For some people, fictional characters who lie about their identity seem to be a particular berserk button. At least it is among Disney fans; they seem to be harder on characters who do it than those characters really deserve.
For example, Disney's Aladdin. Yes, it's wrong that he lies about his identity and masquerades as Prince Ali. It's portrayed as wrong and he apologizes for it in the end. But when fans call him a "compulsive liar" or claim that his love story with Jasmine is toxic because it's "all based on a lie," aren't they going a little too far? First of all, he's clearly not a compulsive liar. He doesn't lie all the time, or just for fun; he does it because he loves Jasmine and she's required by law to marry only a prince. As for the popular claim that "their whole relationship is based on a lie," I think that would only be true if Jasmine fell in love with him because she thought he was a prince. But she doesn't. She first meets him as a street rat and she likes him then. When he tries to affect a different, "princely" personality as Prince Ali, she disdains him as just another pompous stuffed shirt like all the other princes who have courted her. She only falls for "Ali" when he shows her his true personality again. The fact that he still hides his true identity from her is wrong, but it's not some horrible advantage-taking, the way some fans portray it. To me, that claim seems just as faulty as "Beauty and the Beast is about Stockholm Syndrome"!
Or how about the fans of Mulan who insist that Shang does nothing wrong by dismissing Mulan after the reveal of her gender and refusing to believe her about the Huns' survival. "It's not because she's a woman," they say, "it's because she lied to everyone and joined the army illegally." Never mind that she only did it to save her father's life, or that the law is clearly unjust – Shang himself already went against it by sparing her life after the reveal – or that Mulan is the one responsible for the victory for which Shang and the other soldiers are being celebrated, yet getting no credit. Shang and the other soldiers' expressions show that they feel guilty and torn about this, both before and after Mulan arrives. Shang clearly feels pangs of conscience when Mulan says "You said you'd trust Ping. Why is Mulan any different?" So why do some fans bend over backwards to defend him and implicitly shame Mulan for disguising herself?
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this subject?

A whumpee convinced they are sick.
I can do that for you! Please enjoy.
Warnings: poisoning, manipulation, false identity
"I don't feel good, Teammate One, I'm being serious," Team Leader said as they collapsed into the nearest chair. They were tired. Their bones hurt. And everything felt wrong.
Teammate One looked over at Team Leader, "I'm sure you're just stressed out. We've been doing a lot of missions lately. You just need to relax a bit."
Team Leader shook their head. They could feel sweat trickling down the back of their neck. "It's not that. I'm sick. I'm telling you."
"Well then just get Medic to check you out. But I'm sure you're fine. You just need to take a day off, Team Leader. We all do."
Team Leader got up on shaking legs. They slowly made their way to the med bay. This was the fifth time in five days they were going to see Medic. Each time Medic said they were fine, gave them a pill to relax and sent them on their way. "I'm sorry to bother you," Team Leader said as they stood in the doorway to the med bay, "but I really don't feel good."
"Hop on up on the table and I'll check you out. But you were fine yesterday, Team Leader. I can give you a little something like I did yesterday to take the edge off." Medic held out their hand, a small yellow pill in their palm.
"I felt worse after that, Medic. I don't want anything to take the edge off. I'm getting sick. I'm telling you."
Medic frowned as they closed their hand. "You need to sleep, Team Leader. Let me at least give you something for that. If you're sick it will help. And if it is just stress, it will help."
Team Leader considered a moment. They were so tired. Sleep sounded good. So good. But they needed to be sure they weren't sick. "I don't want to sleep all day."
Medic smiled. "I won't let you sleep all day. But you need sleep. Please, let me medicate you. Just for a bit."
With great reluctance, Team Leader nodded. They held out their hand for a pill. Medic shook their head. "I'm going to give it to you in a shot. Faster acting that way."
Team Leader swallowed. They lay back on the table. "Fine."
"Just relax, Team Leader," Medic said as they jabbed the needle into Team Leader's shoulder. "It will all be over soon."
Team Leader knew immediately something was wrong. Their bones were on fire. And they couldn't breathe. Panic filled them, but they could barely keep their eyes open. "I...I....I...."
"Shhhh," Medic said as they put their face very close to Team Leader's, "everyone will think that your heart gave out because of the stress. Only you and I will know differently."
Medic Whumper smiled. They had waited years for this moment. Years and years of earning the team's trust. Years and years of patching up the team instead of hurting them. Years and years building to this moment. And now as they watched Team Leader's eyes closed, their breathing shallow, Whumper felt elated. They had won.
"Medic," Teammate Two called from the door, "I need to talk to you about Team Leader."
Whumper whirled around, quickly pulling the curtain around the table closed. Wouldn't be good if Teammate Two saw Team Leader's current state. Wouldn't do to be caught and Team Leader was still alive.
"I was just going to come find you," Whumper said, their face grave. "I'm very worried about them. They're working too hard."
Teammate Two nodded, their face pinched with worry. "I know. I thought they would be in here with you. Have you seen them?"
"No. Not today." Whumper said quickly. Whumper's heart thundered in their chest as they heard a rattling sound behind them. Too soon. Not yet.
"Do you hear that?" Teammate Two said as they looked around.
"Hear what?" Whumper said as they took a step back towards the curtain. Team Leader's respiratory system was failing too quickly. Too loudly. They had to shut Team Leader up.
"What's back there?" Teammate Two said as they took a step forward.
"Just a project I'm working on. It's not done yet, I--"
But Teammate Two ripped the curtain back exposing Team Leader. Team Leader's face was pale, their mouth gaping open as they gasped for air. "Team Leader! What has happened?"
Whumper froze. They had been exposed. They had to fix this. "I can explain..."
Teammate Two began to shout. "What did you do to them? What did you give them. HELP!"
Whumper sighed. They had wanted to see Team Leader's heart stop. Had wanted to hear Team Leader take their last breath. But they didn't want to spend the rest of their life in a cage. And so they spun on their heel and ran. As Whumper ran past Teammate One, narrowly missing Teammate Three, they smiled. They had accomplished what they had set out to do. The likelihood of any of the team figuring out how to save Team Leader was slim. They had won. And it felt great.

I FORGOT I EVEN SENT THAT ASK AND YOUR RESPONSE HIT ME LIKE A TRUCK OHMSYGODDFJDJ
I seriously love your writing so much you always put a heap of emotion into it 😭😭
also adore the idea of TIM being the one who's obsessed with bear and going to such lengths just to keep seeing him, I tend to prefer happy endings so I like to think they work it out after a while but like also the angst is amazing
god the amount of yearning in this au makes me so mmmpfhhhf
god im just so sorry that it took me soo long to reply!!! you sent just as i was taking my break from tumblr and other social media :(((
i remember reading it and thinking to myself "god if i had the timbern brainworms, i could write smth for this" but then recently they've been coming back and i was a church bored out of my mind when i was like "hmmm maybe i should respond?"
and ohhh my god, when i first got it, i immediately thought about how toxic it could get and like, personally, i feel like i can't write complicated characters? if that makes sense? to me, im not very good at writing multi-dimensional characters. which to be fair, i never set out to become like a pulitzer prize winning author. i just do this for fun haha.
and like i knew that my answer to your ask was always gonna be toxic timbern but i didn't know if i could write it? ig??? bc like tim is a good person. he is!!! he just wants bear so badly. and it's past the initial physical attraction now.
he and bear are all grown up. he likes bear's wit and humor, well the wit and humor he gets to hear when bear doesn't know he's around. but bear wont let him in!!!! bear wont open himself up and tim's apologized!!!! he did!!! he doesn't even know what he did and he still apologized!!!!! and it changed nothing. bear doesn't talk to him or look at him or anything. nothing but polite professionalism.
and then one day, he sees bear on his balcony as he's swinging through the streets of gotham. and bear isn't doing anything special, he's just sitting there in sweats and no shirt and the moonlight hits his pecs just right and his shoulders are so broad and-
well he cant be blamed for stopping to take a peek, right? and maybe when he has has time he swings by more and more. just watching for longer and longer, until one day bear catches him. and as they stare at each other from opposite sides of the street, tim thinks this is it. the cold glances and frosty words are going to come back. bear's never gonna just sit on his balcony again. he's lost this too. but then-
oh.
bear sends him a hesitant wave and tim raises a trembling hand to wave back. and bear- well bear's mouth splits into a smile brilliant enough to rival the sun. beautiful like the sunrise. the promise of a new beginning. if he closes his eyes, tim thinks he can feel the sunlight's warm rays on him.
hes' hooked after that. he comes around again and again. one day bear lets him on the balcony. weeks later, bear's hugging him. weeks after that, tim's in bear's lap. and he knows it's not right. that bear thinks he's someone else. that bear doesnt want anything to do with him but how is he supposed to let this go? how is he supposed disentangle himself from bear's arms?
so he lies and he lies and he prays to any and every god he can think of, that he'll get to keep this. plus he's not really lying to bear, he's just... not talking about it! if bear asks, he'll tell him point blank. he swears it. but that's a problem for another day. things are looking up! bear said more than 5 sentences to him the other day and yesterday? he even got a small smile. it'll all work out. he'll be fine.

Evil Damian and Hero Raven AU
So think Damian as Robin, except instead of Talia actually needing Damian to be protected, it was all a ploy to get him close to Batman and the Justice League so that he could infiltrate them. He still joins the Titans, and after the news of Ras's death, he ultimately picks the League over the Titans and betrays them.
Only problem is that he loved Raven, and she loved him back. They were in a relationship and it broke her heart when he betrayed them. Think some really callous moment where the Titans are up against the League of Assassins and Damian then turns against the Titans and seems like he's actively trying to kill them. "Damian, what are you doing?" "It's time him to rejoin his family." "Damian, I thought we were your family." "You thought wrong" type shit. All the Titans immediately get pissed, but Raven just sort of freezes, she's shocked. Damian can't even look at her.
All the Titans retreat and make it out with their lives, albeit barely. Raven immediately goes and locks herself in her room. Damian is waiting for her. He holds up a detonator, telling her that if she alerts the other Titans he'll blow up half of Jump City. She's pissed, but isn't willing to call his bet. They fight about ideologies and the like, until he ultimately offers for her to join them. "I want you by my side." "Get the fuck out of my tower." "Just know, that all of it was real, Raven, everything with you, it was all real." "I know. And that is why I can never forgive you." Type beat.
SO THEN cue some epic moments such as:
-Damian being on the verge of death in battle and Raven healing him and then punching him square in the face, knocking him out and leaving before he wakes up.
-Raven getting captured by the League, Damian once again asking her to join him, her refusing by saying "I've had enough of demons trying to use me to take over the world". Her getting taken prisoner and begging him to quit the League, him refusing.
-Shiva bringing an injured/on the verge of death Damian into Raven's cell one day. "I should just let him die" "You should. But you won't." "And how do you know that?" "Because you love him. And part of you still hopes that he loves you enough to leave all this."
-SPARKS FLYING CRAZY BATTLE TENSION.
-Damian visiting Raven after a battle. "I hate you" "I know you do, Beloved." "Just for one night." "Only the one."
