The Men on the Sea

1. As Nebula came to observe, there was an instance where she faced the rough torrents of the sea to travel. 2. She, amongst these men, was welcomed as a woman, for her minor practice in drawing in fish to eat, and as an omen of good luck. 3. It was hours before their departure, and one of these men approached Nebula. 4. "Strange mistress, why have you agreed to come with us?" 5. "To observe." 6. She had no hesitance in speaking her truth, leaving the man ever more curious. 7. "Observe what, precisely? You have known us for some time now, as a healer and wisdom within our community." 8. "I want to see what causes you to hesitate, I wish to observe what people fear closely. 9. In short, I wish to understand the difference between your fear, and your bravery." 10. This appeared to be more sensible than what the man first expected, thinking before he spoke again. 11. "You have seen fear, known it personally, yes?" 12. Nebula hesitated, as she had always known the outcome of things, she watched the Future as much as she had lived in the present. 13. She spoke honestly, "No. I have not known fear. I have seen things that are, and things that will be with clarity and calm." 14. The man shook his head, "If you do not know fear, then you can not know courage." 15. Nebula paused. There was no contempt from this man, knowing which way the wind has blown and which way the wind will blow has aided his home greatly. 16. Perhaps, however, it was time for one of the harder lessons for Nebula to learn. 17. "I ask of you, Lady of the Stars and Night Sky, look not into the future when we go out to sea. 18. Instead experience as we have, and face the present blind of the Future and all they hold." 19. Nebula thought for a time on the man's request. This was not a challenge to her power, no, never, instead it was a question of what Nebula could know in place. 20. "I will oblige your request, friend, and seek not what the Future has for us when we go out onto the water. 21. But take heed now, there is a storm approaching." 22. The man regarded the warning with great respect, telling Nebula 23. "This shall not be our first storm weathered together, and it shan't be our last either 24. I have faith that the Gods will guide us, as the Fates have guided you." 25. Thus the men and Nebula set out onto the water in the morn when all was calm, with not a sight of the storm. 26. For the first time, Nebula stepped blindly into the Future she could not see, and refocused her attention entirely on the Present. 27. She had her knowledge of the Past to guide her, but she pondered if it would be enough against the torrents of the storm. 28. So as the storm began, and the waves grew in size and strength, she aided the men on the ship as best as she could. 29. Her heartbeat grew quicker, her hands shaking as she fastened the ropes to the ship and worked to keep water from coming aboard. 30. She was afraid, unsure of if all her efforts were to change the course of their fate. 31. "NEBULA!" 32. A wave crashed over Nebula, engulfing her entire form and drenching her clothes. 33. She found herself out in open water, no rope to pull her back. 34. The water was cold to her, and she found herself staring up at the raging waters above, terrified to breach the surface. 35. She knew she must breathe eventually, or else rouse suspicions of her being truly alive or not, yet she found herself paralyzed by the choice. 36. She could sink, or she could swim. She could live amongst humankind and continue exploring, or live in the ocean for fear of being discovered. 37. She knew whatever choice she made would drive the course of her fate, not so much humanity's but her own. 38. Nebula's head breached the surface, and she swam toward the ship, pulling others onto the ship. 39. Extended were her antlers, with long, toughened rope tied to the branches as she pulled out the other members of the crew. 40. The men stood in awe of her, and she looked over to them. 41. "Courage is making the choice despite being afraid. 42. Courage is choosing to breathe and fight instead of surrendering to your own panic. 43. Courage is choosing to live despite all that will go wrong." 44. She sounded more assured in her observation and the man nodded to her. 45. "You know courage, and strength now as we do." 46. Nebula and the fishermen pulled the others back aboard, and Nebula stood, exposed as herself. 47. But she did not know fear, as these men had accepted her as she was. 48. Returning to shore, however, Nebula did hide her truest self once more. 49. The fishermen knew why now, that she could not be seen as anything more than human. They understood it as her observing humanity, learning to understand them as they had come to understand the Gods. 50. But even so, she found herself being treated with a little extra kindness, and from the man who had requested she not look to the Future for answers, but choose in the Present her actions to move forward, she found a small story inscribed in a tablet of something he would call "Starlings". 51. "An omen of good fortune are those blessed with courage, as they live and breathe and choose to continue on, even if the Future is uncertain, for theirs, is the blessing of Starling Nebula, a Goddess among Humankind."
