NAFLD and NASH - Symptoms, Causes, Differences and Treatment
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition characterized by an accumulation of fat in liver cells (hepatocytes). Excess fat in the liver can lead to significant damage over the years. There are two types of NAFLD:
Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL)
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
NAFL (Non-alcoholic fatty liver) - It is a benign condition and in this fat is accumulated in the liver that can cause inflammation of liver but not a progressive damage or complications of the liver. This may result in abdominal discomfort or pain due to an enlarged liver (hepatomegaly).
NASH (Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) – It is a malignant condition and in this fat is accumulated in the liver can cause scarring of liver, liver fibrosis and liver damage further it can cause cirrhosis of liver (also called as end-stage liver disease), further cirrhosis of the liver may lead to liver cancer.
Many people typically develop any type of NAFLD with having no symptoms; most of the time it is diagnosed by a healthcare professional or doctors by doing investigations for abnormal laboratory results or imaging test of the abdomen for unrelated problems.
In order to help people with this condition, doctor identify people those who all are at risk and offers advice on how to manage the condition before significant liver damage occurs. NAFLD is a condition that can be treated and often managed with lifestyle changes.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is not a condition that can be passed on (i.e., it does not spread from person to person). In fact, it occurs most often in people who have one or more of the following risk factors:
Obesity
Diabetes or prediabetes
High cholesterol
Arterial hypertension
Sedentary lifestyle
Use of certain drugs
The medical researchers still do not know the exact reason why NAFLD affects some people with the conditions listed above, but not others.
It is also poorly understood why in some people fat accumulates in the liver without causing significant damage (benign steatosis), while in other people it causes significant damage (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis - NASH).
Since the prevalence of this condition is increasing in INDIA, if you have one or more of the risk factors for the disease, it may be reasonable to discuss with your Hepatologist (Liver Specialist Doctor) whether you need evaluation or not. However, there are no specific-accepted guidelines for who should be further investigated for this condition, other than those with unexplained abnormalities in liver enzymes.

Many people with NAFLD do not have any symptoms, but in those who do, these are usually non-specific such as:
Mild fatigue
Discomfort or pain in upper right abdomen
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis – NASH Symptoms
Over the years, the presence of fat can trigger inflammation of the liver, which can lead to the formation of scar tissue. In an advanced state, the amount of scar tissue in the liver can reach a level called cirrhosis of the liver, which refers to the precise appearance of the scar tissue, liver fibrosis and its degree. In patients with NASH and cirrhosis of the liver can eventually lead to the appearance of signs and symptoms such as:
Increased fatigue
Buildup of fluid in the abdomen (ascites)
Confusion (encephalopathy)
A decreased or loss of appetite
Bleeding easily or bruising (Ecchymosis)
Nausea (an uneasiness of the stomach)
Edema (Swelling in your feet, ankles or feet)
Unexplained weight loss
Yellow discoloration in the skin and eyes (jaundice)
Esophageal varices - enlarged or swollen veins in the esophagus that can cause vomiting of blood, bloody or black tar-like stool
The goal of screening for NAFLD is to ensure adequate surveillance, offer treatment advice and decrease the chances of complications such as cryptogenic cirrhosis, hepatic transaminases, and cryptogenic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC - common type of primary liver cancer).

My lovely friends, this is a friendly evidence-based post pertaining to the risk reduction of a few well-known health effects of 4n4 and mia. Including: Amenorrhea (loss of regular menstrual period), anaemia, digestive upset, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, general well-being, and osteoporosis. It is quite a long post, but please let me know if there’s any other information you would like me to cover. 💕
🪐 Vitamins and Supplements:
• A-Z Multivitamin. Is beneficial for supplementation. For example, Vitamin C is a vitally important vitamin for the body’s connective tissues, including the maintenance of healthy bones and teeth, cellular formation and maturation, resistance to infection, and an increased ability to heal. Additionally, B12 contributes to an adequately functioning nervous system, bone marrow, and intestinal tract. It also acts to increase metabolism of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Finally vitamin B2 when combined with Vitamin A promotes good vision and healthy skin, as well as assists in metabolising proteins and fats at a cellular level.
• Calcium and Vitamin D. Seek a preparation which offers 1000mg of calcium and 10-20mcg (400-800 iu) of vitamin D. Vitamin D increases the bodies efficacy during the absorption, retention, and metabolising of calcium. Calcium of course being vital for bone integrity and imperative for the prevention of osteopenia/osteoporosis.
• Iron. An appropriate iron intake will restore the functionality of red blood cells, allowing the proper oxygen transportation around the body, increase focus, energy, athletic performance, and sleep. Having a sufficient iron store will alleviate some commonly experienced symptoms of low iron including fatigue, dizziness, pallor, and shortness of breath. It may also reduce the sensation of cold hands and feet.
• Potassium and Zinc. A lack of zinc impairs the ability to smell and taste. Connecting this impairment to nose blindness. For example, a lack of a sense of smell and taste may impair one’s own ability to detect their own bad breath, BO, and other unpleasant smells that others may be able to detect.
• Omega 3’s - Fish oil, Krill oil, Hemp oil, or Flaxseed oil. Improper dietary intake, or supplementation of omega 3 fatty acids will result in areas of epidermal (skin) dryness, hyperkeratosis, and hyperpigmentation. As well as the formation large scales expose underlying tissue, which are easily infected. The hair becomes sparse, dry, lusterless, and brittle, with a reddish tinge. Furthermore, nails become brittle and dull, tear production reduces, the tears are also significantly less oily leading to increased evaporation contributing to chronically dry, red, and itchy eyes.
If oil supplements are scary for you to intake due to calorie fears (there is only approx 25 calories in 2 average fish oil capsules). There are dietary sources of omega 3 that are relatively low calorie including chia seeds, edamame, and seaweed. However they provide little amounts in comparison to supplementation or traditional dietary sources such as fish, avocado, oils etc.
However this should also be considered when deciding whether to supplement omega 3’s - they stimulate the secretion of leptin, a hormone that decreases appetite and promotes the burning of fat. Through the enabling of conversion of dietary fats into body cells for burning as fuel.
🍄 Dietary Intake
•Bone broth (or vegetable broth if meat is not apart of your diet ☺️) I cannot stress how great bone broth is! Extremely low calorie, but incredibly nutrient-dense. It also acts to decrease the inflammation within the gut that many of us will experience due to our dietary habits. Including conditions such as constipation, gastroparesis, liver disease, bloating, abdominal pain, and stomach ulceration.
Bone broth also contains large amounts of protein, collagen, iron, vitamins A and K, fatty acids, selenium, zinc, and manganese. Protein being the most satiating macronutrient can decrease hunger and associated discomfort. Collagen and the variety of micronutrients within the bone broth contributes to joint and bone health. Bone broth will also contribute to hydration.
•Nutrient-dense foods including blueberries l are among the best sources of anthocyanins (antioxidants) that promote brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Additionally, red tomatoes and red capsicum (Peppers). Tomatoes are the richest source of lycopene, which is a type of carotenoid found in red fruits that has powerful antioxidant effect that may help protect against heart disease and certain types of cancer.
•Fibre is imperative for smooth gastrointestinal function, including regular bowel movements. Fibre is of course typically found in whole fruits and vegetables, beans/lentils, and whole grains. Low calorie fibre sources include: red kidney beans, carrot, and chickpeas. Psyllium, chia seeds are also good sources of fibre. Fibre supplants such as Metamucil may also aid to increase fibre intake. An adequate intake of fibre may reduce the dependence of laxative for bowel movements. Prolonged use of laxatives may create a dependency on them to even have a bowel movement.
🥥 Adequate Hydration
• The best way to ensure adequate hydration is simply by consuming enough water during the day. However, if plain water consumption is difficult, fluid intake will also suffice. Including fluid such as teas, flavoured/enhanced water, diet soft drinks, juices, etc. The optimal fluids to consume in addition to, or instead of simple water to ensure adequate hydration is mineral water, coconut water, or diet electrolyte replacements (Powerade/Gatorade, Pedialyte, Hydralyte). Correct hydration and electrolyte intake will reduce headaches, constipation, and muscle cramps/weakness.
❤️ Reproductive Health
•Amenorrhea is a common experience for those of us with a uterus. However it is imperative to understand that you are more than likely still ovulating despite the lack of a regular menstrual period. Therefore, contraception must still be used. Amenorrhea may be alleviated through dietary supplementation and small changes to the diet to include more micronutrients, but it may not be completely fixed unless there is an increase to body fat percentages.

I’m so sorry your parents aren’t that educated about ADHD. But not to worry, I found sources you can show them and how it affects your daily life. There will be long excerpts, so I apologize if this is really long.
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic, debilitating disorder which may impact upon many aspects of an individual’s life, including academic difficulties,1 social skills problems,2 and strained parent-child relationships.3 Whereas it was previously thought that children eventually outgrow ADHD, recent studies suggest that 30–60% of affected individuals continue to show significant symptoms of the disorder into adulthood.4 Children with the disorder are at greater risk for longer term negative outcomes, such as lower educational and employment attainment.5 A vital consideration in the effective treatment of ADHD is how the disorder affects the daily lives of children, young people, and their families. Indeed, it is not sufficient to merely consider ADHD symptoms during school hours—a thorough examination of the disorder should take into account the functioning and wellbeing of the entire family.
As children with ADHD get older, the way the disorder impacts upon them and their families changes (fig 1⇓). The core difficulties in executive function seen in ADHD7 result in a different picture in later life, depending upon the demands made on the individual by their environment. This varies with family and school resources, as well as with age, cognitive ability, and insight of the child or young person. An environment that is sensitive to the needs of an individual with ADHD and aware of the implications of the disorder is vital. Optimal medical and behavioural management is aimed at supporting the individual with ADHD and allowing them to achieve their full potential while minimising adverse effects on themselves and society as a whole.

Why So Many Night Owls Have ADHD
Delayed sleep phase syndrome, defined by irregular sleep-wake patterns and thought of as a circadian rhythm disorder, is common in ADHD. The ADHD brain takes longer — about an hour longer on average (remember, that’s just an average) — to fall asleep than does the non-ADHD brain. That’s why it’s not uncommon for us to stay up late at night, and regret it in the morning.
Poor-Quality Sleep Worsens ADHD Symptoms
Suffering a sleep deficit with ADHD is like waking up to ADHD times two — or five. Lack of sleep slows a person’s response time, processing speed, and decision-making. We’re not as alert or as focused when we’re tired. We become crabby and inflexible. We imitate three of the Seven Dwarfs: Dopey, Sleepy, and Grumpy. Lack of sleep is a self-fulfilling prophecy; it only continues to throw our circadian rhythm off kilter and cause more dysregulated sleep.

Why ADHD Brains Chase Dopamine
The dopamine-deficient ADHD brain seeks this chemical in many places, from tobacco to junk food. Caffeine also boosts dopamine levels in the brain. And it’s always tempting to reach for simple carbs, since they rapidly break down into sugar and stimulate dopamine release.
ADHD Symptoms Influence Eating Behaviors
Symptoms like impulsivity and inattention easily invite dysregulated eating, which may lead to unintended weight gain. In fact, studies link ADHD to excess weight and obesity5 — which is linked to other conditions ranging from fatty liver, high blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome. Relatedly, research also links ADHD to Type 2 diabetes.

What Is ADHD?
ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It’s caused by brain differences that affect attention and behavior in set ways. For example, people with ADHD are more easily distracted than people who don’t have it. ADHD can make it harder to focus, listen well, wait, or take your time.
Having ADHD affects a person at school, at home, and with friends.
The signs of ADHD start early in childhood. But some people don’t find out they have it until they are older. It all depends on when ADHD keeps them from doing well, and when they see a doctor about it.
No matter when a person finds out they have ADHD, the right treatment can help them do better in all parts of their life. Having great support from parents, teachers, and friends helps too.
What Are the Signs of ADHD?
People with ADHD might:
