okayyyy and let’s discuss the stuff people have dug up about what alex has liked in the past, the horrific stuff that helmut marko has come out with, max’s continuing association w the piquets, fuck it: none of them willing to take the knee in 2020 apart from seb and lewis. they’re all like this, all of them. my point being: you can’t bring morality into the f1 sphere, unless you’re willing to equally condemn. because what i don’t see is people condemning the drivers for associating with these people, instead the driver in question gets babied and lovingly given the benefit of the doubt whilst their girlfriend get absolutely slaughtered and villainised by people who’ve never even heard exactly what she’s done, they just hear a buzzword and use it to justify their crusade against her because how DARE their precious driver date someone they don’t approve of, nevermind thinking that the driver is choosing to intimately involve themselves with this person and if they’re a terrible person, what does that say about the driver?

been chewing on a tag I saw @gayferrari type... "wags are the new grid girls"

so what was the point of grid girls - to associate glamour and sex to an otherwise all male sport. too much penis, even the cars are shaped like phalluses they needed that yonic energy. it was a marketing tactic, a ploy to associate F1 with their playboy, drive cars get money bitches pussy aspiration. It was being marketed to men -- hence grid girls, not even women, dressed in the driver's insignia but more scantily clad, to be beside him for the unspoken implication that the driver can have her after winning the race.

it took until 2018 to phase out grid girls and was replaced by grid kids (and many of our presently woke feminist drivers then wanted grid girls to stay), with a growing cultural backlash and feminist criticism to the sexualisation of women as props in sports in an era where f1 was rapidly losing viewership and relevancy.

after the drive to survive netflix blow-up, FOM, Liberty Media started explicitly marketing to a lesser tapped market which is the female demographic. anything that wants to be relevant in the social media age needs stans, and nothing encourages that like parasocial relationships. now we have social media admins engaging specifically in fan spaces, using their language, referencing ships, doing fanservice and moving away from the solely male centric marketing.

now wags have always existed as long as drivers have been heterosexual but it wasn't until victoria beckham peak spice girls fame sitting courtside for david beckham made being a wife and girlfriend look glamorous, the outfits she wore and the face she served. the princess story for the new age, where the prince is a handsome famous athlete and you're the prize, the one he's blowing a kiss before shooting the hoop. it's why we still have nicole from pussy cat dolls and lewis hamilton winning world title edits in the year of 2025. it's that camera panning on her, with her gorgeous brown waves and teary eyes as she did the sign of the cross and ran to lewis, kissing him over his helmet -- the fireworks of yas marina in the background.

if grid girls tapped into a purely male heterosexual fantasy, wags tapped into a heterosexual female fantasy.

we can see this with the meteoric rise in social media following of the new age wags. f1 drivers have always dated models and beautiful women, but now those women become famous and build a following off the men they're seen with. what used to be limited to paparazzi and the daily mail, now has hundreds and thousands of independent gossip pages who follow their every move, meticulously detail every outfit and brand they've worn, track their social media activity, even their personal relationships. f1 wags are now bigger than ever, they're parasocially obsessed over and hated on more than ever, every move watched and criticised or smothered in affection just for existing. I'm not here to moralize on celebrity worship culture idgaf, but all this online attention is currency and it is profitable. hence wags build their own careers off the curated, aspirational image of being a wag. of travelling all over the world to beautiful places, wearing beautiful outfits, having a (up to debate) beautiful man by your side -- and brands have certainly taken notice. hence the sponsorships, beauty and fashion brands and self care sponsors all vying to work with them from your rhode lipgloss to your alo matching set

now Liberty Media has seen the shift -- no longer reliant on their official female mascots of grid girls, it's the meticulously dressed, savvy, skinny, gorgeous wives and girlfriends who are the aspirational women on the grid. it's important to note hundreds of women have always worked at f1 races, on the grid as marshals, in hospitality, as team personnel, as engineers and strategists. but YAWN 🥱 bo-ring! everyone knows the most important people on the grid are the drivers and therefore the most important women are the ones at his side. and so Liberty Media pans the cameras on these women and their doe eyed worry/elation as their guy crosses the finish line. it's more frequent, more lingering, and voyeuristic in a way that invites you to inhabit their place in your mind -- what would that be like? after all, you viewer at home are similarly biting your nails watching your guy cross the finish line. in that moment she represents you.

it's ofc misogynistic to imply the aspiration of wags is just for women — the idea of the Hero taking his helmet off and kissing the swooning damsel is literally in bond movies and appeals to the conqueror/winner male fantasy.

but from a purely marketing standpoint, FOM benefits from putting these women in official unofficial spaces as part of the drivers' (and thus F1's new more sanitized, "inclusive" brand image). When the wags are invited to F1 Academy events to promote them, when they're invited to the official F1 movie that's just for the drivers' viewing as the plus one, when they're shown on DTS beside the drivers in their private lives, or a whole segment that's about Ginger Spice riding horses with her sex pest team principal husband, when they're in hospitality and the camera cuts to them every so often signalling to the you, the audience, are supposed to care about this story they're selling you. it's no longer the scantily clad 'girls' by the drivers' side to be ogled, it's the official dowager titled Wives and Girlfriends selling you the aspirational, western, heterosexual, wealthy, conventionally attractive family unit.

not here to cast any moral judgments on wag culture -- I enjoy looking at beautiful women who live such fundamentally different lives too, but rather looking critically at why the larger media complex behind f1 wants to sell you their personal relationships in the era where your attention is currency~

The issue is that Lily hasn't consented to being a public figure. She's not like Alexandra, who started out private then opened her instagram and became a WAG influencer. She hasn't CONSENTED to being this super amazing woman in stem icon and figurehead, she's just a woman who's trying to build a career and I think she should be left in peace to do that. People who are trying to find out this information about her wouldn't know her if not for her boyfriend, and don't know anything about her, so I question their motives for digging for information about her (I observed the weird reaction to everyone hearing her speak for the first time, with loads of people saying it gave them the ick.......maybe because it reminded people that she's her own person in her own relationship, and not a placid self-insert).

Wow! Great analysis on wag culture replacing grid girls. I want to add as someone who frequents f1 gossip ig pages— the wags are hated and criticised for every ‘problematic’ thing they have done since they were children and also for *having* problematic families.

Rebecca for example is talked about for her past as a yacht girl like its the most shameful and lowest thing a person can do, and said to be perpetuating this culture. When I called put that gossip page for not understanding the power dynamics of these industries, they doubled down.

No one ever has a positive thing to say about the wags, but also no one ever wants to connect the dots that their fav drivers choose to associate with their gfs anyway.

Despite the wag culture being marketed to heterosexual women, they are the ones who come down hardest on the wags.

there's a lot of misogyny + jealousy + wanting to dunk on a woman you consider somehow beneath you (doesn't have a real job/got plastic surgery/whatever morally superior transgression) going on in those pages and yeah the cognitive dissonance that drivers are nuanced people but wags are defined by whatever Evil Act they're done forever

that being said, it doesn't mean everyone the culture is marketed to is hating on them. in fact, the way marketing works the people buying a rhode lipgloss because a wag wore aren't the ones in a gossip page tearing her apart. if a wag has 500k followers, that's 500k being advertised to and even if 1% of them click on the links, that's 5000 potential customers

while wag pages have like 40k followers and of that most followers are happy to just like the pics or scroll. of that maybe 200-500 people are doing discourse, hating on them. which isn't a small number by any means! it's just we see them and it sticks out more, but wag culture and the influencing wouldn't be promoted as hard if it wasn't massively popular and to metrics that we aren't as easily privy to. it has such a robust counterculture/haters Because it's a massively popular culture to begin with, especially as wags start getting mainstream f1 fame

24. topic that brings up the most rancid discourse again i'm trying to keep this to more fandom related discussions so we're not going to say any combination of words related to races that may or may not have been controversial. you know what really brings up rancid discourse? wags. especially kelly or anybody charles and lando have dated. it's just sooooo telling to me that people will gladly tune into a sport week after week where mega rich politically disengaged mostly white exclusively men will drive around - including in countries with horrendous human rights records - under the instruction of other mega rich men who are all frequently even worse, and like i'm not saying that's not their prerogative, i have that tv on 5 minutes before lights out for every fucking session. but it's very interesting how that's all fine and dandy but as soon as the woman one of these men is dating breathes wrong or posts a sponsored instagram story or starts dating a younger man when he has fully been a legal adult with a job for several years everyone's calling a fucking among us emergency meeting to discuss how she is the devil and an evil gold digging grooming danger to the poor sweet innocent baby boy in her clutches. like the double standards are so obvious and clearly grounded in misogyny that i can't take any of it seriously and frankly i immediately lose all my respect for anybody, no matter how reasonable their other opinions might be, who engages with wag discourse in that way.

i think (and this is just personal opinion) a lot of the times wags are hated just because of who they're dating. most of the fans don't care about their problematic behaviour. they just use it to further their agenda. these fans are the same ones who make excuses for their favs (re: Lando fans defending his comments about Trump or max fans when it's brought up that max willingly supported Nelson Piquet and called lance stroll (or esteban) a mongol as an insult). but when it comes to these two driver's partners people will bend over backwards to drag them at any given point but don't reserve the same energy for the drivers (I'm not saying that the wags should not be criticised but a lot times the criticism is rooted in misogyny (like calling Kelly, "an old hag" or saying she looks ugly) there's so much they could've chosen from, but most of the time (from what I've seen; totally not saying that there is not valid criticism present about them not being a good person, supporting questionable leaders etc.)

also, this idolation of the exes. like that relationship is over, why are you still hung up on it? 😭 both the parties have moved on to different relationships, it's been a fucking year, give it up guys. especially with charles and charlotte and carlos and isa. the carlos fans (and a lot of gossip pages, other fans) call rebecca a prostitute or an escort and say how much better isa was to rebecca and how rebecca is not good for carlos yadda yadda as if sainz is not a 29 year old grown up who knows what's best for him. they behave as if rebecca has physically restrained him and is preventing him from doing whatever he wants. same with lando, as if he's not an adult who probably knows about his partner's actions and chooses to stay with them.

and don't get me started on the performative activism of F1. every breath that these people take is hypocritical. when will stans understand that they don't care about you or anyone other than themselves. most of them grew up rich and privileged, in a protected bubble. i don't expect them to have a good take on the world issues.

I'm sorry for this rant but I've been following this sport since last year and i have lurked on gossip pages because I just enjoy low stakes funny gossip or driver transfer gossip (which i do have thoughts about if you're interested in listening to them) but what I was bombarded with was a very misogynistic discourse and micro analysing of every move in a wife or girlfriend's life. like goddamnit just enjoy the damn sport and the silly little memes 😭 😭. i just want to be able to enjoy a healthy discourse on wags fashion, leo the cutie and drivers and low stakes, funny haha bullshit
