I was talking about my Exploding Head Syndrome to some friends the other day and one of them, he immediately gets this thousand-yard stare look on his face. Guessing, I say, have you had that before?
Turns out he's been, for years, going through phases where he jolts awake to loud knocking on the door that isn't really there. He's developed a whole coping mechanism where when he hears knocking, he looks at the dog to see if she heard it or not. He just thought he was a little crazy and didn't know it was a Thing.
Anyway, if you sometimes hallucinate loud noises the moment you wake up, it's called Exploding Head Syndrome, it's not dangerous, it's probably stress induced, and otherwise there's nothing that can be done for it. It's just a weird thing that happens sometimes.

Gonna share with y’all the freakiest thing that’s happened to me in a while.
So I have Exploding Head Syndrome, which is relatively harmless sleep disorder that causes auditory hallucinations, typically of very loud and sudden noises like thunder, gunshots, things falling, etc…. It happens when you’re going into and coming out of sleep, so it can be extra jarring when it happens.
With me, I typically get weird pulse-y banging noises. Once I got a really synth-y sounding “bwow” sound. And the thing about them is that the noises do not adhere to the acoustics of the room I’m sleeping in. I can tell it’s just the hallucinations because the sound doesn’t bounce off the walls like it should if it were actual sound waves. It sounds very “coming from inside your skull” which is a creepy way of putting it, but it’s true and others who experience it might get it.
Now occasionally, you can hear voices. This has happened to me only once, and it was roughly half a year ago.
I heard my mom- my several years dead mom- call for me from across “the house”. And I knew that shit was a hallucination because when I say “the house”, I mean that the sound mimicked the acoustics of my childhood home, and not the acoustics of where I’m currently living.
It hasn’t happened again. Yet.
But hey, if it’s a fluke and she’s just checking in with me from the afterlife, hi mom! Love you!

"Did you hear that?!"
Have you ever been just about to fall asleep, or just waking up, and been snapped awake by a sudden, loud, inexplicable noise that seemed to come from inside your head? I have!
If so, you, like me, may be one of the 10% of people who have experienced Exploding Head Syndrome! EHS is an auditory hallucination (sometimes also accompanied by visual hallucinations like flashes of light) that sometimes occurs when a person is falling asleep or waking up. The causes aren't know, but it seems to be completely harmless. It may be aggravated by irregular sleep or stress, like so many other weird things the human body does.
So rest easy. There's nothing wrong with you, your head just exploded a little bit.

My brain: heyyyyyy :)
Me, trying to nap before I have to get up: …What
My brain: [cue the loudest fucking scream you’ve heard in your life]
Still not sure if that’s the EHS or the PTSD honestly (one of my exes used to scream at me to jolt me awake)

BANG IN THE NIGHT
The room is dark, the night is deep
And I lay me down to sleep.
My eyes grow heavy, I'm drifting off now ...
When all of a sudden my head goes POW!
I jolt awake, fully alert
Nothing's wrong, I'm not hurt.
My brain just decided to play a game;
Exploding Head Syndrome is its name.
Nobody knows just what befalls,
It's a mystery why it happens at all.
Perhaps it's the slamming of Morpheus' gate --
'You're not asleep yet, you're still awake!'
Most people don't know what it is like,
They've never heard of this terrible plight.
I never know when it will occur --
There's no rhyme or reason, of that I am sure.
Whether I'm drunk or had not a dram,
Whether it's hungry or well-fed I am.
Whether I'm rested or ready to drop,
When my head hits the pillow it might just go POP!

Bonus points if you tag what sounds you hear. Lately, I've been hearing what sounds like a really loud dial tone and an old friend of mine shouting his own name. Turns out nothing jolts you more than hearing "DAN" right in your brain.
Edit: for full context, EHS is a condition of hearing loud sounds (commonly an explosion hence name) while falling asleep or waking up. Imagine it like that jerking feeling you get sometimes but it's a sound and it's in your head.

This happened to me last night as I was falling asleep, very alarming. My episode was accompanied by a loud voice telling me to check the doors. I was wide awake, so I got up and checked all the doors. This experience ranks as one of the strangest I’ve ever had. I hope it’s not going to be a recurring thing. 🤯

Speaking of exploding head syndrome lol
So you know how sometimes small birds will do a single chirp? It's like the same noise a fire or CO2 alarm will sometimes make after you've replaced the batteries.
Yeah that. But inside my head and incredibly loud lol.
Good morning XD
