listening
one of my favorite bands, Joywave, dropped a new album last week! it is not my favorite album of theirs but so it goes. perhaps it needs more time to grow on me. Sleepytime Fantasy kicks off my favorite section of the album. video game enchanted ice cave dream sequence music.
youtube
i must stay true to my own rules for this series (not a rec series, genuinely what i've been into the most this week) and the song that's been on loop all week is a genshin impact character's theme music (punchy wolf-coded ice cop who is the duke of the prison he. runs? administers? don't worry about it). unfortunately a bop. the character music lately has been a lot more modern and experimental than i expected? this one has a police siren drop

i really, really enjoyed Trouble And Her Friends by Melissa Scott (LAMBDA award winner 1995)! @delta-orionis and i frequently ask ourselves "what if neuromancer was good?" and this scratches that itch for me. it is often difficult for me to take neuromancer's protagonist henry seriously, but this book features a pair of extremely practical dykes. it opens on the passing of a new american law criminalizing big swathes of online activity, passed despite a presidential veto. description from amazon
Less than a hundred years from now, the forces of law and order crack down on the world of the computer nets. The hip, noir adventurers who get by on wit, bravado, and drugs, and haunt the virtual worlds of the Shadows of cyberspace, are up against the encroachments of civilization. It's time to adapt or die. India Carless, alias Trouble, got out ahead of the feds and settled down to run a small network for an artist's co-op. Now someone has taken her name and begun to use it for criminal hacking. So Trouble returns. Once the fastest gun on the electronic frontier, she had tried to retire-but has been called out for one last fight. And it's a killer.
this startled me by how fun and competent it is! i tried reading one of the author's books last year (Dreamships) and had a miserable time with the pacing and flow of information. there are echoes of the pacing issues i had with the last book-- this is a nearly four hundred page hardcover, we have a lot of Next Locations to go to, and we are going to take our fucking time getting there. a road trip book, rather than a destination book. Scott has gotten way way better at fleshing out those locations— an artists' co-op has their skylights set to amber to hide the wear and tear on everything in their central hangout space when the feds show up. i also connected with the inciting incident way more-- someone stealing a female hacker’s name and style is instantly relatable. i am riding shotgun with Trouble. i am ready to throw down with her.
it's a very physical book in many ways, bc it has three brief sex scenes, is very concerned with sensuality in both senses of the word, and overall it's like the background in an anime that’s full of dials and buttons and little blinky lights. written in 1994, fascjnating how much concepts of VR and sensory inputs have not changed, but everyone still has the equivalent of an enormous old school desktop and giant CRT monitors set up. everyone is constantly lugging around so much physical tech. the stuff that makes you better at hacking in the net is quick reactions to VR sensations, the only way to get that cutting edge sensation is to get a physical chip or “worm” in your head, and the only people who do that are the core outcasts and freaks of the internet (the gays, the women, the people of color, the all three, presumably the furries as well). from that day to this…
there's an interesting contrast between Trouble and her old partner Cerise stalking the virtual reality bazaars/being queens of the BBS undergrounds, and the danger they feel and face when moving about in the real world. some reviewers are very cranky about how negotiations on and offline feel the same but i did not feel this particular quibble. communication is communication. it is known both on and offline that they're 1) women and 2) lesbians. they're in less physical danger online but slurs can still happen no matter where they are. also, i am well used to the necessity of having to posture and peacock and be kind of a bitch to establish myself in order to get anything done in coding/hardware scenes, which is something i don't think any of the male reviewers of the day ever had to think about.
some cowboy shit goes down at the end that had me hooting and hollering, and Scott handled the hacking scenes in an interesting way-- a sort of abstracted duel? terrific "fight" scenes. very interesting at how she will move things around in order to treat scenes in ways she's good at-- like establishing very grounded locations that feel real, physical sensations, and fight scenes-- instead of just kind of slogging through a very surface level high-overview travelogue like in her last book. ive been stuck on a fic chapter for like four years and this is making me think about doing it the fun way instead of the way i thought it should be done. this may be obvious but i am an amateur and more importantly an idiot.
this was a $6/1 book special last year at one of my favorite thrift stores, a religious shop with the absolute worst vibes in the greater houston area but some of the best stuff

watching
Five Dolls For An August Moon (1970, dir. Brava). sometimes you see a cool title on kanopy and you don't have a better way to kill an hour and a half. plus it had some guys i know from cowboys. tw for a suicide's body in the first fucking ten seconds of the trailer, which is a weird trailer choice bc u don't actually see most of the murders in the movie.
ive watched a fuck of a lot of spaghetti westerns so i feel i am somewhat qualified to tell you this is one of the worst dubs ive ever seen. the lines actors are quarter-heartedly delivering do not always make a lot of sense and only occasionally match the subtitles. i am assuming this is the original dub, bc kino lorber generally does a pretty okay job restoring things?
youtube
this is not a good movie (extremely troubled production, director swap three days before filming, made on a shoestring budget, the actors mostly wore their own clothes, etc). it is not very good at maintaining tension, because it is a film that first and foremost Looks. beautiful fucking sets, beautifully decorated. the exterior is a matte painting, a sort of frothy dream-bubble of sixties architecture. most of the interiors are apparently a real house. incredible experimental burbling soundtrack full of Weird Sounds.

sorry about the tubi interface and our old friend the activate windows logo.
there are so many fun directorial flourishes and staging, but it does get a little wrapped up in itself. this made me think of The Secret of NIMH, a beautifully animated talking-animal film that gave me nightmares as a child, where the animation tricks and sparkles and moving parts sort of all get in each other's way to produce something less than the sum of its parts. this sort of happens here. i'm going to yoink this from a review:
Bava’s eye for exquisite compositions is equally evident. One scene in particular stands out in this regard: The filmmaker shoots an otherwise humdrum fistfight through wooden latticework that breaks the action up into an abstracted mosaic effect. The fight culminates with a table being upended, which in turn unleashes a myriad crystal spheres. The camera follows along as the spheres tumble and cascade down a spiral staircase and roll across a tiled floor before plopping like so many bath bubbles into a tub. The scene concludes with the revelation of a recently deceased character caught in what you’d have to call a tableau morte. It’s a dazzlingly orchestrated sequence, easily on par with more famous Bava set pieces.
it's gorgeous! there's also So Much going on. another lovely bit of business: as each person dies they get wrapped in plastic sheeting and put in the walkin freezer. next to slabs of beef. not a subtle film, and i don't mean it as a diss, bc where's the fuckin fun in that?

playing
i have not been doing much of anything here except listen to podcasts and work toward the two-thousand-fish-caught achievement in genshin. impatiently waiting for Clorinde to be released in several weeks. that one button needs a raise. it is So funny to see genshin characters with fucking guns. very sword and pike based societies so far

kliff & luthier supports
written for @fe-aspec-week 2024! when i played echoes i wished these two had supports because echoes needed more supports and i think they could have an interesting dynamic... so i did it myself!
C Support
Kliff: Hey. Luthier, right? Luthier: What do you want? Kliff: Wow, and people say I’m standoffish. Luthier: Everyone in this army who wanted to make a new friend approached me within a week of my arrival. It’s only reasonable to assume that you want something from me. Er, not that I’m unwilling to oblige. Kliff: Fine. We can drop the pretenses, then. I want to learn more about magic. Luthier: I see! Well, you’ve come to the right person. I may not have my sister’s raw ability, but I’ve exhaustively studied every tome available to me. I’m confident I can answer any questions you have about magical theory. Kliff: It’s not theory I’m after. We’re in the middle of a war, remember? I need to learn new spells. Spells that kill people. Luthier: So impatient. You’re just like my sister—blessed with so much magical aptitude, and unwilling to turn a single page to use it. Kliff: Don’t compare me to your kid sister. And—aptitude? What’s that supposed to mean? Luthier: Magical talent. Latent skill. Arcane ability. It’s passed down family lines. One or both of your parents was born with the gift, and one day, your children likely will be as well. Kliff: You know what? I don’t think I need magic lessons from you. Luthier: …Did I say something?
B Support
Luthier: Kliff! Still working on your studies? Kliff: What’s it to you? Luthier: …I was trying to start a conversation. Kliff: And I’m trying to end it. Go away. Luthier: Would you just hear me out? Kliff: … Luthier: I can see how the idea of magical inheritance might be… offputting to those who aren’t familiar with it. I’m certainly not pleased about being limited by something that was decided before I was born— Kliff: Sounds like a you problem. Luthier: However, it’s a fact of life. If you can’t come to terms with something as basic as this, you’ll never be able to advance your magical studies. Kliff: Fine, then. It’s a family thing. So what? If anyone else in my family has magic, they don’t know about it. Luthier: Pehaps you should inform them, then! Magical study could make for an excellent family bonding activity… provided they’re more agreeable than my ungrateful sister. Kliff: Heh. And if they’re not? Luthier: Then consider it something you can proudly pass on to your descendants. Kliff: Wrong again, Luthier. Luthier: What? What did I say this time? Wait—Come back!
A Support
Luthier: Kliff. Kliff: What do you want? Luthier: I want to know what I keep doing wrong. Am I doing something to drive you away? Kliff: It’s none of your business. Luthier: Will you please just enlighten me? Despite what others may believe, I am trying to be friendly. Kliff: …Everyone always talks about settling down and starting a family—like it’s a death sentence or something. Nobody cares what happens if you don’t want to. Luthier: And you… don’t? Kliff: No way. Now that I’m out of Ram Village, I’m going to keep traveling until I die. There’s no one in the world I’d give that up for. Luthier: … Kliff: What? What’s that look for? Luthier: I… I was always expected to have children one day, so that I might continue my family’s bloodline. I never thought I had a choice about it. Kliff: Sounds like a— Luthier: Yes, a ‘me’ problem, I’m aware. What I’m saying is, you’ve given me new perspective. I’ve left my hometown too, and… well, they’ll always have Delthea around town… I think I might be inclined to travel as well. Kliff: Huh. Luthier: Perhaps… we could even travel together? Kliff: Don’t get ahead of yourself. Luthier: Ah. Kliff: But… if we are both going to be traveling after this, I wouldn’t mind meeting up from time to time. We could swap notes. I could learn a few new spells. Luthier: Excellent—it’s a plan, then! I’ll see you out there!

Hi cherry, It's great to find another scooby doo writer fella here!
If it's not much trouble could I get shaggy rogers and scooby doo (platonic and from the Mistery Inc series, the one from 2007 I think) with a fem teen reader, like in her 12-13-14, that is part of the gang but is highly afraid of the dark?
Maybe the gang has to go through a dark tunnel and the reader is very scared so she turns to Shaggy and Scoob for comfort.
All fine if not though! Have a nice day! <3
YES YES YES!! i love mystery inc so much! thank you for the request <33

as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting an eerie glow over the sprawling landscape, the mystery machine trundled down the winding road that led to hollow creek. the dense forest surrounding the town seemed to whisper secrets, its ancient trees stretching out like gnarled fingers, beckoning the curious souls forward. the air crackled with anticipation, carrying a sense of mystique and foreboding that wrapped around the gang like a second skin.
hollow creek, with its cobblestone streets and quaint cottages, appeared frozen in time. but beneath its picturesque facade, a veil of uncertainty hung heavy, shrouding the inhabitants in an enigmatic haze. the locals whispered tales of inexplicable phenomena that plagued their once peaceful haven: ghostly apparitions, vanishing objects, and unexplained noises echoing through the night. It was a place where the ordinary intertwined with the extraordinary, creating an aesthetic of eerie beauty.
as the gang stepped out of the mystery machine, your presence seemed to awaken the town from its slumber. the lamplights flickered to life, casting long shadows on the cobblestones, and the wind whispered secrets in your ears.
as night settled upon hollow creek, the town transformed into a dreamscape of ethereal beauty. softly glowing lanterns adorned the streets, their warm light casting gentle shadows upon the cobblestones. the moon, full and luminous, emerged from behind the wispy clouds, bathing the scene in an otherworldly glow. the air was laced with the scent of damp earth and the distant rustling of leaves, heightening the senses and sending tingles down spines.
the library was a sanctuary of knowledge and antiquity, its shelves lined with weathered books, their leather spines adorned with intricate golden filigree. sunlight streamed through stained glass windows, casting vibrant hues of crimson, sapphire, and emerald onto the worn wooden floor. dust particles danced in the sunbeam, creating an ethereal atmosphere of suspended time.
velma, her glasses glinting in the dim light, eagerly poured over crumbling manuscripts and delicate parchment scrolls. her nimble fingers traced faded inked lines, unraveling the secrets woven within the pages. ancient tomes whispered tales of forgotten rituals, mysterious disappearances, and long-lost legends.
daphne, with her resourceful spirit, scoured the library's hidden corners, pulling out drawers and flipping through the pages of faded newspapers. her fingers grazed delicate yellowed clippings, revealing headlines of inexplicable phenomena that had haunted the town for centuries. her determination led her to a hidden alcove, where an ancient tome lay tucked away like a forgotten treasure.
daphne opened the book, revealing a fold-out map that had remained untouched for generations. its yellowed edges crinkled as she carefully traced the faded markings. the map whispered of hidden passages and concealed chambers, leading to the heart of hollow creek's mysteries.
excitement surged through the group as the discovery unfolded before them. the map's delicate lines pointed towards a hidden tunnel, rumored to hold the answers they sought. but as you approached the entrance, a sense of trepidation washed over you, the darkness of the tunnel casting a foreboding shadow on your resolve.
turning to shaggy and scooby-doo, you expressed your fears, your voice laced with a mixture of anxiety and vulnerability. "i'm scared, i don't wanna go in. it's dark." you simply said, your voice shaking.
the duo looked at each other with understanding, their eyes reflecting the flickering candlelight, and shaggy's voice carried a soothing reassurance.
"like, we totally get it, y/n. dark places can be, like, really spooky, you know? but, uh, remember, we're in this together, and we haven't even gone in yet!" shaggy's voice quivered slightly, his empathy radiating from his lanky frame.
scooby-doo nodded in agreement, his expressive eyes filled with unwavering loyalty. "rhat's rrright!" he chimed in, his tail wagging ever so slightly, as if to provide a comforting presence.
the mouth of the cave welcomed you with a cool gust of air, as if exhaling its ancient secrets. you took a deep breath, the air tinged with the earthy scent of moss and anticipation. the gang, their wide eyes reflecting the dim light of the flashlight, stood beside you, their presence a reassuring anchor amidst the encroaching darkness.
stepping into the cave, the jaws of darkness eagerly closed behind you, swallowing the light as if it hungered for its warmth. shadows danced and flickered on the rough cave walls, their ethereal movements conjuring phantoms and specters that seemed to writhe and twist in the corner of your vision. the eerie silence was occasionally broken by the distant drip of water, echoing like whispered secrets through the subterranean labyrinth.
as you ventured deeper into the cave, the weight of the unknown pressed against your senses, causing your heart to quicken its pace. each beat reverberated through your chest, seemingly amplified by the vast expanse of the underground realm. the distant echoes of your footsteps mingled with the whispers of the cave, creating an eerie symphony that sent shivers down your spine.
shaggy's voice, though tinged with unease, cut through the darkness like a ray of light. "hey, y/n, you doin' okay? don't worry, we've faced scarier things than this! remember that time with the ugly ghost girl?" his attempt at levity brought a faint smile to your lips, reminding you of the countless adventures you had overcome together.
scooby-doo, his ears perked up, joined in with a reassuring bark, his tail wagging in solidarity. his presence was a comforting reminder that you were never truly alone in this eerie journey. the bond forged through countless mysteries became a lifeline, weaving a tapestry of courage that bolstered your resolve.
but as the tunnel stretched on, the darkness seemed to deepen, pressing against your senses like a suffocating weight. the whispers of fear crept closer, echoing in your mind, preying on vulnerabilities. doubt tugged at your footsteps, causing them to falter in the face of the unknown.
in the midst of your internal struggle, you, shaggy and scoob all found yourself behind fred, velma and daphne, you were no longer in the front.
you took a deep breath. steadying your trembling hand, you pressed forward, your steps resolute, guided by the collective strength of the gang.
"this place's even spookier than we imagined." shaggy's voice quivered, his words a testament to the palpable spookiness that filled the cave. the dim light reflected in his wide eyes, mirroring the apprehension that gripped your heart. but as he glanced at you, sensing the depth of your fear, his lanky frame straightened, a determination replacing his earlier slip.
"like, i didn't mean to make it sound scarier, y/n," shaggy stammered, his voice softer now, laced with empathy. "but hey, no worries, we totally got this! we've faced way creepier stuff before, remember the haunted amusement park?"
his attempt to allay your fears did not go unnoticed. you took a deep breath, your grip tightening on shaggy's arm, finding solace in his presence. his unwavering support, even in the face of his own fears, reminded you that strength could be found within the bonds of friendship.
scoob, sensing the tension, nodded in agreement, his tail tucked between his legs, a silent testament to his own apprehension. yet, despite his unease, he stood by your side, offering a steadfast companionship that warmed your heart.
as the tunnel curved and twisted, the darkness became an impenetrable veil, shrouding the path ahead in an eerie obscurity. every creak and echo magnified, playing a haunting symphony that danced with your imagination. but in the face of this mounting terror, you found solace in the shared fear that bound you, shaggy, and scooby-doo together.
you all pressed on, your footsteps cautious but resolute, each stride a testament to the unyielding spirit that propelled you forward. just as despair threatened to take hold of you, a faint glimmer of light pierced through the darkness, a beacon of hope drawing you closer. with each step, the intensity of fear gradually waned, replaced by a rising tide of anticipation that surged through your veins. the light grew brighter, casting ethereal hues of gold and amber upon the tunnel walls, as if nature itself celebrated your progress.
finally, the trail led the team to a massive stone door, its surface adorned with intricate carvings that spoke of the secrets held within hollow creek. the carvings seemed to breathe, their stories unfolding in a symphony of artistry and mystery. it was clear that this door held the answers they had relentlessly pursued, but opening it would require more than mere strength—it demanded the unraveling of a complex riddle.
velma, her intellectual prowess in full display, analyzed the carvings with unwavering focus. her eyes scanned the symbols, her mind connecting the dots with rapid precision. "to reveal the truth," she began, her voice resonating with confidence and purpose, "we must embrace the light within and face the shadows of our fears."
with velma's revelation, the stone door creaked open, its ancient hinges protesting the passage of time. the heavy slab yielded to your collective will, revealing a hidden chamber awash in a gentle, otherworldly glow. the soft light spilled forth, casting a serene ambiance upon the room, and as you stepped inside, the mural adorning the chamber walls greeted you.
fred's voice resonated with a mix of awe and determination, the weight of the discoveries settling upon the group like a mantle of responsibility. his eyes widened, reflecting the magnitude of the secret that hollow creek had guarded for so long. "so, this is what it's all been about," he said, his words carrying the weight of realization. "hollow creek has been guarding a secret that could change everything."
the gang stood together, your gazes fixed upon the mural that revealed the hidden truths. a sense of accomplishment radiated through the chamber, as each member of the gang absorbed the revelations before them. the tangled web of mysteries and conspiracies that had plagued the town was finally unraveling, and the truth now lay within your grasp.
yet, as a foreboding tremor coursed through the chamber, the atmosphere shifted once more. shadows twisted and writhed, their very essence taking on a menacing presence. it was evident that someone or something did not want the secrets of hollow creek to be exposed to the light.
in that moment of uncertainty, fred stepped forward, his voice commanding attention. his words carried the weight of determination, cutting through the tension that hung in the air. "listen up, gang! we've come way too far to back down now," he declared, his eyes flickering with unwavering resolve. "we'll face whatever's waiting for us together."
a surge of solidarity coursed through you all as you readied themselves for the final confrontation. the shadows loomed, their sinister forms threatening to consume the chamber. but in the face of adversity, the gang stood united, drawing strength from your unbreakable bond. shaggy and scooby-doo, in particular, exuded a bravery fueled by loyalty, their unwavering support an anchor in the storm.
the adventure had tested your bravery and resilience, taking you on a rollercoaster of emotions. through every twist and turn, the bond between you and your friends had grown stronger, a testament to the power of true friendship. even in the darkest moments, your unity radiated like a beacon, illuminating the path ahead.
together, you took another step forward, the darkness no longer quite as foreboding. with shaggy and scooby-doo close beside you, their presence like a shield against the encroaching fears, you knew that no matter what lay ahead, you had the strength and support to face it head-on.

writing prompt: Hunter researching Grimwalkers while hiding at Hexside
A better version of an old friend
A better version of an old friend
A better—
A chirp broke into Hunter’s thoughts, and he blinked, looking up at Flapjack. The bird dropped a bag of hex mix on his pile of blankets.
“Did you know, when you chose me? Did you know that I wasn’t a real witch?”
The words echoed in the empty auditorium.
Real witch
Real witch.
“Are,” Flapjack responded serenely, landing on his shoulder, “My witch.”
Hunter sniffed. “Thanks,” he muttered thickly, scratching the bird’s chin, “But that doesn’t really help me figure out where I came from.”
“Library.”
“You think they actually have books about…” Hunter’s voice stalled on ‘grimwalker,’ unwilling to let it loose into the air.
If you say it, it makes it true.
Hunter sighed, padding through the empty hallways of Hexside. His boots tapped and echoed on the tile floor, making it sound like there were many more people walking the halls.
Like the footsteps of ghosts.
Their footsteps.
Hunter shook himself, clearing the thought. The ghosts and spirits that existed bore few or no memories of their past lives, and only came when summoned. There weren’t any golden guard ghosts following him around, that was ridiculous.
He passed a cabinet filled with crystal balls and stopped, backtracking to it.
“Maybe if I…”
Hunter picked the crystal ball up, and a spirit twisted out of it.
“Hello?”
“What do you know about Grimwalkers?”
“Hello?” the spirit asked again, “Did someone send an abomination to pick the ball up, or is there a zombie infestation again?”
“Hey?” Hunter tried, “Can you see me?”
The spirit stared right through him, and Hunter’s hands shook on the orb.
“Maybe it’s the gloves?” he wondered aloud, and tugged one off. It didn’t make any difference. The spirit still didn’t give any indication that it could see him, and after a moment of looking, it dove back into the ball. Hunter’s hands trembled, and he shoved the crystal ball back on the shelf before he could drop it. “That one was—it must have been defective, right? Right.”
He picked up another crystal ball, but was met with the same blank stare. Hunter tore through the rest of them frantically, trying to get one of them, any of them to notice him, but they all treated him like… well, a ghost.
Am I dead?
I thought I got out of there, I could have sworn—
Flapjack chirped, and Hunter took a deep breath. No. Flapjack could land on his shoulder, he couldn’t be a spirit. He was here. He was real.
“What?” his palisman chirped.
Hunter closed the cabinet, running a hand through his hair and gripping it. “Oracle magic—it uses spirits, but it… it doesn’t work for zombies or ghouls or abominations or… or me. It’s—it only works for the living, Flapjack, it—titan.”
“Breathe,” Flapjack advised, “Library.”
“Right. Right, we’ll find more answers in a book than… right.”
Hunter continued through the hallways until he found the library, and he gingerly poked the card catalogue, scratching its surface to get it to open up.
“G… Ghouls… goblins… Gork the Mighty… grass magic… Grimwalkers!”
There were only a few titles. Pros: he’d only need one trip. Cons: that didn’t bode well for the amount of information he’d be getting.
Hunter could see the sky starting to turn red out the window, so he gathered up the books that were there and ran back to the safety of the auditorium, hiding on the stage behind the curtain. He curled up in the pile of blankets.
Deep breath.
Alright.
Hunter opened the first book, which simply read “Grimwalker” on the front. The title page inside extended.
Grimwalker: Monster, or Miracle? On the Ethicality of Creating a Grimwalker.
The subject of a Grimwalker is one fraught with many moral questions. Is it right to use the resources necessary, simply to create a being that will not retain the memories of its originator? Grimwalkers have a long nefarious history, often used in the savage ages to replace people in high positions with copies. In the few cases where an ortet lived at the same time as their doppelganger, the result was often a crisis of identity, leading to the death of at least one, if not both of the creatures.
Hunter closed the book. Maybe after he found out more about what a grimwalker actually was.
Grimwalker Extinction.
Nope, not that one, either.
The Legend of the Grimwalker.
Horrific abominations—
“Do you think they mean literally abominations?” Hunter asked Flapjack, “Or do you think it’s more like ‘AH! Creation of dark forces that is unnatural and never should have been brought to life in the first place!’?” He curled his knees up to his chest with a sigh. “What am I, Flapjack?”
“My witch.”
“No, I—I don’t want reassurance, I don’t want to get told everything’s going to be okay, I want answers. What I am. Why he made me, why he made us if he was just going to—to—”
Hunter shook his head, picking the book back up.
—created from the corpses of the dead. Those who made Grimwalkers were said to be skilled witches who carried dark secrets of life and death. The life of a Grimwalker requires stealing from the living, acquiring one ingredient from each organism required and wasting the rest. Precious galderstones, otherwise capable of great feats, are used to power its black heart.
“That’s why the crystal ball didn’t work,” he realized out loud, “Because I… I’m made of… dead things.”
A grimwalker could restore to life a pale imitation of relatives or friends, by robbing their grave for a bone. Desperate mothers created copies of their lost children, only to find that the resulting creature stared through their souls with magenta eyes that belonged to no living relative.
Hunter’s hand went up to his own face, touching gently beneath his eyes.
The rest of the book devolved into various sightings and popular folklore tales about Grimwalkers. After story number three about a grimwalker cloned by some evil warlock taking the place of a family member and then killing the whole family, Hunter closed the book.
A better version of an old friend.
“If we were ‘better versions,’ then why did he—did he—”
Don’t say it.
Hunter tugged on the old cloak he’d dug out of the lost and found. “So. To make… he needed a ‘bone of ortet.’ The question is… whose? I mean, I’d assume a witches, normally, but Belos is… he’s…”
Flapjack tilted his head.
“Right, you weren’t there. Belos is… he’s… human. He’s a—a—”
A witch hunter.
Don’t say it.
Hunter tugged his hood up. “Maybe. I mean. Maybe. I don’t… He’s human, but. It doesn’t matter. I’m…” he flipped the pages of the book back and forth. “I guess this… explains why I don’t remember my family? But that would mean—he said—I was fou—he said our family—”
“He lied,” Flapjack chirped gently, snuggling against his face.
“I don’t want it to be a lie!” Hunter burst out, slamming the book shut, “I want this to be a lie, I want—I want this all to be fake, I want to be told that it was all a—a trick, and that the fog those witches made was hallucinatory, and—and—” Hunter buried his head in his arms. “And I know it’s not,” he groaned, “I know that this, these arguments about why I should or shouldn’t exist, the legends about how I’m a monster, the fact that I might be the only grimwalker out there… I know it’s the truth. And I…” Hunter flipped the cover of the book open and closed. “I don’t know. I guess I just wish… I wish one of these books said something that wasn’t bad. I wish one of these books told me if I’m a witch or a human. If I’m a witch or a… a witch hunter.”
Flapjack let out what sounded suspiciously like a sigh. “Witch. My witch. All matters. Human. Or no. My witch. Not witch hunter. My Hunter.”
Despite everything that had happened in Belos’ mind, despite every book shouting ‘abomination’ at him, Hunter felt warmth bloom in his stomach.
“Thanks. I just wish…”
I wish I’d never seen it
I wish I could just not care
I wish he didn’t care that I knew
I wish it weren’t true
I wish…

KOKIA updates: March 2024
Below, I have summarized KOKIA’s recent announcements and messages. As explained here, this will remain the style of updates for now. It has so far worked out that I end up summarizing posts every month, so below are the updates from March.
Tumblr media
Once-in-a-lifetime meetings tour
Tumblr media
KOKIA had her first performance in her Once-in-a-lifetime meeting concert tour on March 10 in Kyoto. She talks about this ahead of the concert in her blog entry of March 7, looking forward to returning to Kyoto for the first time in quite a while.
In her blog entry of March 12, she reflects on the concert. The photo she attached to the entry is of the concert hall (the Kyoto Cultural Museum annex hall), as she really enjoyed the atmosphere, with the echoes from the high ceilings and the light coming in through the windows during magic hour right before sunset. (See also her Instagram post.) She was able to hold an autograph session, and enjoyed talking to people from the Kansai region this time. She hasn't been here in a while, so there were also some people who hadn't been to her concerts before or hadn't been able to go in a long time.
She's enjoying the difference of a tour versus performing in her home city of Tokyo and looks forward to her next concerts in the prefectures of Oita and Saga, coming up in April. She's never performed solo there before, but she's managed to almost sell out those performances already. The Tokyo performance in May is already sold out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Releases
No more performances in March, but KOKIA does announce merchandise for her current tour in her blog entry of March 17. Rolling with the theme of a once-in-a-lifetime meeting, KOKIA decided on an encounter with the unknown that would certainly be once in a lifetime: an alien! The T-shirt (black, new model for comfortable wear) and blouson (white, same model as for her 25th anniversary). Due to production costs, there will be limited numbers for sale, so she is currently running a pre-sale on her official webshop from March 18 to April 7. The merchandise should be shipped in time for the performance in Tokyo in May and will be signed if ordered via the webshop. They will also be for sale at the Tokyo concert, but if you don't want to miss out (and get it signed), ordering via the web shop is your best bet.
On a side note, some previously unavailable items such as the 3 albums in the Stars series, most of the Animal CDs, her 25th anniversary album ánd the limited edition Blu-ray of her 25th anniversary concert are back in stock, so if you've missed out before, now is your chance! International visitors will get the banner for WorldShopping enabling to place their orders too.
And finally, after the initial digital release of disc 1 of The Lighthouse, KOKIA announces on March 12 that the second disc is now also digitally available via various sources. Here is the direct link.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other news
As previously mentioned, KOKIA shares on March 12 that she now has an account on Twitter/X, KOKIAofficial. As she uses her blog for her longer thoughts, her photos on Instagram, songs on YouTube and news on her homepage, she was missing a channel to very quickly share short updates. She decided to give Twitter a try for this, intending to only use it for quick, time-sensitive news such as ticket information, releases and sales. So, if you have an account, you can now follow KOKIA!
Tumblr media
KOKIA also announced on March 12 that Kaji Fes 2023, which she performed at as a guest, will be broadcast on TBS Channel 1. March 23 was the original air date for day 2, KOKIA's performance day, but there will be reruns on April 7 (18:00-20:00 for day 1, 20:00-23:00 for day 2). The official page for this broadcast can be found here.
Finally, taking a peek at her Instagram, KOKIA teases she's recording a music video for the first time in a long while, so that's something to look forward to!

I adore Hidari's art, what do you think?
YES
YES YES YES
Literally one of my favorite FE artists in terms of the entire art for a game. Like I truly do have mad respect for Kozaki Yusuke and whichever artist did Three Houses (and I'm still out here being bitter that Amagaitaro was the character designer for Engage), but Hidari's artwork for Echoes was just so perfect. I mentioned it before but Hidari's artwork really did the most to invoke the medieval aspect of FEH. And the fact that they came back again to draw F!Byleth is great.
Sadly we've gotta only review their work on FEH to be fair to the other artists, but we know, deep in our hearts, that Hidari's artwork pwns and is a 10/10.
Anyways, Hidari is the artist for Brave Celica, Brave Alm, and "fallen" F!Byleth.
Their whole style is super unique, their colorwork almost looks like it's from the pages of a storybook, the lighting/shading is lovely, and their posing is great most of the time, though I will say Alm's felt like a bit of a miss, and both Alm's neutral and Byleth's neutral feel a little rooted... but it's still amazing artwork:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Extra note, I love the gleam of light on the hilt of Falchion for Alm's portrait).
But look at the dynamic of Celica and Byleth's art:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The work on the expressions is good too (well, for Byleth it's better than what we usually get).
Like I mentioned before, I think the biggest criticism is to work on their neutral portrait stances, but it's still very visually pleasing artwork to look at. And we know they have character range based on their work from Echoes.
Overall, I'd put Hidari's FEH art at a 9/10. For the most of their artwork from Echoes, it's a 10/10.

just throwing together some misc alan wake 2 thoughts now that ive slept and had coffee after finishing the game. mostly talking end game, obviously spoilers
alice. alice intrigues me so much. that final stinger is incredible, for multiple reasons. that reveal following the series of photos of her seemingly killing herself is just.. yeah. i think that was not only her way of trying to getting back to alan, who she knew was trapped in the dark place at the bottom of the lake, but it was also to throw scratch off, to think that he won by tormenting her to her death. theres no light flickers in the background of that final video. she is free of scratch, but still clearly safe. maybe back in the dark place, but tbh im not sure if she ever actually escaped it in the first place. shes going to leave the place with alan. she has to, because they are each others rocks. they sink or swim together (it would also explain why she was able to contact saga while she was in the dark place)
speaking of saga, her mind place version of the dark place was just *chefs kiss*. it was an incredible, worked really well to demonstrate not only the power the dark place has on people, but also what kind of a character she really is. strong and independent, but so good to those around her. i really wish we got deeper into her friend and partnership with casey tbh, after hearing about his divorce (which, btw, loved the extremely casual drop about him and estevez just "bonding over their ex wives". amazing job remedy) and especially seeing the birthday photo in the mind place just. my heart. i really wish we got more casey in general, but i guess him being included in the story beats and echo visions as a hardboiled detective just needs to be enough. for now i say knowing full well im gonna dive super deep into fanfics when my brain fog lifts a little ough
my one big question was door. and maybe tim to that extent, considering the last page we read and we never fully got an explanation about doors involvement (im hoping ng+ explains this further?) but it refers to tim as his "unwilling disciple" - obviously tim was moved to the dark place against his will, but at the same time, why exactly and what is he doing? hes been trying to get out, to figure it out, he has a whole whiteboard of theories and yet. it all leads to door. and idk maybe i missed it somehow, but i never fully made that connection as to why and what doors game here is. which leaves me with questions for the next game/sequel/dlc. intriguing, but throwing that in last minute just felt kinda. idk remedy dont do this to me lmao
one thing im admittedly a bit disappointed about was them choosing to sacrifice alan for the ending. i mean i get it, at the point where we think alice is dead and saga makes it very clear that neither casey nor logan can be hurt and that they are both the heroes of the story, theres not much options left. like alan said, the horror story needs a victim. but also idk, i wish we could. have had a choice? multiple endings?? which i guess ng+ teased but we'll see. also it being left unanswered whether we were free from the darkness now or not, which i understand was intentional but idk im still a bit miffed about that one lol. logan not answering the phone. however saga did have a wedding ring on her finger (i did not observe this detail before so idk if it was just always there but it felt very significant in this scene as they didnt show her being lefthanded before so) which makes me think everything did get fixed, considering how badly david hated her during points in the story, so why would she still wear her wedding ring after all those years after what happened if this wasnt the good reality again. just saying
ALSO IM JUST SO GLAD CASEY IS ALIVE. STUPID BASTARD MAN I LOVE HIM SO
"its not a loop, its a spiral" has interesting implications, but i miss "its not a lake, its an ocean" tbh. i feel like that ending revelation held more power to it than this one, it just feels like a rehash for the sake of copying the original. like i get what they mean about this one (its not a constant changing loop, its a developing story moving forward that keeps expanding as it goes even tho it feels like its going in circles), but just as a saying it doesnt stand up to the original. thats all
the way, even if they are sharing a skin, alan and scratch are two different characters (im excluding zane from this equation for reasons as i dont think he was real [im fairly convinced it was scratch playing games with alan just pretending to be zane], but i wanna give special props to ilkka villi for his portrayal. immaculate job) and are written that way. the way they talk, the lines they have, there is a significant difference when you pay attention to it - i think its partially alans way of trying to dodge the blame and put it all on scratch, whereas scratch doesnt do that for himself, hes just trying to play into the emotional manipulation angle with the constant rush instead to get what he wants and to get people on his side and to trust him. which is a really good take, considering that hes using all common scammer tactics to try to fool people into giving him what he wants (also just god the transformation scene when this is revealed? permanently tattooed in my brain that was so goddamn good)
its also a very interesting take that the cult is actually the good guys. i also just love ilmos explanation for it; "what kind of a cult calls themselves a cult" like. yeah. yeah man you got a point there. but that being just a cover and a scare tactic to keep people safe? love that shit that was good (kinda high key mad we didnt get more of them after that. only that one last sad tv commercial, would have loved to give them a good ending too)
also the parallel of alan waking up from getting shot to the head vs earlier zane doing to same thing at the second meeting in the hotel. i havent stopped thinking about it tbh
just. a few thoughts. all in all idk i felt like the ending was missing something tbh. maybe i just missed something, but it feels like it was more of a setup for something in the future with everything than an ending to a full game and a sequel 13 years after the original. i have too many questions left, more than i entered into this mess with. that being said, absolutely loved the game itself, the story is insane and incredible, this has once again rewired the way my brain thinks about stories (plot board my beloved......), theres so much underneath the surface of a survival horror game that cant be explained, it needs to be experienced. there are sequences here that im unable to convey in words and feelings, you need to see them for yourself ("we sing" and the movie theater. iykyk)
just in general that cliffhanger like. why you do me like this remedy. why. i cant wait for 13 years for another sequel. goddamn
the ending tho, im. i dont know. in the first game we knew things were still kinda wrong, but it showed that everyone outside of alan seemingly got out of the things unscathed for the most part (i mean we lost nightingale, rose went kinda loopy, there were signs that not everything and everyone was right but for the most part the town and people in it were safe), but here we dont see any of it. the happy deerfest is nothing but scratch's illusion. so idk if im meant to believe that shooting alan was the fix and everything went back to normal, like normal normal before this man was pulled into the lake, or since he was still seemingly alive after that, are we still living in the happy deerfest illusion forever while the darkness spreads to the land outside of it? i have so many questions and this ending didnt answer a lot of them tbh lmao
theres so much here i cant fit here my brains still very rattled from all of this and i keep getting more questions the longer i think about it so im gonna leave it here. i'll probably see you later with more when ng+ and/or dlc releases, as hopefully those will explain more
10/10, absolutely my game of the year ngl
..one thing to leave you with. fuck the boss fights in this game lmao

9, 12, 14, and 15 for the Fic Writer Asks!
Oh, hi! 👋
9) What's your fandom's most overused trope?
I'm not sure? I don't read that many FE fanfics, so... I honestly have no clue.🤷‍♀️
12) What writing rule do you refuse to break?
Proper formatting.
I've encountered so many fics I've been outright unable to read due to either tons of text being squished into a single paragraph (up to an extreme where I swear the writer forgot the Enter button exists) or the opposite problem where there's too much spacing, because both extremes just *murder* my attention span and leave me unable to focus on where I'm supposed to read. Same thing with missing brackets for direct character dialogue or other similar things.
I both want to write things I'd want to read myself and make my fics as accessible and readable to other people as possible, so formatting is something I almost tend to obsess over.
14) What aspect of writing have you had the most growth in?
I'd say character voices and POVs!
I really have to thank Valentian Reports for that, because since I forced myself to write at least one entry for every character in Echoes I had to juggle through a ton of POVs as well as make sure their entries sound like them and are in character.
15) We all project onto our characters. Where has your personality or life choices leaked onto the page the most?
Faye (Japanese: エフィ Efi) is a villager from Ram appearing in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. She was not present in Fire Emblem Gaiden and is a new addition to the cast introduced in the remake.

This list also includes updates for digital only games, such as the Nintendo Badge Arcade, a game that will both be unobtainable and unplayable (legally) after March. (I may update this list to reflect these games later, but don’t count on it). This also includes updates for games like Animal Crossing
The listed requirements were generally taken from the eshop, (although I did have to take a couple of entries from the Data Management section of my 3DS). This is relevant because the listed requirements on the eshop are generally 1 to 3 blocks higher than their actual size. For example, according to the eshop the Shovel Knight update requires 1378 blocks of storage, but according to the Data Management section of System Settings it only takes up 1376 blocks.
If you are reading this before March 27th and are looking for other eshop exclusives to obtain, this video has some good recommendations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXWz3cSGFe8 . There’s plenty of freeware, but you can also add money to your 3DS account by linking it to a My Nintendo Account and using the shop menu in your Account Settings. You can also add funds via your Switch account (if it’s linked to My Nintendo) or by searching games on Nintendo’s website and buying them there.
Linking 3DS to My Nintendo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJJUstNDl8Y

Sherbet’s Announcement
Tumblr media
I’m going to make a tag page for the people that want to be notified when I write reqs for certain fandoms (TWST will still be priority tho) if you want to be added please comment or send in an ask saying you wanna join the express delivery service!
Will write: Fandoms, I’m for sure going to write in and willing to write for Fire Emblem (Hero’s, Awakening, FE:3H, and Echoes)
Unsure: I'm definitely going to revisit some fandoms/games I watched/played to see how comfortable with writing the characters of the games but what I’m looking at right now, is Reins des fleurs, Pokémon, Collar x Malice, maybe some X-men fics. But again, these are all ideas, and not promises there’s no guarantee that I’d be comfortable being a content creator for aforementioned fandoms.
