From time to time when watching other people play Outer Wilds you come across those who the game just doesn’t gel well with, but you stick around to see the end with them.

It’s definitely difficult, especially when we want to see someone who falls in love with it right away. Or if that person has a tendency to miss or misunderstand the information it tries to teach.

Especially if it’s their very first time playing anything like Outer Wilds…

Basically I just watched Marco Meatball play it. And he has some very mixed feelings about it, given that he often wouldn’t slow down and got impatient. Resulting in him getting very frustrated and angry with the game.

He made it to the end, and I’m glad he stuck through it. I know I was impatient too for the first time I played the game. Perhaps one day he might return to the game after it’s had some time to sink in, because there were moments that he genuinely enjoyed.

And for someone who’s never really played anything like Outer Wilds, he did very well. He absolutely didn’t have to share his playthrough to a wide audience, that’s for sure given some of the people couldn’t hold their own tempers and would spoil different things. But hey, what’s done is done…

My only wish for Marco’s playthrough is that he would’ve taken a moment to breathe; go back to the home planet. Chill with any one of the NPCs or even sent himself out of the solar system. Maybe then he could’ve had more fun with the game and felt less frustration. I know as an impatient person myself, that stopping to take those moments helped me greatly.

Marco’s stream was enjoyable in the sense that we got to see him overcome difficulties. That’s part of the point of Outer Wilds. We’re a first-time astronaut in a ship that’s glued together with hopes and dreams.

And he was basically another Hearthian in another timeline who wasn’t us.

Be kind out there, and from time to time maybe stop to sit down and roast some marshmallows.

I don't like wading into Ao3 debates, but I want to give my professional opinion on Ao3 with regard to archives vs. libraries.

I am a professional librarian (MSLS) and I have worked in both archives and public libraries and a lot of the confusion and concern I see surrounding Ao3 is a fundamental misunderstanding of How Archives Work.

An archive is a collection related to a subject. That subject is often a person but sometimes a field or concept or project. And the purpose of an archive is to keep everything. And I mean everything. I was going to say "short of biohazards" but since I know there's a sealed R. Crumb Devil Gal chocolate bar in the UNC Chapel Hill archives, we really do mean everything.

When a collection of materials--which are usually unique and original and can be photos, manuscripts, letters, recordings (audio and/or visual), notes and notebooks, objects, published books, whatever--on and/or from the subject arrive at the archive, they are examined, preserved for longevity, accessioned and cataloged (added to the archive's records), and added to the archive. You measure collections in linear feet. As in, once it's all preserved and boxed and secure, you note how many feet of shelf space it takes up. And some of y'all on Ao3 have a lot of linear feet to your name (and I'm proud of you).

This is an archive: it is designed to preserve the original materials related to a subject. That is its purpose. Archives are how we have the original scroll manuscript of On the Road, for example, or the Lomax recordings of American folksongs, or Tijuana Bibles, or James Joyce's loveletters to Nora.

Now you, a member of the public, can access some archives. Some are easier to access than others. The one I worked in was open to the public; good luck getting into the British Archives without a good reason.

So now apply this to Ao3--which is an archive both in name and in purpose. It is intended to preserve fan-created content long term. And this means everything, whether you personally like the materials or not. It is a repository for as much as possible.

And the "whether you personally like the materials or not" is important, hence why I mentioned Jim's loveletters and Tijuana Bibles in particular. (RIP Jim, you would have loved pegging.)

If it's made by fans and it exists, we should keep it to document the history and progression of fandom. That is the point. We have lost enough materials related to the subject of fans of media and we don't need to lose any more.

The fact of the matter is that Ao3 is only one facet of the OTW, which preserves other fan-related materials (convention booklets and zines, for example). Somehow Ao3, an archive on the subject of fanfiction, has been divorced from the rest of the project, mostly by way of "purity culture" and panic over "dangerous" fiction.

The fact that you can go through an archive and find interesting information is the other side of archives. No, they shouldn't be like the banker's box of old letters stuffed in my closet. Yes, they should be organized and as accessible as is appropriate for the state of the materials.

It's really, really cool to find stuff in an archive, I'm not even going to lie. I have done it before and I will do it again. And yet there are other items in an archive that I might not want or need or be interested in at all--but they're still there. That's the cataloging and accessioning: to keep up with what's there, to stay "on topic" with collecting, and to be able to find things in that archive. Bless the tag wranglers who are doing the cataloging at Ao3.

The pearl clutching seems to come from 1. the creation of "dangerous" fanworks and 2. public access to those "dangerous" fanworks. These are issues of "purity culture" and opinions on censorship and should not involve Ao3.

Ao3, under the umbrella of the OTW, is a documentation and preservation project first and foremost.

The Love That Vessel Needs Book Project

Hello fellow children of Sleep,

@vesselsscarlet and I had an idea that sparked back from the negative comments about Vessel specifically. And also now after Wembley, we thought about something nice we could do for him and inspired by similar projects, where fans gifted selfmade books to the band, we want to make a little book for Vessel. And we would love for everyone to participate.

We'd love for you to write a little appreciation letter for Vessel or just something you really want to tell him. Fanarts are also appreciated.

We will compile your messages in a little book and hopefully be able to get it to him. So this book will essentially be a big loveletter from the fandom to Vessel.

We just really want to make something nice for him, that will hopefully make him smile and feel loved and appreciated. He's given us so much through his art and we'd like to give him something back.

This post however is just to test the waters to see how many of you would be up for the idea. So we can get a feel of how many would like to participate, so we can plan in more detail and give you more information.

It would be great if you interact with either of our posts and tell us if you'd like to participate.

konata's really easy to grasp as long as you aren't trying to see her as like... ill-natured or dangerously self-destructive

konata's nice, well-liked in the communities she spends time in, and very smart. while she's not exactly responsible with how she spends her time, she's still very smart and sees to her responsibilities

at risk of sounding like a mom lecturing the neighbour's kids, a lot of people project their worst habits onto her because she superficially shares their interests, which is why she and tomoko are interchangeable in fandom portrayals. this isn't really a "weeb" exclusive issue because this also happens with some japanese fans, but konata represents the best of otaku culture (a loveletter to it, arguably) and that makes it easy to project the most virulent aspects of otaku culture onto her

1. Lead Me Down To The Ocean by @glorious-blackout

I feel like this is just the loveliest loveletter to the Scottish nature and to little Maxie. My heart was bursting the whole time, it's such a lovely little story, a tiny insight into what they're like outside of the world we usually see them in. Such a lovely, cozy and warm story! Max is a pure ray of sunshine and this fic just warms my heart!

2. Blame It On The Summertime by @elorianna

A classic I keep coming back to and it just never disappoints. It's perfectly eycte, a perfect depiction of their absolute desperation for each other, the lust and pining, it's so hot and sultry, slow and thorough and so beautiful at the same time. The way they haven't quite put words to everything they're feeling so deeply but showing with their bodies. Also I'm a sucker for "the telling of their story", whether it's taotu or eycte, and this one is just so lovely.

3. i'll see you on the water by @depressedraisin

This was such a lovely little story to read right after the tour ended, such an incredible little trip down memory lane, everything that's happened in this past year so perfectly captured. I absolutely adore the vulnerability and fragility of their friendship in this one, and it showcases perfectly just how important they are to each other. I was hanging on to every last word and really really enjoyed it!

4. you probably couldn't see for the lights (did you stare at me?) by salutdamour / @depressedraisin

This one is so cute, a tiny little gorgeous portrayal of Alex losing his mind over seeing Miles onstage. It feels like we get to have a peek into his psyche, to feel the rollercoaster he goes through and I love the way he just makes up his mind the second his eyes land on Miles. I love when shorter stories are able to convey so much with so little words, so much potential and I really really enjoyed this little story!

5. In The Heat Of The Morning by @musette22 / @subtle-as-an-earthquake

Such a gorgeous little story about everyone's favourite baby puppets. It's so sweet and fluffy suuuuper hot, and everything you'd want it to be! So many little details that jump out, delicious tension and it brings me such gorgeous images. I especially adored the depiction of their friendship, how natural and easy it seemed, and a fresh take on our boys getting together. Read it at 2 am and all I wanted to do was read it again.

A Loveletter to the How to train your Dragon-Trilogy

I love this trilogy so much because it is a safe place for me, this world is a safe place, these characters are a safe place. I am eighteen years old and still doubting myself sometimes. Growing up is not easy and this trilogy shows us that perfectly. It thought us that letting go isn’t a weakness, it’s a strength. It thaught us to do things your own way, to discover yourself and your strengths. It thaught us that true friendship will never end. That true love can exist in our worlds, it doesn’t matter if it’s romantic love or love between friends. Love is Love. Since the first movie we witness how Hiccup finds his own way and comes into his own, to become a Chief, a friend, a soldier, a husband and a father. His whole story touches me so deeply because I see myself in him, this is also why I love the whole trilogy and the shows and short films equally. They tell his story. I believe there is a Hiccup in every one of us. This whole Franchise has just giving me a feeling of pure joy and it feels like Home for me. After seeing all these movies and shows after a so long (and seeing them a hundred times) it was like coming home, that a part of me will always feel joy when I think about httyd. I am dealing with Depression so for me it’s like a little saving grace when I see or hear something httyd releated. It became part of my life again and I am so grateful that it is. It’s for me at least one of the best stories in cinematic history that were ever told. I don’t care if there is now Sipder Verse, for me httyd will always have the status as a superior trilogy, that I love to revisit and think about. It isn’t just a trilogy of movies or a simple TV-Show to a movie, it’s a journey about growing up. I have a lot love for this trilogy because I basically grew up with it alongside the Trilogies Madagascar, Shrek and Kung Fu Panda. I have so much love for this franchise in general, I just really enjoy it for what it is: a magnificent story about a boy and his dragon, who became best friends and will forever friends even if millions of miles parted them. Hiccup and Toothless will always love each other even if they are separated for their own safety, they grow together and they will always remember one another and the beautiful memories they share. There will always be something that connects them. IT’S YOU AND ME, BUD. ALWAYS. This why I love all of The movies and shows (tolerate T9R now to some degree) and it’s sometimes hard for me to see, when people hate on this movies and shows. Especially on the hidden world. I know not everyone likes it but they have to understand it’s hard to see for someone who loves it. I heard from some people that the hate in the fandom kinda destroyed their existence with httyd. I personally don’t want that because httyd appeals to some many and means to so many others so much. It kinda makes me sad to see, because httyd gives me one of the best feelings of enjoyment and inspiration that I never felt before. I know I can’t change some minds, but I just want to say all this, because everyone deserves understanding and respect. I know I posted in the past some hatred stuff against T9R and I regret everything of it, because I can now understand and feel with these people.

Last but not least I hope this franchise will again bring some more people together and the same happiness I feel with it. In some kind of way we share all the same love. We love the httyd franchise. ❤️‍🔥

I just love going on pinterest and randomly stumbling over OC posts from fandoms im browsing in. I love love love love love our universal wish of being in the story and influencing it meaningfully. I can't believe this absolutely loveletter to the story you want to participate in is seen as cringe.

So shoutout to everyone with OC's in any fandom ever. Keep going! Make the parents that are missing in the story or the children you'd like to see, give that character(s) kisses because you think they deserve them, smack that bad guy in the face. Make them overpowered and change the trajectory of canon or make them small and barely interact with the main story.

Just go off, I love every effort and everything you do, and you, for doing it.

As I mentioned in my last post I got to go to England this Summer. The whole impetus for me getting to go on that trip was that two of my friends over there were getting married!

These were two lovely people who met through the Good Omen's fandom, became friends and decided to co-write a GO fic together, and had their relationship grow along with the fic. Well, I had to make it into a book for them as a wedding present!

Since they run The Ineffable Con and even included the 1st The Ineffable Con(where they met!) as the setting for this story of theirs I had to include the black and white wings of the TIC logo in the story. 1 - How many works do you have on AO3?

oh god, 128! but this is an underestimate, because i've anon'd some older fics/fandoms hehehe. i've been 'round ao3 since 2012!

2 - What's your total AO3 word count?

498,649... now this is actually accurate. 300k of that is from 2020 until now. basically the pandemic got me on a writing kick.

3 - What fandoms do you write for?

SO MANY. 19 according to ao3, but right now? baldurs gate & redacted audios >:3 there is another halsin fic in the works...

4 - What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

oh god. okay. you'll get some older fics here: 1. got me on my best (bad) behaviour 2. Call me scent o' mental, but I'm crazy about you (teen wolf....) 3. all bark, no bite 4. devils and ghosts (frank castle / karen page!! love this one heh) 5. sweeter than honey (ofc halsin makes it ahaha)

5 - Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

YES. there are only a few exceptions, when I've written something that touches close to home / a sensitive topic.

6 - What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

hmm...bittersweet endings were my wheelhouse for a long time. OKAY. let's do this one: too little, too late. caroline forbes and klaus mikaelson, set at the end of the originals. yeah.

7 -What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

....nowadays, I mostly write happier endings sadhfjk lets go with: bioluminescence, which follows on from the events of blood moon (@/barbwrites) and takes marco on a roadtrip to see luminescent algae up close and personal. (it's a loveletter to a summer I spent in california during a really difficult period of my life, and this fic means a lot to me <3)

8 - Do you get hate on fics?

I've not gotten hate, but I've definitely had some interesting comments over the years, for a variety of reasons, usually to do with the person's personal views. (one story had the main character smoking pot to calm their anxiety, and someone was not happy with that)

9 - Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

YEP. Smut with feelings is my FAVOURITE thing. I prefer sensual descriptions, because it is all about feelings and sensations with me. as an ace writer, I also like kink and monster fuckery heheheh.

10 - Do you write crossovers?

Not at all ahahahaha. Have I ever written a crossover? I don't think so. I love AUs though, and pacific rim AUs are one of my favourite concepts in fandom.

11 - Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes, and it was teen wolf, and honestly not one of my best. it was a hatchet job, they took random paragraphs and spliced it / wrote around it? someone flagged it to me in a comment, and it was taken down. all in all, a very weird experience.

12 - Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but gosh, that'd be cool! <- stealing from lexi, agreed, would be awesome <3

13 - Have you ever co-written a fic before?

YES. It was FUN. It was a series of conversations between an estranged father and son, Colm and Milo Greer, with the incredibly talented @frenchiefitzhere (also tagging you for this meme!!). it's still one of my favourite things: An Honest Man Like Yourself

14 - What's your all time favorite ship?

ALL TIME FAVOURITE? How dare you. I love all my ships afjkdsfg Shakarian is pretty high up there. Kastle (karen page/ frank castle). All the werewolves from redacted. <3

15 - What's a WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

ahhhh. okay. 'wander. wonder.' my poly longfic. don't hate me, but honestly, I've just not got the space for a longfic at the moment. never say never, but I've caught up with the chapters I had worked up, everything else is a vague outline. <3

16 - What are your writing strengths?

oof. I want to say character. most of the fun for me when writing is getting inside a characters head and figuring out their voice >:3

17 - What are your writing weaknesses?

Structuring longer, multi-chaptered stories - basically figuring out the pacing of it. I'm working on an original project, and I love it, but the first series of major edits will be breaking up my alternating POV sections into proper chapter breaks and letting myself linger more in moments instead of pushing forward (habits of a oneshot writer fdsds)

18 - Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've been meaning to have my estonian friend critique my estonian, but I'm pretty positive the 'bond' I referred to is actually the money kind, and not the emotional attachment I'd been hoping to refer to hfjdkssfdg. I do as much research as I can, but it's best to run it past someone who speaks the language!

20 - Favorite fic you've written?

WHAT A QUESTION. honestly, I love what I have been writing the last three years. I've really let myself just write what I want to read, and it's been great. i'm going to cheat, and say the original project I'm working on that I won't let anyone see heheheh. <3 it's got werewolves, kink and explicit consent, and spun out a whole verse for me to play with (and a fun MMF sidestory that I also need to finish...)
