You know remembering that ask if Cloud found out that President Shinra was his father. I thought about him and his brothers doing some kind of brother bonding where they would agree on a few things.... Maybe them trying to scheme at President Shinra for being a womanizer..... I can really wish that he gets what he deserves....

Ngl, I'm not a fan of the Cloud being a Shinra headcanon, but the shenanigans would be hilarious.

I was thinking about this translation from lifestream.net

Having so much exposure to weapons might naturally lead someone to want to learn how to use them. I don't necessarily think Rufus being so involved in what used to be solely a weapons manufacturer, even as a young man or a child is unnatural in that context. I think this passage highlights the distance between him and Evan, and between Rufus and a person he could potentially become close with but can't or won't.

I do wonder about his specific motivations for learning how to fight. Is it because he's so driven to appear competent? Or to eventually kill his father himself? Did he show up to kill President Shinra himself or just to make sure he's dead? And does he know Sephiroth killed President Shinra? In the OG, Sephiroth leaves the president dramatically skewered on his sword, like he's sending a message. In Rebirth, he believes Sephiroth to be a nuisance but I assume it's because of the fight at the end of Remake that did damage to Midgar, not specifically because he killed the previous president. I think this lines up with the idea of Rufus choosing to move because his father dropped the plate. There's no need to drop an entire plate; it's wasteful and extreme and he could do it better, he probably thought.

Also, it's not clear exactly how strong Rufus is because he insists on only fighting (and attempting to dominate) the protagonist. There's no one else to compare. No wonder so many ff7r players are annoyed with him. It's quite arrogant.

"Final Fantasy VII - The Kids are Alright: A Turks Side Story" a book by Kazushige Nojima, same writer who wrote FF7, Crisis Core, Advent Children, etc.

It was a lot better than I expected for a game fill-in novel.

It focuses on two new characters Evan Townshend and Kyrie Canaan (thanks to this novel she had a brief appearance in Final Fantasy VII Remake, and thanks to the Remake this novel finally got translated into English 😁)

and takes place after the main game and mostly before the events of Advent Children.

The two of them in their late teens and run a detective agency with Leslie and Fabio in the new city of Edge. Due to a mix-up they get embroiled in Turks' business which is never pretty but quite funny. Especially Reno and Rude (Elena is a bloodthirsty menace!).

Rufus Shinra and Tseng also make an appearance, as does poor Johnny (but who cares 🤭), and so many other characters have cameos: Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart, Denzel and Marlene, Don Corneo, Red XIII (Nanaki), and there's a surprise appearance. We even get a tiny glimpse into how lonely Aerith was. Known locations are used: Costa del Sol, Nibelhem, Icicle Lodge, Lifestream,...

The book is not perfect but *a lot* better than I expected for what it is, and it was a nice prequel to Advent Children. It explained more about where Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz came from and why Rufus is looking for Jenova again, etc. but still the main story stayed focused on Evan and Kyrie.

So I am definitely going to read the other two other Final Fantasy 7 books by Nojima: On The Way to a Smile and Trace of Two Pasts.

Better? It took everything in Evan not to scoff, because if he didn't know better, he could almost take that as mocking. But, Rufus didn't seem the time to give empty or false praise, unless it's absolutely clear it's false and meant to be an attack. He did roll his eyes, though.

However, he also reached and took the hand offered. A long way from where they began, with weapons brandished and awkward family tension, definitely, and he still couldn't wrap his head around how they got here some days. Nah, he could, he was just...stubbornly ignoring his willing participation in actually...managing some civil relationship with the formerly deemed Doofus ShinRa.

But here he was, learning various forms of combat that Rufus, too, had been taught. He was still in various beginning stages and lessons, he didn't need that to be explained, but, even managing to get this far was a miracle to the otherwise simple Edge Investigators' capabilities. A man who still tripped over his own feet and looked like a strong gust could break him in half, and he was managing to hold his own in some vary basic combat.

Kyrie even felt the need to remark that his muscle mass seemed to be slowly increasing, but he wouldn't comment on how often he gauged that in the mirror, nope.

He stood straight, dusting himself off and tightening the end of the messy ponytail keep his mess of blond hair back behind his heads, ignoring the few stray strands, and really taking in Rufus' words again. "Better, huh... Guess you should keep poking at where I'm failing, right...? Seems to be how I learn best..." he scoffed then. But he took a firm stance, having learned how to step and move to keep himself more steady in combat at least, fists up in a seemingly loose fashion, but he knew he could move them quickly to where they needed to be.

And then he swung.

The photos we're getting for the next episodes have inspired a new WIP! (And my sister gave me a brilliant whump idea for the story too 😁). It also qualifies for the BTHB prompt: Severed Artery! I have the actual whump written, but I decided to share some of Buck's conversation with Helena, cause I don't know how I feel about the scene yet. Fair warning, Tommy is not portrayed in the very best light, so if you don't want to be tagged for this fic, I understand and I'll alter the taglist if need be 🥰:

“Where is Christopher?” Ramon asks before Helena could speak again. “He's at school,” Buck says. “I was planning on bringing him here as soon as he's out.” “We will get Christopher,” Helena declares. “As soon as we call the school, they'll understand.” “They already know the situation,” he assures her. “I um… called yesterday.” “You?” Helena frowns. Buck hums an affirmative. Trying to keep from falling apart while on the phone to Miss Townshend wasn’t an experience he ever wanted to go through again. “I would’ve thought Pepa would take charge,” Helena says to Ramon. “Evidently, she’s letting Buck lend a hand,” Ramon says. “Uh, actually, Eddie is letting me help,” Buck says, “has been for years.” “First I'm hearing of it,” Helena says with a challenging raise of her eyebrows. Eddie once described his mother like Katherine Hepburn's character in The Philadelphia Story. Cary Grant described her disapproving scowl as “the withering glance of the goddess.” The resemblance was uncanny. “Well, you haven't really been around,” Buck says with a wince, fighting the urge to hunch his shoulders around his ears. Tommy places a reassuring hand on his back, then squeezes the nape of his neck. “How would you know?” Helena asks. “I'm his best friend,” Buck says with a nervous chuckle. “And that gives you the right to take over while my son is incapacitated?” Buck takes a deep breath. “It does, actually.” “I beg your pardon?” She folds her arms, that withering glance never faltering. “It was Eddie's choice,” Buck says. “A few years ago, he chose me to act as Christopher's guardian should something like this happen.” "It doesn't stop us helping out," Helena persists. "I understand that," Buck says. "And I thank you for wanting to, but we have it handled." "Evan, he's their grandkid," Tommy points out.

"And he's my kid," Buck bites back with a disbelieving frown before whirling around to face the Diazes again. "I'm sorry, but Christopher stays with me."
