Recent reads!

I read Gideon and Harrow back to back in September and October and they were so good! I know I'm so late to read these, but if you haven't read them yet, this is your sign. I'll be reading Nona the Ninth as soon as my local bookstore has the paperback in stock.

After that, I finally got around to reading Frankenstein. It's a really accessible classic, and I was surprised by how lonely the book felt. I was really struck by the way both the creature and Frankenstein's loneliness mirror each other.

Finally, I started Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series. The Final Empire was my first Sanderson book, apart from the short novella he wrote for Magic the Gathering. It's an excellent high fantasy, but I'm sure this isn't an original thought, because it's over 15 years old.

This isn't a monthly wrap up, exactly, because I've been reading lots of 500+ page books, and they take a hot minute to finish.

I have literally spent my entire day reading 19th century fiction. Project Gutenburg is evil; it gives me too much to read.

OOHHHHH so th the book starts with a super long introduction about his parents and what a loving family he had his whole life

And then the science child was kicked out because he had the wrong eye color and left to fend for himself and yet they both caused the events in the second act that's some DANG good parallel arcs aaaaaaa

finally cleaned out my bag for the semester, so bag tour it is. (i haven't picked up my textbooks yet, so i only have these and a couple other books in here so far.)

bonus, i couldn't get a decent photo of it, but my favorite perfume ever in the bottom right corner is coffee date by replica. (i also use athletic tape for my loose joints, hooray.)

mmm yesterday i drew a connection between geralt (and witchers in general ) with frankenstein’s monster… cant stop thinking about now… the monsterous man-made creature, an abomination to all things natural and holy, misunderstood as a violent unfeeling monster, ostracised bc of that but really is a deeply thoughtful and compassionate man with complex emotions… yeah that. sure im not the first to make that comparison and im sure sapko likely wrote it like that with intention! i can’t wait to think about it alot more (also?? interestingly both were fundamentally mischaracterised through screen adaptations to be made into a grunting brick shit house, completely stripped of all the emotional and intellectual complexity that shape them as a person and character, i just find that really curious)
