re: rugby team ghoap
it'd been a one-off, seize-the-moment kind of thing. casual hookups aren't really for you, plus you distinctly remember your ex prating on about how the team would only be here for the weekend hence the absolute burning need to go, and you've got work monday.
goodbye, great knowing them. you'd traipsed out of the hotel room with your sneakers in hand, soap's used jersey in the other- a memento of sorts, a trophy. mild serial killer behavior but you reckon since you just became another pearl in their long string of conquests, the least you could do is take something with you that won't be gone with a warm epsom salt bath and a couple of days rest.
("would ye believe yer the prettiest we've ever brought back with us?" right. you know where you stand on that scale, and people like you don't typically pull men like them. another cringe-worthy comment like that and you'd mistake their interest with pity.)
you'd put both jerseys in the wash later that day, and the rattling of your washing machine marked the end of your exciting weekend.
or so you'd thought. from your side of things, you'd wiped your hands clean of their sweat, spit and come and went home, once again falling back into semi-familiarity, expecting to go to work feeling completely relaxed and loose, in more ways than one, while ignoring the photos taken of you and the "star players" at the stadium on social media.
(no one caught your face, what bloody luck.)
when you see them again, it's by pure chance. you'd been ordering a sandwich at a deli down the street, hand already reaching for your wallet when an arm curls around your shoulders, dark, coarse hair of a forearm brushing against your cheek.
cedarwood and citrus. it clings to your senses— a sharp, tangy reminder of that time you'd only look back on when the familiar pang of want pooled searing hot between your legs. small world, you suppose.
"didnae leave a note. stole my jersey. 'm surprised ye didnae leave us money on the table, bonnie." warmth flared beneath your cheeks but you didn't cow to his crude joke.
"i suppose i could've left a tip. what do you want?"
the playful lines around his eyes smoothed as his lips straightened into a firm line, his eyes frostbitten. you ignore the way his touch makes you feel trapped, tethered, a cage made of velvet.
"took my shirt and then didn't show up to a single game after tha'. jus' gettin' wha' i'm owed. unless he's yer favorite."
how can he be your favorite when you know nothing about the sport they play and have no interest in knowing?
"too bad. we come as a package. get yer food, we've a place nearby."
(simon had been nowhere near as good-natured as johnny had about you leaving without a word. made you spit out apologies with swollen lips, only accepted the ones that came with a fluttering of your raw pussy around the splitting thickness of him while soap condescendingly cooed in your ear about lessons having to be learned the hard way.)

One thing I wish I'd see more of among Ratio fans is some thought about how he views himself as a teacher.
Like yes, of course he refuses to compromise on the quality and rigor of the education he imparts, and he would find it unforgivably unethical to lower his standards in order to pass more students who had not genuinely learned the material. This is core to his character.
However, as someone who is a teacher IRL, I know the absolutely miserable feeling setting that kind of standard can cause. There's the obvious disheartening sense of disappointment ("Are students these days really not capable of doing the work correctly? Is our future in danger, if this is the highest level of understanding our current generation of students can achieve?"), but even worse than that is the self-doubt.
"Is this somehow my fault? Am I not teaching this material in the right ways for the students to learn? Is there something I could have done differently to get through to these students? Would a better teacher have a higher passing rate?"
We know that Ratio does (or at least did) struggle with feeling inferior to the Genius Society, so I think it is also likely, as much as he absolutely will not budge on his academic standards, that he has doubts about his teaching ability as well.
This is the man who wants to educate the entire world to cure the disease of ignorance, and yet only 3% of his actual students are able to get there. How can someone who gets so few of his direct students to a state of enlightenment hope to enlighten the whole universe? If so few students are successfully learning the material of a given class, doesn't that mean the teacher is doing something wrong?Would a better teacher--would a genius, maybe--not be able to impart their knowledge more efficiently and educate even the most challenging of students?
As someone constantly struggling with that balance between keeping academic standards high while also meeting the needs of today's students, I think the passing rates of his courses must affect Dr. Ratio much more deeply than I've seen fans discuss. I think he would question himself harshly over his class success rates, and I think he must be constantly trying to push himself to become the best teacher he possibly can be.
tl;dr: I hope one day the HSR fandom will stop sleeping on the fact that Ratio is an actual practicing professor who probably has astronomical levels of teacher angst. 😂

So... Apparently UA s4 is a massive flop.... I'm not saying we need to start bullying* showrunners and writers and networks/streamers (*putting pressure on them to do right by beloved pieces of media with passionate fan bases so much so that they feel they'll get the guillotine if they do anything less than perfect and justice by the story/characters) but.... We need to start bullying showrunners and writers and networks/streamers again. These mfs have gotten too comfortable

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001) is based on Inuit oral history, and is the first movie filmed in Inuktitut. A period piece set roughly 1000-2000 years ago, everything about this movie is phenomenal - the costumes, props, sets, acting, music, cinematography - even the sex scenes are hot. You can tell the care and passion that went into every detail of the production, from start to finish.
The best thing about this movie is how un-American it feels (or maybe I should say un-Canadian.) There's no hesitation to break the colonialist, puritanical taboos that Hollywood industry control has normalized throughout mainstream cinema. We get plenty of animal violence, we see women processing carcasses to be eaten, there's full frontal male nudity, even tits. There's no catering to a colonial audience whatsoever. I wish there were a thousand movies like this.

Other movies I've actually genuinely fast-forwarded through (seriously, not joking):
Boyhood.
Ken Park.
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.
Maestro.
The Man in the Iron Mask.
Sorry guys, if you liked any of these movies I'm not saying you have bad taste, but you definitely have more patience than I do. I just can't deal with boring pacing and unlikeable characters. I can't.
I'm sure you can't either, but I truly can't.

The fact that you can use Botox for hypertrophic scars and burn wounds is so amusing to me. People would absolutely buy that Bruce Wayne spends insane sums on cosmetic treatments to stay young and good-looking, rather than assuming he needs to get rid of his litany of scars before the Wayne Enterprises corporate retreat.

Sci Fi/Noir/Indie Recs:
Sugar: A private eye must track down the daughter of a wealthy filmmaker, narrated through his wry, noir-obsessed, and truly romantic perspective.
Ohhhhhh myyyy gosh. I loved every moment and it felt like my brain was melting out of my ears. When will Apple make a bad sci fi show? It showed a beautiful balance of noir and modern, it was truly stunning to watch, and it made me bawl at the end. Colin Farrell is a gem and varied between the most darling man and the worst enemy to make.
Fast Color: In a world left in drought, the government pursues a woman whose seizures can cause earthquakes, while she flees from a power far stronger.
Gorgeous movie with excellent themes, it’s very emotional but I always love watching it. It’s one of those movies you can be really annoying about to all your friends who haven’t watched it.
After Yang: After a family’s robot shuts down, the father goes on a journey to repair it and discovers much more than he thought.
It’s an A24 film, so take a guess. It’s a wonderful movie, definitely a little weird and maybe not for everyone, but it’s such a good movie about adoption, family dynamics, and the value of life. I watched it at a very vulnerable time and I have to say, it made life seem much more worthwhile.
Person of Interest: An all-seeing machine can predict a person about to be involved in a violent crime, but is unable to determine if they’re victim or perpetrator. The machine’s creator and a retired CIA operative must attempt to prevent the crimes from happening in advance.
HELLO? The plot alone is just ridiculously clever and it’s soooooo…it’s sooooooo great. It starts out a little slow and there’s some flaws, but the characters and the plots throughout the show were just…true perfection. Peak sci fi crime.
