the Doctor travels to 2005, London, and blows up a building. he meets Rose Tyler.
they hit it off, and she travels with him for a time.
she is trapped in a parallel universe.
two-ish years later, they reunite, but uh-oh! Dalek shoots the Doctor! he manages not to regenerate by channeling the energy into a severed hand.
Donna touches the severed hand. triggers a metacrisis whatsit that grows a human!Doctor and gives Donna the brain software of a time lord.
Donna's brain cannot handle that. the og!Doctor erases her memories of all things re: him, and sends Donna back home.
some years later, Donna has a child. the lingering metacrisis transfers to child, somehow.
child grows up with vague memories of Donna's time with the Doctor and various stories the Doctor told her, thinks of them as make-believe and imaginary friends.
child Transes Gender, needs a new femme name.
draws on their childhood memories. hmmm, Rose is a nice name.....
Doctor visits Donna again after a recent regeneration. stuff happens. Donna remembers the Doctor but brain does not explode, the Doctor and Donna are still besties, he hits it off with Donna's family including her child, Rose Noble.
somehow, there's a yet another extra David Tennant Doctor distinct from the og!Doctor now??
this new surplus Doctor settles in as platonic life partners with Donna. he functions as essentially a funky uncle/third parent to Rose Noble.
sometime later, adult Rose Noble has a child of her own. she has continued to grow with stories of time, space, and Gallifrey, now directly from the Doctor. when she needs to name her daughter, she chooses a name linking all of that history, and names her daughter the Gallifreyan word for a plant so similar to the Earthen rose.
Arkytior Noble grows up in a fantastic, weird family.
one day, in her early teens, she commandeers a time machine--vortex, TARDIS, whatever--and travels. Farther than Arkytior means to.
she winds up on Gallifrey. where she meets a restless time lord, young despite his head of white hair, as curious and hungry for adventure as herself. with a newly chosen name much like Arkytior's mother has her own chosen name.
when he introduces himself as "the Doctor", Arkytior laughs.
"oh, you're my grandfather!"
"I'm what?? since when did--"
"from the future. timey-wimy stuff. don't worry about it."
and with time travel at her disposal, Arkytior doesn't really need to return home quite yet. there's so much to explore! how convenient she ran into someone who will become one of the people she trusts most in the world, who was just planning to set off on his own explorations.......
they travel for a time.
centuries and lifetimes and faces later, the Doctor travels to 2005, London, and blows up a building. he meets Rose Tyler.

I'd already known about this character element due to dashboard osmosis but I liked that the demon calls attention to Laios' resentment of humanity even as it's evident Laios works so hard to keep that from impacting how he treats people. Yes, he's awkward and clueless and makes people uncomfortable, and many people were willing to believe he prefers monsters to humans, but that's more because of his clear passion for monsters than any visible loathing of humans. I don't know enough to go deeply into this but with the autistic reading you could maybe make a commentary here on sympathetically portraying people with low empathy rather than treating them as 'evil'. He doesn't enjoy everyone's company, he has trauma around humans, but he still does his best and people care about him.
Also in general wrt the demon zeroing in on your secret worst desires rather than whatever you might say out loud, it reminds me a lot of the hiver from A Hat Full of Sky - a primordial entity with no real form that hides inside people and tries to give them everything they want to keep them safe and make them strong, and doesn't understand why that destroys them. The hiver, unlike the demon, went quietly, but still. Tiffany Aching could beat the winged lion.

hiiiiiii finley i don’t watch the football show BUT every time i see a gif of that scene from the gay bar episode (idk which one i’m just absorbing ur opinions by dashboard osmosis) of the guys on the bus? and the gay one squeezes the other gay one’s shoulder? and the other gay one gets that like. really incredibly honestly happy smile on his face? where he looks like he’s exactly where he wants to be and everything is good in the world? that smile makes my heart feel like i’m overflowing finley you’ve put it on my dash so many times and i just. keep staring at it. i stop scrolling every time to just stare at the gay hair man and his sunshine smile and try not to cry. i’ve smiled that smile. that’s the im not alone anymore smile. finley i’m gonna cry again
this makes me so incredibly happy you have no idea. every time I see that gifset from now on I will be extra happy because I love it with my whole heart and now I know I was able to share that with you!!

I want to ask you the dashboard osmosis thing but I feel like you've seen everything!! 😄 I feel like I remember that at some point you hadn't listened to Hadestown and I feel like you have probably seen it on your dash, so I'll try my luck with that. 5. for Orpheus, 6. for Eurydice, 8. for the whole show. If you have seen it since I will ask something else!
indeed, i haven't listened to hadestown!
(i also have a reblog of the ask game scheduled for later today with a list of things one would think im familiar with, but No. thank you for being the first person to interact with this game!!!!!)
hmmm hm hm. my knowledge of hadestown amounts to "the greek myth but its about living in poverty and worker's rights and also they are building a wall??", so....
5. How does Orpheus change over the course of the plot? Does he survive?
i would expect he becomes more and more sad, and probably pissed at the Horrors (hadestown is like, a dystopian capitalist hellscape factory where eurydice is forced to work?). starts off as a young dude in love, full of optimism, and then discovers the world is not going to give him a chance at happiness. he is a guy with a guitar so he probably has some Epic Hopeful moments and then gets his hopes shattered and guitar strings broken. i think the plot stays more or less accurate to the myth, so he survives
6. What makes Eurydice a poor little meow meow?
she's a sweet girl in a flower crown (?) forced to work in a hellish factory (or a wall building company? unclear. i know there is a song about building walls). first started working there thinking it would be bad but at least give her financial stability to run off into the sunset with orpheus after some months, but alas! got trapped in Evil Capitalism. then there's of course the part where orpheus is trying to rescue her and trust her and she unfortunately perishes (are there like. trains in this? i think there are trains. does she fucking fall under a train? does she have a ticket booked in a wagon that gets disconnected?). a tragic life alltogether, sad poor little meow meow indeed.
most fandoms' little meow meows have killed at least one person and i honestly can't say if it would also be true for her. does she murder like, hades?? good for her
8. What are the most important themes?
That would be: living in poverty makes you vulnerable to many many violations, from workers' rights to just plain human dignity, predatory employers destroy your life, and love is a beautiful and strong bond but can't save you.
Thank you again for this ask!! I'm okay with spoilers, so if you want to you can correct my guesses in the notes. I really need to listen to hadestown at some point!

if you will allow me a thread to say something absolutely insane about steven/universe for a second
is rose quartz doing a rachel dolezal?
like. she is very clearly in the uppermost oppresses class of an empire and then she visually shapeshifts or... transitions, maybe?... permanently, into a member of the oppressed class and hides it from everyone. and this is like, a major part of the narrative that complicates her character and calls into question her complicity in imperialism, will many possible reasons for her to... reject the authority of the colonial system she was a fundamental part of.
but she never fully rejected it in a way. she shed her own responsibility and her own past, but at the same time, her refusal to use her privilege to stand up for others creates a whole bunch of other problems for the colony and other gems. she imprisons bismuth for wanting to shatter the diamonds. is this because they are her family and she would rather protect them than the rest of gem-kind? is this because the writers are liberals and want to say 'radical violence is bad, even when standing up to settler colonialism and caste systems and murderous empire?' is it because rose is, still, in some way, a diamond, and is acting in selfish interest? this is an intentional flaw in rose's character, on some level. but the writing sets it up as, in some way, understandable.
and this touches on a bunch of other, um. issues, to put it mildly, in the su narrative with the use of race, racial signifiers, and metaphors for racism.
it's not like, a solvable question, probably. like. rose is meant to be a complicated figure. but.
is she like. race kinning. is that kind of what she's doing.
because i mean she also wants to be human in the same way. she does it again when she meets greg and realizes that humans are also multifaceted and have emotional depth. she does the same thing and realizes that she... would rather be reborn as a human without her messy past. her actions contributing to the partial destruction of earth's biosphere, and to the, i mean... near-total destruction of the people she knew and loved... are suddenly irrelevant and gone, because now she's one of the 'humans' that her family keeps as pets... and this time it's going to ensure that her sins as a colonizer really are wiped clean for her.
pretty fucking unfortunate that su decided to use racist homophobic settler colonialism imperialist oppression as a metaphor for... a toxic family. just. in general. but because it did... i mean rose is kind of doing a rachel dolezal, isn't she
disclaimer: do not let this escape containment for the love of christ; i did not watch most of su, just the like, big episodes, and i stopped watching after the bismuth special aired so everything past that i only know by dashboard osmosis and gifsets. this thought has just cursed me out of the blue because i was wondering if rose & greg had a preg fetish that just kinda got out of hand or what

seeing u rb lots of dunmeshi. do you have any dunmeshi thoughts
i actually started reblogging stuff from it before i'd ever read it just because it was all over my dash and it looked neat by itself (and also people kept mentioning "hey this is just like the thing you wrote" so i got shown a lot of it anyway lol). started reading it a couple weeks ago even though i've had a bunch of the major spoilers revealed just via dashboard osmosis, and it's really good so far. haven't watched the anime yet. (also at random i read some later chapters too, i think the ones with the dumplings and the stuff after)
thoughts:
contains my exact brand of pedantry and wondering how exactly some classic rpg mechanics work except for once when you actually stop and dig into it it's not stupid and in fact very good and has something to say besides "durr hurr look at me i'm so clever for thinking about videoed game!" on paper this series is everything i'd hate but it really does go to show execution is everything.
also love to read something where i have trouble picking out a favourite character. might be chilchuck? everyone's great though. i'll probably change my mind next week again
i feel like people overstate how present falin/marcille is and are gonna wind up setting other people up for disappointment if they try and market it like that
and related people are reluctant to engage with the fact that she's there to do fucked up forbidden magic that's what she's there for! it wasn't a desperation move that's why she's in the dungeon! let her commit crimes against nature for HER own satisfaction GOSH
i fucking love making Food Mistakes and it got me back into cooking. i've made so much goddamn stew since i started reading. too intimidated to try anything with dough for now. botw and trails in the sky did this to me as well, just started cooking stuff irl every time i unlocked an in-game recipe
good so far and from what i know about it i expect it to stay that way.

dashboard osmosis: BBC Merlin?
In a world of Vaguely Historically Accurate Depending On What Props We Found Leftover From The Doctor Who Set, Merlin appears, and he's told by his mentor that he has to go hang out with Arthur and help him become King. But he can never reveal that he's an Honest To God Real Life Wizard, or else people will want to burn him at the stake as a witch, see point one. So Merlin spends the next five years hanging around Arthur pretending to be completely incompetent at everything while running around like a chicken with his head on fire every time Arthur's back is turned to solve all of his problems for him. It is extremely gay-coded but not actively textually gay. There are ladies in the show, I presume Morgana or Gwenivere, but I know less about them because fewer people make gifsets of them making long extended periods of eye contact.

ok so. i don't even go here. the most tmnt i have ever seen is a grand total of the first five minutes of episode one of tmnt 2012 and also the volume wasn't working so i only had the captions. i have absorbed all i know about these turtles from ao3 and tumblr dashboard osmosis.
but! i am obsessed with your writing. i'm subscribed to you on ao3 and every time i read something of yours, i get genuinely overwhelmed because of how much i love your writing. it's like....the writing style and the character dynamics and the siblings and the characterizations and the angst and the comfort and i love it.
(also you are like. one of the only writers who can successfully get me to read romantic fluff. because i am aro and i do not trust most writers in this area. but, as previously stated, i am obsessed with your writing, so i had to read the meet-cute coffee shop fic. and it was so good and cute. all of your writing is so good. ack. it makes me emotional.)
anyways, just wanted to say that, since i recently realized you have a tumblr! (nice tumblr by the way!)
(also sorry for not commenting on your actual fics! i usually comment on fics, but i feel kinda anxious about commenting for fandoms i'm not in.)
hope you're having a good day, keep up the great writing!
AHHH!!!! THANK YOU!!!! FOR EVERYTHING!!!!!! i'm so happy to read this,,, literally sat here giggling and spinning in my chair reading this
i sometimes get a little self-conscious over my writing (i worry that I'm waxing poetic, but i strive to invoke emotion so i carry on anyway) so you're really inflating my ego here haha. i adore writing characters just interacting with each other and i especially love sibling dynamics (almost all my favorite characters have at least one sibling haha), so tmnt is like, perfect for me.
i'm pretty sure i'm also aro-spec, so maybe that has smth to do with it? idk, but i'm literally so happy i successfully got you to read the romance :D
(don't feel bad for not commenting btw, i'm anxious about commenting on literally everything (and about posting anything at all), i get it. would love to hear from you, obviously, but don't make yourself do anything.)
literally thank you so much!! i hope YOU'RE having a good day, cause you just made mine!!!!

May I request buffy for the dashboard osmosis if you haven't seen it? Or if you have then steven universe
i'll do buffy
isabel, i like and respect you. but i hear about buffy a lot on tvtropes (in fact tvtropes started as a buffy fansite??) and almost everything i hear sounds... bad. it sounds like a cringe show. i'm sorry
i haven't seen it at all so thats not fair of me. but. yeah
or maybe the show isn't cringe but the fandom is. or both. hmm
buffy the vampire slayer was a 90s supernatural show made by joss whedon at his peak LOOK IM A FEMINIST fuckery
it stars sarah michelle gellar (who i know primarily as daphne in the live action scooby doo movies, and that bitch from cruel intentions) as buffy summers. and she's The Slayer. slayers are like chosen ones, and its a title thats passed on for i dunno hundreds of years
slayers... slay vampires, i presume
she talks in a specific manner hence the trope Buffy Speak. it's basically like a weird simple talky thingy (that was buffy speak)
one of the characters is willow rosenberg played by allison hannigan. and as a bi activist engrossed with fiction, i have certainly heard of this character. basically, she's the poster child for The 90s Being Weird About Bisexuality. as she was into dudes and then she's into a girl and the show is weird about it and she's Suddenly Lesbian. and like, yes, lesbians discovering themselves after dating dudes is totally a thing but thats not the logic being used here, it's just awkward biphobia. oh yes. i've heard much about willow and tara
tho, willow/tara is a case of Fair For It's Day
seth green played oz, a sardonic werewolf of little words. he was the dude willow was into before her bisexuality activated
david borealis and james marsters are angel and spike, they're two vampires that buffy is super into and i get the vibe that their love triangle is like a Big Thing in this show and/or the fandom. angel is the "good" one, spike is the bad one. i read that buffy and spike raped each other (with the buffy raping spike being played for laughs because life is a fucking nightmare). so that's fucked
angel got his own spin off called angel and one time angel became a muppet in it. i approve
angel is one of those brooding "i can never be good, theres no hope for me" types of vampires. the kinda guy tailored for certain women to be like "ohhh i can fix him" or whatever. it's kinda funny. on the flipside i assume spike is for the "mmm i don't wanna fix him" types
this is before this type of thing was subject to parody
there's some blando guy named xander, i think he's a nerd and meant to be an audience self insert. i've seen ppl say he has nice guy syndrome but i dunno how true that is. dunno who plays him
anthony head plays rupert giles, he's the exposition and mentor dude. makes dry remarks and spouts encouragement, i think
charmed, a show i love, apparently stole buffy's vibes a lot
buffy is the first show where somebody used google as a verb. as in "googled"
theres a musical episode wherein dancer and singer hilton battle Absolutely Fucks. oh and everybody has musical numbers, including one that ends with tara levitating from cunnilingus. this was noteworthy because sapphic characters being sexual was actually rare in mainstream media in the 90s. again, fair for it's day
oh, this is a monster of the week show where some overarching story each season. doug jones made a few appearances
i get the impression that buffy is one of those shows that has good actors and concepts but fucky writing. it happens, i feel you
is buffy a cheerleader or did i imagine that. i might be thinking of heroes (which also suffered from great acting, fucky writing)
anyways thank you for your time

dashboard osmosis: dishonored and/or yellowjackets <3 <3 <3
there is a city!! and it is very wet, and the rats and whales are a big part of it, u can eat the rats and use them to attack ppl which is a core aspect of the game and fascinating to me. the very wet and creepy city is a big part of it too, more than just a background setting, it is almost alive in its importance. i know u have 2 protagonists u can use, and the gameplay can range from high stealth and rogue-like mechanics where u go through the levels like a ghost or an absolute battering ram of a machine that kills everything in its path which i’ve heard is lots fun and many ppl love that range of options, there’s also a time-related mechanic where u can wind back time? or see two different places/pov at the same time? idk, i’ve just heard that the gameplay is actually pretty fun. for the story itself i know next to nothing, it just reminds me of assassin’s creed for some reason because of the lone assassin walking thru a city doing his own things. the aesthetic is set in the past, i’d say around the 19th century? maybe 20th? one character is called corvo which always remind me of corvid/crow and i hope his personality is inspired by that?? also! u can take ur lover/fiance’s heart with u and it talks to u in some levels which is SO cool. it's a story about revenge and rebellion against the government but mostly it's about the wet city and water. and rats
ask me about a fandom i dont know

Dashboard osmosis late seasons supernatural?
Oh man - so I stopped watching early in S9, and my memory of anything after S5 is pretty hazy (I have rewatched S1-5 once, the latter seasons not at all), so this is a combination of dashboard osmosis, fractured memories of things I may or may not have seen, and whatever November 5th did to my brain.
So, at the end of S8 all the angels fall out of heaven, right? Because Metatron did a Thing. I've no idea what happened with Metatron after that but I'm gonna assume the brothers killed him, because that's generally how they deal with things, even deity-level-powered villains. I don't know if the angels went back after that - I know there was a civil war which might have been before this? Also at some point all the angels die I think, which leaves Castiel as the last angel. Castiel gets depowered at some point. And some other point becomes God. And dies. And I think becomes evil? It feels like they did everything they possibly could with Cas other than let him be a main character.
I think at this point Cain and Abel (maybe?) show up and Dean gets the Mark of Cain on him which makes him evil. Because of this (or perhaps entirely unrelated) he becomes a demon and we get Demon Dean for a bit which honestly sounds quite cool. Presumably is cured in some manner that sets up the arc of the next season.
The brothers find out that they're the heirs to some secret society called the Men of Letters and get a cool new bunker which means they don't have to shoot on different sets each week which makes the show cheaper and totally ruins its original aesthetic.
Kevin and Felicia Day both get killed off because of course they do. But I think Felicia Day (Charlie?) comes back because she's in the last episode. She also at some points goes to Oz and dates Dorothy. Honestly as far as SPN women go it seems like she does pretty well.
Crowley becomes King of Hell at some point. He also stays alive for ages even though he was never half as interesting as the fandom always thought he was.
Lucifer comes back! And presumably then so does Adam? I assume this means they address the whole "we left our other brother in a hell cage and never mentioned it again" weirdness, but I think it's funnier if I don't. Lucifer hangs out with Sam and maybe posseses Cas? (I've heard the word "Casifer" and assume this is what it means).
The Impala becomes a human in one episode, which is apparently actually a good episode. There's also an episode where Dean is a dog and another one where they're in Scooby-Doo. Honestly I would like to watch these.
There's a new kid called Jack that seems to be like a fourth main character and is Cas' son? Unclear whether this is in any way literal or just that they have a parental relationship. He seems to be around a lot but also is kind of dunked on by the narrative and not given enough attention? I dunno, he's new to me so I don't trust him but I assume there's a reason why people (including you I think!) care about him.
And then uhhhh there's cold static for like three seasons and Cas makes a deal with the Empty (which is like angel afterlife/superhell but is also a person that you can make deals with?) in order to save Jack's life, which means if he gets Perfect Happiness he will go to superhell. His perfect happiness is confessing love to Dean and getting ambiguously no-homoed in return. Later is re-homoed in spanish.
Oh, wait, Chuck is back and is explicitly God! And is evil about it because he has a story and wants Dean and Sam to follow his story but they don't? I'm sure this is either a genius metanarrative or a self-cannibalising mess, no in-between. They kill ChuckGod and save the world/themselves/free will.
Then they go to a pie-eating contest and Dean eats too many pies and then gets killed by a vampire who sticks him with a rusty nail. Sam is sad but goes to have a Normal Life with some woman who doesn't even get a face, let alone a name, and dies 50 years later from terrible prosthetics disease. Dean goes to heaven and his car is there because in the supernatural universe, cars go to heaven but gays don't.
...Until Dean then takes the car and goes back in time with it to makes sure his parents hook up or something? Idk what's happening in the prequel, but it sounds nuts.
And Mischa Collins comes out as straight. Love wins.
