justice league x rwby: super heroes and huntsmen part one thoughts (spoiler warning)
- i like that this movie is set up in a way that helps explain things to dc fans who may be watching the movie, unfamiliar to rwby, it feels like what ice queendom was trying to do but actually executing it
- in the same vein as above, as someone who doesn’t know much about dc i liked how they did that for the justice league characters too, despite them clearly being the more popular and well-known ip in the crossover
- i’m not a dc person but vixen my beloved <3
- seeing dorky jaune after the wild ride that has been v9 is a delight
- the pair-ups with the rwby characters and the dc characters are oddly fitting?? i loved the friendships between jaune/jessica and nora/cyborg especially, and ofc yang simping for diana and seeing jealous blake was a treat
- the brief flashes from the main show timeline are a really interesting touch that add to the trippy timeline business
- nora most op character in the show confirmed
- the arkos angst was unexpected but you best bet i ate that shit right up, and seeing maya pyrrha in her full glory heals my heart
- i thought i would be biased in favor of clark since he’s voiced by chandler riggs but honestly?? bruce stole the show for me
- sao was my favorite anime in middle school so you can imagine how i feel about the whole “virtual reality” twist, which i honestly felt was surprising and well-executing
- “his enemies” too?? if kilgore had said “her enemies” then it would’ve been clear who was behind it all on the rwby side of things but i can’t figure who else it is if not salem
- i vastly underestimated the bumbleby content we’d be getting, i was expecting some crumbs but we got a whole buffet especially with canon v9 stuff fresh in our minds… flirty beacon bees and jealous blake is everything i could’ve asked for and the movie delivered
- THE ENDING?????? what the hell is gonna happen in the second movie………

Film icon Pam Grier has teamed with Village Roadshow Pictures to develop a project based on her bestselling 2010 memoir, “Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.”
Known as the queen of 1970s Blaxploitation classics like “Coffy” and “Foxy Brown,” plus Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-nominated film “Jackie Brown,” Grier is enjoying her latest act thanks to movies like 2023’s “Cinnamon.” That film kicked off her relationship with Village Roadshow Pictures, which produced the title under the company’s Black Noir Cinema banner for Tubi.
“Foxy: My Life in Three Acts” details Grier’s legendary screen career; her relationships with Richard Pryor, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Freddie Prinze, among others; her experience as a Black female star in an era with rampant racism and sexism; and her battle with stage-four cervical cancer, diagnosed in 1988, when she was told she had 18 months to live.
Tumblr media
The production is in the early stages of development, so fans will have to wait and see if Grier’s story becomes a big screen biopic or a series. Jillian Apfelbaum, Tristen Tuckfield, and Nic Gordon will oversee the project for VRP, with Grier serving as executive producer.
Grier is an Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award nominee whose resume also includes starring roles in Showtime’s “The L-Word,” “Linc’s,” plus a featured arc on NBC’s “This Is Us.” The Tubi original movie “Cinnamon,” which was directed by Bryian Keith Montgomery Jr. and also starred Emmy nominee Damon Wayans and Grammy nominee Hailey Kilgore, premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival. The crime thriller won two prizes at the American Black Film Festival and was nominated for two NAACP Image Awards.
Next, Grier stars in the second installment of the horror anthology series “Them: the Scare,” premiering April 25 on Prime Video. Grier takes on the role of Athena, described as a “meticulous, clever and prideful” woman with “mama bear qualities who has hidden secrets.”
She is represented by IAG, LINK Entertainment and attorney Leigh Brecheen.

Kentucky Fried Chicken murders
On the evening of September 23, 1983, just before the restaurant closed, armed robbers held up the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Kilgore, Texas, USA. The five people in the restaurant at the time (who were either employees or waiting for someone there) were abducted, taken to a nearby field on County Road 232, and each executed with a shot to the back of the head. One of the victims, who was found a short distance from the others, had been raped. The victims' bodies were discovered by local police and Texas Rangers, and were identified as: David Maxwell (20), Joey Johnson (20), Monty Landers (19), Mary Tyler (37) and Opie Hughes (39).
For 22 years, the case remained unsolved, although several people were arrested. The discovery of a torn fingernail on one of the bodies lead to the arrest and charging of James Earl Mankins, Jr., a man with prior drug convictions who was also the son of state representative Jimmy Mankins. However, DNA analysis concluded that the fingernail was not his, and he was released after the beginning of pre-trial proceedings.
In November 2005, two men (already in prison for other crimes) were arrested and charged: cousins Darnell Hartsfield (44) and Romeo Pinkerton (47). At the time of arrest, Hartsfield was serving a life sentence for aggravated perjury in connection with the case. They were both charged with capital murder.

The Mosley Review: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Tumblr media
Like all of you, I have been starving for a good high fantasy epic that was fun, feels fresh and tangible. I too was there for the opening night of what would go down in history as one of the worst representations of a beloved fantasy game. The 2000 version of Dungeons & Dragons was........well, garbage. I had fun with certain aspects of that film as a kid, but even I didn't know what the film was trying to accomplish. Fast forward 23 years later and the titular game has reached a new height in popularity. I myself have never played but thanks to shows like Critical Role, Stranger Things, and my entry point The Legend of Vox Machina, I have become a little more versed in the terminology, creatures, classes and rules. I learned that anything goes as you the player are thrust into a new world that the dungeon master has crafted and how the roll of the dice determines your fate and the fate of your fellow party members. That's exactly the feeling I got from this film and I was happy to see that the filmmakers did their homework and made a fun experience of a film. Did it always hit its mark as an engaging and compelling story though? Not really. Yeah there is alot of cheesy storytelling and dialogue in the film that I felt could've flowed better. The film had hilarious moments of comedy and joy, but lacked the necessary depth that could've been mined from such a rich set up. The story was incredibly predictable and there was so much happening at times that it was dizzying. It couldn't truly hone in on what tone they were going for. A number of characters were very surface level and a particular characters' story payoff wasn't earned at all and rushed.
Tumblr media
Chris Pine was fun and charming as the bumbling bard Edgin Darvis. I loved his sense of humor along the adventure and how he played an unconventional type of hero which was that was refreshing. Chloe Coleman is always a joy to see on screen and as his daughter Kira, she was good. Their chemistry was good in the film as we get to see their strained relationship play out. Michelle Rodriguez was really fun as the barbarian Holga Kilgore. She's gets the majority of the action sequences in the film and she handles them as great as you'd expect. Her friendship with Edgin was the soul of the film and her motherly bond with Kira was great. Justice Smith was good as the half-elf sorcerer Simon Aumar. I liked his mixture of using practical items and actual magic. He struggle to become self-confident was interesting to watch, but it felt extremely rushed as he reaches a resolution that didn't feel earned. Sophia Lillis was decent as the tiefling druid Doric. I thought her escape sequence was amazingly shot and the variety of animals she changes into was well executed, but she was a very one note character. Her backstory gives the reason for constant stoic nature, but doesn't really give her much to do outside of that. Hugh Grant was mostly playing himself as the rogue con man Forge Fitzwilliam. He was good, but he felt more like a greedy game show host that kept his word, but in a round about way. Regé-Jean Page was perfect as the paladin, Xenk Yendar. He truly had fun being the stereotypical pure hearted hero to the point where it is almost comical how straight and narrow the character was. He had an awesome fight scene in the second act of the film and it was wonderfully shot. Daisy Head was very much the antagonist of the film Sofina, a Red Wizard of Thay. She had one mode in the film and that was be creepy while rarely blinking. She nailed it and she felt like the mid level boss in a video game that has some challenge, but is easily defeated once you see the pattern.
Tumblr media
The score by Lorne Balfe was epic and fun in the best way. There were moments where the score overpowered the sound in the film that it almost drowned out the dialogue. Visually the film is stunning and the effects were excellent. The dragon sequence and final battle of the film were a visual spectacle. What I truly loved was the practical creatures in the film and how gorgeous they looked. The opening scene blew me away with the use of more practical locals and creatures. The sound design in the film was good, but unbalanced when it came to dialogue and the surrounding thunderous sounds made it hard to understand what was said. As I said before, the character growth was truly rushed and the tone was a bit all over the place. The extremely predictable plot and weak villains made for an almost inconsequential finale. So the real questions need to be asked. Was it better than the 2000 film? Alot better. Was it the best high fantasy storytelling I've seen a long time? Nope. Was it enjoyable? Yeah, in that streaming on Netflix type of way. To me this was good matinee film that plays it safe and doesn't leave you with anything that’s particularly memorable. I would like to see a sequel or another film under the D&D brand, but this time more focused and a little bit more serious. I liked the fun aspect of it, but there were times where it seriously needed to grow up. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

hi!! you recommended vonnegut a while ago, and i just read slaughterhouse five and it was incredible and i was wondering which one of his books is your favorite/which one you would recommend next?? thank you!!
oh my GOD yes yes yes I am not a normal person about kurt vonnegut. I have three options for you with pitches as to why.
Mother Night is one of my favorites out of everything he ever wrote, and it’s definitely an excellent second book. He wrote in his foreword that it’s the only book he ever wrote that he knew what the meaning of it was. Whether that’s actually true and remained true, I don’t know, but the point he makes in it is one that’s pretty profound and I’ve heard shockingly little of in media.
The book follows a former high-ranking member of the Nazi party, who was a very successful propagandist for them, which distracted from the fact that he was also the most successful wartime spy for Allied forces. It’s also one of the less weird books he’s ever written? Kurt Vonnegut really leans into absurdism, and it’s more evident in some books than others. This sort of helps with the learning curve.
That being said, Cat’s Cradle is my favorite out of all of his books, and it’s also the second I ever read, after slaughterhouse five. It’s like, 20% more weird than slaughterhouse five? So if you vibed with some of the weirder aspects of it (think like, the alien zoo subplot) then I highly recommend Cat’s Cradle. I honestly can’t figure out how to give a synopsis of this one without revealing information best revealed in the book, but it’s a commentary on the post-WWII arms race and religion. It’s insanely good.
The thing about Kurt Vonnegut is that he has a lot of different recurring themes, and I feel like everyone takes away some kind of core message from his works. That being said, I feel like The Sirens of Titan most clearly and compellingly states Vonnegut’s core message in his works, and it’s definitely a must-read out of his books. It’s not my favorite but it’s definitely fighting it out for a place at the very top of the list. It follows the richest man in the world, who has the least purpose in it, at the center of an interplanetary war between Mars and Earth.
I will say that there’s only one book that I would say you probably shouldn’t read as your second book and that’s Breakfast of Champions. There’s two reasons for this.
First, Kurt Vonnegut’s books exist in a loosely interconnected universe. He’s somewhere between Marvel and Shakespeare in how he does it. It’s not like Marvel where it’s feeding into an overarching narrative, and you don’t need to read them in some kind of particular order to understand, but he’s not like Shakespeare just alluding to his own works in different plays in the sense that these books are explicitly existing within the same universe. You have specific places (Ilium, which you saw in Slaughterhouse Five, shows up a lot) and characters that recur throughout. The protagonist of Mother Night, for example, is briefly referenced in Slaughterhouse Five, etc. They’re used primarily as a vehicle for meta commentary and it’s honestly so well executed.
Kilgore Trout makes the most appearances across the disparate novels. He’s widely regarded as a character meant to be a stand-in for Vonnegut himself, and he plays his largest role in Breakfast of Champions. You also have characters in Breakfast of Champions that are taken directly from his other books, like with the minor role the protagonist of Bluebeard plays in BoC (Bluebeard is also a banger of a book worth reading but personally my least favorite of all his books). Again, you don’t need to read Vonnegut’s books in any official order to understand them, but Breakfast of Champions has the most cameos and greatest use of meta fiction in it, so the reading experience is just overall enhanced by having a little more grounding in his other works.
The second reason is it’s really fucking weird.
In a brilliant kind of way. It’s regarded to be one of his best works, and it deserves the reputation. But the techniques he uses in this are by far the most experimental, and while those experiments absolutely pay off, I usually recommend that people get used to his particular approach to absurdism before tackling Breakfast of Champions. I highly recommend this book if you like Vonnegut, but really spend time with him as an author before reading it and you’ll get so much more out of it.

Rocky & Bullwinkle Complete Newspaper Comic Strip Collection Volume 1 (2022) Al Kilgore (118 pages)
Whoever compiled this did a terrible job. Not only do the introductions to each storyline contain numerous misspellings, the compiler decided to rearrange the storylines so that readers wouldn't be confused like he claims he was confused. So you will find strips from 1965 intermingled with strips from 1963. Cartoon strips bounce from early July 1963 to late August 1965 back to July 1963 and then to September 1963, seemingly at random. (Each comic strip always has the day and year the strip was published and then a yearly copyright mark, allowing you to see precisely when it ran which is how you can tell strips are issued out of order. Some have had the date removed and the copyright mark removed making it impossible to tell their exact origin keeping you from properly placing these strips in order.)
The compiler, who is never given a name despite writing all the intros and explaining his love for this strip, may have been confused by a storyline but that doesn't mean all of us would have been confused. I would rather be confused by Al Kilgore's storyline than trying to understand why the compiler decided to run things out of order. Here's one more case of someone deciding, wrongly, what is the best for all readers based on his own confusion. Had I known the final product was so slim (both volumes could have fit in one book), so poorly executed and filled with misspellings I would have saved a lot of money ignoring them.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Release Date: March 31, 2023 | Theaters
SYNOPSIS:
A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers embark on an epic quest to retrieve a long-lost relic, but their charming adventure goes dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.
REVIEW:
The movie’s initial impression gives the feeling that the creators were aiming for a tone similar to Guardians of the Galaxy and they have succeeded. The film takes its plot, story, and source material seriously, but allows the comedy to come naturally from the characters and situations in a way that feels authentic. The performances are naturalistic, unlike the over-the-top acting in the 2000 film Dungeons & Dragons. There are a few points of concern in the film, but overall it looks like a typical light adventure blockbuster. Based on the trailer, the film follows the story of a bard named Edgin and his accomplice Holga, who steal a magical MacGuffin for someone who ends up being evil. They now need to assemble a team to stop the apocalypse they accidentally caused. The team includes a sorcerer, Simon, a druid, Doric, and a paladin, Xenk.
The film is filled with humor and references to Dungeons & Dragons. It highlights various fantastical elements of the Forgotten Realms, such as magic, dragons, and various creatures, like a tiefling, a mimic, and a gelatinous cube. The only criticism is the use of a slight remix of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” which does not fit the fantasy action-adventure genre, but the song’s use is probably only for timing purposes in the trailer and will not be included in the film’s score or soundtrack. The costumes, armor and outfits in the film look appropriate and blend well with the setting. Chris Pine’s leather jacket, for example, fits well with other characters’ cloaks and robes.
From the trailer, the cinematography looks great and the fight choreography is well-executed. Michelle Rodriguez’s portrayal of the barbarian character is particularly noteworthy. The trailer focuses on three characters: the human bard Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine), the barbarian Holga Kilgor (Michelle Rodriguez), and the tiefling druid Doric (Sophia Lillis). Although the paladin Xenk (Regé-Jean Page) and half-elf sorcerer Simon (Justice Smith) are in the film, they are less prominent than the other three characters. The interaction between the characters in the trailer seems to work well and creates a good sense of chemistry. The effects in the film, including the acid breath from the dragon and the matte shots of Neverwinter and the Underdark, look good and blend well into the live-action footage.
Similar to the process of adapting a novel to a film, some changes are necessary when adapting a game to a film. However, these changes should align with the original material’s tone and theme. Based on the trailer, it appears that the directors took great care in transitioning the original content into the new medium. The trailer effectively packs a lot of information into a two-minute clip and as more details are revealed, audiences will have a better understanding of what to expect.
CAST: Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, Daisy Head, Chloe Coleman, Jason Wong
