donnie had. SO. much concept art lol. i really enjoyed the whole design process though. his base design is very difficult to work with because of the battleshell, but it gave me a lot of chances to get creative and i'm happy with the results :)

(also as a disclaimer so i don't get asked about this: i don't have motivation to finish raph or the wish art for donnie, so i'm just posting what i've got)

i didn't annotate these as much since there'd be a lot to write, but i'll write out some of my thought processes and go into some detail about his final design below the cut if you're interested! (it's long. i'm talkative 😔)

1st row - first iteration; much more literal 1:1 translation of his design into a fantasy setting. very steampunk-y. ended up completely scrapping it because, simply put, he looked more like an npc than a playable character. obviously, several features did still carry over throughout the design process :3 also wanted to imagine his attack pattern cuz i thought it'd be fun to incorporate his spider arms.

this was actually the first design of any of them i'd come up with! i've definitely learned a lot about genshin's character design style since then and i think it shows 😂

2nd row - playing around with the idea of a floating battleshell (rather than a backpack-like one in the the show & first version), inspired by nahida's cape. also hard light constructs/attachments. was leaning too into the sci-fi and rectangular motifs with the design, but i liked the idea.

3rd/4rth rows - concepts for his final outfit and shell designs (the colored/more-detailed pics are the more finalized ones). took a lot of inspiration from sumeru this time around. it's a lot sharper, shinier, and less rectangular than his og aesthetic, but i think it's more in-line with genshin's design philosophies.

5th row - not entirely sure why i went through all the trouble of making a 3d model for this. i mostly just thought it'd be fun and good for reference. i was right, but i don't know what to do with it now lol. can't be bothered to be a perfectionist about it though, so don't look too closely at it 😭

6th row - incomplete thumbnails of his burst/wish art. not super sold on that "wing" design in particular, but i do like the idea of his shell splitting and deploying hard light weapons/rocket launchers/etc sort of like in canon.

battleshell/misc notes - i'm thinking his battleshell is controlled using the pink sensor on the back of his coat, possibly in combination with his headset. it floats behind him by default and is sturdy enough to protect his back, but he can also freely fly it around like a drone if he wants. the holes on the side are mainly for the spider arms and the banners(?) and handles(?) with the blue/pink gradient are made of hard light and only appear when the shell is in use.

i imagine like in the series, his tech here isn't necessarily very reliant on his vision/powers; much of it he likely made himself long before he received a vision and he just uses his vision to enhance it.

his burst is a barrage of missiles from his shell that lock onto an enemy and deal a large burst of electro damage in an AOE. not sure if i want his skill to be a deployable or some sort of electro-infusion/boost 🤔 maybe something that involves deploying his shell to boost his damage while leaving him vulnerable, like a glass canon? though i'm not sure he'd be that sort of risk-taker... 😅 dunno! his signature weapon would totally be his tech bo though.

Yo back up Donny tried to comfort Raph? This I gotta see

Yes but first of all you have to sit through my rant about this entire scene

They're all standing back to give Donny his space with Leo. They're all worried, hands clenched, tense, but Raph's the only one with his arms crossed over his chest. He's close off right now. They're sharing vulnerabilities, emotions. Raph is not. He doesn't want to. He doesn't want anything to show.

Raph scoffs and jokes "I think you got him hanging on your every word, Don." And Leo stirs. Casey's the one who comments on it, saying, "I think he heard you, Raphy."

Everyone looks kinda intent on this revelation, surprised, but determined. Raph genuinely looks surprised and stunned and almost dare I say frightened? Some of that emotion is leaking through.

Then Mikey does his story, and Raph is... less than impressed. His arms are crossed over his chest again, he's scoffing, he's insulting Leo, saying he's not waking up because he's afraid.

He gets upset. "He got his butt whooped, and now he's too chicken to come back and face it!"

Mikey looks worried, upset, but Donny gets this moment of... Realization. He knows what Raph's doing. He knows Raph's going to say things he doesn't mean. He knows Raph.

Donny says, "that's enough, Raph." He doesn't scold him, or get mad at him about it. Just. Set his hand on his shoulder and says that's enough. That's enough getting angry at Leo when we all know that it's not Leo you're angry at.

Raph's trying really hard. He turns away from Donny. He's squeezing his eyes shut. He's trying not to cry. This is the comforting part I mean.

He shakes Don's hand off, which surprises Donny. Implying this method has worked to calm Raph down before.

"Well I say who needs ya? It's not like we can't get on without you playing fearless leader." Interestingly when Raph says that they'd be fine without him, it focuses on Leo, who is bruised and unconscious and spent hours in the rain trying to escape the Foot because he couldn't bring them back to April's. He knew he couldn't bring them back to April's. He could have gotten help there, but that would risk putting his family in danger.

Then, when you see Raph again...

He's crying. And Donny's shock has turned to genuine concern for Raph.

And he turns away from Donny more, and Donny's expression softens from concern to understanding. The fact that this scene is set up like this, where Raph is crying and Donny is the one watching him in the background, it hits me a certain way. Donny doesn't cry. Not after Kirby, not after Honeycutt, not when he realizes that he's going to have to kill his entire family to stop the Shredder. (In Exodus and in SAINW.) But Raph's here, crying, at their first big defeat. One of them has been defeated, broken, and only lived because their enemy was playing with him like a cat toy.

And Donny is RIGHT THERE.

Anyway, Raph tells the story of how he accepted Leo's leadership when they were kids, that strongest and bravest do not necessarily make for the best leader who makes the best decisions for the team.

And he's struggling again. "I don't even know why I told you that story. I guess I just... What I'm tryin to say is..." And he can't finish his sentence. He just trails off he clutches at his head, his face, he can't look at anyone, can't let them see the expression he's making.

And Leo, who has only reacted to Raph's voice this entire time, is only shown to be reacting to Raph's voice, stirs again.

Splinter reassures him this time. "Your brother hears you, Raphael. He understands."

And Raph, he doesn't say anything. He just. Goes to the window. And imo is processing the fact that he knows they can't survive without Leo. They need their fearless leader (a nickname that Raph gave him in the first place.) That's what that story meant. They need Leo. Raph needs Leo.

anyway the whole scene makes me incredibly emotional. The farmhouse arc wasn't just a Leo arc, it was very much a Raph arc as well. It was learning his brother isn't fearless. Isn't invincible. Leo is breakable. Raph literally helps Leo put himself (and his swords) back together. And I don't think Raph would have ever realized that Leo needed that kind of help if this scene hadn't happened earlier.

Cause the thing is, Leo was afraid. He was terrified of coming back and facing that failure. Failure is SUCH a big part of his character, his fear of it, his fight against it, and Raph... Raph hit the nail on the head. But telling stories of the times Leo was strong, the times that his family has needed him, was what brought Leo back.

And I think Raph realized at that point that. Maybe Leo needs help sometimes. Maybe he isn't Mr Perfect Ninja Son. Maybe Raph can be the one to help.

It was happening. The red eared slider started small, and grew, and grew, and Donatello tightened his grip on the mug containing what was essentialy his brother's soul. He could allow him to go in, now. Just a little push.

But. What if something went wrong? What if Leo got lost in the way? What if he faded? He was stronger now, but still so fragile.

Raph smiled.

"Trust him, Donnie. He's got this." Raph avoided mentioning Mikey's concerns about the process, things he said only for the sake of confiding into someone else. It wouldn't do any good to make Donnie more anxious.

Donatello sighed and took his hand off the mug, using his ninpo to gently nudge Leo's into his new body. It rebelled, the little flame attached to his field. Scared. I don't want to be alone again, it said. Please. Donnie smiled. You won't. Trust me. He answered back. And after a few seconds of hesitation, the flame complied.

With the source in it, the body grows into the Leo he remembered. Or. Almost. He was healthy, because of course he was, he wasn't about to make a new body just for it to be shitty- but somehow smaller... thinner. Maybe he did something wrong- maybe, maybe Leo's soul didn't have enough energy to become himself-

But then he saw how Casey's eyes stared adoringly at the pod. Casey, who also had more scars and less pounds than he remembered. Donnie hadn't noticed much through his cameras- better yet, he had, but seeing it in person...

Suddently the alarm went off, signalling it was time to take his Lime-o-nardo Pie out of the oven. God, that was awful. Leo would absolutely love it.

With a gentleness only a biological body could muster, Raph lifted Nardo from his pod onto his arms, with a gaze so soft and proud Donnie thought he was about to cry.

They all hovered with warm smiles ready to welcome the leader in blue, barely containing the excitement in being all together again.

Except.

Nothing happened. Casey frowned and before Donnie could say or do anything, gently placed his fingers on his sensei's neck. He gasped.

"What? What happened?!" Raph asked barely below the yelling tone.

"His heartbeat." Casey replied in a whisper. "It's slow. Too slow." He looked at Donnie. "There's something wrong."

Raph quickly set Leo down after a quick nod from Donatello, who put on his goggles and started scanning to find whatever was his brother's ailment. A tense silence followed soon after.

"What... what is the problem?" Asked Casey. He was trembling into Raph's reassuring arms, never once looking away from his sensei. Donnie frowned.

"The good news is, nothing is physically wrong." He answered. "The bad news is, nothing's physically wrong."

There was a pregnant pause.

By Donnie's orders, Raph moved Leo to the place supposed to serve as his bedroom. Donnie tried every possible test he knew, from reflexes to blood test, to little slaps on his face, to begging. Leo's heartbeat was weak and frail. Like his ninpo had been.

This was all his fault. He should've given him more time, should've waited for Mikey to be healed enough to help, should've, should...

He punched Leo's chest, starling Raphael and Casey. They looked flabbergasted as he started doing compressions.

"I'm not letting you go, Nardo. Do you hear me? I'M NOT LETTING YOU GO!" He screamed. Death was not going to take him. He wouldn't let it happen.

So he kept on going, pressing. Forcing Leo's body to intake more air. Up, down, up, down.

Up, down.

But nothing changed in the five minutes it took for him to stop and realize he had been crying. Shit, he was crying in front of Casey. Fuck that, his brother was dying. No. No, no, he wasn't. Donnie could fix it, he could fix anything! There had to be another solution, something to keep him here, something Donnie could do. It didn't matter what, be it joke, scream, reveal his worst secrets, summon a demon with some dark ritual-

-wait. The memory ritual.

"That's it!" He yelled, and barked instructions around. Casey got started with Raph's assistance no questions asked. It was going to work. It had to.

Because he had no idea what to do if it didn't.

With the glowing lights and a final nod of confirmation, they started the ritual.

Casey tightened his grip on Leonardo's unresponsive hand. He needed him back. He was 16, he still needed his best friend, his mentor, his sensei.

He felt tears prickle in his eyes. This was all so unfair. Everything was. Why did he have to be strong? Why did he have to see the apocalypse happen? Twice? Why did he have to watch his family die? He was watching him die for the second- the third time!

He had felt so alone here, with strangers wearing the faces of his family. Strangers he loved so dearly but couldn't show or tell. Only, now they could be together again. It was just Leo, now.

"You can't do this to me, sensei. You can't." He breathed. Because he promised to be there to see Casey grow up. He promised to train him until he didn't need him anymore.

But he still did. Now, more than ever. Still needed him as his best friend, as his mentor, teacher, his sensei.

His dad.

"I miss you, dad."

It was cold. And surprisingly humid for a mind belonging to someone so heavily associated with fire. His feet touched the watery ground and he looked around.

There wasn't... anything here. Nothing useful, no sign of Leonardo's soul.

He started wandering, ocasionally calling for his brother.

"Leo? Nardo, are you here?" He walked around but saw nothing.

That is, until he looked down. Instead of a reflection, there he was. His twin. Mirrorring his actions and expressions like when they were tots.

"Leo! Leo, can you hear me?" He kneeled and touched the water. It was cool and shallow, but there was a force keeping him from getting in... or getting Leo out. He took notice of Leo mirrorring his expressions and punched the invisible wall. Nothing.

It was as if Leo didn't want to come with him.

"You aren't making things easy, Nardo."

The reflection- Leo just kept mimicking him. Donnie hissed. They had come too far for them to accept being only 3 now. He punched the water wall. They should never be less than 4. He needed. Punch. To get. Punch. His twin.

"Come on, come on, come on, come on!" Punch.

OUT!

The wall broke and without sparing a single second Donatello's hand searched and grabbed the collar of Leonardo's cape.

"Come here, you dumbass!" He pulled and finally - finally! - Leonardo in all his glowing and translucid and barely solid form came out of the water.

His eyes were angry and his face seemed hostile. If it was a mirror for Donnie's own features he didn't know, and it did NOT matter.

"You are coming with me and this is not up for discussion!"

He just snatched him completely from the water, glaring at its lifeless blue glow, barely registering the look of bewilderment and recognition that came across Leo's face.

"FUCK YOU, Death! I'm taking him!"

With his twin - his prize, his other half, his hope - in his arms, Donnie took impulse to leave that place. They were safe, it was going to be okay.

Leo's soul once again rebelled, reaching his armless nub towards the water. Home, his twin senses told him. Leo thought this was home.

"No, you idiot. I am taking you home."

Their eyes met. From the lifeless blue, the soul gripped his arm back and he tightened his hold. He knew that look. Hope. A ninja's greatest weapon, as cheesy as it sounds.

"Trust me, Nardo."

And with no need of words, he heard an answer.

"I do, Tello."

"I'll see you on the other side."

Donnie Darko - bedtime routine

"Okay Donnie, when I clap twice, you will be in the mindset of a child. This will help you tell me the honest truth without having to think about big, scary things." Donnie rolls his eyes at Dr. Thurman but his angsty glare is cut off when he hears two sharp claps. His mind feels foggy and his eyes are too bright for a moment, he feels his bottom lip quiver before everything comes back into focus. "Donald? How old are you?" He hears his therapist ask. He takes a moment to process the question before opening his mouth to speak, but no words comes out... "hmph" is all he can let out, making him whine in annoyance. "Can you show me on your fingers?" Donnie sniffles a bit before counting 3 fingers and holding them up. Dr. Thurman tuts and taps her pen on her clipboard inaudibly mumbling to herself. "Right. That's too young... this isn't going to work." She clasps her hands together once but Donnie suddenly moves towards her and reaches for her hand to stop her clapping the second time. "Donald?" Donnie let's out a soft, high pitched whine before taking his hand away from hers and toddling over to the bookshelf where he recognises a soft toy dog. He hugs the dog tightly to his chest and sits on the floor, his therapist joining him not long after. "Peas don't turn me back..." Donnie manages to get out in a soft, childlike whisper, Thurman simply nods and moves the toy dog's head to make it look like it's licking Donnie's chin - getting a sharp squeal and a giggle from him - the therapist was satisfied that this regression seemed to be helping the usually stiff and argumentative boy, letting him be a child and not a diagnosis for once.

Eventually the session had to conclude but Dr. Thurman could tell Darko wasn't quite ready to go back to being the mopey older brother he was used to being. She sent him off with a shopping bag with a colouring book, some felt tips, a couple of story books, and the toy dog inside. She instructed his sister - who was collecting him - to clap twice when Donnie requested her to. Donnie was quiet the whole ride home, trying to seem normal but also so confused and overwhelmed from this new mindset he was in, he just wanted to have his bedtime. So when he got home, that's exactly what he did, he ran upstairs on his hands and feet in some sort of attempt to get up there faster and when he reached his room he dived into his covers. They had never usually felt soft but now they were the perfect plush nest for Don. He peeled himself off his bed begrudgingly and picked out some cute button up style pyjamas with red and blue stripes on them and pulled them on. He stumbled downstairs and attempted to sneakily take some of the pasta his sister had cooked (he was really very obvious but she didn't care enough to call him out). Contently, Donnie jogged back up the stairs with a freshly stolen bowl of cheesy spaghetti and ate it whilst watching an old vhs tape of 'noddy'. <<remember this is set in 1988>> Once the boy had finished his pasta, he left his room to brush his teeth before bed, he looked away from the mirror to spit in the basin and when he looked back in it - there was Frank!

Donnie jumped and let out a little yelp, he felt his bottom lip curl and his breath hitched as he sobbed softly. "I'm so sorry friend... I didn't mean to scare you..." Donnie kept sobbing, he felt so vulnerable and was so unused to feeling small he couldn't help but cry. Frank, not knowing how to help, began running a bath for Don, stirring in a sizeable amount of bubble mixture after hearing him whimper. Whilst waiting for the little one's bath to be ready, Frank unsurely held his friend and picked him up slowly, rocking him back and forth. "Frankie..." Donnie sleepily mumbled. Frank goes still for a few seconds before gently going back to rocking him and soothing him. He gently places him in the bath, propping his head up on a towel incase baby gets tired. Frank scoops up the water with his fluffy gloves and washes the water over Darko's knees, before starting to massage the soap into Donnie's skin, cleaning the dirt and dried bløød off of his constantly scraped knees. After Frank could confidently say that his friend was clean, he moved on to washing Darko's dyed jett black hair, lapping the water up around his ears and coating the conditioner all through his hair, as he massaged it in - Donnie started to get sleepy and his eyes kept blinking open and closed to try to stop himself from falling asleep. The big rabbit hurried rinsing out the hair wash and picked Donnie up from underneath his arms, carrying him out of the bath before wrapping him in a plush, warm towel.

Frank brought Donnie back to his room, he layed the towel down on his bed pillow so his wet hair wouldn't soak it before gently putting his friend down on the bed. The rabbit slipped Darko's pyjamas back onto his now squeaky clean body, before gently pulling the duvet up and over him. Frank pulled a chair out to beside the bed to get ready to read Donnie one of the bedtime stories his therapist had packed for him, but Donnie shuffled about and whined softly before shyly reaching a hand out and grabbing one of the rabbits plastic ears like a curios baby. "Snuggles...?" He quietly requested, Frank went still again for a moment before double checking "You want cuddles from Frankie, little bunny?" Darko went tomato red before nodding enthusiastically *all whilst trying to hide his embarrassed blush* Frank quickly picked up his toy dog off of the floor and placed it in bed with his little one before hopping into bed with him as well. Not long after, baby Donnie had climbed onto the plush rabbit suit of his imaginary friend and was mumbling and snoring every now and then. Frank moved slowly to turn off the night light that was gently glowing and then clapped twice, not loud enough to wake up his little boy, but loud enough to end the hypnosis so that when Darko woke up he could be returned back to his normal state of mind. "Sleep easy, bun" and with that, Frank disappeared - not to bother Donnie that night.

一Holiday Comps・゜・。

Leo

Obviously he would be trying really hard. Because if anything suddenly becomes a competition all this turtle is concerned about is being numero uno.

“We should up the stakes a bit. April! You’ll be the judge, anddddd add in stuff to like throw us off our game. Make it harder! Oooh time limit of 40 minutes?”

He’s like adding shit and making things way more complicated than just a, “Oh cool gingerbread house contest? When everyone finishes the judges can decide who wins!”

No! Nope! Not happening. This will be the X-Games of Gingerbread Comps. Glory or death type shiz. So how does this process that he thrust upon the whole gang work? Well let me just say he has no problem abiding by the time set.

But his house looks messy as hell. He had a very hard time getting the roof to stop collapsing and may have looked over at Donnie to see how he got it done. Icing? Everywhere. He has no problem when one of the challenges was to “Switch hands! Use your least dominant,”

Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Though some could argue that it didn’t matter what hand he used, it would have been messy either way. If one challenge was to switch seats and work on a brother’s gingerbread house be ready for a slick sabotage. One that Mikey may not have realized until his own foundation started fumbling, why were the walls caving in?! And what happened to the tree gummies that had been set aside?!

Leo happened, that’s what. Though he is quick to deny and not know the nature of those issues at all. By the end April is video recording to also get Sunita and Cass’s vote. Including Splinter that’s four! One for each turtle if everyone is lucky.

The responses on Leo’s house are making him pace. He can’t stay still as he hears Cass laugh out loud, wondering why the hell his gingerbread man is on the roof. “This one is a bit all over the place but, it’s got personality!” Is the saving comment from Sunita who revives Leo’s confidence in the whole ordeal

In the end I think with the time frame Leo definitely got shit on his house, but it doesn’t look all that pretty, one vote at least!

He’s butt hurt about whoever wins if it’s not him and definitely calls out his brother’s own flaws in their own work. Petty. P-E- to the T-T-Y~!

Donnie

If given an unlimited amount of time, I do believe Donnie would be a real rival in this house decorating competition. First of all he’s good with his hands, precision baby, precision!!! He has the most practice with fiddling around with crazy small parts. Those little sprinkle balls aren’t falling to the floor due to his hands.

Now he may not get a lot of them on, because this turtle will take up a lot of time just getting the foundation of the house perfect. The walls have to be straight! The roof cannot be uneven! April may have to stop him from using outside sources or trying to break the whole model build and go for something more his style.

Once he finishes with that Donnie probably took about 10 minutes alone with it having to be perfect. Icing is up next and oml this may be his downfall. There is so much to secure, and you have to take into account the drying time! The challenges he has no problem with either but they eat up his time completely!!

If April decides to do a bit of trivia, winner gets to penalize whomever he chooses, Donnie is most likely winning those even if April chooses a fair category like Jupiter Jim or Lou Jitsu. Trivia is just Donnie’s jam, and the only way he can get Leo to stop for two minutes or be able to eat one of Raph’s essential pieces like a peppermint decor!

Donnie’s build would be the cleanest, icing looking beautiful! Like touched of snow on the house! But he would hardly have any decorations due to sheer lack of time. He’d have a vote for sure but would get comments like, “It looks pretty simple!” or “This one doesn’t have a doorknob!”

“If I had more time,” would be his immediate come back. Puffing up and feeling defensive because this competition is definitely in his wheelhouse, but Leo of course had to make it to where a genius couldn’t thrive under such terse conditions. Hmph!

I’m sure April’s vote would be for Donnie

Mikey

He’s an artist, artists thrive in silly little gingerbread house competitions. I mean come on he’s the one who has the most creative ideas. Probably the most aesthetically pleasing as well!

But I fear Mikey will lack in the actual house building part. Which is literally just four slabs of gingerbread and the two more for the roof. He’d struggle to get it to stand. He’d struggle to get it to stay still. “Why does it keep MOVING?!” He’d be yelling out his frustration for sure

Even more so when he finally gets everything to stay in place only for one of the challenges to be switch houses. Leo getting his house and while Mikey doesn’t pay too much attention to what Leo is doing, when he gets his gingerbread house back it’s suddenly collapsing again?! He thought he had solved that problem! ACK! “LEO!!!” But no amount of calling his older brother out would change the fact that his house still isn’t put together

When…If he does get it together in time, you best believe he’s rushing to finally get to his favorite part! The decorations! He’s definitely eaten a couple of things without noticing it happening himself. It’s not exactly good candy, but candy is candy!

I think Splinter would vote for Mikey’s even if the house is crumbling, it’s a pretty crumbling house, out of all the brothers I think Mikey would win in a contest that wasn’t rigged by Leo!

Raph

I’m sorry, but he’d eat like half his materials. HE WOULD! So there wouldn’t be a house, maybe a shack if he’s lucky.

And on top of his appetite getting the best of him, everything is pretty darn small, and his fingers are chunky. This activity is just really not made for him but he’s doing his best, okay? His best with what he has left LOL

The hardest part would be decorating since the candy would be the smallest pieces to get on. He’d have icing everywhere, mostly on his fingers to which he would be licking clean, losing more material!!!

“Raph are you even trying???” Leo would goad, feeling that much better about himself and his standing even though he’s not doing much better as we have seen! Raph doesn’t let Leo get to him, he’s happy to just be doing something with the fam! And eating!

Rise/2012 crossover where Leon & Donnie get transported to the 2012 dimension (thanks Donnie) & have to survive there for a bit until they can get back home.

Donnie obviously has to focus on the actual "getting home" bit, so it's up to Leon assure the whole "survival" thing.

At first he's just doing odd-jobs under the table thanks to the use of a cloaking broach he nicked off of Big Mama a while back, but eventually he stumbles upon a movie shoot for the "Chris Bradford" action movie franchise.

It isn't going particularly well, since the look-alike the director hired in place of the mysteriously vanished Bradford just isn't up to snuff martial arts-wise. In the end, the look-alike storms off set after declaring his intent to quit which sends the crew into a panic.

Leon, ever hankering for his 5 minutes of fame, is quick to introduce himself & assure his experience as a martial artist (slightly exaggerated, but he's been mimicking his dad's movies for years, if there's anything he knows how to do, it's how to make his moves look good for the camera).

The director only really gives him a chance out of desperation, but once he sees Leon's demonstrations on film, he's instantly hooked.

The movie changes from being about "Chris Bradford" to being about his "disciple" though the movie itself is really only using that as a loose tie-in to draw a bigger crowd.

Leon brags to Donnie about his new-found stardom, but he's not actually expecting anything to come from it.

In fact, he & Donnie only stay in the dimension long enough for him to finish filming before he bids the case & crew adieu.

So he completely missed the fact that it's an INSTANT SMASH-HIT

The Director & crew (who were NOT expecting this, the just wanted to milk what they could from a dying movie franchise) are desperate to find their new golden goose, the gossip rags are fighting for information about this mysterious up-and-coming star...

and the original, very much still alive Chris Bradford (currently known has Rahzar)?

Yeah, he is NOT happy about someone stealing his legacy out from under him.

and he's out for blood.

(A/N: I had to transition between Leo and Donnie's perspectives multiple times, so hopefully it's clear enough. If not, feel free to ask for clarification!)

"Wh- Leo, I know that's you. Stop!"

Donnie sighed, shaking his head in annoyance as he picked up his wrench from the ground again. All day, Leo had been using his portals to pester him, making one behind him and doing anything to get his attention, then quickly closing it before he could even turn around.

"Uh, Dee, you okay?" Mikey leaned in the doorway of his lab, the arches of his mask furrowed as he examined his brother. Donnie looked up. "Yes, Angelo. I'm fine. Leo's just bothering me." A quizzical look formed on the younger's face. "I.. thought Leo was in his room..?"

Donnie put his wrench down once more, wiping his hands with a rag on the floor. He had been working on the Turtle Tank, trying to repair part of the engine after an encounter with Meat Sweats. "He is." When Mikey didn't look any less confused, the scientist huffed.

"He's been using his portals to bug me. I don't know what his problem is." The orange themed turtle straightened up at the clarification, and glanced around the lab for any of the portals, though the blue glow was nowhere to be seen for the moment.

"Oh. Want me to go tell him to stop or something?"

"No, that's okay, I can handle him on my own. Even if you did, I don't think he'd pay you much mind."

Mikey shrugged. "Okay then. Anyways, I came in here to tell you I'm gonna start dinner soon. I'll come get you when it's ready!" He chirped and turned to leave after receiving a thumbs up, his older brother rolling back underneath the Turtle Tank and beginning to tinker with it once more.

A solid hour went by, and Donnie had gone undisturbed, the quiet clanging of metal relaxing him as he let his guard down.

Eventually, he had finished working on the engine, rubbing his eyes as they struggled to adjust to the light in his room after hours of being under a vehicle in his tech-filled lab.

The softshell stretched his arms out, and grabbed his phone off of its charger, displaying a satisfying 100% as it turned on. Donnie flopped onto his bed and began scrolling, completely forgetting about his twin's shenanigans.

That is, until a familiar light clashed with the soft purple of his room, and a hand slowly crept out of the portal, snatching his phone right out of his hands, making him startle.

"Gah! Leo, are you serious? Give that back!" He wasn't sure if his brother could hear him through the portal, though he supposed he couldn't, as the hand quickly retracted, then reappeared empty as it reached for his head, grabbing at his goggles.

Leo, in his own room, had been feeling antsy without any big missions, and had taken to annoying his favorite purple-themed brother in the whole world. His puns and jokes usually got at least a groan out of him, maybe even a quiet snicker if he was lucky, but recently, his twin had been ignoring them all together, opting to roll his eyes without any fun reactions. So, the sword-wielding teen had decided to up his game.

One thing that was bound to annoy Donnie was poking at him and stealing his things, so naturally, the two had been the center of Leo's attention all day. He had misplaced tools, jabbed his brother's arm, and even set off an alarm once or twice! Sure, he couldn't see his reactions directly, but the frustrated yells from across the lair had been worth it.

When the genius had retreated to his bedroom, the slider couldn't help but bother him some more, successfully grabbing his phone and tossing it onto a pillow on his side of the portal. He could've stopped there, but mischief was calling his name, and so were the multicolored glasses sitting atop his twin's head.

'Oh the AUDACITY of this guy!'

The softshell growled in annoyance, failing to retrieve his precious headwear as Leo's hand merely dodged his attempts. After a few more tries, Donnie had had enough. He grabbed Leo's wrist, snatching his goggles back swiftly before securing the limb in place, tapping at his wrist with his free hand, and summoned two metallic arms from the sides of his artificial shell. The robotic arms clamped onto his twin's, and effectively held it in place as Donnie slipped his hand into the bright portal. He waved it around for a moment, before knocking into the side of the slider's plastron.

Bingo.

He then shot his arm up, and rammed his fingers into where he guessed was the turtle's armpit, and based on the squeal that sounded from a couple rooms over, Donnie knew he guessed right. A hand slapped at his own and tried pushing him away, but impatience drove the olive-skinned turtle to only dig harder into the soft skin, wiggling his fingers quickly into it.

Leo, as smug as he was before, immediately regretted his want for entertainment the moment he couldn't pull his arm back into his room, and was filled with giddy panic at the three-fingered hand that had began drilling into his underarm.

"AH! HahaHAHAH! HAH! WAHAhaihit noho!"

The blue-themed teen gasped at the unexpected energy jolting through him, and almost threw himself off of his bed in surprise. With his arm being suspended by cold metal, he could only push at the offending hand and curl up as best he could.

Leo drummed his feet on his mattress, and arched up when Donnie pressed his fingers into the bridge of his shell, then moved down to scratch at the edge of his carapace. The slider bit his lip, trying to fight the giggles pushing their way out of his throat.

"GHK!- Pffft- Nhehehe! Dohohonnie, stAHAP!" His pleas went answered, the softshell's hand not budging in the slightest. Leo twisted, rolling as much as he could with his left arm held in place, his shell facing the portal as he searched for his brother's phone, knowing Donnie would probably stop if he just gave it back.

His stomach sunk when he saw that in his struggle he had thrown it to the floor, and couldn't reach it to put an end to the electric sensation running through his side.

"Shihihit."

Leo rolled onto his back again, snorting when his brother reached his arm deeper into the portal to tickle his belly, laughter shooting out of him as he struggled to take a proper breath.

"SNRK- DOHonnie, hahah! PleheHEAse!" The blue-themed turtle screwed his eyes shut, focusing on trying to pull his arm out of the grip it was in. He tried to think of a way to get himself out of this mess, peeking an eye open to see his sword that was lying on his bed, still glowing from use. However, he very quickly dismissed the idea of closing the portal, as even if he managed to focus enough to do that, he didn't want to portal-chop his arm. Okay, he needed a new plan.

The opening to his brother's room was pretty small, so he probably couldn't stick his head through and tell Donnie to stop, both of their limbs barely having enough room to move as is, so that wasn't an option. Maybe if he could reach the phone with his foot?..

Leo slid his right leg off his bed, his twin having to move back to his armpit when his belly pulled out of reach, forcing a squeak from his mouth. He slid his foot around on the floor, searching for the phone, and accidentally scooted it farther away.

"DahaHANG IHIT! NohoHOho!" The teen cursed himself for his clumsiness, and was just about to try again when a voice sounded from his doorway.

"Uh.. Leo? You okay?"

Raph has been walking by, glancing into his little sibling's room to check on him, and was surprised to see Leo practically hanging off his bed, a crazy expression on his red face as he cackled. "RAHAPH! Rahahaphie SNRK- plEHEHEASE! HahaND MEHE THehe phOHONE!"

Raph entered the room, eyes following the slider's finger to see a purple phone on the ground a good distance from where Leo was.. trying to get it. He picked it up, and saw Leo's arm almost completely through one of his portals, with a hand scratching underneath it.

He held it up for the slider to see. "What's Don's phone doin' in here?" The younger fought with the hand, that Raph soon realized to be Donnie's, for a moment, before reaching for the device. "GIHIVE IT TO MEHEHE! Plehease Rahaph! SNRK-" The snapping turtle shrugged, and handed it to him, fighting the urge to wait a bit just to mess with him.

Leo quickly snatched it from his older brother, and chucked it into the portal. The hand paused for a moment, then retracted. The sword-user ripped his arm from the metal grip as soon as it was loosened, and pressed it to his side, curling up and gasping for air.

"Wait.. Raph's confused. Why was Donnie ticklin' you?" The red-themed turtle's brow furrowed, and he sat next to his brother and patted his shell, helping him calm down from his giggle-high. "Hehe- wahanted his phohone back.. heheh- that I mahay or may nohot have taken.."

Raph chuckled, shaking his head fondly at his siblings's shenanigans. He tweaked Leo's side, to which the smaller giggled and grabbed onto his hand for support, pulling his legs up to his chest for further protection. "Relax, Raph's not gonna getcha.."

The slider dropped his legs back down, only to raise them back up as a pillow was chucked at his face.

"Next time don't steal my things, and I won't have to make you suffer, 'Nardo." Donnie deadpanned at the doorway, Leo sticking out his tongue, throwing the pillow back at him, which fell short and landed on the ground. The scientist stuck his tongue out as well before walking off again, footsteps patting down the hall.

"No promises, Dee."

Donnie is going around his lab, checking on works in progress, re-reading test results for past projects he put to the side, and adding some new pictures and notes onto his Multiverse Board.

They didn't feel like they wanted to revisit an old project, but their curiosity was really pushing to see what possible changes could happen if he just poked through to change even just a few variables. But he remembered why he shelved that particular project, and instead adjusted it.

He figured if he couldn't open a way to a different dimension, he could at least make it so that only other versions of their brothers and himself could find their broadcasts and VODs. They haven't found proof of this adjustment working just yet, but then again he was purposefully making sure they couldn't directly come to their dimension. So messages might also be getting caught in that filter.

They stop infront of a set of shelves that have multiple Comic Books, Novels, DVD/Blu-ray, games, and some toys of their alternate selves. They started collecting these because it was the "safer way" to have a form of contact from the different dimensions, plus it made it much easier to watch their whole story and not just see random glimpses that were vastly lacking in context.

Donnie pulls out his custom jailbroken Switch, specially modified to get games from other dimensions, to play through one of the games based on one of their variants. They still had trouble with getting some of the games, but they're sure it's just a 'timing issue' with release dates. Some of these games were purposefully chosen for their multiplayer functions.

They had opened a theoretical 'Multiverse Server' and would leave these online games as an open join, or random drop in, from this server. It was technically the safest way from them to have multiplayer games without some random crazy trying to drop in. But there wasn't any new activity or added members since Donnie had added his families accounts to it.

Donnie had shared the games with their brothers, and they agreed to play a few of them on stream for the hell of it. Maybe if only to cause some chaos and confusion for the audience. The only times they let the audience join a game is through the Patreon Servers, or Jack Box games, and even then it's with limited interactions.

Though Donnie kept this MVS open, just incase one of his counterparts wanted to have some form of contact to their dimension. Even if it's mostly through the chat systems of some random online games.

Donnie tried to keep their mind from wandering while trying to play through one of the games about one of their variants. They were enjoying the game despite the fact that they were slowly running out of possible upgrades without beating the big boss. He had gotten so close that one time, but alas he forgot the trope of there's a second stage that's harder than the first.

They still keep an ear out for any notifications that might come in while he tries to ignore the urge to potentially RIP apart reality, just to meet alternate versions of themselves.

Donnie totally didn't chose a very specific notification sound just incase someone did try to contact them.

These is definitely not a small pile of broken controllers from him, in an uncharacteristic moment, throwing a controller at the wall in rage, because he thought a notification was from a different dimension, and not his father asking for help fixing the projector again.

This is at least partially why he set himself up with multiple things to do, because if he didn't need to do so much, they'd be sitting here all day just waiting for the slight possibility of contact...

Maybe he should check in on whoever's streaming, and see if they wouldn't mind them joining the stream...

Yeah, that would be a much better distraction...

Once he finished this run through in the rouge like game, and double checked that everything was still running at max proficiently!

hope yall don’t mind me sharing some screenshots of the lair that i made in the sims 😳 the third floor is still not completely finished, but i really like what i’ve got so far :)

first floor! it's shaped like a turtle 🥺 the hallway leads to a set of ladders that connects every floor

donnie's room; mikey was chillin on the bed when i opened the game and i just had to leave him there for the photo op 🥺🧡 had to add a lot more decorations to it so it didn't look like a sad little depression chamber lol

leo's room; had to keep from gagging as i made it...you can almost smell the gym musk 🤢🤢 (im kidding 😭 ....mostly). also the lighting is sposed to be red, but i kept getting his and raph's rooms mixed up while playing so i color-coded all of them instead :)

best boy mikey's room!!! it looks like a tornado came through it and we love that for him 🧡 unfortunately could not find a hammock bed, but there was a very cute bunk bed with the perfect colors for him ehehe

raph's room; could not find a whole lot of refs for it in the show?? had to improvise basically half of it. and can you believe this game doesn't have a weight lifting bench???

second floor! ignore the fucked up little hallway, i just wanted to keep the layout (relatively) accurate while still making the map playable 😭 the dark room was the gnome room, but i might have sold all of the gnomes 🤔

arcade; the flooring is inaccurate, but they added it in the new update and it just looked so fun

kitchen; one of my favorites! i wish i had this many string lights in my house irl..

splinter's room (it's honestly so barren in the show, i had to improvise a lot 😭)

third floor....is very much unfinished so i won't share as many screenshots 😭

projector room; it's super barren, i still need to decorate the walls and i've just been dumping random hobby-related furniture in here, but i'm still sharing cuz i'm really happy i was able to get the colors, lighting, and floor as close as i did 😊 (SO lucky i found those rugs lol)

aaaaand everybody's least favorite bathroom! from the piebald episode lol. it's so goddamn ugly, but tragically it's the only finished room on this floor 😔

donnie's lab and the garage are hardly accurate to the show (afaik this game does not have a giant tank, or even cars, to just park inside your sims' house), so i've mostly been using them to dump hobby/needs-related furniture like donnie's science stuff and kitchen appliances. i'll get to finishing them eventually 😭

i'm happy with how it's turned out so far, though! their whole house is so colorful and full of personality and it's been super fun to both make and play on in this game 🥺

More or less what happens in the sick arc, I ended up hating the first one and restarting but then never finished sooo yeah

Leo is cold. Cold and all floppy like a spaghetti noodle. He rolled over, hands flapping all over to try and find the blanket. But he's already wrapped up in one! And his long-sleeve shirt, too! 

Leo squirms a little more before opening his eyes, blinking hard at the sudden light. It's too bright. And very, very purple. 

Donnie's room. No. Big Donnie's lab. It's all blinky lights and big dark screens that remind of him a evil genius. 

Leo sits up and rubs at his eyes, trying to get all the blurries out. He blinks real hard and looks around. Yep, it's Cl-Big Donnie's lab. Big Donnie. 

Right, he was s'posed to be keepin' a eye on him!! Leo looks around, but Big Clone Donnie isn't anywhere!! 

" He was s'posed to be under my guard!!" He huffed, grabbing Lion-y and stomping towards the door. He was still cold. Even colder now that he wasn't under the blanket, but he was on guard duty!! He had to make sure Donnie didn't do anything evil! 

Leo opened the door and heard laughing, aaaaaalll the way far away. He tried to remember where Micheal said everything was. Raphie's room was…was down there, and then Michael's room was…there. But they weren't in the rooms. 

Ugh, Leo's head felt too swimmy to remember. He sighed, walking towards where he heard all the laughing. He followed some big stairs and then went towards where the light was. This looked really familiar! 

It was probably the kitchen!

 'Cause he had been there lots and lots of times already, so he remembered where it was!

Leo squeezed Lion-y tight to his chest and started running, maybe they were back to normal! Maybe everyone was small again! Or Dad was home! 

"I'M AWAKE!" He exploded into the kitchen! Waving his arms in case they couldn't see him. 

But everybody was all the same. Raphie was still big like a skyskater, Clone Donnie was still wearing his scary goggles, and Micheal was still…Micheal. Too big for a little baby brother. 

Leo frowned, but made sure to hide his sad when Casey said good morning to him.  

They were friends now, obviously! 

" Morning Leo, you want some breakfast?" Casey got up and held out his hand. Leo took it and let Casey take him to the table and help him onto a chair. Even though he could do it himself, they were friends so it was okay. 

Casey got a funny look on his face when he sat back down, but he just started eating his pancakes! 

" Micheal, can I have…can I have syrup?" He asked, setting Lion-y in the empty chair next to him, " pretty please with cherries on top?" 

Micheal smiled at him real big and sat a plate right in front of him! With three big, giant pancakes on top! 

It was a lot, but Leo was a good eater! He could eat it all! 

" 'course you can, " Micheal poured a whole bunch of syrup on top, then handed Leo a fork, " Eat up, Leo. You deserve a treat after last night " 

Leo smiled really big at that, grabbing his fork and poking it into the pancake on top. But then Raphie stopped him and took the fork and the plate away. 

" hold on, Lee, let Raphie cut it up for you " 

Leo pouted at that, but let him cut up the pancake. His mouth was pretty small anyway, so smaller pieces would fit better. and then he could eat even faster! 

Leo watched,

Leo opens the door and walks down the hallway, it's really really quiet. He is still really, really cold. But not sleepy like he usually is when he's cold. It was a turtle thing, Donnie told him one time. 

He wasn't sleepy, but he wanted to lay down really bad. His legs hurt from walking, even though he only walked a little. And his arms hurt from holding Lion-y, but he wasn't even that heavy. His head hurt too, but the lights were all bright and stuff, and he probably had too much stuff in his head. 

Leo sniffed, wiping at his face to try and get his nose to work. It didn't work that good, though, so he took a big breath in. It was crunchy sounding, like when Dad did one of his big sneezes and then had a stuffed up nose for the rest of the day. 

That was okay, Leo could still be on guard duty with a stuffed up nose. 

He kept walking and walking til he found Raph's big giant door, but it was closed. He set Lion-y on the floor really careful, but his arms hurt too bad to open the door. Leo huffed, sitting on the ground and banging on the door two times. He was too tired to do it anymore. He would just have to wait til Big Raphie opened the door by himself! 

But then the door opened! And Big Raphie was already in there. He had a funny look on his face.

Which brings us to Page 7. Donnie is yelling at him. Telling him his flaws that Leo has had since forever. Trying to hold back even more anger than what he is already showing because It’s Leo. He just came back from dying alone in the apocalypse.

Notice in the first panel, the lines in the text bubbles are quite wobbly. This gives us the idea that not only is Donnie yelling, but he’s also showing quite a lot of emotion already. Something that we usually don’t see him doing around others. Maybe he’s even holding back tears.

In the last panel we see tears forming in Leo’s eyes as Donnie is finishing his ramble. He’s surprised to see this emotion from his twin but is showing that he’s listening. Even if his eyes show a hollowness to them (although looking back, its seems this is pretty consistent in Leo’s eyes. Could be me looking to much into it.)

Page 8. “Do you have any idea… how close you were to have nothing left to save?” Harsh, Donnie, harsh. But true.

While his twin was saying this, the frown Leo has turns into a smile. Note that this is the first smile we see from Leo in his new body.

I really like how Cass has shown a large portion of Leo in the first panel too, showing off the fact that yes, he has gone through so much pain and trauma, yet he is still whole. Because of his family saving him in the end. Scars are there, but the wounds (physical) have healed.

We see that he has more of a hopeful expression now.

Donnie asks him if he’s still listening, but Leo is probably more focused on the fact that his call for Donnie to yell at him (from after him being bitten by krang dog) has been finally answered.

Page 9, Leo finally speaks. First thing he says is his twin’s name, like a question. Like he can’t even believe it. There are tears still in his eyes, he’s barely able to hold back his emotions as he lets Donnie continue to talk.

The second panel is so cute though,, Leo’s big smile as he waits for Donnie.

“At least you’re talking.” This must have been a worry for Donnie. I would guess that he has been calculating a lot of risks to bringing back Leo and still has doubts. He continues to take notes in the third panel, when realizing that Leo isn’t immediately acting like his old self, thinking that there is more work to be done to make his twin happy.

But that’s where Leo stops him. As soon as Leo grabs him, Donnie stops what he’s doing. Usually Donnie isn’t the biggest fan of someone getting in the way of his research, but it’s Leo who is reaching out to him. He gives his full attention and puts away the notes.

This is also making me wonder if Donnie was guessing that Leo didn’t want to show so much emotion/talk about what has happened. So he decided to go on to making sure that Leo is okay as quickly as possible.

Page 10 shows a lot of emotions from Leo. Notice that when Leo reaches out this time, he is able to make contact with Donnie and pull his hand towards himself in the first panel. His expressions shows such disbelief and amazement of the fact that he can feel Donnie again.

In the second panel, we finally see those tears starting to fall. He shows so much hope here, his eyes even look fuller (there are bolder, multiple lines), and he perks up again.

But then, in the third and fourth panel, we see that doubt start to set in. Because he’s learned that in the apocalypse, having this sort of hope will make you arrogant, and an easy target for the Krang. This doubt has most likely kept Leo and many other people sane and alive because the range of emotions between being hopeful and being crushed by the results is so large.

In the fourth panel, we see how his mind is trying to crush him, that worry and sort of fear overwhelming him making the tears fall from his face.

Page 11. Theres a moment of silence as Donnie takes a moment to realize the emotions Leo might be going through. In the second panel we see the “twin senses” act up. And he must’ve finally gotten the idea that Leo needs a lot of comfort right now.

Page 12, Donnie continues to go right to the facts.

Safe. The krang are gone. Imagine hearing that after two decades of fighting a losing battle with the aliens. To suddenly hear that they’re no more.

Donnie has never been the best at comforting, and for a moment in the second panel, im pretty sure he tries to say that.

But instead, in the third panel, he raises his arms up for a hug. Because he knows for a fact that Leo needs some comfort right now.

Page 13, Donnie doesn’t wait for Leo’s self doubt to set in again.

He goes right for the hug, surprising Leo as he slowly goes to hug Donnie back,

As if still fearing that things still aren’t real to him.

We see that Leo’s twin senses act up, and that’s the moment where he starts to really realize that yes this is real. Yes, his twin is hugging him (which by the way, is so rare of him especially in the apocalypse).

The progression of Leo’s expression in these three panels is just,,, so good though. We see those emotional gates start to open, Leo starting to lose his hold.

And yet Donnie still holds onto him.

Page 14. Leo’s emotions finally show. The fear, pain, exhaustion, doubt, everything comes out at once. And it’s so strong that it pushes them both onto the bed.

Donnie lets him cry for as long as he needs here. He holds on and becomes the sort of anchor Leo has been seeking for so long (Leo probably not even knowing how badly he needed this cry). I would guess that this is one of the first times Donnie has seen Leo freely sob in a long, long time. Yet he smiles as he feels Leo cling to him, trusting him enough to let his emotions go. The fact that Leo finally allows himself to share his grief, frustrations, anger, fears, etc. With someone is the first step in the healing journey that cass may show us.

And in the last panel, I think Donnie is even rubbing Leo’s shell in a way of comfort.

Page 15, we see that Donnie is still holding onto Leo just as strongly even after the tears start to stop.

And then comes the joke. Because Leo has just been comforted by Donnie for who knows how long. His voice is probably shaky and raw from the crying, but he’s insistent on going through with the joke. And at least giving back some sort of comfort to his brother.

At the moment though, Donnie has no clue what’s going on. He’s not expecting Leo to crack a joke.

In page 16, we see the result of the joke surprises Donnie into a laugh.

Also notice how tightly Leo is holding onto Donnie’s tank top in panel one oh my god. He probably doesn’t want Donnie to pull away from him just yet because he’s expecting Donnie to criticize him on the joke.

Instead Donnie lets himself relax against Leo as he tries to contain the laughter.

HOWEVERRRRRRR there are a lot of awesome things about it i really like….. i think one thing i like the most about this iteration (besides the very obvious obsession about sunset duo) is THE VOICEACTING. in a tmnt voiceacting teirlist i would put almost every rise character in s tier and yet STILL, despite the fact i put donnie in b, 2012 IS MY FAVOURITE VOICE ACTED SERIES. the original ask includes the giant navy battleship line and. yeah. sean astin’s delivery makes it a kajillion times funnier to me. IDK MAN THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT SPLINTER’S VOICE THAT IS SO SATISFYING TO ME. AND THE WAY SHINIGAMI LAUGHS???????????????? HRGHHHHH

also a big fan of the dynamics between the turtles…… the absolute brothers of all time. sobs (again it’s very obvious which duo is my favourite hfhdbsjbsdj)

also this might be a slightlyyyy controversial take but mikey’s adhd is written really really REALLY well in my opinion. like ok donnie said he hasn’t matured since age six and infantilisation is a big problem with neurodivergent people HOWEVER. a big part of mikey’s character is that he doesn’t like being underestimated and wants to prove he is capable but also. as a person with adhd. YEAH I TOO FEEL LIKE THE PERSON IN MY BRAIN IS A SMALL CHILD. the reason i peaked in primary school is because, back then, i was only slightly less mature than my peers. now as i’m in secondary school i realise i am like a TWO YEAR OLD compared to these people. when i was in s1 i would call myself the twelve year old toddler because that was essentially how mature i felt i was. SO THE STRUGGLE IS REAL. maybe there are times he feels slightly stereotypical but hey, everyone has their stereotype moments, right??? (as cliche as it is i feel like everyone has had a “hey, look, squirrel!” moment in their life). yeah i just relate to 2012 mikey on a spiritual level. like every time he’s on screen he does something and i think WOW. that is LITERALLY me (which is why i’m surprised that one poll i have more people think i’m like sonic than mikey?? but i’m not complaining, sonic is super cool)

the 3d animation is cool (the increase in skill is very obvious as you progress further through the series) and the fight scenes are just. MWAH. SO satisfying.

also SOME of the romance is pretty ok! raph and mona lisa are great. also arguably raph and casey (but we’re not ready for that conversation i think).

Ok I will say oddly enough I’ve read the comics for 2012. Weird, but I pirated found them and enjoyed reading them, they were fun.

I have watched a few episodes - I did like the speed demon episode (I love the dynamic of 2012 donnie and Casey mirroring the 90s movies even down the name insulting scene where they are going through the alphabet) and I like parasitica a lot. I have watched others like journey to centre of Mikey’s mind, Buried Secrets, and the usagi episodes, and also the final episodes of the Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (? I cannot remember the name, but the one with the insect guy as the villain who’s name I can’t spell and can’t be bothered to Google lol), that one where Donnie becomes dumb, the vampire ones, but that’s it.

What puts me off is the romance and the (in my opinion) partial butchered character Donnie has due to it. He’s genuinely creepy and it makes watching it uncomfortable and wildly out of character compared to what I’m used to. I’ve never been a fan of romance, and I expect ally despise the whole “main character has a crush on someone else but is so nerdy they don’t know how to approach them” trope. The whole love triangle and the poorly written “love at first sight” which most the romances in the show are just put me off completely. I genuinely have tried other episodes but I cringe every time the Donnie/April romance happens. It’s a shame because when they let Donnie move on from April or not be simping after her I really like his slightly sarcastic, blunt yet sensitive nature.

I’ve heard they kind of throw away the romance at season 3 but it’s having to watch this until then tbh. Maybe one day I will give it a go if people really say it’s worth the suffering of my least favourite trope. You seem to like it a lot so maybe :)

Maddy’s Top Five Favorite TMNT Episodes from Every Series!

Welcome to my ranking list! My first of many, hopefully! I even spiced things up and made it all fancy with the different font! 😂 god I’m getting old.

A while ago I made a PowerPoint presentation for fun about the history of the TMNT and the franchise. From that point it led to me gaining a spot in a YouTube video series discussing the movies leading up to the premier of Mutant Mayhem, and it’s been one of the best things to happen to me despite the terrible stuff I’ve gone through.

TMNT really saved me at the lowest point of my life in the winter of 2022. It inspired me to go back to Tumblr. I met and befriended incredibly talented people in this fandom. And I’ve found a reason to be happy again because of it. The pain of losing my big sister still aches, and I miss her more each passing day, but I know she’d tell me to get off my ass and do what made me happy.

So for my birthday this weekend, I’ll share this with you guys to celebrate something that brought me joy through all this pain. ❤️‍🩹

Lemme explain the criteria for this real fast;

The episode had to have come from a current/ up to date show. It has to be fully completed!

The episodes have to catch my interest and the plot needs to be gripping! The angstier the better!

Any of the series episodes are candidates for a win! Except for certain ones that I’d rather not watch 🤣

SPOILERS BEWARE! Cuz… well, I dunno who’s finished the shows and I don’t wanna ruin the surprise for others!

Onto the list proper! Starting with the series that started it all: 1987!

The Maltese Hamster ( Season 3 Ep. 4 ) An excellent Donatello solo episode that takes the tone of a detective noir movie, but keeping the fun vibe of the show! Donnie gets to take center stage for once, April gets to use a laser gun, and the shift in tone sets the mood really well! It’s downright harrowing to watch a building collapse on Donnie and see him limping away from the scene in agony, passing out at Irma’s feet, trying to save his brothers despite the odds. Donnie’s my favorite turtle for a reason!

Raphael Meets His Match ( Season 4 Ep. 17 ) The first appearance of Mona Lisa, and I can see why the fans adore this ship so much! The chemistry between Mona and Raph throughout this one episode is really telling of how impactful one character can be to a franchise! Mona is really fun! She’s not just a token ‘girl character’ trope or an archetype, she can handle herself and kick ass alongside the turtles, plus she and Raph have some pretty witty banter together!

Beware The Lotus ( Season 3 Ep. 28 ) The introduction of Lotus Blossom! It’s speculated that the inspiration for Karai came from Lotus! Lotus and Leo had great chemistry together, it's a shame we only got two episodes to spend with her. She really is an interesting character with loads of story potential about finding your place in the world, discovering who you are, changing your destiny to make it what you want. This is me basically saying I am now part of the Lotus Blossom Fan Club.

Cowabunga, Shredhead! ( Season 3 Ep. 18 ) This is one of the fan favorite episodes, and after I watched it for the first time I could not stop laughing. James Avery does his best Mikey impression while playing the over the top Shredder, and everyone just accepts it??? It’s downright genius! The meme material from this one is plentiful!

Michelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko ( Season 5 Ep. 4 ) The introduction of Mondo himself, and he’s got a really cool design! On first viewing I was pleasantly surprised by his unique color scheme and his character! He’s a bad guy that gets a redemption arc by the end of the episode! I was rooting for him the whole time! It was this debut that made me adore Mondo, and he’s since become my favorite mutant character of the franchise!

Honorable Mentions are Donatello’s Duplicate and Turtlemaniac!

Next up is a controversial one, but I gotta be honest… ‘03 isn’t my favorite series for a lot of reasons, but I will admit! When this series had fantastic episodes, they were AMAZING. So I gotta give credit when due and give kudos to these wins!

The Shredder Strikes Back Parts One and Two ( Season 1 Episodes 17-18 ) Nothing really tops how good this show was in the first season, and these episodes take the comic storyline of Leo’s beatdown and bring it to life masterfully. For Leo’s segments of part one it’s spent mostly with no dialogue— the animation and music carrying how serious the scene is as Leo has to fight for his life against the Foot and how desperate he becomes as he grows weaker and weaker. The second episode is non-stop action as the rest of the turtles, Splinter, April and Casey have to fend off the Foot and Shredder as they fight for their lives in the antique shop. This is one of Michael Sinterniklass’s BEST performances as Leo in these episodes. The stakes are higher than ever before, the animation is gorgeous, and everyone gives it their all for this epic mid-season finale.

Same As It Never Was ( Season 3 Ep. 21 ) This is the episode I would tell people to watch if they think TMNT is just kiddie trash.

Bad Blood ( Season 6 Ep. 12 ) Probably the Fast Forward concept I wish got expanded on instead of giving it two standalone stories and dropping it entirely. It’s a cool idea that I wish got touched upon more often because, yeah, what would evil clones of the turtles look like? What kind of abilities could they have? There’s infinite possibilities! I could live without the new catchphrase ‘It's Ninja Time’ though. While Fast Forward is flawed, this episode was the one I thoroughly liked!

Insane in the Membrane ( Season 4 Ep. 19 ) The infamously banned episode, and all I have to say about it is two words. Holy. Shit.

The Real World Part One ( Season 3 Ep. 22 ) Any team-up with Usagi Yojimbo is a good one, and this was such a delight! It’s loosely based on one of the Usagi stories from the comics, and I loved how badass they made both Usagi and Tomoe! Leo and Usagi have great chemistry as always, and you can tell they have a strong bond with one another as warriors! Or boyfriends depending on how you interpret their relationship but honestly I totally see where everyone is coming from, THESE TWO ARE ADORABLE DORKS.

Next up is my all-time favorite incarnation of the franchise, 2012!! I have A LOT to say about so many of the episodes but alas, I could only choose five to discuss. One day… one day I shall make a thesis about it 🤣 for now however, here’s my top five faves from this series!

The Yojimbo Trilogy ( Season 5 Episodes 7-9 ) Oh. My. God. YES. The love letter to Stan Sakai’s comics, the beautiful homage to vintage Japanese cinema with the camera framework and action, and OH MY LORD, THE COLORS AND SHADING DURING USAGI’S FIGHT WITH JAY IN THE FINALE???? THAT’S CINEMA! Excellent voice acting by Yuki Matsuzaki, which was his first English speaking role and personally chosen by Sakai himself to play the ronin rabbit! My only complaint is that I wish we’d gotten more of the Yojimbo characters in here, like Tomoe or Gen! Otherwise I can watch all three of these episodes on repeat and always get excited!

Lone Rat and Cubs ( Season 5 Ep. 10 ) The final appearance of Splinter, the episode Kevin Eastman wrote, and a beautiful send-off to this character. It’s a flashback, yes, but this is the episode we get to see Yoshi adapting to his mutation as a rat, raising his boys, trying to be a good father and struggling to survive from the Krang. It’s a part of his life we rarely ever get to see, and this episode shows us why he was a great father. Basically it's a try not to cry challenge. For me, THIS episode is the series finale because it’s just a perfect conclusion to Splinter and his story.

Requiem/Owari ( Season 4 Episodes 25-26 ) The finale to the overall series, the finale to this overarching story, and it’s just as heartbreaking and suspenseful as you’d expect. The writers don't hold back their punches, and it shows that the gloves have finally come off. The characters we’ve come to love and care for are at their breaking point, the Shredder is the most threatening he’s ever been, and the team decides it’s time to put the monster down for good. Whoever thinks this show was just ‘kiddie trash’ needs to be sat down and shown this two-parter, because GODDAMN. Ciro Nieli treated this with so much care and respect. I cannot help but adore the team who put this together because the stakes have been raised to an all-time high, and the final showdown between Shredder and the turtles here is hair-raising, all reaching its climax when Leonardo finishes Oroku Saki by beheading him. It’s powerful, it’s devastating, and it’s a damn excellent showcase of why this series was the best iteration of the franchise to date.

The Fourfold Trap ( Season 3 Ep. 23 ) Yet another homage to a horror movie, only this time it’s a lot more intense. Based on Saw, this episode makes you sit on the edge of your seat as you can only hope that the turtles will escape the traps Karai’s put them in. It’s all nerve wracking to watch on a first viewing experience, POOR DONNIE OH MY GOD, CAN WE STOP PUTTING THIS BOY IN ELECTROCUTION DEVICES???? He still manages to create a plan to save his brothers even while he’s being electrocuted! Also, SPLINTER IS BEST RAT DAD. This episode will teach you the meaning of ‘angsty dread’ and ‘overwhelming anxiety.’

Trans-Dimensional Turtles ( Season 4 Ep. 10 ) THE TURTLES FOREVER WE DESERVED BUT WE DIDN'T GET UNTIL CIRO NIELI HOOKED US UP WITH THE BEST CROSSOVER WE’VE EVER BEEN BLESSED WITH! The OG turtles are all so much fun to see again both in and out of 2D, Gilbert Godfried is always a delight, the 2012 turtles in traditional 2D animation is awesome, and ALL THE OG VOICE ACTORS ARE HERE AND CLEARLY HAVING THE TIMES OF THEIR LIVES. THE ROB PAULSEN JOKE IS LITERALLY A BLESSING XD I only wish it had been longer!

Honorable Mentions are Slash and Destroy, Pizza-Face, Within the Woods and Mutant Gangland!

And rounding it off is the last— but certainly not least— series, Rise!! I adore this one!! It’s right behind 2012 as my favorite TMNT series just for the stellar animation!! It’s such a shame that this one had to end so unfairly, but today I’m giving it the love it deserves!! Please note that I have yet to complete season two of ROTTMNT cuz my life has been crazy hectic and I haven’t had the time, but once I do, I’ll go back and update this section if I find more episodes I liked!

Raph’s Ride Along ( Season 2 Ep. 8A ) Ummmmmm the 2012 VA’s playing parody versions of their turtles as yokai criminals??? HELL YEAH. If only they got Astin to play a character though! Then we would’ve had a reverse Turtles Forever reunion! I came out of this episode really loving the Mud Dogz as characters and wanting more, especially Dastardly Danny cuz Rob Paulsen is always a win! Too bad this show got canned before we could really get to know these guys. BUT HEY! That’s what the fandom is for! 🤣

Insane in the Mama Train ( Season 1 Episode 25 ) When I watched this series blind, this episode blew my mind. Seeing something so well done had me screaming in joy with how expertly this episode was crafted. The stellar action choreography, the great comedic elements splashed in to lighten the tense mood, the ANIMATION OH MY LORD. Disney, take notes. And that ending leaves a pit in my stomach every time, like OOOOF, those expressions! That sudden tonal swap!

Mystic Library ( Season 1, Ep. 20A ) Probably my favorite comedy episode! The timing for the jokes in this one specifically is so well done, and every single one had me in tears. I’ve been trying to commit Donnie’s library rap to memory but alas, I’ve been failing.

The Clothes Don’t Make The Turtle ( Season 2 Episode 10B ) THIS. MORE OF THIS PRETTY PLEASE. It's just SO MUCH FUN. I really don’t have anything else to say other than this one is a great treat, also, the reanimated fan cut of this is spectacular!!

Snow Day ( Season 1 Ep. 23B ) This, for me, is the Christmas special of the series even though it’s in no way related to the holiday or has anything to do with it BUT I DON’T CARE LET ME DREAM. I love this one for the adorable interactions and the bonding! Seeing the characters goofing off and having fun, enjoying the weather and spending time together outside of the angst? I CRAVE FLUFF LIKE THIS.

And Tada! There it is! I hope you liked this!! It was tons of fun to compile all my favorite episodes into one project and share my thoughts! This fandom has been nothing but fantastic and I’m proud to be in it!

Leo finds out last.

She’s at the apartment, unloading the groceries she’d just gotten home from buying. They had a bit of excess food money this month, so she’d splurged and bought some special treats for herself and her brothers. She knew Mikey loved those gross sticky gummy candies, so she’d bought a huge family size pack of them just for him. Raph tended to forget to eat when he was in a hurry, so she’d picked up some meal supplement bars that she’d make sure to sneak into his backpack. Donnie, she’d spent some extra time thinking about. His texture issues made buying food for him harder, but she’d eventually settled on a box of water flavor packets that had some great nutritional stuff in it. Hopefully Donnie would like it, and if not she would just dare Raph to drink the packets raw.

She didn’t hear her phone ring from the table, too busy with her task. She couldn’t the stuff that needed to be refrigerated go bad.

As she finished she gave a twirl, feeling free in her new dress. Of all people, Casey had found it for her! It had tons of ruffles in the skirt that made it super poofy and felt so soft against her skin.

She took out the recycling while she was at it.

When she got back to the apartment it took her an extra ten minutes to remember where she’d put down her phone. When she finally found it anxiety spiked in her chest.

Fifteen missed calls.

Thirty-two texts from Mikey.

Ten texts from Raph.

Forty-six texts from April.

Seven texts from Casey.

One text from Donnie.

She opened the backlog.

She frowned. The message was weird. She could count the number of times they’d texted “I love you” on one hand, and she only had three fingers! She made her way towards her room as she went and opened up the rest of the messages.

I want to apologize to you. We made a promise to each other, a goofy promise, but a promise nonetheless. I’m going to break that promise.

I’m really proud of how you’ve grown. You’ve become one of my favorite people in the world, despite everything. You are strong and brave and you’ve learned how to love with your whole heart. I know you’ll grow and do amazing things.

Mikey and Raph have grown, too. Mikey’s art is going to take off in the Hidden City, I just know it, and Raph has the potential to do anything he sets his mind to. Gosh, I sound like I kindergarten teacher, but it’s true. I couldn’t be more proud of my family.

But I’m holding you back. I haven’t grown. If anything, I’m regressing. I can’t see a future for me where I do anything but hurt or hinder you, and I never want to do that. I want you to be free to live without the restraint of caring for a useless burden of a brother.

So I’m taking myself out of the equation.

I know it’s unfair of me to ask you to understand my reasoning. I know its unfair to ask you not to be sad or to not grieve.

Raph- “I’m on my way!”

Raph is up and out of the lair practically before you finish your sentence, grabbing his sweatshirt if it’s daytime. Doesn’t think about Leo’s portals, doesn’t think about the Turtle Tank or the Shell Hogs, just runs. He is on the phone with you the whole time he’s on his way, asking if you need him to pick anything up. He tries to ask what’s wrong, but you just sniffle, so he doesn’t push it. It’s quiet until he lands on your fire escape and hangs up. The second he’s in your apartment you’re in his arms. “It’s okay sweetheart, Raph’s got ya.” He lets you do whatever you need to do, cry or beat on him or pace, but he’s touching you the whole time. He’ll get a little upset if you don’t want to tell him what’s wrong but he will also get over it because he understands. Holds you all night long for like a week afterwards, to protect you.

Leo- Shing

He is already in your apartment, hanging up his phone while the portal closes behind him. “Hey, hey, what’s wrong hermosa?” He grabs you and tangles you with him on the couch, until there’s no telling where you end and he starts. He wants to talk about it. But he will ramble on about whatever pops into his head while stroking your back until you calm down. Once you’ve calmed down though, he will coax it out of you. If it’s something that he can fix, it gets fixed immediately and with extreme prejudice. If it’s not something he can fix, prepare to be pampered. This turtle will worship the ground you walk on when you let him.

Donnie- Click

Hopefully you’ve been around long enough to understand how Donnie works, because he did not just hang up on you because he doesn’t care. He proves that by showing up at your apartment a bit later with your favorite takeout, favorite candy, a giant cat plush, and your favorite movie. He’ll let you do whatever you need to do while you watch the movie, whether that’s curl up on his chest, lay your head on his lap, or cuddle with the cat plush on the other side of the couch. (He might get a little jealous of the plush if you choose the last option, but he won’t say anything. Yet.) After the movie, he’ll tell you that he’s willing to listen if you need to talk. You need to be careful though, because if he finds out someone hurt you, it’s jover. No more Mr. Nice Donnie.

Mikey- “Leeeeo-” Click

Mikey tumbles through the portal and promptly bundles you up in a blanket and sets you on the couch. He bustles to the kitchen, chattering at you while he makes tea and whips up something quick to eat. he sets it down on the coffee table and then starts hand feeding you, still chattering away. once the food and tea are gone, he pulls you into him, blanket and all, then asks what’s wrong. he’ll listen, he’ll give advice, he’ll sit in silence with you, whatever you need. he won’t leave though, not even if a mission comes and his brothers need him, not until he’s made you laugh. it doesn’t take all that long, he’s got a talent for it. he stays a few extra days anyway, just because he missed you (and to make absolutely sure you’re okay now).
