BSD VS. LITERATURE: MURDER ON D STREET
The third entry in my long-running series analyzes every literature reference in Bungou Stray Dogs and tries to piece together the author’s intention in referencing the work.
Ranpo’s the only character whose ability name does not reference a specific book, but his entire character seems to be a reference to Ranpo Edogawa’s collection of mystery novels and his life’s work in general. However, the first chapter to feature him is named after his first story facing his primary detective Kogoro Akechi. Let’s root out the references underneath the cut.
1. Poe and Ranpo
Ranpo the character is not just a reference to the original author’s work, he’s a tribute to the mystery genre and detective fiction in general.
Ranpo is an incredibly prolific mystery author in Japan. He is credited as one of the biggest influencers in the Japanese mystery tradition. He was an admirer of western mystery novels, especially Edgar Allan Poe, and tried to make his own more Japanese-inspired tradition of mystery novels.
“His chosen name, in combination with his frequent allusions to works on crime and detective by mostly Western authors, demands that the reader or critic compare Rampo’s work with that of the famous western writers he references and consider them all as belonging to the same category. Ranpo believed that a Japanese detective story could match the work of Western authors in the modern ratiocinative tradition they had established. Some of his works bear directly on the debates surrounding the issue, such as “The Case of the Murder on D. Hill” itself which Rampo intended as a response to critics who argued it was impossible to set the secret incidents and mysterious dealings which formed the core of the modern WEstern mystery in the open, wood-and-paper houses of Japan and that it was thus a natural result of the Japanese way of life that Japan should produce no strong mystery tradition of its own.”
Edogawa Ranpo - The Early Cases of Akechi Kogoro Introduction
Ranpo set out to write Japanese mystery stories written in a Japanese way, so eastern authors could establish their own traditions. In the same way, Ranpo in Bungou Stray Dogs is always interacting with other characters inspired by Mystery Authors, Edgar Allan Poe himself, and Mushitarou Oguri another Japanese crime novelist who was western inspired (He was known as the Japanese John Dickson Carr). Yokomizo was named after Seishi Yokomizo. His pen named Kindaichi is named after his private detective character “Kosuke Kindaichi.” In the same way that Ranpo was dedicated to helping Japan create its own mystery tradition, Ranpo himself is someone who gathers other detectives around him and befriends them.
The relationship between Edgar Allan Poe and Ranpo in BSD itself is also a pretty heavy reference to the influence both share in their respective genres. Edgar Allan Poe is largely credited as being the first mystery author and “Murders in the Rue Morgue” as the first modern detective story. In the same way that Edgar Allan Poe invented mystery novels and inspired Ranpo, Ranpo then went on to inspire mystery novels in the east and be formative for the Japanese mystery tradition.
2. Murder on D Street / The Case of the Murder on D. Hill
There are several references to Kogoro Akechi’s first case in the first real mystery to feature Ranpo in the manga. The first and most obvious is the title itself. However, the fact that the murder takes place when a corpse is discovered in a river is a reference to Ranpo’s chosen pen name. "Edogawa” which Ranpo chose as a pen name uses the characters for the Edo river which borders present-day Tokyo to the south and was originally the lower course of the Tone River.
His pseudonym incorporates the geography of Edo, the old capital of the isolationist Tokugawa Shogunate, with the name of Poe, an American writer. This contradictory composition reflects Rampo’s own efforts to create a uniquely Japanese tradition of an imported genre.
Edogawa Ranpo - The Early Cases of Akechi Kogoro Introduction
In D. Hill, the murder itself is a bit of a parody of more western mystery novels. Most of the deduction takes place when Akeichi and his friend the narrator are discussing the details of a particular case that appears to be a locked room. At first, the narrator makes a solid deduction in the way a Sherlock Holmes or Western detective would immediately jump to the conclusion of a case based on connecting a large amount of small evidence noticed at the crime scene.
The two characters themselves are also avid mystery readers and make references to several other mystery novels.
“I know you’ve read Poe’s the murders in the Rue Morgue ad Leroux’s The Mystery in the Yellow Room, and I’m sure you know that Rose Delacourt Case in Paris. Even now, a hundred years alter, there are still mysteries surrounding that curious murder case. I’m recalling it now. Isn’t the way the perpetrator of tonight’s incident departed without leaving a trace somewhat similiar?” said Akechi.
The Case of the Murder on D. Hill
This was Poe’s first real attempt to create a locked room in a traditional Japanese paper wall and sliding door room. Poe even draws attention to that fact.
“It’s often been said that the kind of serious crime you find in a western novel could never happen in a Japanese building, but I certainly don’t think so, because of incidents such as this one. Somehow or other, although I don’t know if I can, I feel that I’d like to try my hand at solving a real case, just once.”
The Case of the Murder on D. Hill
The narrator goes through the process of deduction and comes up with a likely-sounding theory, that’s just like the kind of clever solutions in one of those novels. However, he comes to the wrong conclusion because he was thinking in mystery novel logic and Akechi goes out of his way to correct him.
The Murder on D Street chapter in BSD is structured in the same way, at first there’s an obvious culprit to the crime only for Ranpo to reveal that the culprit framed it as the mafia and there was another story behind it. In both cases too, the murder victim was killed by accident by her own lover.
In a way, Ranpo in his work goes out of the way to both parody and comment on the western genre of mystery novels themselves. Akechi even highlights that some of the guesses that characters leap to in those novels are ridiculous.
“For example, concerning my relationship with that woman, have you made a thorough and psychological investigation inot what sort of childhood friends we were? Whether or not there had been a past love affair between us in the past/ Whether or not I bore a grudge against her? Those aren’t the story of things you can guess at, are they...?”
The Case of the Murder on D. Hill
Akechi points out that rather than solving mysteries by jumping to conclusions based on evidence he tends to solve people psychologically.
“My methods are a bit different from yours. Physical evidence and things of that kind can take all sorts of appearances depending on the point of view. The best method of detection is psychological: to see through the depths of people’s heart.”
The Case of the Murder on D. Hill
Perhaps about this, Ranpo the character is a genius who can puzzle together the culprit of a murder with just a few pieces of evidence. At the same time, he is completely unable to understand psychologically the way people around him think.
“I don’t understand what anyone’s thinking! I’m scared! It feels like I’m surrounded by monsters! It doesn’t matter what I say - nobody understands me! My parents were the only ones who did, and they’re dead!” BSD. VOL 3
Edogawa Ranpo the author also created a mystery series for children known as the “Boy Detectives Club”. Yoshio Kobayashi, the assistant of Kosuke Kindaichi starts a detective club of his own right by gathering other children from his own school. In the third light novel, Ranpo’s father is a reference to Akechi Kogoro himself.
The man was a legendary detective. The “Headless Officer” case, the “Moonlight Phantom,” the “Cow Head Incident” - he helped solve several difficult cases that shook the nation.
If his father was Kosuke Kindaichi, then naturally Ranpo himself would be a reference to Kobayashi the boy detective. Which also fits his role of gathering all the other detective characters and forming connections between them. He also gained fame for being a young genius detective, and it’s also how he gained his home and his place with Fukuzawa and the detective agency.
Ranpo is also, much like the author himself a character who does not have a power like the rest of the ability users, trying to still create a name for himself. Ranpo Edogawa was an inspired and talented enough author to basically rewrite the japanese mystery tradition into something more unique. Whereas, Ranpo the character despite having no ability of his own is the most important character in the agency fights on the front line with everyone else. The same way Ranpo influenced the entire mystery genre in Japan, Ranpo the character also is the main reason the detective agency was created and the reason they all stay together.
Which speaks a lot of the importance of both the author and the character.

My part of the DCMK Fanworks Server Halfiversary Exchange 2023! For @blenderfullasarcasm!
I decided to follow the Yu-Gi-Oh! and DCMK crossover prompt, which specifically highlighted "Season 0," the colloquial name for the first anime adaptation of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. So, I paired Detective Conan (and the eensy-littlest bit of Magic Kaito) footage with that anime's theme song, "A Yell of Thirst" by Field of View.
For as long as I've known about it, I've had my own soft spot for the Season 0 series. The portrayal of Yami Yugi as this frightening, malicious personality who emerges only in times of danger gripped me—and still does. Revisiting the series for this project, I could still so strongly recall scenes of Yugi and his friends grappling with his mysterious "other self."
And I also realized that maybe Detective Conan and Yu-Gi-Oh! are more similar than I previously thought. After all, couldn't "Sleeping Kogoro" also be described as a frightening, malicious personality who emerges only in times of danger?
(Or, more in line with the actual video I edited, Conan is "another Shinichi" who both terrifies and helps him, a dynamic perhaps not so unlike that of Yugi and Yami Yugi in Season 0.)
I hope you enjoy what I came up with! My goal was to utilize clips featuring every character and relationship noted in the prompts, and though an AMV can't exactly be a casefic or delve into worldbuilding per se, I also tried to capture the spirit of those prompts, too, including more actual detective-ing and backgrounds than I ever have in my Conan AMVs before. Huge shout out goes to @dcmk-scenery, an absolutely fantastic resource who were a tremendous help, as well as the Detective Conan World wiki, which definitely led me to clips from episodes I haven't even seen yet! The English translation of the lyrics are also courtesy of the Yu-Gi-Oh! wiki.
As a final note, though I know the requirement for the exchange was a 15-second AMV, I really wanted to make my gift special; Blender is so kind and does so much for the DCMK community, including setting up this event in the first place! I'm so glad I was able to to be a part of this, and I hope my final result brings joy.
This AMV can also be watched on YouTube in full 1080p and with subtitles that can be toggled on and off. Sources used are:

TL;DR: In which Rei has constant nightmares but always had someone to cuddle him to sleep. He realizes that he and Akai aren't on that level but he's the only one available and Rei doesn't want to have a panic attack til morning. So yeah.
Cuddle Bug AU:
- Rei always had someone to cuddle him to sleep after nightmares
- the first time was when he dreamt of being abandoned by his parents, then woke up crying in his bunk bed
- one of the older kids was awake, calmed him down and hugged him to sleep because she knew what it was like
- Rei stuck with her all the way until she got adpoted
- (later Rei ran into her again while in the Academy and they kept in touch since)
- this trend continues with various people he could depend on at the time: his caretaker, some of his foster guardians, sometimes Akemi and Elena when he was in their clinic, and obviously, the zero squad.
- most notably date and hiro because date's massive and gives good hugs and hiro is cuddle size and rei feels safe with them
- blah blah blah, cannon happens, blah blah blah
- hes destroyed everytime each and every one of them got killed, and eventually he would either curl up into a ball after a nightmare having a silent panic attack til morning, or just goes to the closest cuddle buddy he has
- which most of the time is hiro, because hes like the only guy closest to him that hasnt died yet
- on days where he couldnt reach hiro rei would just go to his first cuddle buddy in the middle of the night and she'd hug him to sleep that way
- (she never complains, she has a boyfriend who's in the military and knows what kind of nightmares it gives people)
- (they got engaged and her fiance found out about rei, and was extremely understanding and became another one of his cuddle buddies too)
- (rei feels guilty of course, since hes intruding on their home and personal space, but they honestly dont mind. fiance guy was an only child and never had a sibling, and obvs fiance girl saw him as a sibling.)
- this continues trend continues even in the BO, and surprisingly, Curacao and Kir got added to the cuddle buddy list
- (Vermouth is an honorary member, depending on her mood)
- but rei still sticks with hiro most of the time tho
- (btw he told his now-married cuddle buddies that hes going undercover and he wont be able to reach them for their safety)
- (their worried of course, but rei asked kazami to keep them in the loop and kazami was like, - 'my best boss/friend actually finding a healthy coping mech and has someone to depend on? fuck yeah ofc i would.')
- rye was confused as to why scotch would always worry over bourbon whenever he's away on a mission when bourbon is the guy youd never worry about
- but then rye stumbled upon bourbon hiding in a corner when scotch's not home, eyes wide, shaking and crying silently and it physically pains him to watch it
- so yeah rye is added to the cuddle buddy list but under the emergency only category that featured giant, bold, red letters with underline and italics
- which puts him under even Curacao, Vermouth and Kir but rei actually trusts them to some degree and hes confident he can outrun them for a while
- but rye? the guy that could put a bullet to your head from ten skyscapers away?
- yeah no thanks
- Rei's utterly crushed when hiro offed himself
- look hes smart, he knows that angle the bullet was in couldnt have hit hiro from where ryes standing, but he just lost his best friend and closest cuddle buddy and somebody just happened to be a convient scape goat
- Rei runs to couple cuddle buddies to cry after that, and the two of them plus their 5 year old twins cuddled with Rei in the family convo pit thats converted into a giant pillow fort
- timeskip to current timeline
- the detective boys are added to the cuddle buddy list, so is ai (she has Rei in her list too, cuz they both understood what it feels like (plus theyve made up a long time ago)), masumi and ran (kogoro didnt like it at first and outright kicked our poor boy out when ran hugged him, but got torn into a new one by ran, conan and our cuddle family. added to the list soon after when rei came to find ran but she was away and he couldnt watch this baby-faced kid having a panic attack because hey, dad senses.)
- time skip to a few months later
- rei and akai are basically very reluctant allies (on rei's side) and very much made up besties (on akai's)
- FBI and PSB issued stakeout
- surprise surprise nightmare strikes again
- so rei had no other option but to use akai because he isnt in the mood to have a panic attack til morning, nor could he afford to
- was gonna criticize akai for being a shit cuddler but unfortunately, our tall and thin as a stick boy here was actually on date's-level of comfortness
- so yeah, rei came by to him more often since he's just geographically closest to him, and he knows he cant always bother the mouris or agasa and ai during the night since the kids have school
- akai on the other hand doesnt go to school, even if okiya subaru was required too
- and rei basically moved in every night
- yeah they are practically dating by now
- i mean, rei taking over the cooking since he insisted on thanking akai and would not condem himself to eating okiya subaru's barely edible curry 24/7?
- akai buying extra pillows and blankets for rei since he knows our blondie still gets cold at night?
- rei making coffee for akai in the morning?
- akai dragging a dusty old futon from the kudou's back closet for rei to sleep in, plus washing and cleaning it during the day for him?
- rei having a bag of work clothes over at the kudou mansion since he lives there at night and needs to go to work in the morning?
- akai dognapping haro because he read that dogs get lonely at night if they dont have their owners nearby on reddit and because he knows that rei always worries about the white fluff ball even when he cant think straight?
- them both getting each gifts on holidays and their birthdays?
- eventually cuddling in front of the tv and watching a show or movie together while spooning with a bowl of popcorn in the middle of the night?
- cheek kisses? forehead kisses? hair ruffles? courtesy of akai?
- rei basically cleaning the house from head to toe one night because he deemed akai's sniper nest to be uninhabbitable?
- comfort foods for each other well stocked in the fridge? borrowing the others coats and jackets to sleep in when the other's not home?
- sorry guys youre basically married now.

Hey bro, any thoughts on the latest files with Heiji and the monks? What about that easter egg for the next case, regarding that long lost detective that will be back, is Gosho hinting at Saguru? Or just Shinichi? Do you think the next files could be Rum arc resolution?
File 1116-1118 Review
Tumblr media
I enjoyed the case a lot overall. Already starting from File 1116, Ran was getting a proactive role in the Heizuha romance plot, which I found so refreshing and endearing (since Ran has gotten so sidelined lately).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole monk themed case was a such a nostalgia trip as well, and I love how Gosho also gave our other Mouri, Kogoro, a proactive role in the case, showcasing once again his judo moves.
Tumblr media
As for the Heizuha confession build up, that started since File 1113 (Muga shinkansen case), contrary to my expectations, it still didn't pay off in any way, as Heiji once again failed due to forgetfullness (File 118), despite Ran's efforts.
Tumblr media
What however made this quite disappointing was that even the Hyakunin isshu tournament setup from the previous case was also resolved off-screen and didn't remain as a potential plot-thread to a future official confession case setting. However, that very same Momiji scene that resolved the tournament setup also gave a teaser/foreshadowing to Momiji potentially starting to act more actively towards her romantic goals with Heiji. She referenced a Hyakunin isshu poem that bears a similar message to "time is money", where she mentions that time can easily pass by in the blink of an eye if one keeps acting indecisive (File 1118), as if she is planning on officially making her move soon.
Tumblr media
This could be Gosho still building on the confession-anticipation momentum from the this and the previous case, and that the next upcoming case could still tie into the Ōoka/Heizuha subplot in some way as the official confession case approaches. If not, then it will truly feel like Gosho wasted an actual opportunity of building up tension towards an eventual confession.
As for the teaser of a long lost detective finally reappearing in the next case, it does fit with the idea of it being Hakuba Saguru (who fans have kept nagging Gosho about when he will return in DC). This also fits with the AC teaser that he will be drawing a vertical double-spread magazine cover featuring Kid.
Tumblr media
While this may seem as an immediate confirmation that it will be a Kid case and that there will be no further Heizuha/Ooka material in the next case, there is still potential that Gosho is actually planning on intertwining them again, like in Fairy's lips case (File 1018-1021) & Queen's bangs case (If the falcon elder is Former prime minister [FPM] Ōoka). This is due to Gosho also promoting M27, which is a Heizuha-Kid Movie, in the same magazine as the double-spread, and he also teased in another AC that he will be drawing the Naniwa (Osaka) duo in the poster art for M27.
Tumblr media
In other words, there is still hope that Momiji's teaser in the latest chapter bares importance in the following Kid case. Also, if the ongoing speculation that the falcon motif seen with the Falcon elder belongs to the Ōoka family and that they are related to Hakuba Saguru (who has his own Falcon pet) is true, then this upcoming Kid/Hakuba case would further be inviting more Ōoka/Heizuha material (that potentially keeps the Heizuha plot streak going).
While not impossible, these AC teasers does lessen the chance of us getting Rum climax in the upcoming case, unless the teased detective was meant to be Shinichi all along (which I currently feel is unlikely, since Crimson School Trip did not happen too long ago).

As I was writing this I realised, weird it is. I like Aoko and so I like her mom but this chapter in hindsight was trying to overexplain.
Spoilers
So the new Magic Kaito chapter is similar in small ways to that birthday chapter. It's Midoriko's 40th birthday and Nakamori is a no show though he went to great lengths to book a table at a fancy restaurant for the three of them according to Aoko. Aoko exclaims for the first time in front of her mom about Kaito Kid who has no idea who that is and despite being hyperobservant she keeps misremembering the phrase Kaito Kid. Theres a meta joke that makes no sense in-universe where Ke says she thought Aoko's mom died since she hasn't seen her in forever. Aoko and her mom barely get to talk on most days because mom being the district prosecutor goes to work early(after making breakfast and a packed lunch for Aoko, Ginzo and sometimes Kaito) and comes home after Aoko's gone to sleep and her being extremely workaholic and sleep deprived she sleeps whole day on her holidays. And because she and the inspector fought a lot over work early in their marriage they made a pact to not talk about work at home at all(one assumes they do talk or communicate although this chapter...). She has seen some news clips of Kaito Kid and thought he was some circus act(Ma'am...your husband features in most of those clips) and at once rattles off a list of offences he should have been charged with. And asks why he hasn't been arrested yet😅. But most importantly she is determined to put him in jail because he made her Gin-chan miss his birthday dinner (if only you knew about the last 20 years...). And thereafter she starts concocting a Conan style plan with Aoko's help while Kaito is a bit scared of the challenge because she once figured out the mechanism to baby Kaito's magic trick easily.
(As for Nakamori I get the feeling that the later him, especially the one in Conan, changed somewhere. The early him was quite like Kogoro in all the drinking and womanizing and antics. In that sense Magic Kaito's continuity is a bit off(not to mention it used to be 1990 and now it's set in the era of smartphones) but poor Aoko has two parents obsessed about their work.
He overexplained because he knows he hasn't set up her mom being in the picture at all and is trying to course correct. However he also wants them to have a healthy relationship, something that just isn't possible with the set up he went with. If he really needed her mom to exist, why couldn't she have been working overseas to explain her absence? Or be estranged from her family and use these chapters to reunite the family unit?
It's a weird choice and I think it's just a good example of his poor writing choices at times.

What happens when a DCMK fan gets into Code Lyoko? Well, they make this apparently...
Welcome to Code Meitantei, a Code Lyoko Fusion AU for Detective Conan. Featuring: -Shinichi's first attempt at virtualizing himself ending in him getting shrunk into Conan instead of taking APTX-4869
-Haibara being the Aelita surrogate of the AU and being lovingly called 'Ai' by this AU's Lyoko Warriors
-The Detective Boys + Conan being the Lyoko Warriors, featuring all the horrible shit that comes with that title
-XANA being much more scary because this is a MURDER MYSTERY manga
-Akemi Miyano being the Waldo Schaeffer/Franz Hopper of this AU, complete with being called 'Masami Hirota' by most of the cast (If you get the reference to this one and why there's a name distinction, kudos to you)
-Ran and Heiji being unofficial Lyoko Warriors due to being the only teenagers who can actually hold their own against XANA
-The Black Organization being Project Carthage
-Kogoro doing his best impression of Jim Morales
And finally:
-Conan being so sarcastic while being the Jeremie Belpois surrogate that he makes FuniDub Conan look like the nicest guy on earth.
Anyway, if you want to see me showcase this AU in full, pls tell me. This AU has been stewing in my brain for so long.

one of the earliest anime series i watched was called detective conan, it was shown on a kids tv channel when i was young. have any of you seen it? this was probably where my fondness for the mystery genre started. i came across some fanart recently and it made me feel nostalgic. i decided to recreate 2 of the characters in TS3: kogoro mouri (blue) and ginzo nakamori (green).
i was actually inspired to make those new beards, because i wanted to give kogoro and ginzo some accurate ‘stashes 😆
for their facial features i just winged it. i gave them their pointy noses, thin expressive brows, and strong square jawlines. the anime art didn’t give me a lot of detail to work with lol technically they use the same base sim just w diff hairs brows and beards

I - III - V
(3/3) Possessed Nakamori (as featured in MK1412 ep. 8) created for @cartoonsbyandie for the DCMK FF Server Exchange! \o/ I got really ambitious with this one and created a set of five fake DCMK TCG cards (only three for which I managed to create art t.t) following the theme of the prompt:
Something with the cursed necklace from the Magic Kaito episode 'Adult's Charm...'
So now that they've all been posted, I tried to design these cards around a hypothetical moveset that changes the original Detective cards (like Kogoro) into Criminal types using The Eye of Lucufer. Regular Nakamori and Criminal Kogoro were the two artworks I didn't get around to making ;^; but there might be a plan for that eheheh
Personally, I think it's a shame the necklace doesn't get used more than once ~<~ I think it's implied otherwise in the episode, but I subscribe way more to the idea that its primary function isn't necessarily to fulfill the wishes of its owner (Akako's desire to erase KID) but is instead to pervert the ambitions of its wearer. Nakamori's commitment to bringing KID to justice spirals into a simple-minded, zombie-like drive to just "get" him, even if it means shooting him dead. So what would happen if it were put around someone else's neck? Kaito? Hakuba? Jii, even?

ccan i be crazy for a second as a Detective Media Consumer
Tumblr media
this post actually drives me nuts and normally i'd be like whatever everyone on the internet uses hyperbole but op clearly doesn't know much about the genre or archetype and the fact that a bunch of people who also don't know a lot about the genre agree with them is a littleee aggravating likeeeee
while they aren't wrong that plenty of fictional detectives are affiliated with law enforcement most of them are not
arguably the most influential ones aren't affiliated with law enforcement and hate cops, not just sherlock holmes
'all of them should be weirdos about-' they are. they are amateurs who enjoy mystery solving.
it's worth noting -- bc op brings up holmes in the tags of their og post -- that holmes popularizes the fictional detective archetype and that's why many of them are actually not police detectives
let's look at a few of them
philo vance: famously hated by the police, messes with investigations for fun
john dickson carr's gideon fell: another amateur detective, also annoys tf out of the police
edogawa rampo's akechi kogoro: literally a college student with a hobby (sound familiar?) who often runs circles around and deceives the police to get culprits off the hook when he feels like it
soji shimada's kiyoshi mitarai: an astrologer and college professor who gets brought cases by his crime enthusiast boyfriend, hates the police and nearly gets arrested by an officer for being disrespectful
seishi yokomizo's kosuke kindaichi: another amateur sleuth who's often underestimated by police investigators
yukito ayatsuji's kiyoshi shimada: a buddhist monk who solves mysteries part time because he's a mystery enthusiast
nisioisin's iichan: literal college student, solves mysteries because he happens to be there
nisioisin's jun aikawa: a freelancer in many fields who isn't solely a 'detective,' but isn't tied to any one organization or agency
etc etc etc
like yeah there are many detectives who are even p.i's that are often affiliated with or working with the police (L from death note, shawn spencer, etc) to act like they're typically written or portrayed like a cop character is so...??
when. a very clear, defining facet of the archetype is that they aren't part of the police force. and it's usually because these stories often feature officers as their culprits. like. .
not to mention that many of these characters are also meant to solve their crimes in unconventional ways, apart from the bureaucratic methods of a crime scene investigator - again they are Guys With a Hobby they're Mystery Enthusiasts and i'm sure a lot of authors find more freedom writing a private investigator than a cop because cops are supposed to wrap things up a certain way. they're supposed to be aiming for arrests. sometimes a detective doesn't want to do that. sometimes they want to solve the crime, lie to the police, and get the culprit off the hook bc they know the truth and don't think that the culprit deserves to get jailed and they dgaf if that's "right" or "wrong" in the eyes of the system
like i do think that a lot of more 'mainstream' media like criminal minds or CSI or whatever do portray a very different sort of detective but traditionally your fictional detective is a private investigator and their stories usually mandate that the police are incompetent, corrupt, etc in order to benefit the amateur sleuth who usually has poor rapport with them
it's definitely rarer to find detective media where zero cops are involved, i get it, but i think it's crazy to completely ignore that the entire genre originated from and is built off the backs of guys who cannot mind their own business to save their lives

4. My favorite fanart from the fandom
Woah this is a tough one! hmm. Man. Im the kind of person who has a hard time really narrowing down favorites at times.
off the top of my head... This drawing of keroro n dark keroro by putameke is super cool.
i love the lineart of this cute drawing of shinkeroro and blackstar by squishieeeeee
and the coloring style of this platoon group pic by soran is CRAZYYYY
97274's short comics (or well. the ones ive seen translated to english anyway) are fucking BONKERS like hourrghuhghgu. There's a few more aside from this one but i think they are a wee bit dark so ill spare you.
pyriteplates' comic of the day giroro got his scar is also super good.
You really cant go wrong with the stuff metoraronika over on twitter draws. So nice.
this doodle of the platoon driving a car is super fun

7. My least favorite character
OOOOOO hmmmm...
I really don't like the Japanese voice acting for officer Poyon and Lavie. They both sound WAY too forced and overly cutesy. it gets on my nerves. I hate Poyon's voice more than Lavie's by a long shot though.
Bariri might have a decent character design but he is very easily hateable. Man, his behavior is so... eugh. I do not like this guy.....
and ziv... i know ur a Kogoro / 556 truther but I'm sorry his episodes usually aren't that interesting to me. You may cyberbully me now <3

Hey there~
Do you have a HC about Shizuos favourite pieces of media, be it a movie a series or a book (or all three) ?
YESYESYES!! I have a bunch of hcs about his favorite kinds of media, but my awareness of Japanese media is limited so I’m just gonna be a little... vague on exact titles outside anime.
I hc Shizuo being aggravatingly picky about movies and shows. Words have meaning and movies and shows are frequently filled with redundant dialogue to him mixed with too much other bullshit to keep track of. Except for Kasuka’s movies which it then becomes a feature. <3
He likes movies and series where the settings are more fantastical, more romantic, with characters he can relate to. I agree with @kasururigoth about him liking Ghibli films, particularly Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle. He sees a lot of himself in San, and while he initially is annoyed by Howl, he comes to understand him the more he watches and was absolutely suckered in by Sophie kissing him at his most monstrous (rip shizuo i know you would’ve loved the shape of water). He's drawn to Miyazaki films in general because peace is a core message in nearly every Ghibli film and he appreciates that.
For similar reasons, I think Rurouni Kenshin is his favorite anime and he looked up to Kenshin as a role model as a kid. Before Traugott I guess. I doubt Shizuo had many role models that weren’t scared of him growing up lol
I actually think he’s less picky about books. They’re much cheaper to replace if he gets carried away, and he can avoid getting carried away by picking up and pausing where he’s reading more easily than with movies or shows. They’re also easier to process all at once, he doesn’t have to analyze the score or cinematography or the actor’s performance because the information is all laid-out for him. He usually doesn’t seek them out, but if his friends or Kasuka recommend something he’s much more willing to check them out.
His favorite genre of fiction is honkaku mystery and he has SO MANY opinions on it. He’s usually more of a I-like-what-I-like kind of guy, but since I hc detective novels being the only books he actively sought out from childhood, he’s developed a sense for the common themes within the genre. Avid hater of Sherlock Holmes and with good reason, his deductions don’t make any logical sense (they really don’t) and it pisses him off when he always magically pulls them out of his ass at the end. His favorite writer is Ranpo Edogawa and his titular character Kogoro Akechi was his inspiration to want to become a detective. He also has a complex that Izaya is his Endo Heikichi, but he doesn’t verbalize it.
His fave mystery anime/manga is Monster, and he has a weird admiration/crush on Tenma. Another one he loves and continues to catch up on Ghost Hunt, but he’s incredibly secretive about it and asks Celty to transport the volumes for him because it’s a shoujo series he used to read back when his mom was still buying him shoujo magazines.
Bonus Shizaya (kinda) hc:
I hc that Shinra, Shizuo, and Izaya are all attracted to the mystery genre because they like unraveling them. Shinra is very outspoken about the books he likes and will bring them up to Shizuo and Izaya both with an impromptu infodump. If he’s talking to Izaya (listening, asking questions about the content of the book) and it sounds interesting enough, Izaya will give it a shot. If he’s talking to Shizuo (half-listening, asking if it’s available at the bookstore on his way home from work/school) and it’s under 600 yen, Shizuo will give it a shot. Occasionally they’ll both be reading the same book and when Shinra asks about their thoughts afterwards, one of them will talk about about how they figured it out from a certain part of the book and Shinra lets them know that “hey, Shizuo/Izaya came up with the same deduction!” and kills the conversation in its tracks.

Anime Talk - Bungou Stray Dogs
I've been thinking a lot on what to do for my anime post this month. I'm still not sure I have settled, but let's pretend I have.
Now, about Bungou Stray Dogs: Do you know what it is? If not, go watch it and find out. The 4th season just started and I have just finished watching the 3rd episode. It's good. I have already watched 3 seasons of it, so of course I think so.
It's not like I have anything interesting to talk about regarding this anime to be perfectly honest. I just love it and want to talk about it. Especially now.
In case you haven't seen it yet, I can reveal that the first 3 episode of season 2, 3 and 4 all contain some backstory on the characters. My friend had told me who were up to have their backstory revealed this season, but I somehow forgot that. I don't know how that happened. I mean, one of the characters is my favorite character in the series, Edogawa Ranpo.
Why is he my favorite?
It started with tiny reasons. For one thing, the character's Japanese VA is someone who's voice I have heard a lot in other series, so I was naturally interested because of that. Furthermore, the real Edogawa Ranpo was a mystery novel author who created Akechi Kogoro and the Fiend With Twenty Faces. (There is an anime called TRICKSTER that uses these characters among others of his creation, which I watched before this one and absolutely love.)
That's what made me pay him attention to Edogawa RAnpo in Bungou Stray Dogs. Then I discovered how good he is a deduction, how he loves sweets, how quirky he is, and did I mention that he's the absolute closest thing to a detective in that series and he is brilliant?
I'm trying not to be biassed or anything, but honestly, I think the episodes where he is featured and really gets to do things are my favorite episodes of that whole series. The 3 opening episodes of season four could easily take the top spot.
I could talk about Ranpo for a while longer, but that would mean I would accidentally spoil things, so let's get back to the original topic.
In general, Bundou Stray Dogs is a really good series. I don't care that much for the protagonist, Nakajima Atsushi, but I care a lot for the majority of the other characters.
Also, seeing as all the characters are based off of famous Japanese authors, it has made reading texts by these authors in class really interesting. Last year, we read a text written by Fukuzawa and one written by Mori. I think there should be more in the coming semester, but I don't remember at the moment and can't be bothered to check. Unfortunately, I highly doubt I'll get the oppertunity to read something by Edogawa Ranpo, so I'll probably have to find one for myself someday.
Okay, enough talking before I go off on one again. Thank you for reading.
Have you watched Bungou Stray Dogs? If you have, what did you think? Who is your favorite character?

The featured detective of volume two - Kogoro Akechi!
It's odd to see him with short hair and pinstripes given the main association I have with that name, ahaha...

New OP! And KID is already featuring in them <3
This is just a filler but Ran indulging on Shinichi's interests was so goddamn cute T-T I wish we got more of this from them, the two playing and having fun together people watching and trying to guess their professions.
Ran everytime Shinichi runs off: I need to get him a child leash. And to take him to the doctors because he needs the toilet way too often.
Small kid privilages, you can be incredibly suspicious but people will just assume that you're playing and you can hide in small places no adult would expect to look (unless the person is a crazy motherfucker like Gin is) to find someone spying on them.
Even the fillers know that Kogoro doesn't truly just love Eri which is sad because it's clear she still loves him T-T Like how can you still be in "love" with someone but also be obsessed with other women...
Kogoro is really lucky that Shinichi covers his ass, really, the amount of people he accuses of murder without proof is relentless.
For once the evidence of the crime isn't incredibly flimsy XD
