It's nearly two months after the Bicha poison has been purged from his system before Li Lianhua picks up a sword again.  He'll never be what he once was, will never be able to go toe to toe with Di-mengzhu and fight him to a standstill as he did in his youth.  But he misses it: the grace, the movement, the sheer joy of the dance of blades.  So he picks up Shaoshi, and he walks off into the forest, hyperaware of Di Feisheng following behind, eyes trained on him as though Li Lianhua were the only thing existing in his universe.
But hasn't it always been so?
Reaching a clearing, Li Lianhua slowly begins putting his body through the motions of the dance, weaving in and out through the bamboo, chasing an imaginary enemy as he moves through the steps.  Di Feisheng has come to a stop a safe distance away, leaning against a tree with his arms folding his sword close to his chest, but he steps no closer.  He seems almost afraid to interfere, to interrupt the dance before it's truly begun.  Perhaps even afraid of pushing Li Lianhua back into the protective shell of Lianhualou to never pick up a sword again.  But he can't stay away.  Can't move from that spot.
Many people had called Li XIangyi beautiful and meant it.  But only Di Feisheng had admired the dance as much as the dancer.  Di Feisheng's eyes remain on him throughout the entire dance, barely moving a muscle even to breathe until Li LIanhua sheathes Shaoshi at his side.  Li Lianhua returns to Lianhualou when he's finished, tired from the exertion but happy.
That night, Di Feisheng barely waits until Fang Duobing's footsteps have taken him up the first step to the second floor before pinning Li Lianhua against the wall and kissing him breathless.  He doesn't explain, and Li Lianhua doesn't ask.
He doesn't need to.
*
The next time Li Xiangyi picks up his sword, Di Feisheng is there, too.  And the next time, and the next.  He never interferes, never unsheathes his own sword to offer to spar, because that isn't the point.  The point is to give Li Xiangyi the space to rediscover what he loved about martial arts before the politics of the jianghu ruined it, before poison and betrayal stole both his strength and his joy in the sword.  The point is the way a soft smile that alights on his face every time this dance comes to a close.
Di Feisheng doesn't want to bring the harsh clash of swords into that ease.
…until the day when he steps outside to follow Li Xiangyi to his practice to find that Li Xiangyi has tied a red ribbon to the hilt of his sword.
He watches, entranced, as Li Xiangyi dances a dance for him that he'd only danced for one other in his life.  He is so absorbed, in fact, that he doesn't notice the red ribbon flicking ever closer and closer towards him until it's wrapped around his wrist, until Li Xiangyi has pulled him across the clearing and into the dance, a sparkle in his eye that has been long absent and deeply missed.
From there, it's easy.  He's been watching Li Xiangyi so long, so often, that he's learned the steps of this dance without trying to.  He knows where Li Xiangyi's imaginary opponent would stand to counter the moves he's making.  It should be a surprise—it really isn't—when he figures out that the moves of the imaginary man in whose footsteps he's walking so closely and naturally resemble the steps of his own swordplay, as though Li Xiangyi has been dancing with him all along.
And from that point on, whenever Li Xiangyi picks up his sword and heads into the woods, Di Feisheng goes too.  And there are very few moments when their swords clash against each other, but when they do, it's just another part of the dance, adding music to the steps, percussion to follow as they move together.
It isn't the fight Di Feisheng thought he wanted when they found each other again...
...somehow, it's even better.

I love Wei Wuxian, okay? I do. I adore him.
...but what the hell was he thinking dressing in his signature clothes/style, acting like a chaotic gremlin as if he wasn't always, playing the same tunes to control Wen Ning on Dafan Mountain and actually expected no one to recognize him???
Bro got so lucky that zidian couldn't detect sacrifice summoning bc he would've been gone so fast--

Last song? - Star Walkin' -Lil Nas X

Currently reading? - The Heretic Royal- Shelly Laurenston...and waaaay too many fanfics to list.
Currently watching? - The Blood of Youth, I tried Heroes but the vibe of the first episode said major trauma, I looked it up and it's considered a tragedy. Can't do it, need a happy ending.
Currently consuming? - Made some ravioli that gave instant and brutal heartburn.....will pass on that again.
Currently craving? - Cheese Filled Crumb Coffee Cake by Entenmanns. They don't sell it where I'm at anymore and that make me sad. Others have tried to replace it, but they're just not he same.

As Nie Huaisang poured their tea, Jiang Cheng rubbed his thumb against the carved wooden box in his lap and tried not to fret over what the other man was thinking. He knew what he looked like: the white streak at his temple announced it all. Jiang Cheng's cultivation was failing, and with the discussion conference tomorrow, it would be impossible to hide. Not even the reputation of Sandu Shengshou could shield him from being known now.
"Jiang-xiong, if you brought me a present, you have to give it to me," Nie Huaisang said behind his fan. His eyes seemed amused, at least, maybe.
"I know that," Jiang Cheng said, flustered and annoyed for being so. He placed it on the table between them.
Nie Huaisang tapped his hand with the closed fan where he hadn't yet pulled it away, and Jiang Cheng snatched it back to his lap. "It's a beautiful box, Jiang-xiong, but you can't keep it, either!"
"We're supposed to drink tea first," Jiang Cheng groused as Nie Huaisang's dainty fingers opened the lid.
"No, I distinctly recall the Gusu edict that states gifts are more important than anything," Nie Huaisang said. "If it's on their wall, you know it's orthodoxy itself. Oh, what are these?"
In his hands, the brilliant pressed ink cakes were even more beautiful. He was holding the azure bird, and his skin glowed against it. "One of the painters in Lotus Cove has... eccentric ideas. She's been experimenting with pigment and ash combinations. These are her more stable creations, but even then, they're not as permanent as standard ink. But, well." Jiang Cheng pulled a small book out of his sleeve and handed it over. "Here."
Nie Huaisang pulled his bottom lip into his mouth, darted a glance at Jiang Cheng's face, and then set the ink cake back into the box. "I don't have enough hands," he whined, but he took the book graciously. Page by page, his expression grew sharper; a slight flush brightened his cheeks. "A generous gift, Jiang-xiong."
Jiang Cheng swallowed. "She said the pink is especially fleeting, so you shouldn't hang anything with it in direct sunlight," he said gruffly. "Some of them have inclusions that make them act unpredictably in water. It's... You'll have to work with them a lot. To know how they'll perform."
"This kingfisher shimmers with true to life colors," Nie Huaisang murmured. After a moment of silence, he said, "I haven't painted in a long time."
"I know," Jiang Cheng said miserably. At the other's look, he added, "The fans from the last few years weren't your style."
Instantly, Nie Huaisang's fan was between them again. Jiang Cheng looked away, neck hot.
After a tense silence, Nie Huaisang said, "Jiang-xiong, would you tell me if something was wrong?"
"You know something is."
"Can something be done?" Nie Huaisang paused. "Gusu healers, perhaps?"
Jiang Cheng scoffed. "What Lan would help me? Hanguang-jun has never hidden his disdain for me, and Zewu-jun seems determined to live on darkness and silence forever. The Lans who would graciously ignore the feelings of one can't forgive me for being associated with Jin Guangyao and Guanyin Temple, for not noticing a-Ling's xiao-shushu was a treacherous minx who had beguiled the First Jade and would hurt his precious feelings later. As if I've ever picked up on anything like that before."
"How is Jin-zongzhu?" It was hard to read Nie Huaisang's tone, but that wasn't new.
Jiang Cheng fiddled with Zidian, tugging the chain. "He has his friends, his duties, and his shibo."
"Not his jiujiu?"
"You know how Wei Wuxian is," Jiang Cheng said.
Another pause. "I suppose I do." Nie Huaisang picked up and repositioned ink cakes for a moment before asking, "Does he know?"
"Unless the Jin spies defected, yes."
Nie Huaisang rapped his knuckles with the fan, and Jiang Cheng looked up at him. "He should have heard it from you."
"You don't get to tell me how to die," Jiang Cheng snapped.
Nie Huaisang looked bored. "Oh? Then why are you here?"
"This is why tea is supposed to be drunk first," Jiang Cheng said peevishly. "The entire pot is cold now."
Nie Huaisang draped himself over the couch and fanned himself. "You're a thorough person, Jiang-xiong. You must have an heir to announce tomorrow; likely, one of your usual retinue to these things. Not your head disciple, for as dear as that boy is, he doesn't have the head for politics, and politics and reputation have kept YunmengJiang safe. Chen Helin?" At Jiang Cheng's sharp look, he added, "I pay attention to you, too, Jiang-xiong."
"If you know everything, why ask?"
"No one can know everything," Nie Huaisang said gently. "I very often know nothing and must hope for the best. QingheNie hasn't fallen yet, which suggests even caged birds in pavilions aren't always prey." He looked at the box. "You want me to paint again. Why now?"
"After," Jiang Cheng started. He wasn't used to seeing Nie Huaisang's entire face. He wasn't used to seeing Nie Huaisang in soft, unembroidered robes. He wasn't used to seeing Nie Huaisang's hair down from its braids. "After," he repeated, "I didn't ask about your leg."
Nie Huaisang waited, but then murmured, "It healed."
Jiang Cheng swallowed. "I was selfish. I didn't want to think about it. I didn't want to think about Chifeng-zun's body or what seeing it in pieces would do to you, because I can't—things are better when you don't think about them. But you stopped painting when he died, Nie-xiong, and all I did back then was scold you for not knowing how to triage your sect in its grief. In your grief." Here, the traitor that used to be his body swelled, and the foreign wave of mourning filled him once again. "You should paint," Jiang Cheng said through tears.
"Oh." Nie Huaisang opened his mouth, and then he closed it, simply looking at Jiang Cheng. "Come here," he said, patting the couch.
Obediently, Jiang Cheng moved to sit next to him.
"Good, good. Put your face here, please."
Jiang Cheng hesitated, but was it wrong to seek comfort when invited? He hadn't asked for it. Nie Huaisang probably didn't know how much he needed it, so it wasn't like he pressured him into it. He fell forward and pressed his face into Nie Huaisang's neck. Engulfed by the complex herbal and spice blend preferred in Qinghe incense and Nie Huaisang's sweet, peppery chrysanthemum, he simply breathed.
"You helped me a lot back then, Jiang-xiong." Nie Huaisang was a little cooler than him, since their cultivation levels were so different, but it was refreshing on his heated cheeks. "Maybe you were stringent, but someone fussing at me to take care of my duties was comforting." His hand moved to the back of Jiang Cheng's head. "I'm sorry I didn't go to Lotus Pier and make a complete nuisance of myself when you needed one."
"I didn't expect you to."
"Why?"
"They said I killed your friend."
Nie Huaisang's hand tightened in his hair. "Weren't you my friend?"
Jiang Cheng didn't want to say that he didn't know, so he said nothing.

I think about HuaiSang and I'm like haha funny little clown man. he's so smart for making everyone think he's incompetent while actually being seven moves ahead of them in five-dimensional chess. falling over LXC and JGY while sobbing in one move? peak comedy, 10/10, love episode 40 so much. "The problem has resolved… but new problems have appeareddddd" he's just like me for real
And then I remember that he misses his brother and was made to help kill him, that he wanted his old friend so much that he brought him back to life so he could make everything better. That he has spent almost twenty years behind a mask of his own devising and that he might not even know who he really is anymore. That my little lad who just wanted to be an artist and paint willow trees and collect fans has become as much a warrior as the rest of the Sunshot generation. And then I want to cry

you ever wake up and think about nie huaisang's entirely off-screen journey?
(thirteen years.) do you think about how easy and yet nauseating it must've felt for nie huaisang to use his own childhood self as a mask? to maintain the appearance of a vapid child quick to run to others and whine instead of setting aside hobbies and trying to figure out how to work through responsibility?
(thirteen years.) what was he thinking? surely he didn't formulate everything to a tee in one sitting. how long had he taken until he was fully sinking into the balancing act of pretending he hadn't changed one bit in front of all the other clans, in front of his elder brother's close sworn brothers, while running the qinghe nie sect well enough behind the scenes to still maintain their unequivocal loyalty and respect?
(thirteen years.) do you think he hated himself now and then for becoming so quietly manipulative and focused on the ends over the means? looked at himself in the mirror at times and had to turn away because he saw a flicker of the one man he was trying to permanently unravel in revenge, the man his brother despised for always stooping to trickery?
(thirteen years.) how often did he get nightmares of qi deviations and being attacked, of that near-miss opportunity to save his older brother? the war and aftermath changed his school friends permanently and nie huaisang, in spite of his ability to worm his way out of things he didn't want to confront, was not an exception. how long until he got used to shoving his own squeamishness aside, accepting losses and violence and collateral damage and pain to other people for his own goals?
(thirteen years.) it drives me crazy. it drives me so damn crazy that mdzs is a story told from the perspective of wei wuxian. crazy that a few choice words and meaningful reactions at guanyin temple are the only reason we know even a fraction of what nie huaisang did over those years and why.
(thirteen years.) lan wangji and jiang wanyin were not the only ones who had to bear with the weight of time on their grief.
how many fans and paintbrushes can a person collect in thirteen years? (i don't know, i don't know, i don't know.)

Inter-Sect Politics for the Absolute Beginner
by Elpie (Horribibble) (@elpiething)
M, 3k, Wangxian
Summary: Today, with a formal missive from Koi Tower in hand and Zonghui staring at him with open concern, Nie Mingjue throws his head back and laughs and knows that no request will ever bring him such joy: Sect Leader Jin Guangshan has been brutally assaulted and, due to a conflict of interest, the Jin sect begs the assistance of the Honorable Sect Leader Nie Mingjue in the search for justice. - Wei Ying was raised in a brothel in Yunping, and Sect Leader Jin is having a very bad day. Kay's comments: Incredibly funny! Had me grinning the entire time. AU where Meng Shi was the one who found Wei Ying and took him in, offering him a home in the brothel. So, he grew up alongside Meng Yao and one day, when Jin Guangshan visits the brothel, Wei Ying is not going to stand by and look as his adopted family gets mistreated. Rest in pieces, Jin Guangshan's nuts. Excerpt: Without missing a beat, the young man laden in silks and ornaments and the almost tangible love of every courtesan in the room laden upon him like so much armor looks Sect Leader Jin dead in the eye and says, “A shitty lover, an angry drunk, but most of all an asshole.” Personally, Mingjue could not have asked for more. Except, perhaps, to borrow one of Huaisang’s fans to hide his face. “Young master,” Lan Xichen speaks up, ever the voice of gentle reason. “This is perhaps not the best defense…” For a moment, the youth stills, blinking at the elder jade, surprised by the sound of genuine concern. But then he takes a deep breath and plants his hands on his hips, clearly not having any of it. “It’s the truth.” He levels his gaze, once more, upon the gilded pervert. “You’ve got twenty kids at least, including A-Yao, so I know you know how a brothel works. You’re not new. If you’re coming into our houses to be a rotten bastard, you should just leave.” The only other man among the courtesans glaring death upon Jin Guangshan, has the spine to call, “Ying’er.” But Nie Mingjue suspects very little has ever deterred this man, least of all being called little baby.
pov wei wuxian, pov nie mingjue, canon divergence, canon era, wei wuxian isn't adopted by the jiangs, non-yunmeng wei wuxian, courtesan wei wuxian, brothels, bamf wei wuxian, jin guangshan being an asshole, justice, families of choice, crack treated seriously, humor, different first meeting

fandom asks: 6,10 and 12 for DMBJ? (@fan-man-huaisang)
Thanks for the ask, @fan-man-huaisang!
[If anyone else wants to send asks, here is the meme.]
6. when you first think of the fandom, what image comes to mind?
Already answered here.
10. what song do you associate with a ship?
Kind of answered here. Unless a song really smacks me across the face with how perfect it is for a person or a ship, then I don't really tend to associate them that way.
12. favorite hc for a ship, character, etc.
Xiaoge has the BIGGEST sweet tooth. And an appreciation for all kinds of other "unhealthy" food. Because he was never allowed that as a child, and then he didn't allow it to himself as an adult. And it wasn't until meeting Wu Xie and Pangzi that he figured out he was ALLOWED to want things. Even if they were frivolous things. Even if they weren't "good" for him or might get him out of peak fighting condition.
But the longer he was with Wu Xie and Pangzi, the more he understood that they didn't have an ulterior motive for wanting to know what he liked other than wanting him to HAVE the things he likes. The things that make him happy. And one day, once he'd started to trust in that a little, he maybe stole a dessert off of Wu Xie's plate. And when Wu Xie noticed, he wasn't mad (as part of Xiaoge expected he would be), he was DELIGHTED. And so Pangzi started making all kinds of sweet desserts and letting Xiaoge try them to figure out which ones he liked, and when Wu Xie discovered he liked street food, he indulged him in that whenever he caught Xiaoge looking at a food truck.
And between Wu Xie and Pangzi, they discover all of Xiaoge's favorite foods and favorite desserts and always make sure that the things he likes are readily available for him. ^_^

Proposal - Nie Huaisang
Tumblr media
Pairing: Nie Huaisang x f!reader
Word Count: 1669 words
Warnings/tags: none i think, the events leading up to the wedding, fluff
Notes: (C/N)-your clan's name, (Y/N)-your name
A/N: I planned this to be a one-shot but I got carried away, so the actual action *wink wink* will happen in the next chapter.
I did some completely unnecessary research for this (my adhd ass basically got distracted) but nothing specific. My cultural knowledge is from the show so I'm sorry for any possible mistakes regarding culture. This is my first time writing The Untamed. Also English is not my first language.
Part 2
You met Nie Huaisang at one of the cultivation meetings Jin Guangyao held in Carp Tower. You were a member of one of the smaller clans, so you didn't attend such gatherings in general. That one time your older brother insisted for you to come, as there were some issues to be discussed which might need your expertise as a healer.
During the many battles of the Sunshot Campaign, you actively participated in the healing of wounded soldiers, so many members from the bigger clans also knew you. So it was no wonder they were all pleasantly surprised to see you there at the meeting. After the greetings and toasts you were free to mingle, and almost everyone greeted you with a pleasant smile and grateful eyes. You also greeted them politely, asking about their family and health.
After a while you noticed that Zewu-jun were looking at you, wanting to invite you over to where he was standing with his brother Lan Wangji, Jin Guangyao and another finely dressed young man. As you walked over Lianfang-zun excused himself to greet the other guests. You turned to the remaining three men with a smile, and they bowed to you in return.
"(C/N)(Y/N). It's so nice to see you. What brings you here?" Lan Xichen asked with a small smile on his lips.
"Apparently, Lianfang-zun requires my help with something. And I took the chance to reunite with old acquaintances."
Lan Wangji stared at you in his usual way, not showing any of his emotions. You also wanted to ask what brought him here, but with a curt nod to you and his brother he also excused himself. Finally, you turned to the man now standing next to Lan Xichen. You had an attention to detail, so only a quick glance was enough for you to notice his handsome face and elegant clothing however, you didn't remember meeting him before.
"It's nice to meet you, Master...," you trailed off somewhat nervously as you didn't know how to address him.
He appeared lost in thought for a moment as he seemed to ever so slightly jump at your words. Still, he quickly schooled his expression into a calm and dignified look, but you could still see his nervousness underneath.
"I am Nie Huaisang. Pleased to meet you Lady (C/N)," he said as he bowed to you again, holding his fan in his hands.
As you realized your previous mistake, you were quick to return his bow.
"Ahh, please excuse my rudeness Clan Leader Nie."
He didn't seem offended at all as he glanced at you with a small smile, which appeared to be sad to you. You knew the story of his ascension to clan leader, after all his brother's death was still a widely discussed topic between cultivators. You also heard the various mean stories about Nie Huaisang himself, in which cultivators often referred to him as the Head Shaker or Good-For-Nothing. Stealing another glance at the man, he didn't seem quite as incompetent to you as these stories described him. He might not carry a sword and appear generally nervous, but you could also see the intelligence in his eyes. Right when you wanted to ask him about the situation in Qinghe, your brother called out to you to return to your tables. You exchanged bows with the two men again and returned to where your clan was sitting. However, you didn't seem to think about anything else that day but the handsome and mysterious Clan Leader Nie.
In the upcoming weeks you had the chance to meet with Nie Huaisang many more times, at political meetings and at night hunts too. You were not one to attend often, but as time went by you became more and more interested in the leader of the Nie Clan. As far as men go, he was the first one with whom you could always stir up meaningful conversations about various topics, not just politics or war. As someone who were always interested in music and arts, you found it exceptionally refreshing to listen to him talk about his passions, especially painting and his favourite fans. Looking at him, it always made you happy to see him quite relaxed during your conversations. After a while he even became bolder and started to show you his beautiful smile and laugh and you had to realize, that you, at the same time, started to fall in love with him.
Your brother always had a watchful eye on you two and he always let you know when he thought you spent enough time in the company of the clan leader. You understood his reasoning of course, so you always rejoined your family after a short conversation with Nie Huaisang.
After a few such meetings though, you started receiving gifts from him. At first you didn't know from whom they came from, but one time a messenger, who delivered some letters to your brother, handed you a neatly packaged hand-painted folding fan. It was the most beautiful thing you have ever seen, and you instantly knew who it was from. As you carefully traced the intricately painted lines on the fan with your fingertips your heart was beating so hard you felt it might jump out of your chest at any moment.
The next week your brother informed you that Clan Leader Nie requested a lunch with him and that you should also attend. Despite his reputation, everyone in your home made sure the preparation for the lunch were going smoothly. Everyone seemed excited to host such a high-ranking cultivator in your home. To say that you were nervous when the day finally arrived was an understatement. Actually, you thought you were never this nervous before.
During the lunch you were actually becoming calmer until your brother finally steered the conversation toward the actual meaning of the whole thing.
"Clan Leader Nie, may I ask the reason of your visit?" Your brother inquired after you exhausted all the general conversation topics.
Nie Huaisang seemed rather nervous too during the whole lunch, but looking at him now you were worried he might actually faint. Good thing you are a healer, you thought. For a few moments he sat there completely silent and almost motionless. Only his hands fiddling with his closed fan revealed his emotions. He looked up at your brother and opened his fan to hide behind it. The longer he spoke the quicker his hand moved the elegant accessory, and it seemed his face got redder by the minute.
"Clan Leader (C/N), as you probably noticed, we became quite well-acquainted with your sister. I would like to believe we became rather close even in the past few weeks. And you didn't seem opposed by my advances either. What I mean by all this is that...," he trailed off, even his ears were bright red by now. He appeared to be steeling himself for his next words. Finally he reluctantly lowered his fan and looked at you with frightened but hopeful eyes. God, you just wanted to hug him at that moment. But you couldn't, so you mustered your most encouraging smile and nodded at him. You were certain your cheeks were also red at that point. Nie Huaisang looked straight into your brother's eyes and said:
"I would like to ask for your permission to take your sister as my wife."
When he finally said it, it seemed like a huge stone was lifted off of his shoulders. His posture became more relaxed, but the fan opened again, only at his chest though, not covering his face. Now it was your turn to nervously glance at your brother. His face didn't show anger or disgust, only deep contemplation, which was a good sign, you thought.
"Clan Leader Nie, I am honored you think so highly of my sister. I have to say however, your bad reputation is not something I can ignore..."
"Gege!" You exclaimed, looking at your brother shocked and scared. Thinking back, you never thought your brother believed all those mean rumors about Nie Huaisang because he was just as good at reading people as you were.
"Meimei, let me finish," your brother said not even looking at you, a slight warning in his voice.
"Clan Leader Nie, as you said, I never opposed your relations with my sister. You seem to me an honorable man, and you never behaved inappropriately around her. But you have to understand, my sister's future depends on me. That's why I brought up your reputation. They say you are incompetent, but that's not what I see. I think you are very good at this whole political game. All I ask of you is to take care of my sister and don't let her reputation be ruined."
As he finished speaking you instantly turned to Nie Huaisang, who seemed to freeze, only his eyes turned impossibly big. His mind probably stuck to the same thought as yours, because that meant your brother actually agreed, right?
With his next sentence, he confirmed your suspicions: "I accept your proposal. If my sister agrees, she is yours."
You could only nod your head furiously as Nie Huaisang stood up and bowed deeply to your brother in thanks.
"Clan Leader (C/N), I assure you, your sister's happiness will always be my top priority. I will take care of her until my last day," Nie Huaisang said, his voice shaky.
As he straightened up, you could see his eyes glistening with unshed tears and you couldn't hold yourself back anymore. You basically jumped up, walked around the table and grabbed his shaking hands.
"I would love to be yours, Nie Huaisang," you said squeezing his hands.
He looked at you with that self-assured half smile you loved so much, and which he showed so rarely these days, but it always signaled some kind of mischief.
You didn't notice your brother looking at you two with a fond look on his face.
To be continued

'Make it stop, please make them stop!'
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶ Synopsis ✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
You used to think that you were good at hiding your emotions beneath the surface. Well simply because the hints you've been throwing at this someone you like have been getting ignored. On purpose or just his obliviousness? You have never told a soul about your affections, which hurt a couple of your crackhead friends, but in their defense, it was quite obvious to the naked eye what you both have been stressing over.
You were also quite sensitive to the other's feelings for you (said by them) and it hurts your friends' eyes to see the both of you pinning on each other but were clouded by self-doubt and overthinking.
So cue Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang scheming to get you to confess to each other.

Your head hurts when thinking about how the hell you got stuck here, in a small room, in a haunted house (or what Huaisang claims it to be). With the person you admit to being in love with.
Jiang Wanyin.
You sit with your back leaning on the wall, not making eye contact with the equally flustered man in front of you. Covering his face with his hand, trying to conceal the effect that the situation has on him. Not so slick really, but who are you to say that? when you are as stunned to be here as he is.
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶ ✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
It's now lunchtime in the Cloud Recesses, fluttering white robes pool at the entrance of the dining halls. Only just having finished their tasks and some lectures.
The light pitter-patter from the soles of their shoes can be heard and a few whispers thrown in secrecy. Disciples, afraid to be punished by the elders in the vicinity.
You keep your eyes open for a set of black and purple robes sitting, so you can grace them with your presence.
And there they are, seated on the near edge of the room. Odd why would they pick that place specifically? Unless we're in for knack of trouble again. You sigh out whilst striding towards them.
Wei Wuxian's eyes show a glimmer of mischievousness as he says albeit a little loudly,
"Well if it isn't our favorite person in the world, Aish so tardy what's got you so late? Jiang Cheng here was quite worried-"
A snicker can be heard from the person beside him, Huaisang. Which earns them both a smack in the head by the purple clad man.
You smile whilst sitting beside him, seeing it's the only space left. As both of the trouble makers are facing you.
"And you both didn't ouch, well at least someone did.."
You tease back only lightly, nudging the shoulder of your seatmate. Earning a flustered glare from him.
"Stop with your games." Jiang Cheng says firmly, Handing you a bowl of soup and utensils.
You give a sheepish smile in defeat to not piss him off further, "Okay, okay I'll stop. Thanks for leaving some for me, you're the best A-cheng"
You grab the soup in his hands, fingers touching for a brief second. Though it was enough to render you breathless, you hide it with a cocky demeanor.
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶On the other side of the table✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
"Do they think they're so slick with it....? I swear they're oblivious..." Wei Wuxian rolls his eyes at the pair in front of them as he whispers to his partner in crime.
"How do they not notice at all, it's stressing me out"
Huaisang nods fervently, fanning himself dramatically faster.
"Ugh, when can we make this stop...It hurts my soul just looking at them" Wei Wuxian groans, looking exasperated enough as it is. After all, he just finished copying a lot of the Lan clan's rules as a punishment.
"Well then let's hurry up with the plan," Huaisang, says menacingly, Betraying his always jittery demeanor. As they both snicker at the plan he concocted just a few nights ago.
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
"What are you both scheming again?" You say with raised eyebrows and a small smile. Curious about what adventures await from the both of them.
"Guys, you know I think you're the coolest and strongest people here-"
A scoff can be heard beside you, making you crack a grin.
"Just spill it out, what is it?" Jiang Cheng says with impatience.
"Ugh... Can you please, please come with me? I want to explore that abandoned house just on the outskirts of town!"
Huaisang whispers-shouts, with his hands clasped together pleadingly.
You nod, willing to go on an adventure as well. As place bores you to death, all of you sharing the look of agreement.
"I'm in, when will we do this little escapade of ours?"
"In a few days time, Qiren says that we have a test coming up and you know I can't fail, my brother will kill me now for real..."
Huaisang panics, before excusing himself in the library pavilion to study. Just now remembering it.
Wei Wuxian slumps on his chair, defeat evident in his face.
Guessing he'll have to endure a couple of days of this pure torture. "No A-sang come back, Why not now..."
"Go annoy your favorite Lan brother if you are so adamant about causing some trouble right now," Jiang Cheng says sarcastically,
"Ah, nice idea A-cheng.." His eyes light up 'Better than staying with you cowards!'
He saunters off with a grin, excited for some amusement.
"tch, that guy..." He says in disbelief, he wasn't even being serious about that.
"Wei Wuxian being Wei Wuxian, just let him be it makes him happy," You say in a soft tone. Wishing to have that carefree personality in life, your eyes following him.
"He enjoys being punished so much?", he sighs crossing his arms on his chest with a solemn expression "Hopefully he won't bite on something more than he can chew in the future with his antics"
You could only smile, gaze falling on him. He's such a worrywart for the people he cares about. Just odd at showing it.
You both sit there for a while enjoying the peace, after going through your separate tasks much to your dismay.
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
Now you are here in front of a shabby and abandoned looking house with your peers,
"That was close, Hangguang-Jun almost caught us"
Huaisang said clutching his fan with relief.
"Thank god we have Wei Wuxian here with us, Lan Wanji recoils at the sight of you."
Jiang Cheng grins out, patting Wei Wuxian on the back. Much to the black and red clad man's dismay.
"Hey, I would say that we have become good friends already!"
"Mhm, ask the ghosts in here if they want to be friends with you too. So we can have a safe passage"
You join in on the teasing, moving to the door. Wanting to get on with the exploring already, Huaisang follows suit with a smile.
"Why am I friends with you guys again?" He pouts dramatically, a rhetorical question that you don't bother to answer.
You all look into the house, debating on who should go first,
"Aish just go in and stop your sulking"
You ruffle his hair, at the same time pushing him in first.
"Cowards" He mutters under his breath yet walks in anyway,
The light from the sun outside dims as you all move in deeper. A chill permeated in the air.
Huaisang is far behind the group, clutching onto your robes
"It's so dark someone make a palm tor-"
The sound of something heavy falling cuts you off, Readying your sword in hand.
"What the hell was that mhmp-"
The sound of Jiang Cheng getting muffled out by something worries you, making you call out to him loudly.
"Wei Wuxian? Where is he?" You ask him but there's no response, not knowing where they're both gone you were about to light a palm torch-
Getting cut off again by Huaisang's shrill screech behind you,
"Ah, there's a ghost help me, help me!"
He jumps onto your back, almost outbalancing you,
"Huaisang- I'm trying, get off! How can I fight with you on top of me!-"
He moves around sporadically making you stumble around, dropping your sword,
"Gah A-sang I can't see- ugh get off. You're choking me-"
You struggle under his struggling, for someone who doesn't train as much, Huaisang can get pretty strong when scared.
You get dragged by another person by your wrist, and though it doesn't feel like a monster you still can't help but try to struggle in their hold. Your friends, Like they're both two different people, not listening to your pleas and shouts.
You hear some screams and banging from a door.
It sounds like Jiang Cheng- thank god he's all right,
A door creaks open as you get pushed quite harshly into wherever your sight is is a blur.
You brace yourself for a harsh fall, eyes clenched shut,
Only to be met with a firm wall-? You didn't get hurt as it broke your fall
Arm snake their way to your side to stabilize you.
You stiffen, maybe it's one of your abductors. Almost giving them a harsh slap but thankfully you stop yourself in time to see a familiar face.
"A-cheng..."
You sigh in relief, almost falling back onto his chest with your gladness...
His chest-? You freeze in your place in disbelief,
Meeting his flushed gaze, he mutters 'Are you okay?'
You quickly fall back, face flushing with color as well,
"Sorry- sorry I didn't mean to do that you see people pushed me in here-"
You stutter out, pointing to the already closed door. This looks so bad.
"Where are the others?" You ask flatly, finally catching your breath and calming down.
"They're the ones that pushed us here." He says darkly, pissed at their intentions.
"But why?..."
"Hey, are you all okay there?" A voice resounds from the other side of the door, It's all sickeningly happy and sing-songy, Must be Wei Wuxian.
"Wei Wuxian! Cease your jokes, Let us out!" Jiang Cheng exclaims, standing up to continue his banging on the door before you rudely interrupted.
"No, You both have been insufferable!"
"Isn't that supposed to be your job? Why are we the insufferable ones now," You nip back in confusion,
"Huaisang- let us out, stop following that idiot's schemes..."
Moving to the door as well, You say softly. Hoping to get his mercy.
"Hmm, sorry then all my planning would go to waste..."
He says leisurely, "Don't worry, this will all be for the very good of all of us. So you'll still owe me another escort after this!"
You could envision him saying that with a smile, you really won't trust him after this that's for sure.
"I will break both of your legs off when I find a way out of here" He stops his banging, looking for more plausible exits in this small room.
"Hmm there's nothing you could do to get out A-cheng, all you both have to do is confess your hidden feelings to each other so we all can be done with this bother!"
Wei Wuxian explains like it's so easy to do and after this, we can go back like nothing happened,
"Hidden feelings, stupid. what are you talking about?"
Jiang Cheng chokes out, which kind of hurts. expecting something different, but it is, Jiang Cheng.
"Oh come on guys, stop ignoring it. You both are always so close and so sweet to each other..."
"Those love sick gazes too eurgh..." What a hypocrite, When he unknowingly does that to the younger Lan brother too.
Your gazes meet, both clouded with worry and embarrassment.
" This is some sick joke, just let us out.."
"No, you sort out your stuff, we're gonna explore the rest of the place now-"
"Wuxian seriously?... That seems like a bad idea, what if there are fierce ghosts around here? Were incomplete!"
"Well they're locked in there, you wanna stay outside where no one can protect you? Just come with me and have some trust" Wei Wuxian says cockily. The sound of walking echoes only but faintly now.
"Okay, Okay wait! Don't leave me please!"
"Plus give them some time, they'll be busy eating each other's faces or doing something even more interesting in there like some papap-"
"Wei Ying!" You both say in unison almost harmonizing, which earns a laugh from the shameless idiots outside.
Jiang Cheng spurs insult to insult in embarrassment
And you just freeze there, muttering some curses to them outside.
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
You sit with your back leaning on the wall, not making eye contact with the equally flustered man in front of you.
Hopes shattered after seeing that there were no plausible exits in this small room, and the stupid door seemed to be blocked and locked on the outside.
You can't burn this house down with a palm torch or do full-powered attacks. Simply because the space in here is ridiculous, it might hurt the other one due to proximity.
Seriously, every movement you do has your shoulders touching it may have been nice when outside, but this predicament has your thoughts tangled now.
"Sorry I don't know what they're playing at, listen they'll get tired of this charade soon and let us out"
"Is it true? do you like me too?" You ask with a glint of hope, retracing back to your conversation with your friends outside.
"I-I don't know what they're saying, I would never?..."
He says almost confused himself, trying to deny it but also not. Unable to make up his mind.
Pride or heart? which will he choose, as he is still going back and forth, one thing is sure to you.
"Ah is that so..? Cause I like you" Having lowered your pride and fear, you say it.
Your gaze falls on his widened eyes. It's like hearing a pin drop, silence envelopes the barely lit room. You could only inhale sharply, this is the ruination of the bond that took years to build.
The strings tugging on your heart, are too hard to bear. Almost pulling it apart slowly but surely. You could only close your eyes in hopelessness
Slow paced walking can only be heard, going towards you.
"I'm sorry A-cheng, I'll stay away from you after this if it bothers you-"
You got cut off by a sudden bone-breaking hug, "Don't say sorry, I like you too." He mutters out softly, vulnerability laced in his words. Like finally letting go of this facade that you raise to never be looked down upon. This burden of a secret getting carried for years finally being able to let go.
"No- not don't say that. Don't say that because you pity me, it's weird"
You try to pull him off you, disbelief clouding your mind.
"it was such a long time ago. I was a coward, I didn't think you would love someone like me...I'm a joke, I'm harsh, I don't know how to express anything-" He blurts out a wave of self-doubt, which you aren't having.
"No don't say any of those, the right question is who wouldn't fall in love with you..."
You lean his head closer into your embrace, finally choosing to embrace the facts. No use in denying it anymore.
"I know you care, somewhere deep in your heart. I understand, forever will."
"You must be crazy," He mutters out shakily, intertwining his fingers in yours.
"I must be. So stop denying my feelings. Or I'll go even crazier" You hold his hands, tightly not wanting to let go at this moment.
You stay in each other's hold for the time being, embracing the tranquility and letting this sink in. Embedding this moment deep within your chests.
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
A few minutes have passed, and you still aren't out. You don't mind though, enjoying some peace.
"Seriously, I can't believe this is the place where we confess to each other" You cover your face trying to stifle your oncoming laughter, finding it too amusing. "Imagined it would be in some romantic place, amidst blooming lotuses, or in the rain all that poetic stuff"
"It would have been thanks to those idiots outside, where even are they? It's getting hot in here" He hisses out, complaining about the heat yet makes no move on detaching himself from you to cool off.
"Oh, it is?" You say with a mischievous tone, implying something as a joke. "Don't mind if I take a few covers off us, so we can cool off- and you know."
A sharp sting from your ear cuts you off, letting out a groan in response.
"You- I didn't mean that, What is wrong with all of you!-"
Jiang Cheng pulls on your ear with an embarrassed expression, not so slickly covering his face with his free hand.
"Oh you didn't mean that whoopsie!- ah okay okay sorry stop"
Clasping your hands on his, you try to pry his grip from your ear. god if Huaisang has some strength released by fear then this guy has some when embarrassed,
He let out a 'hmph' before letting go and sulking away from a distance.
"Ah don't be mad I was joking please?" You try to look as pitiful as ever, crawling into his embrace. Trying to hug him before a scream interrupted your wooing.
"Ah! Help There really are some ghosts here!" A shrill and loud scream can be heard echoing outside the halls
You roll your eyes, not caring if that's real or just an act again
Only leaning into your 'lover's' chest now.
"So this makes us official now right?" You poke Jiang Cheng's cheek. Checking if he's still mad, wanting an answer now.
"If you want to be? yeah." He mumbles out too quickly, breaking his mad facade for a while. Still trying to keep that calm and not affected act.
"You're adorable you know that right?" You point out his not-so-slick act right now,
Pinching his cheeks and admiring the flush in his expression.
"No I'm not your being ridiculous-!" He tries to pry away from your grip, feeling all too bashful as of now.
"Oh yeah fine, coolest most amazing, strongest-" You turn in a different direction, though still teasing.
"If you don't shut up! I'll make you" Jiang Cheng says albeit unsure of his threat, still has conviction in his eyes.
"Hmm, how so? I'm curious" tilting your head to the side, curious.
"I'll kiss you..." A meek whisper, barely able to be caught by your ear
"You'll what?" You exhale shakily, really amused now at his not so intimidating remark
Unsure to even call that a threat, who's he threatening you or himself?
" You all can burn in he- " He gives up, only squirming to get out of your vicinity
" You know you're really in no place to threaten, but I'll just give it to you" You exhale a laugh,
before leaning in quickly, not bothering to warn him. What you said was plenty enough as your lips intertwined in a clumsy kiss.
Running can be heard from outside the halls, with some matching breathless screams. It's Huaisang,
"Guys guys please help there's a ghost! Please don't be mad at me anymore, I'll do anything just help me-"
Loud thuds and scrapes on the floor, like furniture dragging can be heard. You could only smile in your shared kiss not minding the chaos outside one bit.
Jiang Cheng was shocked at your sudden initiation at first, frozen. Yet after some time, he kisses back clumsily, eyes closing in embarrassment,
As the door finally swings open, Huaisang stumbles in quickly. tripping un-ironically before closing the door, leaning his back on it as he takes some time to catch his breath.
His relief turns into disbelief as he rethinks his decision to come in here, seeing your quite intimate moment. Or if it would be better if he stayed outside.
Covering his eyes, he could only plead for it all to be over soon.
"Sorry for interrupting guys... but I'm here.. hi, hello... Can you please help us.." He says mortified by what he barged into.
"Huaisang help! make them come out here hurry!-" Another loud voice can be heard outside. Seems like he's in a bit of a pickle, eh whatever.
"As you can see we're in a bit of trouble-"
"So what?" "get lost," You both say in unison, stopping your entanglement just to be petty.
Huaisang could only whine with his hands clasped, as he flinches at the loud noises of destruction coming from outside. Pitying his friend amidst the trouble he's fighting alone.
"Find somewhere else to hide and maybe I'll reconsider, after a while," You say not wanting to let go soon of this fondness circulating in this tiny room.
"But where?-" He cries out, though accepting his doom with a cry as you continue where you left off.
Bolting out of the door in a panic,
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
Bells echo around the cloud recesses, signaling the time of rest and the end of the day.
Not for both of the black-clad individuals, One with the gold accents dragging a tied-up one.
To be fair getting caught and being a distraction is better than getting mauled by a ghost to death.
Patrolling Lan clan disciples halt them in their tracks near the entrance, a knack of punishment awaits them for breaking a few rules of staying away past curfew.
A light revenge really, concocted by yours truly. A bargain in exchange for saving them against that fierce ghost.
After all, they’re the reason for your blooming bond right now, and your safe passage entering the recesses as the attention of the patrollers is now in the eyes of our geniuses. Rightly so with their brilliant plan.
✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶✶⋆.˚꩜ .ᐟ˙⋆✶
Did I get too carried away when making this? Yes. 3k words, you know it's bad when your notes app gets maxed out.
I was really tired when finishing this, might not be in character, but let's just imagine since this is just my self indulgent fic (all of them are)
Will probs delete the whole thing or just a few scenes after I get some well needed sleep, and fix some mistakes
byebye I will be passing out and hope you enjoyed your reading somehow.

soooo has anyone thought of a mdzs x svsss transmigration au with shen jiu and meng yao?
i’m not going into detail over their similarities but most people get the idea— brothels, yqy/lxc, spite, villainous antagonists that didn’t deserve what they were put through as a child, late start in cultivation, cunning personality, etc etc
Tumblr media
yea.
let me start: shen jiu, one day, is gifted a high quality book set from one of his brothel jiejies when visiting them. at first, shen jiu had no plans to legitimately read them (mostly due to a lack of leisure time), but he eventually got to reading it when he was on a qian cao-mandated break after a qi deviation.
he gets hooked. when SJ is nearing the end of the novel, his thoughts are as followed: JGS deserved to get castrated and his limbs thrown to the endless abyss— WWX, although he was absolutely shameless, he was at least competent— LWJ was a fool for being so in love, but he was moral and loyal— and lan xichen…
an ache forms in shen jiu’s heart whenever he thinks about him. lxc, a man with a gentle, pacifistic, amiable personality who believed in what was right all the way until the end. he wholeheartedly supported and trusted his sworn brother, jin guangyao, until he couldn’t anymore.
shen jiu was touched. lan xichen, that man, had wasted all his efforts on an irredeemable monster. in a similar fashion, yue qingyuan was doing the same.
as for meng yao… shen jiu resented him. he had a loving mother, one who worked so hard for his happiness, only to squander all her efforts. meng yao… had what shen jiu envied the most in the newest disciple he just brought in. luo binghe. imo, it would be a clear sign of shen jiu’s self hatred projected onto meng yao. he sees the two of them as the hopeless scum of society, too broken to be loved. they were “charity cases” that couldn’t be fixed, no matter what.
soon after shen jiu finishes the novel, he falls into a qi deviation (the very same one that shen yuan transmigrated into) and dies. through some time space dimension jumping, shen jiu lands into the body of one 14 yo meng yao. and that’s just the beginning of his story.
shen jiu starts out by practicing cultivation in secret. meng yao’s body, although he is no prodigy, would definitely benefit from practicing from a younger age. then he gets to planning. with how shen jiu is, he would not step a foot in the karp tower, with a system or not. like, just no. i believe he’d set JGS on fire if he ever had to see the guy. the only plot point shen jiu intends on fulfilling is saving lan xichen, and then living a comfortable life away from the jianghu.
but within a year of living with meng shi in the brothel, shen jiu grows attached to her. he *wants* to make her proud, even if he wasn’t her real son. he was a total impostor. but even so, he didn’t want her legacy to be tainted by the actions of jin guangyao— who was now still meng yao, who is now shen jiu. but he doesn’t want to go to the jin sect. after an arduous process of actual communication with someone for a long time, meng shi realizes that the jin sect wouldn’t be good for her son, and jin guangshan wouldn’t help her *or* meng yao. the night before meng shi dies, she tells shen jiu that she loves him, regardless of whether he may fulfill her dreams.
aaaand, after that, shen jiu buries meng shi. he makes enough money as an artist (in secret, with his skillset from qing jing) to give her the proper burial rites. after that, he runs away. shen jiu finds a job as an assistant to an artist who sold fans and paintings in caiyi town. through his job, he meets NHS first, when he’s on his first year of being st the cloud recesses. surprisingly, shen jiu and nie huaisang have a friendship that… isn’t too bad. shen jiu is amiable, shows off the different fans he’s painted, and nie huaisang eagerly buys all of them. nie huaisang also buys out shen jiu’s other works, like his poetry and short stories. that day, with shen jiu’s qiankun pouch full, he treats himself to tanghulu.
the second encounter with nie huaisang brought along jiang cheng and wei wuxian. at that point in time, they were investigating the waterborne abyss problem. shen jiu, a year older now, shows nie huaisang his “new” invention: the war fan. wei wuxian is absolutely delighted at the new invention, and jiang cheng, although less excited that WWX, is considerably impressed as well. as for NHS, well, words can’t describe his happiness. shen jiu, on a whim, gifts it to him for free— mockingly thanking NHS for being such a generous patron. nie huaisang, unable to contain his excitement anymore, jumps on shen jiu and embraces him dramatically. this causes such a commotion, lan wangji comes over. with his brother.
(okay, i’m done writing for today.)

Rule of Law: Deleted Endings
A couple of folks have indicated that they'd be interested in seeing the many, many failed attempts I had at drafting an ending to Rule of Law. 😂 Truly, the ending persecuted me for days. It's like that Edison quote about learning 200 ways not to make a lightbulb. Anyway, if you are interested, read on!
There's a piece of writing advice that, if you can't write anything good to follow a particular line/paragraph, you should delete the line/paragraph. It crossed my mind many times that this advice was maybe correct and I should therefore delete the lines:
“Mn.” Lan Wangji rises to his feet, and Lan Jingyi joins him. “This person would also need a strong sense of justice. A strong work ethic. And a sense of humor.” He studies the young man before him, who was once a small, loud boy with a habit of interrupting Lan Wangji’s lessons to ask impertinent questions. “Lan Jingyi. I am proud of you.”
Because I was having a devil of a time following them. But my gut told me that I absolutely should not do that. That those lines were very, very important to the emotional core of the fic. And now that I have figured out how to end it, I'm so glad I kept them. The fic needs them.
But yeah... what comes next? The problem is that those lines have the feel of an ending to them already--but they're not quite enough to wrap up the fic, to tie a bow on it. I got the idea to have Jingyi say he was proud of Lan Wangji in return quite early, but discarded it since it would be such a violation of the norms of their society. I eventually decided to go with it anyway, but only after approximately a dozen alternatives:
#1:
For a moment, they pause on the porch, looking out over the mass of cultivators who have come for the conference: rogue cultivators in homespun and rich young masters in fine brocade; juniors looking around with awe and elders conversing in somber tones. Across the yard, Luo Qingyang is deep in discussion with Meishan Yu’s head disciple, holding Little Mianmian’s hand. Nie Huaisang is fluttering his fan; Wen Ning is crouched amid a gaggle of children, letting them trace their fingers over the black veins on his neck.
“I can take those for copying,” Lan Jingyi says, holding out his hands for the stack of papers. He smiles again. “I think you have someone to meet.”
“Mn.”
Lan Wangji entrusts the papers to Lan Jingyi and turns his steps toward the back hill.
Wrong - takes the focus off of LJY and LWJ, but the very last line would make it into the final version.
#2:
As they depart the office, Lan Jingyi asks, “What’s going to happen tomorrow?”
“I do not know,” Lan Wangji replies.
Lan Jingyi smiles. “Yeah. I guess that’s the point.”
Who decides?
“Indeed.”
The proposals have been gathered. Their fate is no longer in his hands.
Lan Wangji entrusts the stack of papers to Lan Jingyi, and turns his steps toward the back hill.
He thinks he hears the sound of a flute.
The early parts of this are actually fine, but they're still not an ending, and the transition to the bit about the back hill was brutally abrupt and would not smooth out no matter what I did.
#3:
“Who knows if the rule will even make it into the book.”
“We cannot know,” Lan Wangji agrees. Now, he smiles. “But I will vote for it.”
“Thank you, Hanguang-jun.” He laughs. The sound is slightly watery. “And thank you for—doing all this just based on my wild idea.”
This material is all fine but is not getting us closer to an ending.
#4:
He coughs. “Anyway, let me take those for copying. You have a meeting with a rogue cultivator to get to.”
Lan Wangji raises an eyebrow, but hands over the stack of paper. “I was unaware,” he says.
“As your assistant, I know these things,” Lan Jingyi says, grinning. “He’s on the back hill. With his donkey.”
“Ah.”
The beginning of the phase where I thought I needed to go out on an explicitly Wangxian note. There are going to be a lot of these and they're all wrong, because the ending needs to be about Lan Jingyi. He's the heart. Of the fic, and of the reason I wrote the fic.
#5:
He coughs. “Anyway. Let me take those for copying; you have… somebody to meet, don’t you?”
Lan Wangji does not ask how Lan Jingyi knows: it is the job of a good assistant to know these things. “Mn.” He hands the stack of papers over. It feels heavier than the mere weight of the paper.
Substantially similar to the last one and wrong for the same reason.
#6:
As they walk onto the porch, he says cheerfully, “Even if no one votes for it tomorrow, I’ll always have that.”
“Mn,” Lan Wangji agrees. At the next bend in the path that leads to the Jingshi, a figure is leaning against a lantern stand. Dangling from his hands, Lan Wangji can make out two jars of Emperor’s Smile. “Good night, Lan Jingyi.”
“Good night, Hanguang-jun.”
I really wanted the fic to be canon-compliant, which would mean WWX would meet LWJ in the back hill, but by this point I was desperate and was willing to sacrifice canon-compliance if it could get me an ending that didn't suck. Spoiler alert: it couldn't.
#7:
As they walk onto the porch, papers in hand, Lan Jingyi says, “Let me take those for copying – it looks like you’ve got a meeting.”
Lan Wangji follows his gaze. There, in the bend of the path, is a figure in black – facing away, and holding two dangling jars of Emperor’s Smile.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Wrong, wrong, wrong-ola.
#8:
As they walk onto the porch, Lan Wangji asks, “Are the preparations for tomorrow complete?”
Lan Jingyi smiles. “Almost. Just waiting on one last guest.” Putting on an air of innocence, he offers, “Should I go to the back hill to meet him?”
“No need,” says Lan Wangji, with a small smile of his own. “I know where to find him.”
Cute! But no. WWX shows up exactly the right amount in this fic. Any more is too much.
#9:
In silence, they carry the stack of papers out of Lan Wangji’s office, through the paths of Cloud Recesses—crowded, now, with guests for tomorrow’s conference—to the scribes’ hall.
At the door, the chief scribe greets them with a polite smile and bow. “Hanguang-jun. Lan-shao-gongzi. Is the compilation complete?”
Lan Wangji nods, and hands her the file. Her eyes widen when she takes it from him.
“It’s heavy,” she says.
It is. Lan Wangji had noticed that himself. There is more than paper and ink carried in those pages.
New direction: we're going to actually take the rules for copying, and therefore go out focusing on the rules rather than LJY and LWJ. Not a bad idea thematically! But it just didn't work.
#10:
At the closed door, they pause.
“Hanguang-jun,” Lan Jingyi whispers, “Do you ever wish we just—picked the best rules ourselves and got rid of the rest?”
Who decides?
“No.”
Then, unexpectedly, Lan Jingyi smiles. “Yeah,” he says. “Me neither.”
Together, they knock on the door.
This one would borrow the first few lines of the last one - carrying the papers to the scribes again. This one is, hopefully, redundant. If you get this far in the fic and still don't understand that LWJ shouldn't pick the rules, I've failed.
#11:
As they walk out onto the porch, Lan Jingyi blurts, “Hanguang-jun knows this junior has a history of disregarding proper etiquette and seniority, so this junior hopes Hanguang-jun will forgive him for saying he’s—he’s proud of you, too.”
Lan Wangji pauses, and turns to face his assistant, who blushes.
“Everyone knows you didn’t really want this job,” Lan Jingyi mumbles. “Hanguang-jun worked hard and gave up a lot. So. This junior is proud.”
After having tried what felt like literally everything else, I decided to try having LJY say he was proud of LWJ in return, to see if it would write. It would!! Not like this, though--too clunky--so one more iteration was required.
#12 (final version):
Lan Jingyi blinks hard for a moment, then looks away. “Thank you, Hanguang-jun.”
As they step onto the porch, Lan Jingyi clutches the file of proposals to his chest and blurts out, “This junior is proud of you, too, Hanguang-jun.”
It is, of course, a breach of etiquette and seniority for a junior to speak to Lan Wangji in such a way.
But if Lan Wangji placed a higher value on etiquette and seniority than on sincerity, he would have selected a different assistant.
“Mn,” says Lan Wangji, with a rare smile. Then he turns away and sets out for the path that will lead him to the back hill.
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed!
