𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙊𝘾 ✸ 𝘓𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘢 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘻𝘰𝘷𝘢
It started with a women and her son. The women was strong willed, care free, and beautiful. She was elegant and wise. She loved her son deeply and wanted him to be independent and brave. She taught him the ways of the Grisha and she told him stories of how they were ostracized and unwanted from the rest of society. From his mother he learned how to be tough and to stick up for himself. He became very protective of his mother and wanted nothing more for her to be safe and happy. The women one day decided she wanted more for her son. Seeing as a child would want more than just his mother for company, she went into town and sought out a strong Grisha whom she would take to bed. When the girl was born, the boy knew that he would do anything to keep her safe and happy just like his mother. As she got older she began to show her powers as a Tidemaker differing from her mother and brother. Even though their powers differed, they taught her everything they knew.
As the boy grew more powerful and gained more control, the girl stayed by his side. He never made a decision without consulting her first and together their grew the second army. Unlike the boy, the girl quickly fit in with all of the other Grisha her age. She ate with them and went to classes with them, even though she was way beyond their knowledge in summoning. She was an extremely social being. As she grew up she became a bigger part in the court. She would often accompany her brother to the Grand Palace and she became an excellent diplomat. She was poised and elegant like her mother and resembled a queen. She was beautiful and quickly caught the eye of many of the boys at the many balls and dinners she would attend at both palaces.
She noticed her brother hovering and did not mind in the slightest for she did not have her eye on any of the boys except for one?
She had met with the royal family many times and quickly became close with the youngest prince because of his witty banter and his playful nature. Them being very close in age, they have hung out together since he was thirteen and her and her brother moved into the little palace. Other than her brother he was the girl’s closest friend. They often snuck out at night to run through the grounds and play by the lake away from the palace. They confided in each other about their troubles— mainly ranting about their annoying older brothers— and laughed together throughout their growing years. They shared both of their first kisses together and, knowing of her brothers distaste for the girl having a relationship, snuck around the two palaces stealing kisses in empty palace rooms and at their spot along the lake after it was dark. Her brother remained protective of her, and he remained oblivious of their relationship as she promised him she had no interest in anyone. He knew that she was old enough to make her own smart decisions but he was terrified of someone hurting her so he kept her to himself. And hurt was exactly what happened to her

Summary: Elias lost her once in 1992. In 2025, her eyes find him again—through someone new. But some love stories never die… they just wait.
000:
Mississippi Delta– 1932
Elias laid there in a back room of the juke, shirt torn, blood soaking the front. His hands trembled—not from pain, but from the weight of what she’d just done.
He’d broken free from the hold his twin, Elijah, had him in before reuniting with Mary and the others. He just needed his brother and his wife, Annie, and their little cousin, Sammie. He needed them to feel the joy and excitement.
But then it all fell apart. The Juke Joint had turned into a massacre. Blood, death and destruction all from a powerful hem.
“I gave you life,” Mary whispered behind him, her voice soft as poison. “You were a selfish man.”
“I didn’t ask you to,” he said, jaw clenched.
“But you let me.” Her heels tapped once against the pinewood floor. “On that floor. In that back room.” She smirked. “You came for me, Stack.” The flirtatiousness in her voice wrapped around his body.
He turned around. Her face was beautiful but cold. Pale curls down to her collarbone. Her eyes gleamed in the poor lighting.
“That don’t mean I wanted this.” He was coming to his senses. Smoke was gone.
She smiled bitterly. “But now you’ll never leave me. Not again.”
Elias took a step back. “Mary…”
“You think I didn’t feel it?” Her voice cracked—just once. “You think I didn’t see the way you looked at all of them? All those colored girls in the Juke?”
“That wasn’t—”
“They wasn’t me!” Mary screamed like thunder rattling through.
“I’ve given you everything,” she said, stepping closer, eyes glowing now, inhuman and hungry. “Power. Life. Eternity.”
“I don’t want eternity, Mary. Not if it means being yours.”
Her face twisted. “Then you’ll have it alone.”
She raised her hand. Blood dripped from her wrist, and she spoke in the old tongue, the one her mother taught her before she died under a pale sky.
Elias fell to his knees, choking, as the room grew darker—colder.
“From this night forward,” Mary intoned, “you will walk this earth never knowing peace. You will remember every face you love, and every one you lose.”
Blood spilled down his chin. His gums ached. His heart beat once—then slowed.
“I curse you, Stack. You will hunger, but never be filled. You will love, but never be loved back. And every woman you desire will feel my shadow on her soul.”
The final word hit the air like a storm breaking. The candlelight blew out, one by one.
Mary knelt beside him, cupping his face.
“I made you, Stack,” she whispered. “And I’ll unmake anyone who tries to take you from me.”
She kissed him, slow and coldly, and when she pulled back, her lips were red with his blood.
He screamed into the darkness as the curse settled in his bones—burning, binding, eternal.
From then own, Elias vowed to be alone. He hated Mary. She bound him to her. She was selfish, envious and entitled. Qualities he never saw from her growing up until that night.

Volleyball (NES)
Developed/Published by: Pax Softnica, Nintendo R&D4 / Nintendo Released: 21/07/1986 Completed: n/a Completion: Played it as long as I could stand.
Nintendo’s sport output for the Famicom and NES, by 1986, has been bad. There’s absolutely no way of getting around that, and Volleyball, frankly, doesn’t change that at all. Coming three years into the system’s life, at first glance this is so bare bones–and volleyball such a niche sport (sorry, huge volleyball fans!)–that you would almost assume this was made earlier (say, around the time of Soccer) and considered simply too weak to be put out as a cartridge, so dumped out for Famicom Disk System just to bulk up the numbers years later. After all, it could be sold more cheaply, so consumers might not feel totally ripped off (especially if they just chose to re-write the disk after 20 minutes…)
Except… that’s not actually the true story, and if you dig a little deeper, and spend a little more time with Volleyball, you might discover it’s been a bit misunderstood... even if it is, honestly, still rubbish. But let’s take it in context.
According to Kyoto Report (where, sadly, they don’t link their sources, so keep that mind) this was pitched to Nintendo by Pax Softnica based on their earlier MSX title “Attack 4 Women Volleyball” after being turned down by SEGA, and Nintendo R&D4 produced and created the graphics and sound (which is certainly why it’s so visually similar to Soccer.) This actually led to a long (and ultimately quite fruitful!) relationship with Pax Softnica, and the why of that absolutely won't be immediately apparent based on the way you’ll almost certainly experience a game like this (booting it up on Switch Online, not reading any instructions, etc.) because like Nintendo’s other sports titles, Volleyball is structurally basic in the extreme. You can play male or female volleyball teams (which seems to just change the speed) in training or a simple exhibition match that asks you to win three sets of first to 15–which takes forever. Oddly, the game doesn’t even give you an option of which country you want to play, sticking you with USA (or Japan, obviously, if the FDS version) and has a slightly odd selection of opposing teams including Cuba and Tunisia.
(I actually looked up the 1986 Men and Women’s Volleyball World Championships–which, possibly, this was timed for–and the teams in this game aren’t, notably, the standout teams of the tournaments.)
The play is initially rather strange too. Rather than go for a football game like “you switch to the player closest to the ball” they took a sneaky shortcut by instead going for a sort of table football-esque system where you control a “row” of players closest to the ball. This means that if you’re moving the players at the front, you are moving three players in a synchronised fashion, though it’s extremely confusing.
This is sneaky because it allows Pax Softnica to avoid coding any teammate AI at all! All your teammates just stand still while you’re moving around, and as in volleyball you can’t use a single player to juggle a ball more than once, this requires you be extremely aware of what you’re doing.
The other thing that you might miss, or misunderstand, is just how rallies and spiking the ball works. When you start to play it’s easy to assume the only button you use is A, but Nintendo’s Famicom 40th Anniversary website for the game explicitly points out there’s a fair amount of strategy and input you can have, with the B button and pushing directions allowing you all sorts of effect on where the ball goes.
So in a weird way, Volleyball is actually a lot more sophisticated than it seems–even if it uses a confusing, hacky way to control your team. You could almost imagine this being one of those sports games that because it’s so simple it ends up timeless and amazing.
This is not true. While Volleyball uses a shadow to make sure you know where the ball is going, the viewpoint, imprecise movement and the extremely tight collision detection make this an absolute chore to play. I’ll be honest, though I booted this up several times, I got bored by the time I got to about… 6 points against Tunisia, even if I was eventually pulling off sweet spikes and everything. It’s completely possible this is fun if you play it against another player and you both get really into the minutia of how to play it, so I just can’t discount this completely, but it certainly doesn’t feel worth the effort.
Will I ever play it again? Heck no. Final Thought: As there is something here that makes it a cut above total shovelware, I can see why Nintendo might feel pleased enough with Pax Softnica to keep working with them. And although there’s almost no information on this game in the west at all, this seems to have an alright reputation in Japan, coming 9th in the list of sports games voted for by Japanese players in the 40th Anniversary celebrations. Though Tennis and Baseball come in at 3rd and 4th, and the phrasing of the question to me reads as “if you say sports game… [what’s game you think of]” so that actually might not mean anything at all.
What really probably tipped the scales is that, supposedly, Volleyball sold 2,150,000 copies. This seems bananas to me, because the Famicom Disk System only sold around twice that. I guess it’s possible, but it therefore ranks as the 25th top selling game on the NES/Famicom of all, which… you’d assume people would be building chairs out of their collection of Volleyball disks like people did with Moero! Pro Yakyuu carts (somehow I can’t find any record of this on the internet, but they definitely did–that link to a game store full of copies will have to do.) This might be a quirk of the Famicom Disk System though–people may have been buying this cheaply from Disk Writer kiosks and… I don’t know, forgetting they had it and buying it four times. It would explain why I don’t remember shops with hundreds of copies, anyway.
Every Game I’ve Finished 14>24 will be released in print on October 21st, 2024! You can pre-order it on kindle, or epub/pdf now. You can also support Every Game I’ve Finished on ko-fi! You can pick up digital copies of exp., a zine featuring all-exclusive writing at my shop, or join as a supporter at just $1 a month and get articles like this a week early.

Introducing - ‘Lucie Lantsov’
“You’ll ache. And you’re going to love it. It will crush you. And you’re still going to love all of it.”
The caged bird of Os Alta, they called her. Lovely and delicate, kept in her gilded cage and appeased with books and dresses and all manner of pretty things. There were rumors, of course, stories shared among the inhabitants of Ravka regarding the king’s niece and why she never left, why she was kept so carefully shut away, even when the royal and family left Os Alta in the same in favor of their lake palace.
The truth is, Lucie Lantsov is one of Ravka’s most well-kept secret. Favored by her uncle, the King, for a power that is mysterious to all of those around her. Lucie is a Grisha, but a Grisha unlike any other. They have no class of Grisha for what she is and no other Grisha to compare her powers too. Some call her a caged bird, but there is another name for her as well.
The Prophet.
Lucie possesses the ability to foretell the future. A fun parlor trick, to be sure, but it runs deeper than that. Within her, she possesses the ability to see the turns of major battles, the disastrous ends of potential alliances, the tragedy of love stories gone wrong. Because, though she can see what might happen, the future is not set in stone, and the knowledge of what might happen gives her the ability to change it. It’s a useful ability, one that her Uncle values over nearly every other Grisha ability. But, it doesn’t improve Lucie’s ability to fight, she can’t beat down an enemy with it. And why would he want her to when she can be kept in Os Alta, the most well-protected city in Ravka. There, Lucie will be safe.
Summers are spent wandering the empty halls of the palace alone, not welcomed among the other Grisha or in the Little Palace because of who she is, the little bird with a foot in each world, born with a silver spoon in her mouth and every advantage placed in her hands. But it is here, in these empty halls, alone and desperate for companionship, that she first caught the interest of the Darkling. The rest, as they say, is history.
“Doesn’t it sound lovely beyond belief?”

Don't apologise! I love learning about new OCs! 🥰
Oh, I imagine Kseniya is going to be soooooo conflicted! Tough road ahead.
And I do like that bit about Inessa's survival instincts!
😲 my first thought when I began reading about Iyana was "She's like Jesper". Love the guy. And she sounds so interesting!
And Czarina! Veeery intriguing. She's like a female Darkling! Real badass villain. 😎
Thank you so much for sharing! 😊
OK, I've recently fallen into the Grishaverse (been years since I read a book in just two days), SO . . . tell me all about your main SaB OCs! :-D
yesss!! i need to get my butt back into the books myself!!
i’m honored you wanna know about them 🥰🥰 be warned i made too many lmao and i might’ve rambled a bit srry!!
my main focus is kseniya kozar, darkling li, my heartrender bby, her entire story is basically her having her loyalties split between her love for the darkling and well, common sense. i guess you could say she’s a spy but not really?? idk it’s complicated. her personality… she’s always very focused on furthering herself which is her best and worst trait because she sometimes pushes herself too far, very chill person, good at finding how people work
next is inessa volkova, an escaped presumed stolen grisha who gets pulled back into things at the little palace when she bumps into mal, pairing alina and mal! i put her through a lot, with the whole constant hiding and running away alone for years, never trusting anyone, having identity issues and being very empathetic but having ridiculous survival instincts in the middle of a war
next is my crows!! i technically have two but iyana drozdova is the one i gave the main POV so i’ll be focusing on her!! she’s a grisha too but doesn’t use her gifts too often so she isn’t as powerful as my other ocs but she knows how to work a dagger so like she’s still pretty badass imo. she’s friends with jesper which is how she gets involved w the crows, and her story is just so angsty, she had such a horrible childhood she repressed memories of it and the ones she does remember is … not good. she’s basically a thief and occasionally an assassin for hire.
OK LAST ONE ((technically i have three more but they aren’t mains and i don’t wanna keep you here forever))
this one is my first villain oc czarina, paired with the darkling. her main goals are to rule ravka even if it’s in the shadows, and to make the darkling life harder 💖 she got into the king and queen’s good graces enough to be assigned to protect the queen. when alina comes into the picture she helps turn alina against the darkling because she loves chaos, thinks it’s funny, and thinks they’ll destroy each other or at least one of them will take care of the other enough for her to deal with whoever is left standing. she genuinely wants to make ravka a better place so no grisha child goes through what she did — her whole family were killed off one by one as a kid by and she saw her parents brutally murdered — but she like the darkling she goes about in a way that’s … questionable. she’s very evil and manipulative i love her sm.
tysm for the ask sorry for the ramble !!!

I really liked Shadow and Bone! Didn't like the fridge-a-woman-for-manpain tired trope and the antler collarbone thing makes me ill, but overall it was really captivating and I love the characters. I'm looking forward to future seasons!
