differences being easier for non-native speakers to understand. I'm curious about your thoughts since you have really good insights into linguistics, but ignore this if it's too much for tumblr lol!
neither of them talk super fast, and imo their accents are fairly easy to understand-- for me, missa is easy to understand bc he's from the north and that region has accents i'm more familiar with, and roier's accent is somewhat neutral although obviously still clearly mexican and he uses a lot of slang. i think that also helps-- roier uses a lot of the same vocab, so if you're still learning spanish, you can pick up that slang and then understand quite a bit of what he's saying because he swears literally five times in a single sentence. they both speak pretty clearly and, additionally, i think most non-native spanish speakers, especially U.S. americans, are most familiar with mexican spanish rather than other dialects. so that's why someone like rubius or spreen is harder for nonnative speakers to understand, unless they're more familiar with spanish or argentine dialects specifically.
for me it's hard to parse bc i understand most of what they all say regardless since i've spoken spanish for so long, but i think rivers is just difficult because she speaks very fast. mariana is pretty easily to understand as well, there's just less for me to say about him tbh idr where he's from and i don't really have a hard time understanding him, i just watch him less than anyone else really.
for quackity, his accent is more noticeable, and his spanish is a little weirder, in that he is so bilingual and if you're not familiar with that way of speaking it can be hard to pick up what he's saying sometimes. this is partially why i wish there were a few more latino americans on the server so people get more familiar with that type of bilinguality-- i think quackity is in a unique position that he doesn't full share with other server members (aside from mouse, in that she is also a latino who lives in the states, although from a content perspective she doesn't do the same kind of bilingual split that q does nor does she stream in spanish), and i would be interested to see more of that kind of diasporic latino experience on the server. that's me rambling and doesn't have to do with accents i've just been thinking about it for a while and i think it would be cool. but yeah q phrases things funny sometimes because he's thinking of the english way of saying something or vice versa, and he is by far one of the most fluently bilingual members of the server, so it's an interesting dynamic for people watching him who aren't super familiar with spanish nor the kinds of calques and things that end up happening with bilingual speakers.
anyway back to your actual questions i do also think exposure does tip the scales lol most of us watch more roier than anyone else and esp for people just learning spanish, you're gonna understand him better than anyone else because of that. which is nice in some ways bc you learn a lot of slang but also if you're going to speak spanish in any kind of non-casual setting please do not talk like roier he is a fucking crazy person who swears so much it's actually unreal

Fascinating interaction I just had with a co-worker, who I think was expecting me to agree with him:
He was complaining about a new text to speech system, because he's convinced students are "just using it so that they can listen to our comments, not because they're visually impaired" and like......ooookay?
If they want to listen to an audio version of the comments to understand them better, I really don't care if they do that cuz their eyes literally can't read the comments or just because they're a better audio learner, or because they're ESL and, let's be real, English is much easier to understand when spoken (esp since tutors obvs have to write clearly and with correct grammar, no slang, etc) since some of the things that consistently trips up ESL learners are spelling and conjugating verbs themselves.
He literally said we should have stricter requirements for a student to show if they're actually visually impaired to use the service and like.....nnno? No we shouldn't?

I was going to ask abt transfem marc too but they beat me to it lol
You said you had headcanons about the system and their relationship to gender? I'm listening,,,,,,,,,
YUSS!! I’ve talked ab stuff off and on in various other posts, like the ones I’ve done on clothing, Jake’s sense of self/home, and some of these, but I’d love to do a lil dedicated hc post just on my gender vibes for em :-)
Since I’ve just done the one on Marc I’ll do only Steven and Jake in this one, though Marc’s gender stuff can vary, again, based on the headcanons I work with (like sometimes he’s a cis man sometimes he’s a trans man sometimes he’s ?? sometimes he’s transfem, etc).
Some of this esp Jake’s stuff will get into heavy hc territory but I hope I can give my vibes for my thoughts in a cohesive way anyway. This will also ofc be an examination of their genders through the lense of western/American systems of gendering, as well as through English language understandings and descriptions of those experiences. There is so much that can also be filled out culturally and through the lens of different languages when it comes to concepts and connection to gender and the self. So while this is limited to a certain scope, I hope it can still spark some thoughts and ppl are welcome to add on their own ideas as well :-)
Let’s go!
Steven’s vibes to me are generally autigender man/cis+. He would use the label of man, he doesn’t necessarily feel outside of the binary or like he connects strongly with anything outside of being a man, but it’s different for him conceptually and in experience than it is for neurotypical cis men.
He doesn’t really think very strongly about the role he’s meant to play, the stereotypes he’s meant to fit. Gender isn’t really a concept on his mind as far as something to worry about or adhere to or live up to. He’s just… vibing. He’s soft spoken and friendly and snappy and awkward. His experience with others is more shaped by how they accept him for his behaviors than how they perceive him for his performance of masculinity. Because he doesn’t try very hard.
He likes loose clothing for sensory reasons, big sweaters, comfortable pants and shoes, things with patterns that make him happy and relate to his interests. And that includes skirts sometimes, maybe occasionally dresses if they’re long sleeved. He doesn’t think “I’m a bloke I can’t wear a skirt” he just does. He talks to people and connects with them, he’s earnest and kind, he cries and loves his fish. He doesn’t have this same weight that can come with trying to fit within the bounds of gendered expectations.
I feel in some ways if he had to try and conceptualize his own gender it would be strange, a role that’s not exactly been strongly felt or enforced (he wasn’t a part of a lot of the hypermasculine parts of their life, doesn’t have the same input Marc or even Jake do), but he also feels comfortable in being a man, in that being his label and the space he occupies.
He likes suits, he likes being called someone’s boyfriend or husband, he likes being called Mr. Grant, he likes the memories of receiving his tallit on his bar mitzvah, and still leads blessings over wine and challah on Shabbat, but none of it feels like an obligation. He also thinks makeup can be really fun and expressive, he likes wearing earrings or bracelets if they add a pop to his outfit, and he lights the candles on Shabbat without feeling out of place (until he encourages Marc to start doing it, to heal through that reclamation of the motherly role [idea courtesy of @fdelopera ]). He’s just comfortable where he is, not feeling the need to do too much and not feeling a need to change.
His brain experience plays into that conceptualization of gender and self, something that can’t be separated when describing it and in some ways can’t be described. Gender is experienced differently when you do not meet the same social expectations/understand the same social cues for it to be taught to you, when the rules themselves don’t make sense, when you have a blended experience of life.
So Steven is Steven, and that’s all he needs to know, and all he needs to be :-)
Jake is more complicated. Again I’ve talked about it before, I think perhaps even in its own post, but I forget the things I’ve ranted about on discord or in various ppls dms versus actual posts. Most of the text I’ll give here is from a wonderful conversation with spicyboelives over on Instagram, as that’s one of the best times I’ve been able to express my thoughts on this, but the ideas themselves have grown from multiple conversations with multiple people.
Essentially though, Jake’s having a ball.
Gender is one of his ways to reclaim and take hold of his sense of self, of his personhood, and as such it is multifaceted and strange. It has pieces to it, distinct ways of experience. To delve into his gender I have to delve first into my thoughts on his existence, and how he feels about that existence, because they’re deeply related and hard to talk about separately.
Jake Lockley protects. In my headcanon of his role and actions he’s a gatekeeper, a physical protector, and an extractor. He handles things Marc can’t, and his goal is to get them away from the threat or neutralize the threat so they’re safe, whether that be a direct attack, or self harming tendencies Marc may be enacting.
When he’s not out—for fast moments, for adrenaline filled snapshots of an outer world—he keeps them steady on the inside, makes sure whoever’s in the front seat is who needs to be and that no memories are trying to backseat drive them into a car crash. With such limited time out, and such a specific purpose, I think personhood as a concept would be complicated. He doesn’t get to experience things the same way Steven and Marc do, and he’s got a lot of responsibility and awareness from the start on what to do and how to do it.
He’s their transport, their traffic coordinator. He’s not fully a person, and he doesn’t get a chance to Be someone for a long time. So he builds it on his own, finds what he likes, the things he can take and repurpose into his own meaning and use, make them his so he has something to keep and someone to be. He defines his own edges, his own boundaries. Jakob wrestled with G-d and Jake takes that for himself. He is the lock and key for memories and he takes that. He forms himself into a man, into an experience, into a tool and a vehicle and a weapon. He is himself, and he is nothing. He is a man, and he is no one.
Jumping forward, for a moment, there was a joke in fandom early on about Jake using she/her pronouns. This came from that scene at the end of episode two where Khonshu threatens Marc with making Layla his next avatar, but he says “you may not like my next candidate, near and dear as she is to you.”
And as Khonshu ended up always wanting Jake, some people were like “omg she/her Jake real.” And then as me and other people are wont to do, we took that seriously. I’ve seen a lot of transbian Jake headcanons and similar stuff, and I realized I really liked some kind of gnc aspect for him. It tracks. Gender is a part of identity and self definition, and queerness is contradictory and strange and powerful. So then I headcanon Jake with the following:
—he/him for the man, the boy, the cabbie, the smile
—it/its for the tool, the entity, the weapon, the space he displaces, the cracks in between
—she/her like how you reference a car or a boat, taking power from things he loves and the weight of painted nails pushing a flat cap up, or lipstick under a mustache; gender nonconformity is confusing and not stuck to the binary idea of people and men, and he is not wholly a person, not wholly a man
He is Jake, and his boundaries can’t be defined by anyone else but himself because they are his to control and his to grip with moon-shielded knuckles, to pull back beneath the suit and tie into the practiced Someone he’s chosen to be.
In line with this, through a semi-recent conversation, I realized something else for him. Cars get people from place to place, they’re an escape, the rumbling engine and headlights showing the way, and for the system Jake is their transport. He gets them out, gets them away, pushes them off-road when they have to dodge an obstacle.
And I think there’s something there that really connects, that feels right. Humans anthropomorphize vehicles of all types, see them as a friend and a companion, and isn’t that what he is? I feel like Jake really connects with cars on an identity level, just with what feels right, with what he does, with how he experiences the world and the ways his brain connects with things and people and himself.
So like… in more modern terms, I feel like he might be partly cargender/otherkin for cars as well. He’s not a fully human headmate, and vehicles are something he aligns with, connects to, and loves on a self level. Maybe he’d even be a car in headspace sometimes, stuff like that can happen, and I think it’s an interesting layer to explore for him and his actions and who he is (and can even add an interpretation to the Shiva memory scene of the cab in the background being Jake, being him watching over Marc at the time, hovering in the periphery).
With all of it, with all of him, it is complicated. But she knows, she gets himself. Jake doesn’t need others to understand it, to know why it is the way she is. He just is.
Just Jake.

Hellooooo I love your writing so much and would like to do a BoB ship request if you’re still up for those ! Please take your time, I have a bunch of stuff down so it could be hard to get through <33
My pronouns are she/her. I have straight, dark black hair that grows a little over my shoulder and dark brown eyes that only shines under really bright light.
I’m an INFP 9w1– though on topics of interest I could become analytical and slightly more willing to engage in debates.
Initially when talking to new people I’ll usually express curiosity and be soft-spoken to the extreme level, cuz I sorta have anxiety 😭
I pretty much have a (chaotic) golden retriever energy and am really fond of joking around once I get to know someone, though. My sense of humour is beyond repair: a mix of dad jokes, bad puns, and sometimes lighthearted sarcasm. I also ramble about things I’m interested in sometimes.
If someone is able to put up with my weird I’m also really supportive + try my best to help them in any ways I can, since I enjoy helping people.
Sometimes I get closed off after getting to know someone mainly because I have a lot of self-doubt and scared of getting hurt esp if I find them likeable? It’s a weird thing.
My love language are words of affirmation and physical touch mainly, the lateral only reserved for people whom I’m really close to. It takes a while to get close to me but once I love you I am an absolute mess, completely smitten.
My hobbies are drawing, watching films, and listening to relaxing music! My favourite season is probably autumn. I’m bilingual (English + Vietnamese) and am learning French and German fundamentals.
Currently I am gearing towards biochemistry/chemical engineering in general.
Thank you for your patience! I sort of went off on my own there for a bit there, sorry about that…
oh don't worry about how much you put. The more information the better. I hope you love it!!
꒰ I ship you with . . . Joseph Liebgott ৎ୭ ꒱
Tumblr media
You two meet by accident. He runs into you and immediately apologises. However, he decides to continue speaking to you and getting to the point of asking for your number. Smooth.
He is pretty forward with his feelings and when he is smitten with you; He will tell you. Probably in person whilst hanging out.
I think you two would end up planning a first date together. A picnic seems lovely and fitting for the both of you.
He definitely drops food during the picnic but then plays it off as, “I am trying to make you laugh”
After a date, he's dropping you off and just decides to kiss you because, why not? You looked beautiful, so did your lips. He was staring at them all night. It was only right that he finally gave them a kiss.
he's very gentle especially since he assumes the kiss will catch you a bit offguard.
I think for a song, I'm giving you two; ps I love you by the Beatles !!
Joe makes it clear if he does or doesn't like someone. That's the great thing about him. So you needn't worry about if he likes you or not.
He brags about you... A lot
it's just how he is, he brags about you and treats you like a queen
He plans movie nights at the end of each week.
Joe isn't artistic... However, he is highly impressed by your artistic talents. He is the type of person to be baffled by people's talents. Even if he doesn't outwardly express his shock.

I think people can be a little too harsh on the tlers its smth ive thought abt for a while. Like ppl criticised wizard cookie for being much “meaner” in the revised english translation but actually he was always a pretty snarky kid even back in ovenbreak, they just dialled it up and also gave him jabs in his dialogue that made more sense in english. And espressos supposed diff personality in eng to kr bc thanks to koreans grammar systems he slips from polite/formal into informal on occasion to make a point abt his upbringing. You obviously cant do that in english so expecting translators to just magically come up w a faithful tl for that isnt fair. Except english does have a form of the same thing which they did use, espresso talks in such contrived formal sentences w zero contractions or any figures of speech to the complexity that ive seen a couple of instances where ppl didnt even understand what his dialogue meant. And we can ask ourselves why that was their chosen method. While i cant read korean we can only assume espressos formal speech is to adapt to high republic society which hes not born into and treats him worse for it, and hes on the defence to prove his place there. And we can also only assume his informal tense is more true 2 his natural way of talking. In english espressos so well-spoken its jarring compared with other charas, esp latte who is a similar position to him but so much more relaxed, and he comes across as stuck-up and rude for it. But doesnt that also serve the same purpose as being a voice he puts on to prove he belongs in academia/high society/etc bc if you really thought abt it his manner of speaking just wouldnt naturally happen. Does this kind of alter his personality? Yeah but in the case where they struggled to tl a largely grammar-based point of characterisation into a language where u just cant do the same thing he would probably come across as so much drier. A localisation being different to the original text isnt a bad thing, its often necessary to rephrase things or make changes to a character so that these small things abt charas r communicated more intuitively without you having to think abt them or keeping in mind that the game isnt originally english. Like they arent trying to sabotage a characters personality most of the time they have to make minor sacrifices so that you arent completely lost trying to pick up on all the subtext and cues from a culture u arent from. This is the point where id also defend the 1 dchoco line in the dark cacao kingdom storyline everyone and their mother had a problem with but i dont remember it so im not gonna

i really love ur writing on shakespeare! i was wondering if you had any thoughts on how it should be taught to schools, esp lower grades. remembering my own education we literally started and ended with a contemporary english translation of hamlet in 8th grade. feel like theres a lot of room for improvement there! ❤️
yes, definitely. "translations" into contemporary english are quite possibly the laziest way to teach shakespeare, and that's saying something.
when my brother first started reading shakespeare for school, i would read it aloud to him, and pause to discuss every scene, either when he asked me a question, or when i felt the need to interject. at first, he didn't understand anything that was going on, but by the time we finished the play, he was asking fewer and fewer questions, because he was comprehending more and more of what we were reading.
i first read shakespeare at a very young age with my dad, who read midsummer and r&j with me when i was like 5, and i definitely think reading aloud to/with kids will familiarize them with the language, which is written in iambs specifically because it flows well when spoken aloud.
hamlet is quite possibly the worst play to start children with, because it's very dense and ambiguous and inscrutable, and doesn't benefit from being read aloud quite as much as his others, because it's actually far more Poetry than Play (at least compared to his other plays). i recommend starting kids off with a play like the tempest, which is engaging, lucid, and doesn't overstay its welcome. plays like hamlet or king lear are definitely not easy reads for someone just dipping their toes into shakespeare, and i get why people whose only exposure to his works being that play in particular often go on to feel deterred and have no interest in pursuing the rest.
in my experience, starting kids really young (8th grade is also much too old imo) will help familiarize them with the language until that's no longer even a concern for them, but i might be a unique case because i did enjoy already shakespeare so much as a child, which obviously isn't true of everyone, even if you do expose them to it young. plus, english wasn't my first language, so it was easier for me to read the early modern syntax and not feel alienated, because it just felt like part of the english vocab and grammar structures i was already absorbing in my elastic little child brain as i was acclimating to the united states.
but yeah, as i said. reading aloud, exposure to the more Fun and fastpaced plays first, and also just generally putting genuine care and love into the experience have always worked well in my experience. i know a lot more about shakespeare than my father does now of course, but his genuine passion reading aloud to me as a child was probably formative in my love of literature since childhood, and i know that my passion for shakespeare has translated whenever i've taught his work to someone, young or old, esl or native english speaker, and they've grown to appreciate it too.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Idiomatic Meaning: The final result; central or salient point; The fundamental and most important or determining factor; the essence, the point, the crux of the argument; the final analysis, conclusion, or outcome, esp. after a debate.
Literal Meaning: Most basically, a line drawn underneath anything, such as a column of figures, or even the final line in a series of horizontal perhaps parallel lines.
Usage: Formal and informal, spoken and written general American and British English. “The bottom line” is a noun, though increasingly it is being used as a verb as in“bottom line me”, a request to leave out the details of an explanation and skip to the important part.
Origin: Mid -19th Century – The phrase was repopularized in the mid-1960s by corporate America to describe the physical bottom line of a profit and loss statement where the final numerical figure is placed, showing whether a company made a profit or took a loss. By the 1980s, the term “the bottom line” took on a figurative sense to mean the most important facet of a situation or the outcome of a situation.
Why is this funny? In the photo, we see an older gentleman with many wrinkles or lines in his forehead. He is complaining about getting old and how old he looks with those lines. Someone else tells him that, in reality, no one cares about his wrinkles. This person is saying that “the bottom line” is that neither the bottom line nor any other line in his forehead is relevant!
Sample Sentence: “The bottom line” of the 2020 US presidential election is that Trump lost.

HISTORY.
tw: violence, abuse, car crash, death
His body had always been this laden, precarious construction made of bone-deep exhaustion, muscles and sinews, sharp edges dulled by chemicals and the vast emptiness that was left in the wake of destruction. This singular truth did not paint a picture of vacant, unfeeling eyes or self-indulgent violence in his teenage years (though it certainly could have) - it simply meant that Blake always thought there was a gap between what he felt and what he wanted to feel, a space where something important had been carved out. Sometimes, especially in that hazy hour just before dawn when alcohol and bruises burn sharp, he thought it might have been better if he’d just let his father beat that tentative gentleness out of him. One did not do well with such frivolous things as emotions in the Sterling family, his mother knew that better than anyone.
Blake does not have some glorious origin story to tell, it has always read more like a tragedy than anything else, so he doesn’t tell it at all. But for context’s sake - even his earliest memories include the vague idea of the Wilds, burnt tire and the smell of gasoline, cracked skin stretched across bloody knuckles, a deck of cards frayed at the edges. When he was little and when his father would go out for a job, Blake often prayed (’You must not pray for such horrible things, Blake! Shush, repeat after me...’) that someone’s bullet might stray towards his father’s heart, or miss its target and hit a tire, let the physics do the rest. But even if he wasn’t a good man, one could never say Richard Sterling was anything less than an excellent driver.
He wasn’t, however, an excellent gambler - though he certainly never gave up practising. He had his good nights, as everyone does, and it was after those nights that he would bring his mother glittering gold bracelets and rock-laden silver rings, shouting like a maniac while she shushed him (’Don’t wake the children! Where did you get that?’). She’d kiss Blake on the forehead with a busted lip the next night - those were the bad nights. Once he was old enough to understand Blake would often follow his mother downstairs during those nights, incendiary and with insolence dripping from his lips. His father did not like that, and he liked Blake even less, but at least his mother didn’t have to take the brunt of his father’s rage. Blood dripped from his lips after that as he smiled his red-tinted smile (’Bad night, old man? What a shame.’) and his mother begged him to go upstairs, don’t provoke him, she’d handle it. But he never was a very obedient son. His father had steel-toed boots, Blake’s ribs still remember the shape.
He remembers the good things too. Kneeling in a pew beside his mother and sister, head hung low, his soul relishing in the soothing silence. His sister’s laughter as he drove them through the outskirts of the city during ungodly hours, her hands stretching up, up, up as cold wind whipped them in the convertible. His mother’s soft, warm palm against his cheek (’You’re a good man Blake, don’t let him take that away from you.’). The family he made in the Wilds - who taught him how to drive, who showed him how to take the engine out, who taught him how to fight when his father only taught him how to take a punch. He clings to these memories like a drowning man whenever the bad ones try to drag him under.
He was twenty-eight when he killed his father. That was nearly ten years ago - he still remembers the smell of gunpowder and the iron tang of blood. Blake had learned to fight young and to fight well, but he never fought his father - Blake’s grin (’Getting tired? Come on, old man, is this all you’ve got?’) angered him more than a punch. So he smiled his blood-stained smiles, spoke his reckless words and learned to take it until his father was too tired to go after his mother and sister. He’d warned him once though - lay a finger on Elena and you will lose the offending hand or more. And Blake’s nothing if not committed. It’s how he got the scar at the base of his neck, where his father’s blade had dug itself into his skin until it bled. It’s why he doesn’t bother hiding it, his scars are a study in survival, after all. His father’s crime that day? He’d brought a knife to a gunfight. Blake held him in his arms as the old man slumped against him, eyes wide and astonished (’I’m sorry it had to end like this dad. Yes, I know mama won’t ever forgive me - my soul for her safety, I’d do it again.’). His baby sister sat on the floor, bloodied and bruised, and the only thing she said was ‘How will you forgive yourself, Blake?’. He wouldn’t, he won’t.
There are a lot of things in Blake’s life that he won’t ever forgive himself for, just learn to live with them. Nick is one of them, even if it’s hard to regret what once made you feel so alive. He was a driver for the Wilds too and had been around since he and Blake were barely nineteen - a creature so loyal, so fearless, Blake often joked it’d cost him his head eventually. The joke tastes bitter and prophetic in his mouth these days, though he couldn’t have known - they were young and drunk on their glory, like gods at the dawning of the world, indestructible, immortal. Blake had loved him dearly, furtively, in between the lines - he got drunk off his laughter and drowned in his wilderness. He knows Nick loved him too, but never enough to satiate the hungry thing within Blake, never the way he’d wanted to be loved - fervently, without restraint, with calloused fingers wrapped around his neck in the darkness of his car. So he tortured himself rather than give him up, he was always good at being grateful for whatever slivers of goodness he was given.
So if he refuses to tell you how he got that scar across his lip, don’t hold it against him, he’s trying hard not to fall apart. Blake wasn’t supposed to be on that job at all - he’d already become a second-in-command by then and should’ve been otherwise occupied - but they had felt particularly nostalgic that night (’You should come, Ace, like good old times, the two of us and the tarmac. Don’t chicken out on me, you drive.’) and Blake still wonders what could’ve been if he hadn’t sat behind the wheel that Friday. It’s rotten work, this pondering - drives a man insane - but if you ever see Blake fight or drink until he can’t hear his thoughts anymore, he’s probably trying not to ponder. There’s not much to the story, really - he drove, he made a mistake, Nick died. Blake didn’t. That’s all there is to it, all that ever will be.
TLDR;
born into the world of crime, his father was a driver for the Wilds and an abusive pos. his mother refused to leave his father, but otherwise she was a good mom and blake loves her dearly.
started with the Wilds relatively young, learned to drive for them and work with cars. he’s always considered them his family, and it’s people in the Wilds that taught him and offered him everything his father never did.
secretly went to uni to study mechanical engineering since his father would disapprove and time was tight anyway, but blake was too curious not to go for it.
made a promise to his father when he was sixteen that he’d come after him if he ever hurt blake’s baby sister elena. old man didn’t take him seriously until blake was 28 and found his sister with a busted lip and his father standing above her.
it’s when he got the scar on his neck - his father broke the skin with his knife and blake shot him. not for what he’d done to him (though he thought his father might actually kill him this time), but because of the promise he made to elena that she’d be safe.
mom kinda never forgave him for it, though they’re still close and in contact - she just looks at him differently.
used his twenties and early thirties to fight his way up through the ranks, refusing to be like his father - a dissatisfied, abusive man who was too drunk on his vices to ever do something significant.
he didn’t do it purely out of ambition, he really loves the Wilds and there’s nothing he wouldn’t do to protect them.
the death of his best friend Nick (whom he was secretly in love with) was the straw that broke the camel’s back. blake was driving, and though there wasn’t much he could’ve done, he still blames himself for the car crash that he surived and Nick didn’t.
he’s now hyperfocused on his work and the Wilds, and still struggles with the guilt of everything that he’s done. it didn’t affect his work ethic, but he does indulge in self-destructive behaviour as long as it doesn’t affect anyone else.
he keeps Nick’s memory alive by taking care of his girlfriend and their little daughter, Blake’s godchild. it pained him to see them after the crash, but he refused to be selfish - they needed the support and protection, and that trumps Blake’s pain, even if he sometimes can’t hide it.
MISC.
a lot of people know him as ace and call him that instead of blake. he’s good with cards, sure (much better than his father) and can work a deck like nobody’s business, but it actually originated from that time when he shoved an ace of spades down the throat of the first man he killed.
though he doesn’t believe in god anymore, he goes to church religiously every sunday with his mother, unwilling to take that away from her when she’s already lost so much. sometimes, he goes on his own too, during the night, just to sit in silence and battle his demons.
has a pilot license he got during uni when his studies focused on aviation. goes flying when he needs to clear his head - he used to do that with driving, but after nick’s death plane doesn’t trigger as much memories.
has 2 dogs, dobermanns that he sort of shares with his little (not so little anymore) sister elena. they are very well behaved and absolutely in love with blake’s goddaughter (don’t come too near kids without permission, they’re rather stand-offish about it)
finds his work on modding the cars relaxing, it’s why he still does it when he gets the chance. he might have been a driver instead, had nick not died, but these days it’s too painful.
he still participates in races though - absolutely lives for the adrenaline, and as long as he’s the only one in the car he’s up for it.
drags around an old beaten zippo that has an engraving (’As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil because I am the evilest son of a bitch.) it’s not actually his (his has an ace of spades engraved), but nick’s. he will protect that thing with his life.
has a house full of plants? which is random and entirely unexpected considering his whole image, but it started when he was a teen and elena’s plants kept fucking dying so he adopted them. he keeps adopting them since she keeps compulsively buying them and so the house now looks like a botanical garden. he’s surprisingly good at keeping them alive though.
his knuckles are always beat up, to some degree at least. they never fully heal because he can’t go a week without using fighting as his outlet. it’s safer and more responsible than choice alternatives like alcohol, or morphine.
will add more eventually!
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
the sister. she’s blakes lil bby sis (as mentioned in the bio). adores her to the moon and back and would do absolutely anything for her. he feels like he couldn’t have survived all this without her around. i left her affiliation etc. fairly vague (so she can be either involved or uninvolved with the wilds) tbh we can just work it out if you want her <3
the girlfriend. not his, his dead best friend’s gf (nick). i would sell my kidney for this plot but basically he was in love with nick but kept it a secret and really cared for this girl cause she was good for nick (and cause nick loved her). she can be either unaffiliated or affiliated with the wilds but essentially she was pregnant when nick died and he made blake promise to take care of her and the baby no matter what happened. so blake does, basically treats the kid as his own even though there’s painTM (kid has nick’s eyes + he feels responsible for nick’s death) this can be as angsty as you please (pls)
the mentee(s). someone in the wilds he feels responsible for. wilds are blake’s whole life. i’d love to see someone he maybe spars with or races with or works on cars with. literally anything works! it can stretch as long back or be as recent as you’d like!
the customers. someone from whom he modded a car in the past, or someone who’s interested in it. he really loves to work on those things haha
sparring partners/drinking buddies/etc. you know the vibe, someone he can fight with to let off steam or drink with and not have to think for a moment.
one night stands. he’s a ho. but he’s also a ho that had to deal with unrequited love for years and then with losing that person.
the curious. someone he’s close to outside the wilds (unaffiliated) who might suspect that there’s something nefarious going on. think of the drama.
misc. literally anything that comes to mind! childhood friends, enemies from other gangs (give me that burning hatred!), negative influence, exes on bad or good terms (he can do both tbh), two people that share a secret...
i will add more eventually, but honestly hmu if you’re curious about any of these and want more info or to work through it! <3

❤️Romantic f/o tag explanations+ links
(+Leviathan bc he used to be a romantic but he got switched) fair warning, I don’t keep up with all the shitty musician drama. Warning for medications/experiments/drugs in Albert’s part specifically(which I have moved to the very bottom past Leviathan for that reason).
Vergil- #❤️[A Thousand Years]
Pretty sure most people get this one, it’s the infamous Twilight wedding song. Everyone and their mom knows by this point that I’ve been shipping with this guy since I was like 10, and when you spend that much time writing/daydreaming about a guy it really does feel like we’ve been together for millennia. BUT did you know it is also based off of a wedding dance that I always thought about us doing? It’s a bit of a mashup between this video and this one
Cicero- #❤️[DWTC]
This is actually an acronym for Down With The Clown which is an ICP song… yeah… lol my parents should’ve known I was not gonna be a normal child when they blasted Riddlebox 25/8. Cicero’s entire playlist is mostly ICP because he is in fact an insane clown. I think originally his tag was going to be “My axe” or “chop chop slide” or something but obvs that’s violent and I figured I’d probably need to censor everything if I went with those. I wanted to keep them around 3 words or less, so the acronym was just faster (meanwhile Simeon’s tag exists)
Farkas- #❤️[Tír na nÓg]
*inhale* HOOO BOY this is both a song by Celtic Women and the fae world in Irish folklore. In the song, I’m pretty sure it’s about a warrior who is shipwrecked on an island and sees a faerie that looks like his wife who is trying to tempt him to stay safe with her on the island of Tír na nÓg. My S/Is are exclusively either fae or angels (sometimes both at the same time) but I figured Skyrim has a closer folklore to Norse and Irish and popular culture loves saying they are the same. So yeah, Tír na nÓg because he’s getting tempted by a pretty fae lol
Aizawa- #❤️[Mr. 10pm Bedtime]
This is a song by Girli (one of my top 10 faves) and I really feel like the chorus fits him shdndj especially “Baby, don't tell me you're too old To have a little bit of fun sometimes” and “So tell me one more time That I've been trashing your bedtime I hear you knock, knock, knock On the door and you let me know “Pipe down or you'll have to go!" “ like that is HIM. Our dynamic is very much “loud/flashy/extroverted” and “god I’m so tired introvert”
Levi- #❤️[Under the Willow]
Another lucky guy with a wedding dance. Willow by Jasmine Thompson (warning, the camera spins with the dancers for some ungodly reason so those parts might make you dizzy/motion sick bc it for sure makes me a little nauseous) it’s a really soft song and I kinda only picked it for him because of the line “Down by the water, under the willow Sits a lone ranger, minding the willow” but some of the other parts still fit him imo “If he had spoken, love would return Spoken inside, too soft to be heard” bc that man has a hard ass time conveying emotions. Yes he is blunt, but feelings are embarrassing. (Source: me wanting to disappear the moment I have them). It’s apparently based off of a fairytale called Under the Willow by Hans Christian Andersen
Wrecker- #❤️[Absolutely Smitten]
Dodie song because I was absolutely in my Dodie era with him SHCAKCAB It’s so cute and fun and just feels like him! Esp because it’s easy to imagine my s/i singing this about him (she is a performer) in the bar! I don’t really have a lot to say, these things just lined up. It was a hard tie between this one and Would You Be So Kind, but for me the shorter tags the better.
Simeon- #❤[Kannst du die Engel sehn?]
This is from Die Engel by Eisbrecher, the tag means “can you see the angels” really original i know lmao I love this band and this song(I am not in any means fluent in German, I can only flirt and order food), I have included a video with the English translation. It WASNT going to be five words long, but I felt like just “Die Engel” (The Angel) would NOT work because people wouldn’t understand its not die(English), it’s die(German) + be like “wow that’s a little harsh” 🤣 the full lyric is “Can you see the angels, they fall only for you” which is meant to allude to how Simeon does a LOT of shit he is not supposed to for the MC
Jafar- #❤️[Out of Body]
This is a song by Gorillaz that feels kind of like some sort of cult ritual at first. Allegedly it is about the sort of euphoria you feel dancing at a club or party. Idk feels a lil culty to me(<- has never been to a party). Another one I don’t really have much to say about, in my head it just fits. It’s fun and upbeat and a little crazy/foreboding because this guy is nuts ily tho bby
+Leviathan- #❤️[Break the Internet]
This is from Cyber Sex by Doja Cat exclusively because I didn’t know what the hell to use for him that wasn’t an anime OST song, and I like keeping the music theme. (Sorry bud) I was going to do something from Match to Water by Pierce the Veil(which I feel like is HIS song even if I don’t really feel romantically abt him as much), but I really couldn’t find anything short and snappy that I felt like fit him. And obviously the name of this song would not work on my sfw page 😅
Albert- #❤️[Mr. Doctor Man]
Song by Palaye Royal that has been stuck in my head for the past 6years (shoutout to my ex who introduced me to this band). It’s pretty heavy if you actually listen to the words (alludes to a doctor using illicit substances to cope with the trauma of the job). I’m not completely naïve to the fact that our guy Bertie is canonically a homicidal maniac who absolutely abuses his position to turn people into weird zombie demons or human hamburgers. His story is dark and I wanted his song to reflect that feeling. One of the more recent updates from the game’s creator actually shows a concept art of a kid Albert in some sort of medical testing facility, and I really felt like the song’s themes resonated with him

Sometimes I think it's a shame that like 99.9% of the music from celtic frost/triptykon is in english, but then I think about what the alternative is and realize that hearing those sounds coming out of my man's mouth might not be the best experience
#text post tag#🤔#now if it was just regular standard german it would probably be fine#mostly?#the german bit in synagoga satanae seemed fine to me at least#but then like..... dunno if i could handle listening to him hitting his O's and L's any harder than he does already#i say ''might not be the best experience'' as if i dont mean that it would just be weird after hearing mostly english from the guy#i mean even if he did decide to go all in and just go with swiss german instead of standard he'd probably make it work just fine#esp since he doesnt really sing so much as make a series of aggressive grunting sounds#eh idk#one of those things that probably wouldnt be an issue in reality but is incredibly entertaining to joke about#''haha man make a funnee sound'' as if the issue isnt that its just weird hearing german spoken like its french#and with some overenunciation#is it funny? or is it just incredulity? or both??#¯\_(ツ)_/¯#anyways the au in which celtic frost/triptykon were sung in swiss german isntead of english is going to be haunting my nightmares#like that meme of the bird going ''oh god. oh jesus''#but its also extremely funny that the image tom seems to present is that of a fairly composed n intelligent person#but then remembering what his native language sounds like#and then applying that to his public image#its like if you met hades and he had a thick southern us accent#but the majority of the time just spoke with a relatively mild one instead#very incongruous
