What is Coding?

Coding is the practice of adapting key characteristics of a real life demographic group within a fictional setting, such that while the source group is not named explicitly, the adaptation is intentional. This has been heavily used in satire and controlled forms of media to use subtext when explicit labeling was not possible or desired. Coding has also been used in worldbuilding for speculative fiction when the author finds it useful to incorporate references to real life groups in settings where they might not exist.

The difference between effective and ineffective coding comes down to if audiences easily recognize the group being coded. However, effective coding does not necessarily mean good coding. Good coding should resonate with the group that the coding is based on, not just the general audience. There are many historical examples of effective but bad coding. These tend to rely on stereotypes and cultural appropriation to villainize or satirize a group with a bastardized portrayal.

Small Announcement!!

Since coding is kicking my ass and I am probably going to have to start from scratch anyway, I'm gonna try and make the game in Rpgmaker instead!! I'll probably be using an old version and the game will still be free, but if that doesn't go well I'll just pivot back to Godot and start again :/

I'm just having a lot of trouble with the coding and having to flip between different tutorials ( aka needing a tutorial for one thing but the finding out I need a different tutorial for something else or THAT to work)

I did learn a lot about Godot and while I think another game would be fun to make with it in the future, for this specific TYPE of game I'm gonna try something else. It does feel kind of like I'm giving up, but there are literally no tutorials for Turn Based RPGs ( that aren't shit) in Godot 4.3, which is making it hard to piece all the knowledge together ;-;

I will definitely try it again when I have other ideas that aren't Turn based RPGs tho :)

Also, literally all of the inspo for this game ( minus Undertale/Deltarune) was made with RPGMaker. So it will probably be a lot easier to figure out how to actually make it the way I want it to be made :)

TLDR: Switching to making the game with RPGMaker instead of Godot. Will one day make a game with Godot. Game will still be free.

do you have plans to add a critical success/critical failure to the pass/fail mechanic? similar to a nat 20 or a nat 1 in a ttrpg. or would that be too hard to code?

No. And it's a content generation issue, not a coding one!

What would a system like this look like in practice? Right now, the practical outcomes of Wayfarer's dice rolls are as follows:

Skill Succeeded - regular pass

Skill Failed - regular fail

Skill Effective - an automatic pass (when applicable - not all choices have these)

Skill Ineffective - automatic failure (when applicable - not all choices have these)

All four of these lead to unique outcomes that are different from each other.

For every regular dice roll there are two possible outcomes - a pass and a fail. Adding critical successes and fails would increase that to 4 outcomes for a single choice (there's no point in having them if they don't do something and have a tangible difference from a regular pass or fail).

That's an incredible amount of extra writing work, especially when you take other mechanics into account (i.e. ancestry or origin-locked choices, timed choices which have a unique outcome for when you let the timer run out, etc). Some sequences in Episode 2 lead to over 8 potential outcomes from a single passage!
