A Mike Wheeler apology //

In his painting, Mike Wheeler's best friend Will depicts him as a brave paladin, holding a sword and protecting friends with a shield with a heart symbol.

That's the role Mike has always covered: in real life and playing D&D, jumping off a cliff to spare a friend or facing a monster in the last campaign: bravery and justice shine in his eyes since he was a nerdy little kid. A medieval paladin in shining armor, with his insecurities and frailties, but still with firm morals and ready to stand up for others.

In Stranger Things, as a whole story, something changes in front of our eyes, about this classical (and frankly already seen) narration: what we expect him to be suddenly changes: a woman is the superhero, a woman is the protagonist; the paladin turns out to be a support of the heroine, the one who's supposed to be a step behind. Not only that: he happens to fall in love with her, in a way that's still today unexcusable for a man. Deeply and with no limits. He's also terrified that he could lose her because he's just not enough for her.

A paladin, a real man can't love so much: he looks "obsessed". I guess if he was a woman, no one would even care.

In his teenage years, he shouldn't feel about a girl that way, he's forgetting about his male friends: but if Steve dates a lot of girls, that's cool, that's character development.

If Lucas equally thinks about Max, he's not a bad guy. Because he's not supposed to be the paladin.

Mike's character broke the tradition about his supposed central role in a group of friends: the hero, the core, the egoistic centre. Instead, I think it's amazing how he questions about his own self, EXACTLY because he lacks the power to stop Vecna. He's the Lois to Eleven's Clark. And he's proud to be.

That's why a bunch of very vocal haters can't stand him. Because Mike was supposed to be "the" Eleven.

Also, caring for a best friend doesn't mean he must get his hidden intentions: it's not Mike's fault that he didn't understand Will's speech. Still, he would jump off a cliff for him. Because he's a paladin at heart.

his number 1 priority was protecting eleven. he knew that he had to protect her. ever since that stormy november night, he’d fallen in love with her. the charm she had, her pretty eyes, her hair... her face, her voice that’s so very delicate, it was all part of el. and he loved that. he loved el. nothing could compare to this love that he had for the teenage girl, it was unmistakable. nothing could separate them, and if you tried, they always found a way back to each other. as we see here, eleven no longer holds that bitterness. she understands him, and she loves him. his dorky personality, his cute ‘stars’, everything about him was perfect. and although others may disagree, he was simply gorgeous. she’d missed him, the warm embraces that he handled with such delicacy, she couldn’t get enough of him. the last kiss they would share, it meant everything to the lovesick teenagers. they will definitely marry one day, the truth is undeniable.
