We 'touched' on touch before but I'll reiterate. Sydney was well out of Carmy's way before he touched her back in 2x02.
Another back touch in the very next episode. I consider this part of the blocking and revealing subtext in season 2.
Blocking is another layer to give the audience the story and establish the characters' relationship. Nonverbal cues, such as proximity and touch, convey the characters' relationships.
Blocking is meticulous - every touch and movement matters on camera and is rehearsed before the final shot. The rehearsal process allows actors to craft their movements artfully, revealing subtext, establishing relationships, directing focus, and creating compelling compositions for the camera.
If I focus on Carmy and subtext, I notice he touches the backs of the characters closest to him, such as Mikey's and Natalie's back in Fishes. Additionally, he touches Richie's back in 2x08 Bolognese.
In 2x02 and 2x03 there is a subtle message conveyed through Carmy's actions towards Sydney. As pointed out by @gingerylangylang1979 in a reblog, Carmy is guiding Sydney as he adjusts his environment to make it comfortable for her. He clears the debris and gently touches the small of her back as he takes his jeans out of a neglected oven. This gesture symbolizes his willingness to let Sydney into his world and build familiarity between them.
I really appreciate how the blocking in the scenes with Sydney and Carmy is so well done. Their conversations and arguments are choreographed in such a way that creates tension or intimacy. Even in the table scene, where there is no physical contact between them, the subtext is conveyed effectively through the clever use of dialogue, cinematography, and choreography.
Blocking is one of the things I look forward to analyzing in Summer of 2024!
Something so hot about Zeus and Hera being the prime example of an imperfect marriage and is shown to have many issues and yet both have no problem obliterating any couple who dares to compare their marriage to theirs or calls their spouse their names or that they loved each other more than the King of the Gods loves His Queen, Goddess of Marriage
