why is so much of sewing just tracing and cutting and tracing again q_q i see why people get projectors and use adobe illustrator now
#drawing up a design that i can easily pattern from my sloper: 😊#actually having to make the pattern by tracing and cutting ad infinitum: 😰#piecing together printer paper to get a big enough sheet of paper and doing this ten million times: 🥲😭#not to mention the IRONING.... prewashing the fabric and having to iron 8 yards of fabric???? excuse me????#and then distorting it as i iron bc it has a slight stretch and i got so tired i stopped being careful 2 yards in#and the way that you're supposed to press every seam... excuse me... am i just supposed to have my iron heated and on standby at all times#AND THE STEAM??? i just got stay tape the other day and thought it'd be a neat alternative to stay stitching#BUT IT NEEDS STEAM TO ACTIVATE (which okay makes sense) BUT long story short i'm too afraid to use the steam function#on my iron because none of us are sure if water should go back into a tank that's been in disuse for 30+ years#so instead i get this water spray pen and delicately spray down the length of each piece of stay tape#before i cover it with a piece of gauze and iron it. and then i have to iron it extra so all the water actually evaporates#oh and the spray pen holds as much water as half a pen so i have to walk to the kitchen every 10 sprays to refill it#and i have to do this for every curved edge on my pattern pieces#i mean the alternative is just stay stitching but then i would have to calibrate my settings for a single layer of fabric instead of double#which means i have to switch my needle out more and i'm still new enough that sometimes i install a needles wrong despite going through#all the same exact motions that i usually would. i'm LITERALLY suffering out here. anyway can't wait to sew or whatever#oh and did i mention i went to a sewing meetup recently? yeah...#everyone there bought like $30-$100/yard fabric and i was there awkwardly knowing i only buy like $12/yard fabric#honestly though i have the opposite problem people usually joke about. i find it So hard to find fabric i actually like#it needs to be the right fiber + right color + right pattern/texture + right weight + i have to know exactly what i'm going to make with it

Bought a booksleeve at barnes and nobles this weekend for my freewrite- they only had lile two designs and the size was BARELY enough to fit it so I had to fight with the zipper to get it in. Got into the parking lot and thought "I could've probably just made one" and decided that would be the incentive to finally put my sewing machine to use in 2024

Hey y'all! I want to experiment with a new (to me) plushie pattern making technique*, but I'm not sure what I want to make with it. What complex plushies would you suggest? *it's the one where you make a 3D model out of crumpled paper or other objects and like masking tape around it, then draw on lines for the pieces, cut out the pieces, and add darts. I've considered doing it before but didn't want to crumple up that much paper on a technique that I might end up disliking, but it occurred to me this year I could use wrapping paper my family would be throwing away anyway! so this year I am experimenting lol

When I was a kid, I had this Barbie game where you would make outfits, and then you could print them out on fabric paper and actually make them for your dolls. I am excited to say, that I was able to install it on my computer! I really wish they would remaster all the old Barbie games. And even, make a new fashion one where you could make clothes for all the different body shapes and also the Kens.

Like honestly so many ppl have this approach to art n drawing like they are waiting for a cheat code that makes you good....
Like drawing is one of the most accessible artform (you only need a pencil an eraser n a piece of paper) and sure there are tips to look for but you can't subside on those alone... You need to walk the walk n figure it out yourself that's how you learn... There are no strict guidelines to things bc your art is a reflection of YOU and how YOU see things and figure things out... But also it's not that serious just make some pictures lol

Things my next bookbinding project has taught me: regular-ass office paper has dye lots apparently?? Ran out of paper during printing, opened a new pack, and now I have three signatures that are a totally different shade of white.

(Colonel) What was the weirdest thing you ever fought?
"I had to put down a malfunctioning fabricator for the science branch once. It flailed its dozens of arms so intensely that it had snapped the pole they tried to use to turn it off, and the force of its movements were enough to cause it to hop around slightly. By the time I had gotten there, it had shot sharp metal wires all over the lab until it had run out of material, and was making an awful grinding sound in the corner. Most of the staff had taken cover behind some overturned tables."
"Even though it was an expensive piece of equipment, the scientists had enough of its reign of terror, and just asked me to destroy it so they could get back to work."
"I could have cut it in half with a single shockwave, but that attack was too destructive to use in the lab. So - I found a fire axe, waited for an opening, and threw it like a tomahawk at the fabricator. I managed to take it out in one hit."
Colonel paused, making a small, amused smile as he reflected on the experience.
"I can laugh at this situation now, but at the time I was far from pleased..."

Hiiiii, so I have another suit I wanna work on, but I’m waiting for the fabric and I also have to get the hippogryph off the mannequin, so I’m finishing the head for that. Anyway I realized a while ago that I painted the eye mesh the wrong color but I’ve been putting it off 🙃
So now I’m repainting that and hopefully I can finish that today? (Maybe not, it’s 5pm) and maybe get this head on the mannequin to pattern it for fur
I also bought some head base 3d models but I have to print a respooler so I can actually use the filament I wanna use in the ams of my printer. So I’m waiting for the respooler so print. And I can’t work on the other suit I wanna do until the fabric comes. Several waiting games going on here.
I’m still doing stuff, it’s just kinda mundane stuff

Going on yet another rant about “merch”
If you did not screen print that shirt yourself, you did not make it.
You made the design on it, which I’m sure would be a nice poster or sticker perhaps? Which of course you didn't print yourself, that sounds hard! An embroidered design? Maintaining a 12 needle embroidery machine capable of producing a design with that many colors for the number of orders being received is a lot of work, that's pretty impressive! Not to mention maintaining proper tension on the frame working with a hundred stretchy t shirts, which idk came from somewhere who knows! Your repeating pattern looks very nice on a skirt that you did not make and was mass produced by some Vietnamese person getting paid pennies so that ~50 gay people on the internet could pay for international shipping for a design you “made”. Wow that mug is awesome didn’t know you got into sublimation printing! And have a cylindrical heat press to be able to do not just mugs, but tumblers too! Woah your sublimation set up can do bed sheets (any size)? And shower curtains? And three different shapes of throw pillow stuffed with poly fill, which will never decompose and isn't comfortable to begin with?
Your poorly digitized vector art looks lovely as an enamel pin now that someone else (Who? More like who cares!) cleaned it up for you and then created moulds for and maybe even hand injected the enamel into only for you to sell maybe seven or eight of them. Aw damn your design got ripped off? Who could have guessed that with the distribution power of an entire manufacturing plafffnt that has hundreds, if not thousands of moulds sitting around that they might have used your mould to make themselves a profit for a change! Those money grubbing Chinese bastards! After all, you were there every step of the way, casting the negative of the mould, running the injection of liquid metal into that mould, mixing each color of enamel, and precisely filling each segment of the design, which you refused to simplify! You just can't compromise with art.
Ohhh I see they’re made to order so its more sustainable. So this factory (Guatemala? India? The Philippines? Pakistan? Could you point to it on a map? They just don't teach you this stuff in school!) Anyways this factory in some poor country has to keep your design on file, oh and for your enamel pins they have to keep the mould too! Ahh right but it’s sustainable, because it's a limited run. You’re the 100th person this week to place an order, and they're only printing 50 of your design, you should complain to the manufacturer about how slow your orders are being filled.
I love supporting small businesses - it’s just you after all! With all the hard work you’ve put into fiddling around in procreate who has time to figure out material acquisition, and production runs, and printer calibration, and inventory management, and machine maintenance, and payment processing, and international shipping, and packaging, and
#eaii#accidentally clicked on someones redbubble and they call it that because i started seeing red#i'm so fucking sick of this shit#look i think its great that people have more avenues to sell their art#but idk i feel like i'm crazy for thinking that should actually involve MAKING the art that they sell#the upfront investment is prohibitive I get it#but then connect with someone#preferably who lives on the same continent as you#to produce it locally#and like. a printer capable of printing nice stickers and posters is not like heavy duty machinery#again#expensive - sure#but i can almost guarantee that someone living in your city has a wide format printer they'd be willing to let you use#i make custom embroidered patches#im in the middle of building my own embroidery machine. obviously you do not have to do this#the machines that i use currently i borrow time on from someone else#'where do you get cute packaging?' i have brown paper envelopes that i decorate with washi tape and stamps which people seem to like#'how do you calculate shipping?' i don't usps does that for me#'what happens if an order gets lost?' it sucks and is inconvenient but i send them another one or refund their choice#'where do you get materials?' scrap fabric almost 100% of the time unless its a very custom order i spend very little on materials#i'm not asking anyone to reinvent payment services or whatever like if you want to use your neighbors printer and then sell those on etsy#great! thats what i do!#(and also fuck etsy - for different reasons)#but if you outsource the actual labor of producing the good that you are selling to easily exploitable people on the other side of the worl#im judging you. hard.
