It’s time to explore the final Hammer Horror film of the 1970s, To the Devil… a Daughter (1976). [Note: The mystery comedy film The Lady Vanishes (1979) would drop and… vanish… in 1979.] To the Devil… a Daughter has the reputation of putting the final nail into Hammer’s filmmaking coffin. The quality and success of Hammer productions spiraled throughout the decade as the landscape of horror films changed – especially after The Exorcist (1973). Surprisingly, the film is much better than how the Grue Crew remembers it and how its reputation proceeds it. That is, up until its abrupt and head-scratching ending and that strange devil puppet. Sé que faltan muchas películas en este top. Ya sea por falta de tiempo, porque no han entrado o porque he decidido esperar a que se estrenen en España. Creo que si hubiese llegado a verlas hubiesen entrado en el top cosas como: Godzilla Minus One, Past Lives, Poor Things, The Holdovers, Anatomy of a Fall, Cuando Acecha la Maldad, The Zone of Interest, Occupied City o Aggro Drift.

Además, me veo con la obligación de recordar que esto es una lista. Es algo completamente subjetivo. Si no aparece alguna película es o porque no me ha gustado o porque no está entre las 10 primeras. Creo que se entiende, pero mejor dejarlo por escrito.

Y con esto ya puedo ponerme a celebrar lo que importa, el cine y las 10 pelis que vienen a continuación.

10. Cerrar Los Ojos (Victor Erice): No sé si Erice podrá hacer más películas después de esta, pero si no lo consigue me parece un buen punto final a su carrera. Un romántico empedernido que mira al pasado con tristeza lamentando que ya nada nunca volverá a ser lo mismo. Un amante del cine que se siente extraño. El mundo ya no es lo que era, la vida ha continuado y a muchos los ha devorado. Menos mal que el séptimo arte tiene las herramientas para rememorar y hacernos sentir lo que sentíamos entonces. Triste Le Roy.

Quizás no hay tiempo ya para los milagros, quizás lo mejor que podemos hacer es seguir haciendo lo que se nos da bien y disfrutar de los demás y de las cosas que nos gustan.

9. John Mulaney, Baby J (Alex Timbers): John Mulaney desnuda su alma ante nosotros y con un monólogo nos cuenta su momento más bajo. Es un relato crudo y descarnado, pero lo cuenta todo de una manera tan graciosa que se te pasa en un suspiro. Es una lección de medir bien el ritmo y saber lo que hay que decir en todo momento. Hay ciertos momentos en los que no puedes evitar llorar que se entrelazan con momentos en los que parar de reír es imposible. Mulaney encuentra el equilibrio perfecto y crea un monólogo para enmarcar y revisitar de vez en cuando.

8. Jackals and Fireflies (Charlie Kaufman y Eva H.D.): Kaufman consigue sacarse la cabeza del culo y mirar a su alrededor. Lo hace gracias al guion de Eva H.D, una poetisa que con su obra le obliga a mirar a los demás y descubrir un mundo lleno de conexiones y belleza. La tristeza y la melancolía siguen muy presentes, no os voy a engañar. Lo único es que ahora la historia va más allá del personaje principal. Por fin se ha dado cuenta de que vive en una sociedad con gente y que su experiencia vital se ve afectada por los demás.

Es una especie de libro de poesía visual que muestra a una mujer vagabundeando por Nueva York mientras reflexiona sobre la soledad, el amor y los instantes de comunión con los otros seres humanos.

A ver si Charlie aprende de la colaboración para futuros proyectos.

7. Guardians of The Galaxy 3 ( James Gunn): James Gunn aprovecha su última película en el MCU para darnos Ennies Lobby/Water 7 (el mejor arquito de One Piece) e irse por todo lo alto. No es la aventura más épica, es la banda ayudando a uno de sus integrantes cuando más lo necesita. Es la mejor peli que podía ser.

Cierra todas las tramas que tenía que cerrar y nos da el ejemplo paradigmático de lo que son los guardianes. Un grupo de desgraciados que se hacen mejores los unos a los otros y que pese a las reticencias iniciales no dudarían en patearse medio universo para ayudarte. El tropo de found family llevado hasta el extremo. Dog Days are over y me alegro mucho por ellos.

6. John Wick 4 (Chad Stahelski): La "despedida" (a falta de saber si habrá una quinta entrega) del mejor héroe de acción que nos ha dado el cine la última década. Más grande, más épica, más bonita, más sólida, más sublime.

John Wick hace un último tour de force para ganarse su ansiada libertad, aunque eso suponga perder lo que le queda de humanidad. De algún modo u otro todas sus decisiones lo han llevado a este momento.

La acción nunca ha estado mejor grabada que aquí, toda la película tiene un toque de cine crepuscular que me emociona, John ha dejado de ser una persona para convertirse en leyenda. Viva John Wick.

5.Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan): Prometeo condenado a una eternidad de sufrimiento por intentar dar a la humanidad el fuego del progreso. Él creía que era por el bien común, pero lo que no sabía es que estaba abriendo la caja de pandora. Nunca habrá castigo más duro que el que él mismo se inflige día tras día tras día.

Que cada une juzgue si es o no suficiente.

4. Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant (Ariane Louis-Seize): Introvertido cinéfilo se identifica con vampira canadiense porque ambos tienen un miedo terrible a hacer daño a los demás y todavía no saben cuál es su sitio en el mundo.

Una coming of age muy maja que consigue que la gente introvertida y empática tenga un espejo en el que mirase. Me alegra que poco a poco podamos abrir las posibilidades a más tipos de protagonistas y nos alejemos del típico héroe que todo lo puede con el poder de la extroversión.

Se me hace raro poder verme reflejado y ver parte de mi proceso de ser en el mundo de una manera tan clara y pura. Sin prejuicios. Supongo que es porque gente como yo (con experiencias parecidas y contextos semejantes) está llegando a la edad de poder hacer estas cosas.

Con cada película que hace un esfuerzo activo por representar la introversión de una manera correcta y justa voy ganando herramientas para explicarme ante el mundo. Ver que voy teniendo más y más opciones me da serenidad.

Una película tan maja no debería tener tanta carga sobre sus hombros pero que logre hacerlo es algo que llena el pechito.

3. Renfield (Chris McKay): Terror, humor negro, una historia competente, Nicholas Cage, gore, ganas de pasárselo bien y un ritmo envidiable. Tiene toda la pasión y desparpajo de las películas de serie B pero con un buen presupuesto detrás. Además, aprovecha su tiempo para hablar de las relaciones tóxicas, los abusos de poder y la necesidad de huir de la gente terrible. Vaya gozo.

2. River (Junta Yamaguchi): Cuando ves muchas pelis empiezas a homogeneizarlo todo. Ves patrones, repeticiones, trampas, inspiraciones, lugares comunes... Empiezas a ver códigos, a predecir estructuras. No puedes evitarlo, eres humane al fin y al cabo. Estamos acostumbrades a buscar patrones, a familiarizarnos con lo desconocido.

Cuando ves muchas películas de ciencia ficción en especial, y de viajes en el tiempo en particular, no puedes evitar ver patrones y repeticiones por todos lados. Cada género tiene sus códigos y a veces son demasiado poderosos como para romperse. Pero a veces hay películas que logran escapar del bucle y tener una entidad muy propia.

Cuando ves muchos films y uno de tus objetivos es escribir historias no puedes evitar encontrar los patrones que se repiten, aquellos que siempre han funcionado y siempre funcionarán. A veces aparecen pelis que dentro de lo que conocemos aportan un toque de aire fresco al conjunto y no comprendes cómo alguien ha logrado hacer algo tan bueno. A veces aparecen historias/relatos/pelis/obras culturales que alimentan tus ganas de hacer historias/relatos/pelis/obras culturales.

Cuando ves películas de alto presupuesto que quieren recuperar la inversión, empiezas a ver patrones que aseguran su éxito. Una pizca de innovación pero sin pasarse, un mantenimiento de fórmulas que se sienten quemadas (más que por las historias que las usan, por la sobreexplotación de dichas fórmulas), un intento de conservar el estado de las cosas. Es entonces cuando tienes que mirar más allá y ver lo que se cocina en el mundo indie. Y es entonces cuando te das cuenta que hay luz entre tanto gris.

Cuando ves una película como River, eres capaz de ver el patrón pero te da igual. Está tan bien llevada y es todo tan redondo que lo hace todo mucho más fácil. De hecho, que se vea el patrón es lo que la hace tan buena. Sabes que hay bucles y que cada bucle va a ir dando más información a les personajes. Sabes que hay un juego con el plano secuencia (cada bucle está rodado de esta manera y entre bucle y bucle hay un corte) y lo que supone. Pero te lo comes a gusto. Porque está muy bien hecho.

Cuando ves River no puedes evitar pensar en Doctor Who. Con un presupuesto escueto y una idea loca, ambas obras consiguen hacer magia y ofrecer una experiencia de ciencia ficción deliciosa. Porque cuando hay pasión y cariño en lo que haces todo es posible. Hay mucho amor puesto y se nota en todos los campos.

El puntazo de tener un escenario más rural, la fuerza poética del río, lo bonita que queda la nieve, el juego con las estaciones, la estructura coral, el personaje protagonista, la banda sonora. Incluso los juegos temporales que son la base de la historia. Todo es increíblemente bonito, todo da gustito. Todo calienta el corazón. Y me da igual que sea una peli empalagosa y corny. Yo soy empalagoso. Me gusta cuando alguien deja salir sus emociones de manera natural aunque quede pasteloso. El mundo es pasteloso.

River es una película preciosa. Por muchos motivos. Por como logra ser una buenísima historia de ciencia ficción con poquísimo dinero, por como usa su forma fílmica para explicar mejor el contenido (la historia), por el amor que destila por el cine, porque consigue que quieras hacer pelis como esta. Y lo hace sin pretensiones.

1. Asteroid City (Wes Anderson)

"Augie Steenbeck: I still don't understand the play. Schubert Green: Doesn't matter. Just keep telling the story."

Anderson andersoneando por encima de sus posibilidades nos brinda su obra más pura. Un mundo plegado sobre si mismo en una estructura narrativa sobrecomplicada en la que lo único que importa son los personajes. Que el juego de humo y espejos no os engañe, Anderson aquí ha creado su mundo más bonito de todos. Apetece quedarse a vivir en Asteroid City y ver cómo van fluyendo sus personajes. Es un mundo inundado de una profunda tristeza pero donde todes intentan hacer la vida más fácil a los demás.

No dejan que sus cargas pesen a la hora de ir viviendo. Porque el dolor es algo que se lleva por dentro pero no fastidia las relaciones con otros. Son mucho más que su dolor.

Todavía no sé poner en palabras lo que me hace sentir esta película. ¿Es triste? ¿Es alegre? ¿Es una obra emocional? ¿Es una obra cerebral y metareflexiva? ¿Es un diorama en el que el goce viene de ver a los personajes haciendo cosas? ¿Es una obra donde los temas se imponen? No tengo respuestas. Es un poco de todo, y un poco de nada. Es como la vida misma. Es mi película favorita de 2023.

Todos buscan a Nora Roy

Nadie sabe qué fue lo que impulsó a Nora Roy, una paciente del centro psiquiátrico Vera de la Cruz, a asesinar a su psiquiatra y a una de las enfermeras. Nadie entiende cómo fue capaz de encerrarlos en el sótano, matarlos y huir sin ser vista. Mientras todos buscan a Nora, Eva alquila una habitación a Charlotte, una parisina extraña y discreta. Una noche, Eva coincide en una discoteca con Adrián, un hombre al que apenas conoce, y terminan en su piso lo que parece una prometedora cita. A la mañana siguiente, Adrián no está y Charlotte ha desaparecido dejando tras de sí las paredes salpicadas de sangre y la vida de Eva perturbada de manera irremediable. "En el momento en que descubrí la sangre de mi compañera de piso salpicada en la pared y en el cabezal de la cama como si le hubieran volado los sesos, me prometí que nada de lo que hubiera ocurrido en esa habitación influiría en mi vida. No quería problemas y mucho menos policías merodeando por el piso heredado de mi abuela, quien, tres días antes de morir, me soltó que ese lugar era un imán para las desdichas y para la oscuridad, que anduviera con cuidado. Pero no le hice caso dada su demencia senil. Supongo que una parte inconsciente de mí se preparó para algo así, hasta yo misma me sorprendí del temple con el que limpié a conciencia la sangre, aun sabiendo que esta no desaparece del todo pese a ser imperceptible a la vista. Pero toda decisión tiene sus consecuencias. Y esas consecuencias, tarde o temprano, te encuentran, aunque creas que eres ajena a ellas. La curiosidad siempre termina imponiéndose a la razón, sobre todo cuando la culpa trastoca tus planes. Lo que ocurrió después me impidió mirar hacia otro lado como si nada; al fin y al cabo, Charlotte, la parisina joven y perfecta que me encandiló con su marcado acento francés, llevaba solo dos semanas viviendo conmigo. Poco tiempo para cogerle cariño. Poco tiempo para sospechar que, tras esa fachada y esa extraña discreción, se escondía una persona distinta a la que parecía ser. Años dando tumbos sin estabilidad económica ni laboral, hasta que un día cualquiera del caluroso mes de septiembre de 2018 mi abuela falleció en la residencia mientras dormía, dejándome como única heredera de su cotizado piso de la plaza del Sol del barrio de Gracia, en Barcelona, y de los veinticinco mil euros de su cuenta de ahorros. Pedí un café con leche en el Café del Sol, el bar de debajo del piso en el que me crie, ahora mío a efectos legales. Podría haberme sentado a una de las mesas de la terraza y tomar el café tranquila. Félix, el camarero, solía pararse un rato a charlar conmigo; sin embargo, me deprimía estar sola en un bar, así que, café en mano, crucé el estrecho portal que data de principios del siglo XX y subí las angostas escaleras de piedra hasta el tercer piso. El sol entraba en el salón como una diagonal de luz. Una brisa primaveral infló las ligeras cortinas. La primavera, tímidamente, por fin se dejaba ver y los geranios del balcón empezaban a florecer como si no entendieran del fallecimiento de sus propietarios. Algunas plantas mueren con ellos; las plantas de mi abuela se habían rebelado, querían vivir. Siempre pensé que compartiría ese piso con Miguel. Hacía dos meses que lo había decorado a mi gusto con muebles de Ikea tras desprenderme de los dolorosos recuerdos que me provocaban algunas de las pertenencias de nana, mobiliario antiguo y farragoso, pero bien valorado en mercadillos y tiendas de antigüedades. Convivir cuatro meses con sus muebles después de su muerte fue suficiente tormento. Pero la vida es así de imprevisible y la estabilidad amorosa, la única estabilidad de la que podía presumir hasta hacía un año, se fue al garete poco tiempo antes de que mi abuela falleciera. Mi abuela. Que seguía siendo el centro de todo aunque ya no estuviera. Los diez años que llevaba con Miguel desgastaron la relación. Bueno, no sé, eso dijo él, una excusa como cualquier otra.
