I wanted to do something nice for myself so I'm going to write a Choptop X my oc Kat short story. If people enjoy it I'll make a Part 2.

After a long battle with dealing with my abusive father, and taking care of my younger sister, I finally saved enough money to move away. I wanted to stay far away from my home state Kansas, and have settled on moving to a small town called Newt in Texas. I don't know much about Texas, or even the town itself, but from the few times I've been there it reminded me of my home town. So Newt was probably the best choice I had.

Checking how much gas I had left in my tank I drive over to a nearby gas station. It looked very run down. I assumed that the place was abandoned, so I was sorta surprised that a man came over to greet me. "Hello there ma'am, never seen you around these parts. You aren't around here are you?" "No sir, I used to live in Kansas but I just moved in. My name is Kat Valentine." "I'm Drayton Sawyer, I hope your move wasn't too difficult." "I had some problems arrive along the way but nothing I couldn't deal with. Do you have any gas?" "No ma'am, but show up tomorrow and we'll have some ready for ya." I nod and drive off to my new home hoping that by tomorrow I could fill up my car.

The next day I drove back to the gas station and to my luck they had some gas for me. After the man called Drayton filled up my car I gave him $20 and a tip. Driving off I set off to the nearest big city, wanting to get some things for myself. After driving for a few miles I finally entered one of the big cities. I drove around looking at all the businesses noticing a music store. I pulled into the parking lot and went inside. There was tons of albums from different artists of all genres. I immediately started looking for Plastic Beach a Gorrilaz album. Looking all over I noticed a odd looking man holding it. The man seemed to be a hippy, and he had pale skin, along with a birth mark going across his face. He also had the prettiest blue eye's I've ever seen which wasn't surprising considering most of the people in my hometown had brown eyes.

Despite hating public social interaction I decided to ask him where he found that album. Approaching him, I try to look slightly above his eyes so I didn't have to make eye contact. "Hello sir, I was looking for that same album you had in your hand. Could you tell me where you found it." I struggle to put on a natural looking smile, and mentally cussed myself out for sounding so strange. "Ah th-this one?" The man waves it in front of my face almost as if to brag about having it. "I-It's the last one h-honey, you'll have t-to come back n-next time!" He gives me a smile mocking me. Not wanting to deal with this I grab it out of his hand and starts running. "I'll let you have it back if you can catch me!"

The guy got down on his hands and knees and crawled after me like some kind of animal. But that was his first mistake. All I did was simply sit on him and raised the album high above me. He tried grabbing it, not realizing I weighed 115 pounds, and he could have simply just wrestled me for it and win. "G-Give it to me! I f-found it fair and s-square!" "Don't care, could have just gave it to me, but now you get to look like an idiot infront of everybody." The man gave me a look then pushed me off of him. I look up at him with the album close to my chest. "What? You didn't like me riding you or something? Wanted to be on top huh?" I hoped my flirting tactics would fluster him, so I could make my escape, but he just slightly blushed and looked down at me and laughed. "A-Arent you such a t-tease!" He grabbed the album from me with force. "Give it back fucker!"

He looked at me with excitement. "O-Or what?" I just stared at him not sure of what to say. "What's your name fucker?" Is all I could think to say. If I knew a little bit about this man I could possibly come up with a good threat. "B-Bobby Sawyer but everyone c-calls me Choptop!" He takes out a clothing hanger and scratched his head with it. "Wh-what yours?" "Kat Valentines..." I thought for a minute and remembered the name of the man who worked at the gas station. " I'm going to tell Drayton that you stole from me!" Yes I technically stole from him, but I wanted this album and I was willing to lie for it. He looked at me nervous for a second before speaking. "H-How do you know m-my brother?" "I met him yesterday, I was going to get gas for my car and we had a nice conversation." He stands up. "W-Well if you tell him anything, y-you'll regret it!" He then runs out of the store with the album.

All that work for nothing. I thought to myself before leaving to go back home. On my way home I decide to stop at the gas station again to talk to "Choptops" brother. That's right, I'm not giving up that easily. I want that damn album. I walked into the gas station and over to Drayton.

"Hello Miss Valentine, good seeing you again." He was holding a broom but didn't seem to be using it to sweep. "Hello Mr. Sawyer." I replied to him. "Haha please Mr. Sawyer was my grandfather." I give him a warm smile. "And Miss Valentine was my mother." We both chuckle lightly. "Just call me Kat." "Alright Kat, did you want to talk to me for a reason?" Thinking back at the album I nod to myself. "In fact I do, your brother has stolen something of mine." He gave me a frown and looked troubled. "I-I see." he thinks for a moment. "How about you come over for dinner tomorrow, and I'll have him return it to you then." I think about what's being said for a second. "For dinner? Oh you don't have to, I would just like him to return it." "Nonsense, you are new here, it would only be polite to to have you over for dinner." He kept insisting I stay for dinner so eventually I gave in and agreed.

The next day I didn't feel like getting out of bed, but in my search for that album I got up anyways and drove around town. Looking for the man who had what I so desperately desired, and after searching every small business I finally found who I was looking for..... On the side of the road waving at me to try and get my attention. I parked my car and got out walking over to him. "Got sum trouble with your truck here?" "D-Damn thing broke d-down on m-me." He started cussing in frustration. "Okay okay calm down, let me look at it." "You can't fix it, just drive me home!" I look at him annoyed. "Don't tell me what to do or I'll leave you here album stealer!" He replied with a tired sigh. I look at the engine to quickly learn that it over heated. "Good luck getting that fixed buddy." I set my arm on his shoulder. "Pl-please just take me home." He whined. "Give me that album and I will gladly do that." "Never!" "Okay..." I walk over to my car and get in. Choptop got into the passenger seat next to me. "I'm not taking you home until you give me that album." I stick out my tongue teasingly, only to be met with him pushing his lips against mine, and his tongue aggressively pushing against my own. Shocked I just sat there frozen until the kiss was over with. "L-Looks like I'll get to spend the d-day with you then." I keep quiet and drive off.

Though the drive was long it wasn't in silence. Choptop almost immediately turned on the radio and started talking to me. Telling me about his family and his interests. I would be lying if I told you I didn't find it cute whenever he talked about something he liked. His eyes would get big, and so would his smile. He would do hand gestures only stopping to scratch himself with the clothing hanger.

"K-Kat do you l-love music as m-much as I-I do?" I turn to look at him. "Mhm, my mother was a music prodigy before she died, so I grew up with different kinds of music." Mentioning that made him way more excited then before. He was practically vibrating like a woman's sex toy. "R-Really? D-Did she teach y-you how to p-play any i-instruments?!" I nodded and proceeded to name off a few that I knew how to play. He quickly cut me off tho. "Y-You should be the lead f-female singer in my b-band Cornbugs!" I was about to agree to it before realizing something.

"Hey you dirty thief, you need to give me back that damn album!" I hit him lightly in the arm. "I-I will, just agree t-to be the l-lead female singer i-in my band!" I sigh and give him a look. "Fine..." Choptop screams in excitement and gave me a kiss on my lips before pulling me into a hug.

You woke up, head hurting. You looked around, trying to recognize your surroundings. It was dark, too dark for you to see. You could feel the blood trickling from your head. 

You groaned, sitting up.

“H-Hello?”, you called out.

You tried to think, tracing back your steps. You were on a hunt. You went on a hunt, alone. Sam and Dean didn’t know where you were, John didn’t know where you were. 

You sighed, trying to stand up. You immediately fell back down, feeling immense pain in your leg.

You inhaled, shutting your eyes tightly.

You tried again, but couldn’t get up. You decided to crawl your way to the door.

You got there, but it was locked. You hit the door, trying to open it. 

“Someone! Help me!”, you yelled out. There was no response.

 You sat on the ground, no way up, nowhere to go. Your sight went blurry as your vision faded out.

A few days later…

You laid on the floor, your body fading. It’s been a week. Maybe more, maybe less. You were still trapped. You could barely move. Your body lost a lot of blood, you were dizzy. 

The worst part was your family didn’t even know where you were. They wouldn’t know what happened. 

You felt a few tears fall from your face. You just wanted to tell them you loved them, and that you were sorry for hunting alone.

“If anyone’s listening, j-just please tell my family I love them.”, you cried shakily.

Your back fell to the wall, slouched over. You didn’t have enough energy to sit up.

Your breath was shallow. You started closing your eyes.

You heard something break, jolting up. You scrunched your eyes, it was bright. You watched a man walk towards you. A man who wore a beige trench coat.

“S-Stay a-away.”, you said.

“I’m here to help you.”, the man said. 

He laid two fingers on your head, as you felt warmth go through your body. You sat up. You were healed, it was a miracle.

You exhaled.

“Who are you? What are you?”, you asked.

“I’m an Angel of the Lord.”, the man said.

“Angels? They exist?! Wait, what?”, you said, confused.

“Goodbye, young Winchester.”, the man said, as he started walking away.

“Wait! Winchester? How do you know me? Wait, come back! Please, I have so many questions!”, you called out.

You felt a wind, as you looked back to where he was. He was gone. You stared, baffled, walking out.

You made your way back to the nearest phone booth, calling John’s number.

“Who is this?”, you heard his voice.

“Dad? It’s (Y/N).”, you said.

“(Y/N)?”, he repeated.

You heard Sam and Dean from behind.

“Yeah, Dad it’s me.”, you said, your eyes watering.

“Where the hell are you?” he asked.

“I-I don’t know.”, you replied.

“Where were you for the past week?! Leaving Sam and Dean?! What were you thinking?!”, he yelled.

“I-I know. I’m so sorry, sir.”, you said.

You heard some commotion from the other side. Then, you heard Dean’s voice.

“(Y/N)! Are you okay? What happened? Where are you?!”, he asked.

“Y-Yeah, I’m okay. I don’t know where I am. Uh, I think I’m in Dallas. The sign says Elm Street.”, you read the street sign.

“O-Okay, don’t go anywhere. I’m on my way.”, Dean said, hanging up.

“O-Okay….”, you replied.

It was starting to get cold, but you didn’t really care.

You just wanted to see your family. But, you couldn’t stop thinking about it. About the angel.

“Dean!”, you ran to your brother, giving him a hug.

“(Y/N)!”, he said, holding you tightly.

“(Y/N)!”, you heard Sam’s voice call.

“God, I missed you guys!”, your voice broke. 

“We missed you too. What the hell happened?”, Dean asked.

“I-I went on a hunt. By myself. I know, I was stupid and careless and made a big mistake.”, you said.

“Damn right. A hunt? By yourself?!”, Dean said.

“I know. I thought it was gonna be easy. It was just a vampire. But, it turns out I was wrong.”, you said, looking down.

“How did you get out? A-And you’re okay?”, he asked.

“Dean, it was an angel!”, you exclaimed, a smile on your face.

“Another hunter?”, Dean asked.

“What? No! An angel! An actual angel! They’re real!”, you said.

“How hard did you hit your head?”

“Dean! I saw him! They’re real!”, you argued.

“What did he look like.”, Dean crossed his arms.

“W-Well, he looked human. He was wearing a coat.”, you said, trying to remember, but you didn’t remember much.

“Right, so a man, oh sorry, angel saved you?”, Dean said, not believing you.

“Why don’t you believe me? He healed me!”, you said.

“ Let’s go to the hotel room.”, Dean said, helping you into the car.

“I’m not making it up! I’m not crazy!”, you scoffed.

“Angels don’t exist, (Y/N). And I don’t think you’re crazy. I think you’re tired”, Dean rolled his eyes, getting into the car.

“Dean!”, you said.

“Let’s go, (Y/N).”, Dean said.

“I believe you, (Y/N).”, Sam said.

“Shut up, Sammy.”, Dean said.

“Thanks, Sammy. Looks like Dean’s being pissy for no reason.”, you crossed your arms, leaning back into the seat before Dean drove off.

Season Four

It’s been some time since you last saw Sam and Dean. After John died, there was nothing keeping you there with them. Last you heard, Dean died.

You picked up your phone, getting a call from Bobby. 

“Bobby?”, you answered.

“Kid, come over to my house.”, he said.

“Why? Is everything okay?”, you asked.

“Dean’s alive.”

You ran into Bobby’s house, looking for Dean, You regret the last conversation you had with him, and how it ended in a fight. You regret that he died thinking you hated him. 

“(Y/N).”, Dean said.

“Dean.”, you exhaled.

“You know what to do.” he handed you a bottle of holy water and a silver blade.

You proved you were human.

“God.”, he came to you, giving you a hug.

“I’m sorry. For everything.”, you said, your eyes watering.

“Why? It’s not your fault. I’m so sorry, (Y/N). It’s all my fault.”, Dean said.

“Dean….”, you started.

“Here, come with me.”, he said, directing you to where Bobby, Sam, and another man were.

You smiled at Bobby and Sam, trying to figure out who the other man was. He looked familiar.

“(Y/F/N), I am Castiel, and Angel of The Lord.” the man said.

Angel of The Lord 

Something about those words bought you a sense of familiarity. 

“I’ve seen you before……”, you started, thinking.

Then it came to you. Castiel was the angel who saved you. 

“When I was a kid! You saved me!”, you exclaimed.

“Cas was the angel? There actually was an angel?”, Dean asked.

“You weren’t supposed to die then. It was my job to save you.”, he said.

“God, I was such a dick to you. I didn’t believe you about the angel, and, well here he is.”, Dean sighed, rubbing his head.

“It’s fine, Dean. But at least now I know I wasn’t crazy.”, you tried to lighten the mood.

You looked around, there were grim faces on Sam, Dean, and Bobby.

“What’s wrong?”, you asked.

“(Y/N), there’s, uhm, something we need to talk about. Something that’s about to happen.”, Sam explained.

“W-What? What happened?”, you asked.

“You might wanna sit down for this....”

She loves his smile, it lights up the whole room, and he has the most infectious laughter. She will do anything to make him smile/laugh. He was the first boy she noticed as she walked out, she saw the smile and couldn't help herself. She was immediately drawn to him. She also loves his eyes and freckles. When they first met she found herself mapping all of his beautiful freckles, and got caught often. She was pretty shameless about it though.

B = Baby (Do they want a family? Why/Why not?).

Yes absolutely. She was an only child, and with two parents with very busy schedules she often found herself lonely. She always dreamed of having a big family, and she is extremely excited to start hers. That being said she is in no rush, she has a very demanding career herself, but when she finds the right person and they are both ready she will have no problem taking a step back. She is a talented songwriter and could easily make a living writing for others and take a break from touring. She wants at least 3 children, but could be persuaded to have 4.

Ellie is a huge cuddler, as previously stated she was often lonely growing up, so she always longed for the comfort of physical touch. She loves to be the little spoon, but doesn't mind being the big spoon on occasion. If they are on the couch together watching a movie she will always curl up on his lap or on his chest. Or she likes when he will lay his head on her lap, and she will stroke his head/ play with his hair. When he is in the kitchen baking, she will come up from behind and hold him and kiss between his shoulder blades. She is very physically affectionate.

D = Dates (What are dates with them like?)

Dates are usually not too extreme, she loves to plan something at home. She grew up in the spotlight, and knows how unforgiving it can be, so she doesn't love going out and having paps in her face and personal business. That doesn't mean she is boring though. She likes to have MasterChef competitions with Bobby, or cupcake wars. She will turn their backyard into a drive in movie theater, or turn the office into a ball pit. She is very creative! 

E = Everything (You are my ____ (e.g. my life, my world…))

You are my sun, and my shelter. Ellie had gotten used to being the sun for everyone else, but Bobby had quickly shown her he was ready to be the sun for her too.

F = Feelings (When did they know they were in love?)

The moment she stepped out of the villa and saw his smile beaming back at her she knew she was in trouble, but when they were making out and found themselves on the ground and Bobby mentioned it being something to embarrass the grandkids with she knew for sure. Then when she was sent to hell aka casa she knew her life would always be brighter and happier with him in it.

G = Gentle (Are they gentle? If so, how?)

Ellie is very gentle. Her friends always called her the mother hen of their friend group. She has such a sensitive and compassionate personality, and genuinely cares and worries about the people around her. She will go out of her way to make sure someone’s day is brighter. She is very socially aware, and can often read when people are struggling even when they don't say anything. When she notices someone having a bad day she will do anything to turn it around, usually with some form of humor. She has a hug and a listening ear at the ready always for anyone who needs it, or a joke ready if hugging isn't your thing.

H = Hands (How do they like to hold hands?)

Fingers intertwined, always. She never wants to let go.

I = Impression (What was their first impression?)

She walked out of the villa the breath caught in her chest, he was so beautiful to look at, and she immediately could feel he was such a warm soul. His smile was like being wrapped in a blanket fresh out of the dryer. Then when he spoke and made her laugh she knew no one else would compare to him. Her mind was made up immediately.

J = Jealousy (Do they get jealous?)

I mean doesn't everyone get jealous to a certain extent? She is a pretty chill person for the most part, and if she is jealous she wont vocalize it. It will make her feel insecure more than anything but she is pretty quick to bounce back.

K = Kiss (How do they kiss? Who initiated the first kiss?)

Bobby technically initiated the first kiss during truth or dare, but she definitely took it further by kissing him back passionately. She initiated their real first kiss on the day beds. As I said she is very physically affectionate, and she wanted him to know she was serious about giving them a shot. She is a very intentional kisser, when she kisses you, it means something.

L = Love (Who says ‘I love you’ first?)

Bobby said that he loved her first, but she was so fast to return the sentiment its not even funny. She had been trying so hard to hold off saying it, because she knew deep down Bobby would want to say it first. So the moment it escaped his perfect lips she was ready.

M = Memory (What’s their favorite memory together?)

In the villa her favorite memory is the cake decorating, she loved seeing Bobby in action with his passion, and then eating the entire cake afterwards and seeing his face light up with happiness and admiration was *chefs kiss*.

Outside of the villa her favorite memory will be when Bobby proposes. She will remember it forever.

N = Nickel (Do they spoil? Do they buy the person they love everything?)

Material things have never meant that much to Ellie, but with that being said if she sees something that reminds her of Bobby of course she will buy it! Her spoiling usually comes in the form of service, she is always doing little considerate things for Bobby. 

O = Orange (What color reminds them of their other half

Yellow, he is her sun and her warmth. Everything about him screams yellow to her.

P = Pet names (What pet names do they use?)

Sugar Boo, cupcake, big man, or love.

Q = Quaint (What is their favorite non-modern thing?)

She has a music box that her parents got her for Christmas when she was 8. She listened to it for hours when she was little, and she still pulls it out when she is feeling anxious. She had a strong love for music from an early age, it was often her only companion. Music has a way of touching your soul that nothing else can really seem to do.

R = Rainy Day (What do they like to do on a rainy day?)

She loves to curl up on the couch with her sugar boo and a warm blanket to watch a movie or read a book. Give the girl some candy and some popcorn and you are golden! She will sometimes pull Bobby out to dance in the rain though even though he claims to not like it, his face always lights up with childlike wonder. 

S = Sad (How do they cheer themselves/others up?)

Listening to music and dancing will always make her feel better. She also will seek out Bobby’s companionship if he is home. He always knows how to calm her down and put a smile on her face. She will also cook or bake when she is sad or stressed. She always loved cooking growing up, and knows how to make some amazing comfort food!

T = Talking (What do they like to talk about?)

She loves talking period! She can sometimes be a little shy, but once she knows you and is comfortable with you she will talk to you about anything and everything. She can keep a conversation going, and loves to make people laugh. Her inner crack head will come out for sure once she trusts you so watch out!

U = Unencumbered (What helps them relax?)

Music and dancing! Cuddling, watching a movie, and eating comfort food! Bobby will always whip something up when he notices she is stressed out!

V = Vaunt (What do they like to show off? What are they proud of?)

Bobby of course, she knows sometimes people look at him and only see is clownery surface, but she is so proud of him and how hard he works to achieve his dreams! She also is very proud of her music, she writes new music daily, but she is a perfectionist, so she will only show off the music she is most excited about.

W = Wedding (When, how, where do they propose?)

Bobby proposed to Ellie after 8 months of dating, he couldn't help himself. He proposed at their home, but set up an entire scavenger hunt of their memories together. They got married a year after that.

X = Xylophone (What’s their song?)

Oh this one is hard! She has so many songs, depending on her mood! 

Her song for Bobby: Lover by Taylor Swift or My person by Spencer Crandall

Her song for when she is sad: Inside out by Mokita. That song hits so personally.

Y = Yes (Do they ever think of getting married/proposing?)

Absolutely, she cant wait to get married and start a family.

Despite my doubts, I fell back into Supernatural, deep into it, and I am now rewatching it. Who Is Harry Belafonte?

Harry Belafonte struggled with poverty and turbulent family life as a child. His professional career took off with the musical Carmen Jones, and soon he was burning up the charts with hits like "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" and "Jump in the Line." Belafonte has also championed many social and political causes, and earned such prestigious accolades as the National Medal of Arts.

Early Life

Harold George Belafonte Jr. was born on March 1, 1927, in New York City, to Caribbean immigrants. His mother worked as a dressmaker and a house cleaner, and his father served as a cook on merchant ships, before leaving the family when Belafonte was a young boy.

Belafonte also spent much of his early years in Jamaica, his mother's native country. There, he saw firsthand the oppression of blacks by the English authorities, which left a lasting impression on him.

Belafonte returned to New York City's Harlem neighborhood in 1940 to live with his mother. They struggled in poverty, and Belafonte was often cared for by others while his mother worked. "The most difficult time in my life was when I was a kid," he later told People magazine. "My mother gave me affection, but, because I was left on my own, also a lot of anguish."

Early Career

Dropping out of high school, Belafonte enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He returned to New York City after his discharge and was working as a janitor's assistant when he first attended a production at the American Negro Theater (AMT). Mesmerized by the performance, the young Navy vet volunteered to work for the AMT as a stagehand, eventually deciding to become an actor.

Belafonte studied drama at the Dramatic Workshop run by Erwin Piscator, where his classmates included Marlon Brando, Walter Matthau and Bea Arthur. Along with appearing in AMT productions, he caught the eye of music agent Monte Kay, who offered Belafonte the opportunity to perform at a jazz club called the Royal Roost. Backed by such talented musicians as Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, Belafonte became a popular act at the club. In 1949 he landed his first recording deal.

By the early 1950s, Belafonte had dropped popular music from his repertoire in favor of folk. He became an avid student of traditional folk songs from around the world and performed in such New York City clubs as the Village Vanguard.

Movies

During this time, Belafonte was finding success as an actor: Debuting on Broadway in 1953, he won a Tony Award the following year for his work in John Murray Anderson's Almanac, in which he performed several of his own songs. Belafonte also appeared in another well-received musical revue, 3 for Tonight, in 1955.

Around this time, Belafonte launched his film career. He played a school principal opposite Dorothy Dandridge in his first movie, Bright Road (1953). The pair reunited the following year for Otto Preminger's Carmen Jones, a film adaptation of the Broadway musical (itself an adaptation of the Georges Bizet opera Carmen), with Belafonte starring as Joe alongside the Oscar-nominated Dandridge.

Belafonte enjoyed some success through his collaborations with longtime friend Sidney Poitier, including 1972's Buck and the Preacher and 1974's Uptown Saturday Night. He also made numerous television appearances in the 1970s and 1980s, including a guest spot on The Muppet Show, on which he sang some of his most popular songs. Belafonte also worked with Marlo Thomas on the 1974 children's special Free To Be... You and Me.

Belafonte returned to the big screen in the 1990s, first playing himself in the Hollywood-insider flick The Player (1992). White Man's Burden (1995), which co-starred John Travolta, was a commercial and critical disappointment, but Belafonte fared better in Robert Altman's Kansas City (1996), playing against type as a heartless gangster. He later starred in the 1999 political drama Swing Vote, and appeared in 2006's Bobby, about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

Music

The success of Carmen Jones in 1954 made Belafonte a star, and soon he became a music sensation. With RCA Victor Records, he released Calypso (1956), an album featuring his take on traditional Caribbean folk music. "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" proved to be a huge hit. More than just a popular tune, it also held special meaning for Belafonte: "That song is a way of life," Belafonte later told The New York Times. "It's a song about my father, my mother, my uncles, the men and women who toil in the banana fields, the cane fields of Jamaica."

Introducing America to a new genre of music, Calypso became the first full-length album to sell 1 million copies, and led to Belafonte being nicknamed the "King of Calypso." The singer also worked with other folk artists, including Bob Dylan and Odetta, with whom he recorded a version of the traditional children's song "There's a Hole in My Bucket." In 1961, Belafonte had another big hit with "Jump in the Line."

Belafonte was the first African American to win an Emmy, for Revlon Revue: Tonight with Belafonte (1959), and the first African American television producer. In 1970, he teamed up with singer Lena Horne for a one-hour TV special that showcased their talents. Belafonte continued to release albums into the 1970s, though his output slowed by the middle of the decade.

Social and Political Activism

Always outspoken, Belafonte found inspiration for his activism from such figures as singer Paul Robeson and writer and activist W.E.B. Du Bois. After meeting civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1950s, the two became good friends, and Belafonte emerged as a strong voice for the movement. He provided financial backing for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and participated in numerous rallies and protests. Belafonte helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, in which King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech and met with the civil rights leader shortly before he was assassinated in 1968.

During the mid-1960s, Belafonte also began supporting new African artists. He first met exiled South African artist Miriam Makeba, known as “Mama Africa,” in London in 1958, and together they won a Grammy for Best Folk Recording for their 1965 album, An Evening with Belafonte/Makeba. He helped introduce her to international audiences and called attention to life under apartheid in South Africa.

In the 1980s, Belafonte led an effort to help people in Africa. He came up with the idea of recording a song with other celebrities, which would be sold to raise funds to provide famine relief in Ethiopia. Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, "We Are the World" featured vocals by such music greats as Ray Charles, Diana Ross and Bruce Springsteen. The song was released in 1985, raising millions of dollars and becoming an international hit.

Over the years, Belafonte has supported many other causes as well. In addition to his role as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, he has campaigned to end the practice of apartheid in South Africa and has spoken out against U.S. military actions in Iraq.

Belafonte has sometimes landed in hot water for his candidly expressed opinions. In 2006 he made headlines when he referred to President George W. Bush as "the greatest terrorist in the world" for launching the war in Iraq. He also insulted two prominent African American members of the Bush administration, General Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice, referring to them as "house slaves." Despite media pressure, he steadfastly refused to apologize for his remarks. In regards to Powell and Rice, Belafonte said they were "serving those who continue to design our oppression."

Awards

Belafonte has achieved some of the highest honors possible over more than a half-century in the public eye. He was a recipient of Kennedy Center Honors in 1989, the National Medal of Arts in 1994 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. Additionally, in 2014 he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Governors Awards.

Belafonte lives in New York City with his third wife, photographer Pamela Frank. The couple wed in 2008. Belafonte had two children with second wife, dancer Julie Robinson, as well as two other children from his first marriage, to Marguerite Byrd. (source)
