YES, I admit, he's so smart and clever and confident but we all know that. Despite his being Logic, he tries very hard to be gentle and empathetic when it's needed, especially towards Virgil and Patton, and I love that about him. The smartest people are the kindest people.

The sides and their favourite musicians (except it's full of my own biases)

We're in for a long one fanders, strap in

Logan: Bo Burnham. I don't imagine he actually listens to that much music, but when he does, Bo Burnham (and I could honestly see Jack Stauber too), is his absolute go too. Y'all actually have no idea how vindicated I felt when I first looked at his official playlist and saw "art is dead" (also, speaking of the official playlists, I'm not using them as reference, these are all my own head canons.) He loves the wordplay, he loves the references, he loves the instrumentation, he loves the messages, this man is a Bo Burnham fan, and you cannot change my mind. For somewhat similar reasons, I think he'd also enjoy the concept of Will Wood but in practice he finds many of the songs to be a bit 'much', though he likes "In case I make it" and ESPECIALLY Willard!

Virgil: Now, I could go for the very obvious answer and say My Chemical Romance... and that's exactly what I'm going to do. I like to imagine he's like an actual sleeper agent whenever he hears the words 'look alive, sunshine' however he's sort of built up a tolerance (like it's a poison lmao) to the fabled g note. As for other less predictable and less emo artists, I imagine he'd also be into punkier stuff and mainly riot grrrl (mainly because I love riot grrrl) and possibly dabble in some folk punk (because I love folk punk). Specifically, I think he's like Cricket!'s album 'self-sufficient' and the Cat Crash songs 'wdymhdosp' 'Connecticut' and 'dreamer'.

Roman: I thought about doing a deep dive into what I think Roman's favourite musical to listen to would be, but it dawned on me, his favourite artist is Thomas Sanders. As Thomas's ego, it would make sense for him to be proud of his work. As for other thing's I think he'd listen to 'find me in your dreams' and 'deadbeat boulevard' by ace of hearts definitely come to mind as well as a fair few MARINA songs.

Patton: 'divorced dad rock' this, 'kidz bop' that, THIS MAN LOVES HIMSELF A SWEET ACOUSTIC GUITAR LOVE SONG! The album 'hello world' by Naethan Apollo, a bunch of Charlie Bennett songs, 'hi' by Matt Maltese, all come to mind for me. Also, for some reason, a whole bunch of Muppets songs (I have a strong visual of him belting 'am I man or am I a Muppet' to himself, by himself, singing both parts)

Janus: Whatever the hell spotify keeps telling me 'dark cabaret' is. 'Brass goggles' by steam powered giraffe, 'stuff is way' and 'kiss me, son of god' by they might be giants, his own cover of 'into the unknown', 'I/me/myself' (both the original and 2018 live in studio demo) and 'LaPlace's angel' by Will Wood are all staples of his playlist. Similarly to Logan, he likes wordplay and clever lyrics, but he also likes funkier sounds, jazz(?), mixing and mashing different elements from different genres, the unique and oddly genuine nature of music in the first place. He also (may) (he does but refuses to tell Roman) have one or two or ten Disney villain songs in his playlist.

Remus: Lemon demon. Man listened to 'two trucks' once and never looked back. He's also a big fan of musical theatre and while he doesn't listen to it as religiously as Roman does, 'blue' from the original heather's soundtrack has a soft spot in his heart. His playlist has some wildcards though, and it's just total tonal whiplash, one song it's 'alien blues' by Vundabar and the next it's 'Scotty doesn't know' by Lustra.

begging the fanders who are critiquing the janus makeup vid to think critically abt their complaints for a moment

(this is not to say that thomas is un-critique-able, just that the complaints ive been personally seeing are easily explained by general inferences made about the characters' personalities)

firstly: "janus doing the makeup makes it so that his scales arent canonical!" explanation: the beginning of the video, janus says he's in his "thomas disguise." he's doing his makeup in THOMASS BODY, to "LOOK LIKE HIMSELF." it can be assumed that when he snaps into his normal clothes, he's rid himself of the makeup and what we're seeing are his canonical scales.

next: "please take roman and janus's fight seriously! why isnt janus upset??? i want this to be more than a cat fight!" explanation: WHAT about janus makes you think he'd be vulnerable about a fight he had on camera while doing his makeup. please think about that for a moment. from what we know about both janus and roman, their entire dynamic is insensitive vs oversensitive. offensive vs easily offended. AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, doesn't care at all vs cares too much. that last dynamic is what i specifically think will be explored in the finale, but janus - from everything we know about him, and even in the makeup video - refuses to care about things. sure, it's a part of his sassy persona, but not caring about things is a defense mechanism, and one that janus very clearly relies on. mocking roman in a video and then refusing to address it (which would be weird of him to do anyway in a LIGHTHEARTED MAKEUP VIDEO) is very in-line with his personality. very genuinely - could you really look me in the eye and tell me it'd be MORE in character for janus to sort of tear up and look away and be uncomfortable with the idea of roman? absolutely not.

last: "janus was very out of character! he was laughing and stuff!" explanation: you mean in the grey sections? the sections that are very much meant to be interpreted as bloopers? bro

again: this isnt to say thomas is exempt from criticism, and there have been critiques of his videos that i have agreed with in the past. but these couple have especially been bothering me because of how clear their answers were not only in the characters' personalities, but within the video itself!

if anybody has any other criticisms, id be very open to hearing them! but these were my two cents

i personally really enjoyed the video. i thought it was very silly, which im pretty sure was it's intention, and i hope that more people got enjoyment out of it than what i've been seeing. very funny; i enjoy the shorter, more lighthearted videos just as much as i do the more lore-focused ones.

Yes! And I think by analyzing their relationships with each other in that way (how it relates to their function and Thomas) a lot of stuff becomes obvious, like why does Virgil hate Janus so much? Well, Thomas is afraid of both lying and being a bad/selfish person… and Janus encompasses both of those things. So of course Virgil isn’t the biggest fan of Janus, and I personally don’t think they ever actually had a stable relationship.

Yes!!!! I think so too! And I think Patton probably contributed to a lot of the sides’ view on the “dark sides” as well, albeit how he had unknowingly hurt Thomas in that way. Small ramble drop here, but I think the reason why the “dark sides” all have makeup is in a way, a form of dehumanisation. Or rather, villainising them. The reason why the sides took that form is because of c!Thomas’s creativity, right? And the best way to differentiate the “good” and “bad” parts of c!Thomas is to have the “bad” sides have a full face of makeup, just like how Disney villains in classic animated movies are often pretty queer coded and wears heavy makeup. And Roman, being both c!Thomas’s ego and his creativity, would want to incorporate what c!Thomas had learned about good and evil into the “bad” sides’ looks. c!Thomas would need the reassurance of his own ego that he is a good person, and so Roman reflects that.

Patton and Roman’s roles are so intertwined with each other in shaping/reflecting c!Thomas’ view on himself. In a way, both reflects how c!Thomas had been lying to himself about who he really is. At least for c!Thomas’ comfort. The heart and the ego wants to believe that c!Thomas is a good person. But his degrading mental health in the most recent episodes (from 4 years ago) challenges what they thought to be right and wrong. Which is why Janus’ role is so integral to c!Thomas’ growth and peeved the path for c!Thomas’ journey to self-love and acceptance.

I don’t know if the rest of the “dark sides” would ever lose their face of makeup once c!Thomas has accepted them as simply parts of himself instead of “bad” parts of himself that he should repress. But I don’t think they ever will considering Virgil. Y’know. Cause like, the scars are still gonna be there despite everything. And I honestly really like that. (Ok wait makeup as their scars. That’s an awesome idea)

I think a big part of the fandom (especially in the earlier days) often forget that the sides are facets of c!Thomas’s personality instead of multifaceted complex human beings. Which I honestly don’t blame them, cause they’re already really complex characters to begin with the things that they represent within c!Thomas’s psyche. I haven’t been checking in for the fandom for a while now, so I don’t know how the Fanders are doing currently.

Hello! I need your guys help. If you’re a current fander, an ex fander, whatever it be.

I wanna make a video talking all about the hype cycle basically for “can lying be good” especially the speculation before and the fandom after. I have most of the script written but I want a lot of visuals from this era.

I know there’s not a lot of fanders left in the fandom actively who were there for that time/posted about that. BUT IF YOU ARE OR KNOW OF ANY POSTS. Please send links or screenshots my way of anything during that era of the fandom. So any theories about what the episode was gonna be (I remember people thinking it was gonna be about Roman’s room) or after the video and stuff about Janus. Luckily I do remember this time very vividly and that’s why I wanna make this video, I found it so fascinating and a great time in the fandom.

Right now I’m specifically looking for two main things, but of course I want anything I can get. I remember Thomas posting maybe a tweet or Instagram story perhaps of him saying he was filming at a theatre and I remember everyone thinking it meant it was Roman’s room. There was also a post Joan made on their tumblr (which I believe their tumblr has been deleted) about the notes they made about the episode including like oh Patton is wearing the wrong cardigan to show it’s Janus. Stuff like that. If you can find these posts especially PLEASEEEE send me them.

specific things i’ve seen tss fans do that make me hate this fandom:

(disclaimer: a lot of this fandom is great but oh my lord i just have to show some of y’all how your behavior affects others because it’s atrocious)

please read this guys because chances are you or someone you know has done at least one of these things because they’re so rampant in this fandom it’s crazy-

1. sending death threats and calling somebody a “boot licker” and a “d-rider” for defending thomas’ silence about the war. like he shouldn’t be saying anything about the war unless he knows enough to have authority on it??? he’s a privileged white man who lives in a place where the war is not taking place. what productive thing would he be able to say about the war?? leave the man alone, he’s not a politician or a military general. if he did say something, it would probably be misinformation. stop acting like you’re some saint because you’re using bullying tactics to make yourself feel more woke.

2. writing aggressive posts about stuff thomas does that is not an issue. what i mean is that he does deserve to be called out if he fucks up (like the whole thing with underpaying his employees), but i saw a post where someone was using super aggressive language because thomas said he was “being delusional” in a short and someone was on their high horse about how thomas was “being insensitive to people who have mental disorders that involve delusions.” like…please go outside. anyone can have a delusion. and if thomas does make a REAL mistake that actually matters, there are better ways to go about it than spewing hate and name calling. he tries very hard and actively patches up mistakes as well as he can, which is more than what can be said about most cis white male celebrities.

3. blatant racism. i’ve been told by white people that my views on poc headcanons are wrong. like i’m a poc??? i would know more than you??? and i try to be nice about it?? so don’t attack me for saying that there’s nothing wrong with race headcanons as long as they’re done in a respectful way? or that just because roman speaks spanish one time doesn’t automatically make him latino and that’s actually a pretty racist assumption? just trust poc fanders. WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE WE EXPERIENCE RACISM ON A DAILY BASIS. white people will never know what it’s like. so stop acting like it. that’s a huge issue in this fandom.

4. a LOT of aphobia. there’s this concept going around that’s like “oh the sides could be ace because they’re not human so they don’t get romance!” like…babes let’s step back and look that over…cuz ace people aren’t ace because they don’t “understand” sex. that’s infantilizing and dehumanizing. it’s possible to be ace just because you don’t want sex in a conventional way. the sides are not a vessel for your aphobia.

5. SO MUCH RUDENESS WHEN IT COMES TO CHARACTER CRITICISM. the amount of death threats i’ve gotten just because i hate patton??? like PLEASE. i’m allowed to hate a character!! i have trauma and patton reminds me of horrible people in my life who did horrible things to me! he’s like a carbon copy of them in my mind! and even if i didn’t have trauma, it would still be valid because patton is a flawed character! there is nothing bad or wrong about dissecting a character’s unkind actions??? that’s just basic analysis. like i ADORE roman and you don’t see me wishing death upon people who don’t like him??? i just block and move on or i hear them out!! because discussion about the flaws of a character you like isn’t a personal attack!!! people NEED to get that in their heads cuz it’s so frustrating when people take it so personally and actively seek it out just to get mad at it.

As Above, So Below by Kiera Elieson Fantasy AU (Prinxieceit) Rating: G Janus is a lonely naga living in the wilderness. He's only able to admire his winged neighbors from afar until a storm brings them closer together. Notes: Pining and flustered first meetings.

What He Doesn't Say by DragonSaphiraReads Canonverse (Thomceit) Rating: G A very tired Janus decides to take a nap...in Thomas's bed. (He wasn't expecting to nap for long enough to get caught.) Notes: Very sweet and with so much pining. I also recommend its follow-up Those Three Words, in which cuddles ensue.

Comfort and Lies by TypicallyUntypical Gods AU (Gen) Rating: G With no one else to call on, the god of Lies reaches out to the god of Comfort in his time of need. Notes: Gen-ish maybe-Moceit with a lot of evocative imagery and feels.

Stole My Name, My Home, My Life, and... My Heart by KieraElieson 1950s AU (Anxceit) Rating: T After striking an unusual deal, Virgil's life is invaded by a stranger who proceeds to steal his identity, his job, and his home out from under him, but who, surprisingly, doesn't force him to leave. Notes: This is such an interesting scenario for a fic, I can't even. Bake King by Fandombead (MorningMist) Canonverse (Intruality) Rating: T Remus and Patton embark on a magical, late-night baking adventure. (Magical for Patton, a nightmare for everyone else.) Notes: Delightful bit of crackish fun with Remus Doing His Best to make Patton happy, and taking some creative revenge on the others along the way...

Taking Care of You by edupunkn00b Supernatural AU (Moxiety) Rating: M When his friend Virgil is turned into a vampire, Patton just hopes to use his magic to try and help him any way he can... Notes: A very sweet and angsty story with a hopeful ending.

when the rain stops by PanicAtTheEverywhere (elfzhyza) Supernatural AU (Analogical) Rating: G Logan is an ancient vampire living alone in the middle of the woods—so old that he remembers little else—until a mortal turns up wet on his doorstep during a storm. Notes: The soft sadness in Logan and his solitude in this is just beautiful.

Space Brothers by KieraElieson Space AU (Gen) Rating: T Roman and Remus are two kids abducted and for alien experimentation. Luckily for them, their paths cross with a stranger not only able but also willing to help. Notes: Classic space orcs stuff with protective brothers and protective!Janus. Also features a WIP sequel with the rest of the sides, which I'm super excited about.

I Never Cease to Wander by Ended_Flames Fantasy AU (Anxceit) Rating: T Janus is a cursed human, forced to roam to avoid the hostility of those he encounters until he finds himself in the care of an odd shapeshifter. Notes: Hurt/comfort and misunderstandings, very sweet.

Setting Instincts Aside by sleepy_novatea Giant/tiny AU (Gen) Rating: G Emile is a tiny mouse man who, after a stretch of bad luck, finds himself in need of shelter from a storm. Janus is a naga whose cave he happens to stumble upon. Notes: This one is very cute. I love Janus's brief consideration of whether Emile is to be company or a snack. Probably one of my favorites from the event (though it was also written for one of my prompts, so I might be a bit biased...).

Blessings and Curses by TypicallyUntypical Ghost AU (Loceit) Rating: T A soft morning with Janus, his husband Logan, and the ghosts that share their home. Notes: This is one starts sweet and domestic, but the unspoken story hiding below the surface is so deeply tragic and only just gets worse the longer you think about it. (Wounds were suffered reading this one and I'm still bleeding.)

(I was also a participant in this event and I had a lot of fun doing it. I plan to do a diary-style post at some point about the fics I wrote for it, including a bit of meta. In the meantime I don't like to do self-promotion in these rec-lists, but if you're interested in reading them you can find those in the collection as well.)
