The Dragon Prince's "Mercy" Motif

TDP Fam, this is so fascinating.

I made this post about the connection between two characters' names. Nothing is coincidental in this show. The creators have things mapped out for future seasons.

🚨Spoilers below! 🚨

We know this arc is called The Mystery of Aaravos, and so far - in the show, anyway - he does appear more malevolent than benevolent, using characters as pawns (Viren, Callum, Claudia) to achieve his means (freedom). He was one of the Great Ones, but he lost privilege and title, becoming known as The Fallen Star. It was revealed that he's been behind wars, manipulating leaders for centuries, and so he was locked away because he was too dangerous. (If you're reading this, you've seen the show and know all of this.)

Now...E1S6 (which was previewed at NYCC) opens with a conversation between him and another Startouch Elf. He's distraught - it's the first time we've ever seen Aaravos showing such incredibly desperate emotions. (As I've mentioned, he's being painted as a sympathetic character.)

First, you wanna make a bet these statues depict the very scene featured in S1E6?

It's too perfect.

Now, this elf is called The Merciful One. As I pointed out in my other post, there is another character that is associated with mercy. You guessed it:

Her story is literally called The Queen's Mercy and one of the many titles bestowed upon her (if you read the story) is Queen Aditi, the Merciful. (I've already done the math in this post here.)

Now, why is this so fascinating?

Mercy, by definition, is compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm. (Thanks dictionary.com.) But as we know from reading The Queen's Mercy, Aditi isn't merciful at all. She's cunning. Kim'dael goes to Aditi seeking sanctuary. What does she get in return? A Mercy Debt.

Could this be considered merciful? I mean...she did not banish or harm Kim'dael. But she's trapped eternally, and literally owes her life. Kim'dael is a villainous character, no doubt - but that is not compassion or forgiveness. (Whether or not she deserves it is a different conversation.)

Now let's go back to Aaravos and the Merciful One, shall we?

If you look the images, Aaravos is clearly distraught, and yet the Merciful One appears calm, cool, collected. We can assume he's...well, granting mercy.

By what? Imprisoning Aaravos? This could very well be the moment he is imprisoned.

But is it true compassion? Is it true forgiveness? Or is it, "I'm granting you something in my power because - even though it seems wrong to you - it's for the greater good." I could see Startouch Elf philosophy being cold and factual, distant and matter-of-fact - leaving no room for matters of the heart or emotions. (Doesn't this elf reference that Aaravos is in this position because of love [and I suspect has something to do with Leola]? If someone can get me their exact quote, that would be fantastic.)

This opens up a really interesting conversation regarding the term 'mercy' - because what I think is happening here is that there are two characters in power (The Merciful One and Queen Aditi) who are technically granting 'mercy' (although I am only hypothesizing based on the new Startouch Elf's name), and yet it is not at all merciful to the character. It's almost as if they're both saying, "Yeah, this sucks for you right now, but it's going to be better off for everyone else in the end." Kim'dael is 'imprisoned' by the Mercy Debt. Aaravos is literally imprisoned.

I mean, Kim'dael is in the same position as Aaravos' statue in the Sea of the Castout.

I don't think this is a coincidence. I think both of these things will come back to bite our beloved Dragang. They are the ones who have to deal with the consequences, after all.

Did they deserve this treatment? For Kim'dael - I'm leaning towards yes, she is clearly a villain and has done horrific things.

And...we know that Aaravos has something to do with Aditi's disappearance.

But did Aaravos deserve this - imprisonment?

Now that is yet to be seen. And I have a feeling S6 will leave us all questions more than answers.

Hello, cadet here! :D

I wanted to ask something about one episode of the show in particular (if you had watched it). The Cosmic Contest, we got to see these entities in there called the Overlords, and by what the PMATGA wiki says, apparently they watch over everyone in the universe. As seen below, I guess Betrayus, Pac, and Apex had disobeyed their laws.

My question is about some theories you may have of what these 'Overlords' might be in the PMATGA universe because to me they seem like these possible gods or something. Do you have any suggestions on what these things are because it's confusing me to the core :') (Love you btw, your works mean a lot to me 🥰)

Fam, I'm more surprised by the fact that the wiki actually wrote something coherent and factual for a change 😂 Or at least as factual as speculation goes, haha. (But what the wiki mentions about the Overlords "council the universe to make each world balanced with peace/The worlds disobeying their laws" is false because this particular info was never mentioned anywhere in the episode.)

So, the Overlords.

They do seem to be deities of some sort and the powers they have support the theory. It's interesting that it's included that they are the Overlords of the "Outer Regions," which makes me wonder if they come from solar systems on the outskirts of the galaxy, or from different galaxies entirely.

It is possible that these are considered the gods of the show's universe, but to be honest, I think they're more likely to be demi-gods or fallible beings that are immortal-but-not-immune-to-death. I say this because they may be powerful, but they've mentioned that they do indeed have physical features and have the need to use the bathroom, so they still have mortal/biological needs.

"We are the Overlords of the Outer Regions! Your noisy battle has woken us from our centuries-long Space Nap Supreme...and we are extremely cranky! Your incessant bickering has made us get up early, and our hair looks all funny and we REALLY need to use the bathroom! Clearly we must deal with you troublesome noise-makers." -Main Overlord speaker

They also alluded to having their own sets of fears and threats. The main Overlord speaker himself had this to say about Pac;

...which opens up a whole theory in and of itself. What IS a Yellow Orb's full potential? How powerful can Pac become if his 'full potential' is enough to challenge the Overlords?

So because the Overlords can be challenged by something like a Pacworlder, I don't exactly think that they are all-powerful or strong enough to be gods. Rather, I think that they are lesser deities or immortal beings that live in space, similar to the Ghosteroid and the Space Worm, but more intelligent of course. Maybe they do have their own home planet or base of operations, but they are capable of surveilling the entire galaxy and communicate across solar systems via a telepathic/intergalactic transmission such as what we see in the video.

That's my theory on it at least XD

Kinn is a fucking softie, fam. I never understood this strange assumption that he's this evil boogeyman. Considering the show he's on and compared to the other characters on this show, he's probably the most tame out of everyone on this show. Kinn wears his emotions on his sleeve and he's so easy to read. Especially when it comes to people who know him best. He can hide who he is around his enemies and allies, but he's an open book around those closest to him. 

Not to say this is a bad thing, because it’s not. We love a softie who can do what needs to be done when necessary. Kinn cares too fucking much and I would definitely like to see him treat the people around him the way they treat him but I know he wouldn't do that. He can stand to be more selfish and less merciful, but we have to understand that's not who Kinn is. At his core, he cares about his people (canon fact). Kinn's selflessness comes at a price. It's why he's drowning. Mentally, he's unwell and he just allows certain things to happen to him and he doesn't retaliate when he could or should. I wonder if he allows it because he feels like he deserves it? 🤔 Does he think he deserves to be treated like an afterthought? Just as long as he's receiving the requited love he's always wanted, maybe. I'm sure that's the effects of Korn's abuse as Kinn doesn't know love without conditions. He doesn't know how to receive unconditional love as he's never had it, so he overlooks betrayal as long as he's still loved. He won’t rock the boat because he’s been conditioned to believe the only way he can obtain and maintain validation and approval from those he loves is if he turns a blind eye to the bad things.

Despite this selflessness, Kinn is not stupid. He's far more intelligent than people give him credit for. You don't have to believe he's smart and that's your right, but that wouldn't be factually true. That wouldn't be accurate according to canon. Regardless of how the writers wrote him (or didn't write him) in the last half of the season, Kinn sees all. He notices everything. He knows when something isn't necessarily right. He won't confront the issue and he won't discuss it, because he thinks it's normal. It's normal for him to receive that kind of love. I love Porsche but his shenanigans would have been enough to make the average person leave without question. The mixed signals that come with his actions would make a perfectly stable person to wonder if he even loves them. That's just something to note. I'm not saying that Kinn is this innocent uwu baby, but I am saying that Porsche isn't innocent either. 

Korn has established a baseline for the way Kinn receives love. I don’t doubt that Kinn may have realized that Tawan wasn’t the real thing, but I think Kinn overlooked what was right in front of his face due to his upbringing. It all goes back to the way Korn uses his children as pawns in a chess game. Kinn has an abusive father who doesn’t raise a hand to him but he wields words in a way that doesn’t leave any room for agency and choice. I don’t think Kinn realizes he has a choice in the matter. He accepts whatever he can get, because it appears as if Korn held his love over Kinn’s head just as long as he did what he’s told. Just as long as he’s Daddy’s perfect little mafia heir, he will get that love. Unfortunately, he won’t ever reach that point of realization until he confronts that issue and receives professional help dealing with it. Kinn is trapped in a mental prison his father has created for him.

Seriously, such a well put together, factual doc that as always is led with empathy for the victims involved and did not exploit the situation in my opinion. I know six hours is a committment, and it is a committment, I literally just did it 💀 but bro, it gives you a complete break down of a distinct pattern that is an example of the absolutely worst thing that can happen with a family vlog channel. I'm not saying that all family vlog channels are bad, but I think a conversation worth continuing is should influencers that categorize themselves as being a family channel (or insta or whatever) be held to the same standard as kids who work outside the home (like, for example child actors, models, artists hell even little siblings of artists and actors, etc)? Is it exploitation for parents to constantly vlog about their lives and heavily feature their kids?

Last night I watched a different video essay by Shanspeare called Using Kids for Clout: The Downfall of Familt Channels and while none of the others that I've heard of are nearly as horrific as 8P (at least as far as we know) it's still worth asking, where's the limit with these forms of income as far as the kids are concerned and when is it considered labor?

Both of these are definitely worth a watch. Those two creators are pretty fucking awesome too, you shoukd check out their other content. So... anyway, how was ya'll's day?

Do you think DC has any plans to make Kon queer (since they’ve been baiting TimKon since Tim has come out and Kon’s creator said he thinks he’s bi) or do you think canon queer Kon and TimKon are dead?

I don’t 100% think any of those things, tbh

I think right now the current solidified upcoming plans for Kon are far more Superfam-related (like, the upcoming new designs for the whole fam and stuff in Action Comics, and his solo book from Round Robin being him off on his own adventure in part at least bc of complicated feelings about how he fits into the Superfam nowadays based on the initial preview we got a while back) rather than… related to Tim or anything like that. Sexuality could maybe be a topic of discussion in the solo but my… vibe read, I guess (which isn’t based off much solid factual stuff but rather observation and intuition etc) is that there’s more character work to be done with just re-establishing him in the present day DCU and nailing down his status quo before shaking it up with something like exploring ‘hey what if he’s queer’.

any ‘baiting’ of TimKon in recent times (since Tim’s come out) has happened under Fitzmartin’s pen—and maybe that’s an angle she would like to explore with Kon and possibly has ideas/plans for down the road—but as of right now she’s not writing him in anything soon (since, again, the things he’s slated to appear in are Action Comics and his Round Robin book). I think it’s always like, relevant to remember that with something like DC where characters pass between different writers with different ideas and stuff, what may seem like something being hinted at with one writer could totally just… not be picked up on and continued by the next- especially when there’s different editorial teams the character is going between too. Things aren’t always as deliberate as we may want them to be.

But anyways, I don’t think it’s impossible for any of it to happen, i don’t think queer Kon or the possibility of TimKon are ‘dead’ or anything like that. but I also don’t really think of anything like that as being… solidly planned at this moment.

I keep reading takes that have issue with how House of the Dragon differs from the book essentially saying that the show is doing it wrong because IN THE BOOK such and such happened. Even so far as very authoritatively letting anons know (who haven't read Fire & Blood) just how and why HOTD is so (cue Sansa wail) "ruining everything!" because they are doing it wrong!

But here's the thing. No, House of the Dragon is not doing it wrong. Because the book is an inaccurate historical retelling based on hearsay, and second-and-third biased (and quite misogynistic) sources collated by a likely biased (and also likely misogynistic) archmaester who wrote this history ONE HUNDRED YEARS after these events had taken place. Absolutely NOTHING in Fire & Blood can be taken as the gospel truth. Nothing. Not one word of it can be taken at absolute, 100% face value because it is taken from the words of people with an agenda, or a recollection AFTER THE FACT, and then written by a maester who is putting all of this information that he has collected together, and editing it with his own (admittedly) slightly biased personal spin.

The showrunners (and executive producer, this guy, you know, you may have heard of him, George R.R. Martin, he has more than a bit of input) have said quite clearly: The show is *objective.*

Objective definition: not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts.

Here is the money quote:

“He wrote it as a fake history,” Condal said on Hero Nation. “It’s written from multiple different points of view. There’s another imaginary character named Archmaester Gyldayn that’s sifting through these primary sources trying to figure out what actually happened. It presents a big chance for a lot of invention and for us as the filmmakers to go through it and figure out what’s the actual story that we want to tell? We set out from the very beginning, we are going to tell the objective truth here.”

So, again, those who wail that the show is doing it wrong. No, they are not. The book NEVER presented itself as the factual truth. The show, however, IS doing so.

In other words, Daemrya fam.... we continue winning. Daemrya’s love story is that most baddest of bitches. THAT is the objective truth. Uh huh!

The irony is that the Sonic that Manic knew and the Sonic that Tails knows are different people.

Manic is right to feel how he does and it sucks, but no matter how factual and 'correct' he is, it doesn't change anything or influence Sonic's actions or behavior. Manic has to just deal and suffer, he knows he isn't being the 'bigger man', even if he's trying to frame like that to himself, and he feels punished for it; for his resentment at the situation, his frustration at himself for not doing more and his own feelings, and at Tails and what he represents, (Later on at their mother too).

You gotta feel for the poor dude tbh. He's a victim of the narrative

Pheeewwww... man. This comic took waaaayyy too long to make. As I'm posting this, I'm already over half way to 21,000.

This took me several weeks for sure. Life kept getting in the way and other projects were of more importance. But it's finally done. I'm so glad its done so I can go back to drawing other things <XDD

Also, this journey on Tumblr has been a crazy one for sure. And I probably didn't have to make this HUGE comic to celebrate.. But I wanted to. I wanted to make a big comic that shows how big this milestone is for me. How much it means to me. I always say in these milestone posts "WOW I never thought I'd get this far!! :DDD" But I really do mean it. When I first joined Tumblr I really didn't think I'd get this big. I was shocked when I made it to 1,000! <XD

You guys have really brought so much substance to my life. And really give me this drive to draw and create. You guys make me want to improve my artwork. To bring it to a higher quality. To make more of it. I cant thank you guys enough for sticking around and reading my goofy comics. Your support has taken me a lot further than I thought I'd go. And now with Cici and Gerald? As you know I am frequently the stupid. And bad with names. And have mild dyslexia. These qualities led me confusing a post in support of the ceo described as “cancelled for no reason” (I think that’s what I mean glommed on to, like it was factual) and reblogged thinking I was supporting the trans woman who got criticized and banned and has in beautiful response caused so many other trans women to risk it all and post selfie timelines.

Well first of all I’m so sorry. I don’t know how many trans or lgbtqia+ followers i have or had, but I’m sorry. I swear to you all that I love you, hate any hurt I’ve caused, and will look deep at my heart in case that’s the problem, but will particularly be careful with the other health issues I know I have when it could hurt you. I swear, I really admire you all for finding yourself and standing up for yourself however you’re able in a world that just doesn’t want you to exist. Well, I do.

China-EU Tensions Escalate over Huawei and 5G Networks: A Clash of Security and Trade

Hey, tumblr fam! Have you heard about the latest drama between China and the EU over Huawei? If not, let me fill you in. China is not happy with some EU countries that have banned or restricted Huawei and ZTE from their 5G networks, citing security risks. China says the EU has no legal basis or factual evidence to do so, and that it violates free trade principles. Huawei also claims that the EU’s decision is not based on a transparent or objective assessment of 5G networks.

The EU, on the other hand, stands firm on its position.
