The experience of being on the backend of an extremely slow-motion fanthology implosion is super interesting, but god I would love to just talk about it openly. The whole situation is completely out of hand and has been for years; I'm still utterly baffled as to why no one directly involved has said anything about it in public thus far.
Preorders closed in early 2022, but for some reason the thing didn't even go to print until late November of this year, and the product that has (finally) arrived doesn't appear to be comparable to the product that was actually sold. Unfortunately, nobody will have any recourse at this point because the purchase was made almost two years ago—it may have been a full two years by the time it arrives, since the team has expressed that they don't intend to start shipping until (I think) February.
Absolutely gobsmacked that nobody has said anything openly. I don't feel like I can because I'm not directly involved, but I have multiple friends who are, and it's an indescribable clusterfuck.

I can pay for the price of the book as well as shipping, and can do this via bank transfer (best option) or Paypal (my funds are being held, for some reason??? So might take some time.).
Please contact me here via Tumblr messenger or replies (preferred)! Or Discord at strawberryvanillagalaxies#9993. Or if there is some other mystical tumblr thing I don’t know about, feel free to contact me there as well so I learn of it XD
I came to the fandom really late and was DEVASTATED to find that there were no physical copies left to buy. I found someone on Reddit saying that they got a copy via posting their question on Tumblr, so here I am!!
Also hi, this is my first post on Tumblr ^w^ I hope I’m doing this right!

I'm so bummed out about the state of fanthologies these past couple years. It seems like the most prolific mods and teams are always the worst; they overpromise, they underdeliver (if they deliver at all), and they blame external forces beyond their control rather than taking even an iota accountability.
This isn't to say there aren't cases where it's out of the mods' hands, but even then it's on them to make it right. It's their responsibility to either finish the fucking project or refund everyone who gave them money. These aren't Kickstarter campaigns where you're funding a dream, an attempt, a prototype—these are preorders. These are a promise to deliver.
I have friends on a fanthology that closed preorders over a year and a half ago and still hasn't gone to print. The mod team blames mods leaving the project (conveniently always the mods that aren't members of their LLC and regardless of when those mods actually left), paper shortages (even though we've been dealing with paper shortages since 2020 and they should know how to handle it by now), and the war in Ukraine (I'm not kidding). They don't blame the fact that they didn't even start the layout until after preorders closed, the fact that the whole team is on multiple projects, or anything that they could've controlled. It's unfair to everyone on that project. It's been "in progress" for almost three years.
In this current situation, with the one finance mod who ghosted all those projects, the blame is placed on p#ypal fees for chargebacks and on random amorphous but unexplained problems, excused with assertions of illness and injury. It's not blamed on a mod continuously biting off more than they can chew for what looks like the past three years. It's not blamed on that mod being unethical in moneyhandling by commingling funds from as many as 40 projects, to the point that they can't voluntarily issue refunds on a project for which none of the physical goods have been ordered without it "seriously impacting" the finances of others.
The other mods on the projects this person has fucked over say it's entirely out of their hands, and then order that no one bother the finance mod about it. It takes some goddamn nerve to say "there's nothing I can do" and then add "but leave the person I'm telling you is completely responsible for stealing your money alone." How the fuck can you demand everyone be nice about shit like this, especially when so many people and so many projects have been impacted?
Throwing the finance mod under the bus to shrug off all responsibility for the situation is one thing, but following it up with an order that everyone be nice and don't complain on the slim chance that the person who disappeared with all the money and everything else will come back and make it right is beyond laughable, it's insulting. It's so out of touch with reality that I can't even fathom how it was even considered, much less included in multiple public statements.
I know some people are laughing about all this because "oh it's just [fandom], they deserve it," and honestly my only response to those people is fuck you. I don't care what fandom it is or who's being taken advantage of, those people deserve better. Everyone deserves better.
I know that fanthologies and zines are supposed to be fun, but as soon as other people are involved, as soon as it's got applications and leadership, you can't behave like it's some casual no-stakes weekend gig.
If you can't take accountability when shit goes south, you shouldn't take on a leadership role on any project—especially not one where other people's money is involved. You have to take ownership. You have to make it right.
I'm just so tired.

i deleted this ages ago on my main art blog because it's not my best work (old art from 2015? 16?), but it felt ironic to bring back the one fatesawakening drawing I did before this game possessed me in the last month. :P

this is a genuine question so i don't want it to read as an accusation more something i'm confused about and the more i look into it the less clear it seems-- would the swarm zine not be considered a magazine? or is a zine a type of magazine but not all magazines are zine, that kinda bit? ty for your time and again hope this isn't rude! ignore if it is!
Hi!! The Swarm Zine is a fanzine, which is a term that does come from the same etymology as “magazine”; a lot of early fanzines looked like magazines. Some looked more like punk zines, and were smaller or more DIY, and some fanzines evolved into “prozines” which are glossier publications run by a dedicated team kf fans. So it’s a range! Physically, SWARM feels more like a book than a magazine, and when we started it we didn’t know how large it would get; if we had we might have referred to it as a “fanbook” or “fanthology”. But to me those things do fall under the ethos of fanzine culture! Hope this answers your question
