“Are you the witch who turned eleven princes into swans?”
The old woman stared at the figure on the front step of her cottage and considered her options. It was the kind of question usually backed up by a mob with meaningful torches, and the kind of question she tried to avoid.
Coming from a single dusty, tired housewife, it should’ve held no terrors.
“You a cop?”
The housewife twisted the hem of her apron. “No,” she muttered. “I’m a swan.”
A raven croaked somewhere in the woods. Wind whispered in the autumn leaves.
Then: “I think I can guess,” the old woman said slowly. “Husband stole your swan skin and forced you to marry him?”
A nod.
“And you can’t turn back into a swan until you find your skin again.”
A nod.
“But I reckon he’s hidden it, or burned it, or keeps it locked up so you can’t touch it.”
A tiny, miserable nod.
“And then you hear that old Granny Rothbart who lives out in the woods is really a batty old witch whose father taught her how to turn princes into swans,” the old woman sighed. “And you think, ‘Hey, stuff the old skin, I can just turn into a swan again this way.’
“But even if that was true – which I haven’t said if it is or if it isn’t – I’d say that I can only do it to make people miserable. I’m an awful person. I can’t do it out of the goodness of my heart. I have no goodness. I can’t use magic to make you feel better. I only wish I could.”
Another pause. “If I was a witch,” she added.
The housewife chewed the inside of her cheek. Then she drew herself up and, for the first time, looked the old woman in the eyes.
“Can you do it to make my husband miserable?”
The old woman considered her options. Then she pulled the wand out from the umbrella stand by the door. It was long, and silver, and a tiny glass swan with open wings stood perched on the tip.
“I can work with that,” said the witch.

Just realized I uploaded this on my other socials but not on here. A couple years ago, I was really interested in re-imagining Swan Lake as a comic, but never got far with it and put it to the side. The story found its way back to me, and I'd love to have another go at it and work it into a graphic novel after I publish my debut graphic novel trilogy KLOUD 9 (coming in 2025!)
These are some rough character designs I was playing around with for my take on the Swan Lake characters. I wanted my Odette to be a magical Filipina princess, as my dream of helping work on the first Filipina Disney princess movie seems too far off at this point in my career. So I don't really want to wait, and I'm just making my own haha!

BEST MODERN FAIRYTALE ADAPTATION! ROUND 3, MATCH 4 OUT OF 4!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Princess Tutu (2002 - 2003) is based off the Ugly Duckling and Swan Lake; Ponyo (2008) is based off the Little Mermaid.
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Princess Tutu (2002 - 2003):
This show is PHENOMENAL. Starts as a fairy tale show, slowly starts to discuss fate vs free will and the archetypes that fairy tale characters have to play and what would happen if they could fight the narrative. Also has one of the most perfect endings to Duck's arc that any protagonist could ever have.
Princess Tutu ftw, let's be honest here
Ponyo (2008):
Ponyo loves ham! She won the Little Merpoll bracket and so deserves to win this one too

Swan Lake
For those of you who are not familiar with this story, I will give my interpretation. I only read it one time, so I didn't remember the names. But these are just details, right. So you know, it's not a fairy tale, it's a ballet. And… only yesterday I found out the story behind it. I watched it a couple of times and mostly enjoyed the music. It's very beautiful, magical even.
So… There is a prince who has reached marriageable age. His mother arranged a ball for him to choose a bride. But… He doesn't wanna get married, he's too young and free-spirited.
At night, he went for a walk in the forest (where else to go at night) and suddenly witnessed the transformation of a white swan into a beautiful woman. They talked for a while, and she explained that she had been cursed by an evil magician. She is a swan during the day and at night she's became a women (I have to say, it's very convenient, isn't it? No need to work, no need to take care of the house… Is it really a curse?). He promised to kill the magician to save her. But the curse requires the man to fall in love with her with all his heart (traditionally, but I don't think gender matters here). This only recently free-spirited prince swears eternal love to her.
An evil magician, in order to separate the lovers (no, really, they just met, where did such love come from?), brings his daughter to the ball, who looks exactly like a white swan. The prince introduced her to his mother as his future wife. The magician is happy, if the prince breaks his promise to the white swan, she will die (mister, what is your problem? You've already turned her into a bird, why do you wanna kill her? And if you wanna kill her, why didn't you do it in the first place? Again… a very odd villain's logic). But… The prince saw no one but the white swan, so he didn't break his promise. The wizard attacks the prince in pure rage and dies.
The curse is broken. Happy ending.
I feel sorry for the magician's daughter. She was nothing to the prince and, obviously, to her father as well. And in the end, she just disappeared into the background. It's so cruel. And who is the true victim here?
So in Villains our twins represent this poor thing. I can already feel the sad vibes of an unloved children coming from them…
And Darius is an evil magician. So maybe they at least explain why he hates this swan so much? What had she done to him to deserve this? There must be a good reason. At least, I hope there is...

Barbie of Swan Lake: Odette's Swan Princess —Aesthetic
Tumblr media
Princess Odette
In the end, as thanks for saving the Enchanted Forest, Odette is crowded a Swan Princess. Additionally, her father and Prince Daniel are discussing wedding plans. Thus, Odette becomes a future princess to their human kingdom. Despite all this, she remains humble, saying she achieved this because a friend once told her, "You’re braver than you think."

My top ten favorite Barbie movies
Like every young girl I loved the Barbie movies. These are some of my favorites. I like that they are timeless, that you can watch them in every age and still enjoy them like DreamWorks Trilogy Classics or Disney and Pixar Movies. They are still fun too watch and I am really happy the Masterpiece of the Barbie movie that Greta Gerwig created, accomplished this again with a deep meaning behind the story, which is why this movie is so great.
I also recently saw some of the new Barbie movie stuff that is animated and I have the feeling it’s no longer also for us old fans, it’s more for the younger audience. Which isn’t bad don’t get me wrong, it’s always nice to see when Barbie gets new fans, but with the old movies and the cinema version of Barbie I had more the feeling that it was for everyone. But the new Barbie dreamhouse show feels still for everyone. It’s a good show maybe not as iconic as life in the dreamhouse, which is still the best Barbie show today, but it takes another interesting turn on Barbie, her family and friends. I like that her parents got introduced, they are very nice and seem to love each other dearly, which is wonderful. Barbie herself is as always a great protagonist and I like that they tried to make her more relatable. Ken is a bit similar to his life in the dreamhouse self so he is still a dork but adorable, which suits him perfectly. They also have a Ryan and Raquelle, which are called Tammy and Tray. Which is fine but I would’ve liked if Ryan and Raquelle had a comeback in this, they were the best characters in the previous dreamhouse series.

Weird fairytale literature crossover, question what if The Wild Swans princes met the characters of The Swan Lake?
😅Sorry about the question😅
That would be such a neat crossover honestly, and one I haven’t seen done before, as far as I’m aware. If anyone does know of any media out there that has done this already, I’d LOVE to check it out!
Tumblr media
The princes and swan maidens would definitely bond over the trauma of their curses 🦢. I’d also love to see the villains of each story, Rothbart and the queen team up and cause havoc.
