Why Fancy Goldfish Shouldn’t be Fed Flakes or Floating Foods

Flake and floating foods are a very common food choice in the market, They both have their benefits and uses equally but that doesn't mean that every fish can eat flake or floating foods. Goldfish; The common and fancy varieties are among those fish that shouldn’t eat flake or floating foods. 

There are a couple of reasons why: 

Goldfish are physostomous fish

A lot of flake foods on the market are made up of a lot of fillers and low quality ingredients, the same goes for some floating foods. 

Flake foods lose their nutrients quickly when dissolving in water

Floating foods help trap air and/or water in the esophagus that travels to the swim bladder, the same thing applies to flake foods.

To show how the body works in goldfish, here is a simple anatomy picture of a fancy goldfish. ( I know this picture was used before, but its a very helpful example and the most detailed I can find of fancy goldfish anatomy) 

According to Wikipedia, this is the definition of a physostomous fish:

“Physostomes are fishes that have a pneumatic duct connecting the gas bladder to the alimentary canal. This allows the gas bladder to be filled or emptied via the mouth. This not only allows the fish to fill their bladder by gulping air, but also to rapidly ascend in the water without the bladder expanding to bursting point.”

Air is only moved via expelling or inhaling from the mouth of goldfish for the purpose of the swim bladder. Floating and flake foods can cause unwanted air and water to enter into the swim bladder, hence the development of swim bladder disorder or other aliments.

Plus fancy goldfish are already bred to have a very compacted body shape, and that body shape squeezes the intestines, swim bladder, and other important organs for bodily functions. Since the body is already in that compacted state, to make it easier to dispute water, air, pressure and waste, it’ll be beneficial for goldfish keepers to feed sinking foods and any other foods ( besides pellets) that doesn't float.

Showing off my gorgeous 3 ryukin fancy goldfish and 1 Oranda fancy goldfish (calcio looking); the setup is almost all natural and I'm very happy with the tank so far! There are 4 red cherry barbs in here as well but they like to hide; Eventually more small schools of fish will be added. Red/Gold Ryukin (ryukins are native to Japan) named Magicarp (': Nick picked him and his name. The larger red/white is Gyarados and the smaller one is Goldeen! 🐠🐟 Lastly, the calico coloration Oranda is named The Furer because of his mustache and it was funny. Made me think of Fullmetal Alchemist and was actually what the keepers nicknamed him. Fixing that uprooted plant as we speak! The little fellas love eating live plants, which is good because it helps keep them healthy and hearty. ☺️ Just means I have to move plants back often and clear the filter tube. Glad I started with a fluval filter as well (': They have a great diet, too! Fishy update! 🐟 Finally got the babies into their own makeshift tank. THIS IS NOT PERMANENT! I don't have much of a plan. It's all play by ear. I am worried that both Jacob and Ladder aren't quite 100% and shouldn't be used for breeding. *Ladder has a mouth deformity, ect. If the babies show any signs of anything similar they'll be euthanized. I've begun to take steps to make sure this doesn't happen again. And before anyone asks, their eyes were missing when I got them. They were both rescues.
