He should. 

He should walk right past the guys, his team, and not stop until he’s back standing on your doorstep. He already knows how it would go.

You’d smile that smile he’d fallen in love with all those years ago at group, however nervous it had been, and ask him how his trip was. Maybe you’d have little Matias on your hip, maybe he’d be curled asleep in the crook of your elbow instead. Either way, Frankie would take him from you and tell you it was fine. Uneventful. A good catch up with old friends he doesn’t get to see as much as he’d like. Pope’s seventeen grand would go in the college fund, and he’d be back at work Monday morning. No jungles or drug lords or familiar weight of any kind of gun in his hands ever again. Just his son in his arms and you by his side and Tyler’s tail still beating the floorboards at your feet despite his age. 

He hates how comfortable he feels here, in Pope’s shipping container of nightmares. 

The way he took that gun in the jungle without even hesitating, tucking it away like it was muscle memory, made him sick. Literally. He’d almost thought he’d gotten away with it, heaving in the bathroom of his run down hotel room in the middle of the night, but a concerned glance from Will that lasted just a beat too long this morning had crushed that hope. It’s no secret that he’s the one who’ll suffer the most, should things not go to plan. But nobody says it out loud.

He’s hanging on by a thread as it is. Another stint in rehab and therapy on top of the legal bills from the last time? He can’t put you through that. He won’t. He-

Frankie looks around at his friends, the brothers in arms he’s taken bullets for. Part of him is grateful for his service, grateful for the bonds he made and the skills he picked up and the places he got to see. Even, in some twisted way, grateful for how it failed him. Because it brought him right to you. But he was conditioned to protect the men in this room, conditioned to fight and die alongside them if he had to. He doesn’t like how it feels as though his past is winning. He was eighteen. No cash, no family, no prospects. And there was the military, offering him everything he so desperately craved all wrapped up in shiny paper. No choice. And look where it got him. 

Your eyes flash in his mind, your laugh echoes in his ears. Frankie can almost feel the warm weight of you pressed against his chest. He thinks of Matias, of little hands that grab at the collars of his shirts and soft hair that tickles his ear as he rocks the baby to sleep at night. He thinks of Tyler’s penchant for clean socks and the yellow front door and the fact he meant to mow the backyard before he left. God, he wants to go home. He wants so badly to leave, he should.

He should go. He loves you, and he should go.

The first one I had actually picked was Kilgharrahs - tempus rerun imperator - or time is sovereign over all things. I really liked this for Kilgharrah because its just so fitting to me. Kilgharrah is old. When we finally meet him, he's easily thousands of years old and has lived through so much and yet he still remains. Kilgharrah is also a very omnipotent character, he always seems to know what's going on, what's going to happen, even when he might not. Even at the end of the story, Kilgharrah is still alive. He's outlived his kind, the dragonlords, Uther. Everyone except Merlin. In the end, I think this proverb could also be applied to Merlin, but I liked the other one I picked for him better.

Moving on to Merlins - amare et sepere vix deo conceditur - even a god finds it hard to be wise and love at the same time. At the beginning Merlin is tasked with a really heavy responsibility - to guide and protect this guy who has been groomed to hate and despise everything that Merlin is. That in itself if already hard, but later he develops real feelings for Arthur, whether you want to interpret them platonically or romantically.

For my beloved Elyan I chose luctor et emergo - i struggle and i emerge. Of all the knights, I believe that Elyan has led the hardest overall life. He was born a peasant, lost his mother at a young age, has canonically had relationship issues with his father and sister and spent at least four years traveling on his own. He faces a ton of struggle both internally and externally and yet he’s still such a sweet person. He finally emerges from the problems facing him as a knight of Camelot, and more than that, the Queen’s brother and a close personal friend of the king himself. I think of all the knights Elyan did the best for himself and came the furthest.

Morgana -  Fléctere si néqueo súperos Acheronta movebo - If I cannot move heaven, I will raise hell. That’s pretty much what she did lmao. My personal opinions aside, Morgana couldn’t achieve her goals the way she wanted and set out to accomplish them in a different way, by literally raising all sorts of hell.

Gaius - concullus non facit monachum - the cowl does not make the monk Regardless of how fandom kind of chooses to see Gaius, he did lead a life during a really precarious and dangerous time. At the end of the day, Gaius survived and did what he thought was best given his options and I respect him for that. I chose this quote because I felt like it fit what we see of Gaius; he dons a lot of hats - advisor, physician, sorcerer, guardian - and yet he’s still more than all those things. He’s still looking out for his own interests at the end of the day. I’m probably interpreting that quote wrong but

Gwaine - bonum non est melius quam pessimus - it is not goodness to be better than the worst. I chose this for Gwaine because I think it ultimately fits the story we see for him. He’s the son of nobility and generally led kind of a nice life up until his father’s death. Which we also never really know when that was, so Gwaine could have led an easy life until shortly before we meet him in canon. Losing his father and being kind of snubbed by whichever king (i don’t remember who and i’m not going to look it up) was a big life lesson and then when he later meets Arthur I think it kind of teaches him that being better than the worst person you know doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a good person and he has to learn to be good on his own through the example of Merlin.

Percival - audaces fortuna juvat - fortune favors the bold I chose this quote because I really think it depends on how you interpret “favor”. Percival is one of the only core knights to make it to the end, so you could see that as being favored. Time and again Percival survives circumstances that others don’t or that others might not have, which is both good and bad. Percival is bold and brave and I hope the rest of his life was good.

Leon - semper paratus - always ready I chose this for Leon because it just felt right. He’s the First Knight, probably someone Arthur has known for a really long time and he’s just. Always there. Always ready to follow Arthur into whatever mess he’s going for next.

Mordred - aut viam inveniam aut faciam - I’ll either find a way or make one. This was one that I chose because of the ✨vibe✨ It just felt fitting. Mordred always found a way to achieve his ends and when a path was proving fruitless (Arthur), he switched to one that he thought had better odds (Morgana).

Morgause - memento mori - remember you will die This one was the hardest for me. I love this quote though and I really wanted to use it so its just kind of ✨the vibe✨ for her

Uther - damnant quod non intelligunt - they condemn what they do not understand I feel like this one is pretty obvious lmao But its fitting. Uther didn’t understand magic, he didn’t want to understand it, so he condemned it.

Lancelot - exitus acta probat - the end justifies the means To me this is really fitting because Lancelot is so reckless. He’s kind of impulsive and his justification for things is pretty much this lol. Mans was down with forgery to become a knight, he was a cage fighter because it’s really the only thing he knows how to do and then later he helps keep Merlin’s secrets because it’s what he thought was right. I personally think Lancelot could do anything and as long as he got what he wanted in the end, he’d feel it was justified.

Gwen - alis volat proprio - she flies with her own wings Gwen is one of the hardest working characters in this whole show and everything she achieved she did because of her own hands, so that’s why I picked this one for her.

And last but not least,

Arthur - non ducor, duco - I am not led, I lead I felt like this was fitting for him because it’s what he does. He’s the prince, he’s in charge of the knights, he’s the king. We rarely see him relinquish his leadership (which makes sense) and he’s a great leader imo. 

Sorry this took so long, I just wanted to be able to sit down and really get all my thoughts out in a cohesive way.

2020 HIGHLIGHTS ✨

rules: list your top 10 shows (bl or not) you watched in 2020 (doesn’t necessarily have to be shows that came out in 2020 though!)

1. 2GETHER & STILL2GETHER

my first thai drama, and even after all the amazing shows i’ve watched this year, it still has a special place in my heart. watching 2gether was the first time i’d ever seen a queer romcom that just... was. for me, by the simple fact of its being, 2gether was revolutionary. and then still2gether came along and took all the best things about the first season and gave us something beautiful and quiet and lovely and just proved to me, once and for all, that queer happiness doesn’t need to justify its own existence. there can be gay cuddles on the beach for no other reason than that we want them. 

2. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

i don’t really have the words for this one but. it makes my heart so very soft.

3. FRIEND ZONE 2: DANGEROUS AREA

season one was mindless fun because everyone was an absolute trashfire and it was hella cathartic to watch, but season 2... wow. i love it for so many reasons: it has messy and authentic queer rep; the characterisation is excellent and i somehow care about all of the characters; amazing women taking centre stage(!); a wlw relationship with lesbian, ace and bipolar rep; multiple interesting plotlines; actual character development; arm weerayut as a chaos gremlin... absolutely one of my favourites of 2020.

4. CHERRY MAGIC

i don’t think i need to explain this one, which is fortunate, because i have no idea how exactly i’d describe the happy-warm-fuzzy-queer-seen-loving-affirmed-profound feeling that rises in my chest whenever i think about it. 

5. THE GIFTED: GRADUATION

confession: i liked season 2 more than season 1 (with the exception of the ending, which we don’t talk about). season 1 was enjoyable and interesting, but for me it was season 2 which made me love this series. it did some incredibly interesting and complicated things (even if it didn’t quite nail the landing): it pushed characters to the breaking point and wove so many layers into the story and questioned its own underlying themes. plus, watching it alongside everyone in the fandom made it 200% better. i love all of you and i love this show. egg girl 5eva.

6. THE SHIPPER

i 100% understand why so many people didn’t like this show, or found it problematic, but through some fluke it absolutely worked for me (even the ending). one day i will write an essay explaining my rationale, but for now i’ll just say that it’s one of my favourite shows about adolescence and queerness and identity and compassion and friendship and love that i’ve ever watched. 

7. YYY

this series is absolutely off its rocker, and it somehow managed to be one of the most affirming shows i’ve watched. it shouldn’t have worked by it did, and i love it so much.

8. 3 WILL BE FREE

absolutely iconic. amazing plot, stunning visuals, great characters, canon polyamory, jennie being incredible... what a series.

9. MANNER OF DEATH

i love the fact that this show exists; i love the mix of crime and romance; i love maxtul’s acting; i love the central relationship; i love bun. i know we’re not even halfway through yet, but this show is doing something special and i’m so grateful that i get to watch it unfold in real time. 

10. CHIHAYAFURU (SEASON 3)

odd one out on my list, but I had to include it. chihayafuru is my all-time favourite anime and it finally got a third season, which is somehow even better than the first two. mashima taichi is one of my favourite characters of all time and his storyline hits me on such a profound level. plus, in the years since i first say this show i’ve fallen in love with classical japanese literature (particularly heian poetry) so i had newfound appreciation for the karuta matches (aka i cried every time someone recited one of my favourite poems)

other favourites: together with me, he’s coming to me, sotus and sotus s, my dear loser: edge of 17, why r u, theory of love, wake up chanee!, gameboys, pearl next door, uta koi (anime), three kingdoms (2010), blood and water (netflix). (itsay would almost certainly be on my list if i’d had time to watch it. same with dark blue kiss, which i had to pause so i could do my assignments)

Final Thoughts

well, it’s been... a year (i don’t think anyone needs a reminder of the details) but writing this post has reminded me of all the amazing shows and people I discovered over the course of it.

thank you to everyone for being so lovely and creative and funny and quirky and kind and passionate. you’re all incredibly awesome people and i wish all of you the very best xx

i’ve always kind of wanted one based loosely on these pictures x, x, x. im thinking ponyo meets enchanted meets h20 little mermaid AF realness! like maybe hes this lil regular boy high school college student taking pictures and stuff and sees this girl wash up on the shore looking very confused. so he helps her and you know, shes a little hysterical and cant walk very well, takes her into his apartment puts a towel over here bc she like keeps talking abt how shes a mermaid and hes like oh my god shes crazy ahh. she keeps saying her dad is king of the ocean and hes like???? do u have a last name? and the police dont know anything abt her she has no file, no id, no finger print in the database? 

basically the mermaid is staying w the college student in his apartment and he like teaches her what the microwave and the tv is and its very soft  they fall in luv maybe drama he has a girl friend who sucks a lot who is angry abt mermaid girl idk maybe the government realizes and tries to steal her! fun THAT FIRST PIC? MAYBE HE SAVED HER WHEN HE WAS A KID ONCE FROM DROWNING!!! AHHH

alternatively i found these pictures were are in the same vein very aquamarine x, x, x, lifeguard off duty surfing and he gets stuck in a gnarly wave and almost drowns but this mermaid saves his life! and he comes to see her a lot on the beach and they hang out and fall in love he teaches her how to speak english shows her his phone!!! MAYBE THE GOVERNMENT IS ALSO POACHING HER WE LOVE DRAMA

ok last mermaid plot? BUT ITS A SIREN PLOT!!!!!!! these sirens/a siren wipes out this sailors entire ship with the sirens song they all get drowned/eaten .... but plot twist! this one sailor homie lives bc he is DEAF and therefore IMMUNE TO THE SIREN SONG!! so this siren keeps tryna sing at him and its not working and u know they fall in love good stuff MORE POACHES MORE PIRATES MORE GOVERNMENT TRYNA KILL THE AQUATIC AMERICAN BC I LOVE SUFFERING modern or maybe set back in the day???? spicy

I have actually tried to stay away from this group as much as possible so that when I did end up stanning them I could have unbiased clean slate initial reactions

That being said, here are the few snippets that I do know before watching any guides or interviews or music videos, and my only points of reference being small amounts of exposure via tumblr and having heard some of their songs (on Spotify recommended. naturally):

Hongjoong: I swear to the Lord I had no clue he was the leader for sooooooo long. Aly once was like "oh yeah, the leader of Ateez used to have a mullet but he cut it recently" and I was just like "THAT'S THE LEADER??" I thought he was like. maybe second youngest or smth... ajdkakaka

Seonghwa: I thought he was the leader for literal months.... (I knew he was the oldest so idk why I thought that?? cause like leaders usually tend to be the second oldest, that's like a pretty common pattern. but yeah for some reason I thought he was the leader until Aly told me it was Hongjoong)

Yunho: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Is this a member?? I would not have known. I am so sorry, but also I feel like that isn't really my fault. Clearly there are not enough Yunho stans on Tumblr bc I know absolutely nothing about him from Tumblr osmosis (or at least I haven't retained anything).

Yeosang: This one I know is a visual? Apparently he is J's bias? That's about all I know so far.

San: The impression I have gotten is that he's very disrespectful given the amount of times I have seen people referring to him as S(at)an or something similar

Mingi: I'm pretty sure he is a rapper (I think?? right?) and for some reason his face gives me some kind of vibe but I cannot for the life of me put my finger on what that vibe is ????? I reckon somewhere in Scandinavia! 💗 I love it here, and I think that’s where I’d like to build a long-term home. The best spot for me would be somewhere close to both the forest/mountain and the water, but also not too far from civilisation.

8. Why did you choose your college/uni subject or work place you are currently at?

I chose to study literature and translation cause I’m a huge nerd who’s always loved reading and learning languages. It’s really my thing, you know? And I decided to pick the family I’m working for in Oslo because I fell in love with the city when I visited it in May 2017, and the family in particular seemed chill, nice and professional. c:

Can you expand on the Geralt, Regis, and Philippa being autistic? I'm intrigued...

Yes friend. Yes I can. As it happens I’ve already talked about Phil at length here, but I got distracted by…Life before I could get to the boys. So I’ll do that now. Much like Phil’s this isn’t going to be very ordered….Or detailed, unfortunately, bc I can’t remember everything I wanted to say on the subjects, and I don’t have the spoons to go trawling through the books atm. 

This is all, also, entirely book based, because I’ve never played the games (I just occasionally reblog gifsets here bc a)- pretty, b)- CONTENT and c)- oh look nice visual representations of my children) but idk what’s going on there. 

Regis: 

Regis presents some potential vague problems with the autistic thing bc he’s not human…but as I’m not suggesting all higher vampires are automatically autistic, and because I love my dear awkward bean, I don’t really care and we’re pressing on with haste. 

-Okay, okay, the biggest/my favourite thing for this hc with Regis is his habit of infodumping/overexplaining EVERYTHING. He either just gets really into it/excited about Sharing His Knowledge, or else he can’t filter what of all the many things bouncing around in his brain are actually important (bc they are all important) so he just says everything meanwhile the hansa are all just ‘Regis pls we got the point ten minutes ago STOP TALKING’ And he knows he does this, and he’s tried so many times to get a hold on it and stop but it just…It’s not happening. 

-Regis having special interests in herbs/plants, particularly if they can be used for medicinal purposes…Or making moonshine. He’s had several lifetimes to Indulge this interest and he pretty much knows everything about everything. 

-He has a pretty distinctive pattern of speech. And I like the idea that his Extreme Authentic Regis-Flavoured Politeness that’s a fairly staple part of his character is something that’s developed over the years, first from a coping type mechanism bc the politer he was, the harder it was to accidentally say something wrong and offend someone, and eventually transitioned into an internal rule so this is now just the way he is/has to be. 

-Kind of a combination of the above point and the first: Regis explaining things in ways he thinks are very clear and explicit (while also maintaining the necessary politeness rules) but everyone around him is just ???? regis wut???? 

-Regis calling himself a coward when it comes to combat situations because he doesn’t know how else to explain the fact that he freezes up and panics in these situations (the dude basically cannot die, okay, this isn’t a mortality fear, but there’s something going on). The truth is, though, that battles are sensory hell, too much noise, too much feeling, too much visual stimulation too much and he can’t deal with it (sweet bean) 

-I like Regis being on the other end of the empathy spectrum to, say, Philippa, and being hyperempathetic (which I think fits him fairly well - I mean….The guy is an immensely powerful, centuries old higher vampire….and he spends his time chilling, making moonshine for passing strangers, and being a bloody barber surgeon and helping people with his vast wealth of Knowledge. And also the way he responds to, say, the girl in the village when he performs the whole fire miracle thing to save her, despite the fact it’ll expose him, because he just nope, not having this. And he feels things so deeply, he CARES so much, he’s such a good soul, this suits him well)��

-Okay but in contrast to that Regis is pretty fucking unflappable. He doesn’t really do big displays of emotion very well, and tends to approach most things with Logic. (See: that moment in LotL when Geralt is like ‘okay ppl we have a job we are LEAVING’ and the hansa just explodes into action and rushes off to hop to it. Meanwhile Regis sits there, chill as you please, just like…yes, okay Geralt, an explanation if you please, I require Reasons before I leap into action thank you very much) And he’s got that expected ‘comes across as pretty withdrawn/composed’ thing going on too.

Geralt: 

Geralt, like Regis, presents a few slightly thorny problems bc a lot of the things that read as traits for him are muddled up with the whole witcher mutations…but again…i Relate too much to care, and I’m too tired to get into a debate with myself concerning this, so onwards and upwards… 

-I feel like he’s somewhere in the middle of the empathy spectrum. Like you’ve got Phil who’s just…None and doesn’t give af, Regis that’s just like *feels everything so much and vibrates with it* and then Geralt’s in the middle where he….Can’t really read people’s emotions very well, but there’s also a fairly large heaping of compassionate empathy in there, in that he WANTS to help people he just…Doesn’t quite understand them very well? So he’s like…Trying His Best on the empathy front. (bless) 

-Geralt kind of going the opposite direction that Regis went with the talking/socialising thing. Where Regis is really polite/long-winded to kind of compensate and attempt to cover all bases, Geralt is just...To the point. Blunt. Says what he’s thinking/what he means. Doesn’t have time for anyone who does anything other than that. He gave up trying to riddle out manipulation/lies long ago. Either talk simply, or don’t talk at all. 

-Geralt repeatedly being like ‘what is this feeling I am experiencing?’ *prods it uncertainly* which has a name: alexithmiya, and is Great Fun btw. 

-Let’s be honest here, he’s really not the world’s biggest emoter. That isn’t to say that he doesn’t have emotions/doesn’t feel (ofc he does) he’s just really not very good at showing it. 

-Absolutely less than zero, well into negative figures here, interested in politics. There’s too much lying, too much manipulation, too many games, too many exhausting little factions and social rules and nuances to try and figure out and he is decidedly Too Old For This Shit. 

-Same vein: hates spies/spying. Can’t be doing this with all this under the table, betraying, two-faced bullshit. Wasn’t made for it, can’t be fucked with it, stop doing it, please and thank you. 

-Geralt transcending the typical autistic realms of same!clothes/same!food and heading into the territory of same!name: every horse I have ever, or will ever, own is called Roach. Nice and simple. 

-His witcher medallion ending up being a comfort object because of how constant/present it is. It’s a nice weight, and it probably doubles as a stim toy tbh because the spiky bits can get rubbed between fingers. 

-Geralt having very set Internal Rules/demonstrating black and white thinking. He’s very firm about these sorts of things in the games, things along the lines of not killing dragons/intelligent beasts etc, etc. But also his views on neutrality/not taking part/wanting to be removed from what’s happening (these do change slightly, but it takes a damn long time) 

-I can make an argument for Geralt being change resistant/struggling to adapt without too much trouble. He does the same thing day in day out and has done for years, and doesn’t seem in any great hurry to stop doing that. 

-Literally every speech Geralt makes to the hansa is just...Geralt. Child. Ur trying. But lead by action, okay?

Some Spider-Man:Homecoming Awesome Moments/thoughts, behind a cut bc spoilers, and also long:

I basically squee’d through the entire beginning, after the like Damage Control/Toomes part. From the whole orchestrated version of the Spider-Man cartoon theme during the Marvel sequence (which honestly was way too frickin long, but the music was a good touch), to the vlogging part, like it was just. So Good. (my Spider-Man friend liked the vlogging, too, said it was a very Peter Parker thing)

Adrian Toomes literally has the stupidest reason for hating Tony Stark, and also tbh, supes awk I’ve been salty/on guard so long from the anti’s, it wasn’t obvious to me at all that Toomes was Evil All Along, I lowkey read it as “and this is when I decided to become Evil” moment with him staring with hate at Tony. Apparently, according to my friend I went with, who is more of a Spider-’verse guy, it was p obvious to him *like a cross between shrug emoji and :’)* (I think it was the fact that, like, Tony’s face took up half that screen that had me on guard? It says *US* Department etc, joint venture, etc, but like isn’t Pepper still CEO of Stark Industries? I mean idk I guess I’m kind of annoyed the anti’s have me so on guard that I looked at that and was like “great it’s set up to blame Tony personally for stuff that is again NOT his personal sole total fault”)

(this whole middle section I stopped taking notes and was just watching bc the next notes I have are on Tony losing control of the screwing the pooch metaphor lmao. but a couple points:)

the invisible jet. them playing up the danger of the turbines was really suspenseful, but also very nice because it demonstrates genre-savvy. also, that part where you see Spidey on the top of the jet camo panels bc he’s on the bottom :D :D

seeing Peter save Toomes made me a bit sad bc I was remembering the post Nat wrote about the parallels we COULD have had, i.e. from IM1, IM3, that were ultimately cut :(

Tony’s whole extending the metaphor on screwing the pooch and absolutely losing control of it with the whole free clinic and hybrid puppies line lmao.

“he made a really mature decision. surprised the heck out of us” :D :D these two are so frickin out of their depth with any kid, let alone Peter. Thank heck Peter’s the voice of reason here. (again, good flavor, cute characterization points, gr8 all around)

the whole post credit scene and the metatexual poking fun at the audience for waiting for something for forever that doesn’t seem like it’s worth it  lmaooo. (actually when I’d first glanced at a gifset on Tumblr, I’d thought he was referring to waiting for Peggy since TFA ended on that note, so I thought it was referring back to that)

re: like the treatment of the high school setting, it seemed a biiiit...stereotypical to me, but I think ultimately it was a good mix of current with nostalgic for the maybe older crowd who’d watched three iterations of Spider-Man in so many years, I think. Like, the whole “You’re bullied because you’re a nerd” and the whole “very clear defined cliques” thing is so....Mean Girls era, and that kind of was the touch of nostalgia. But also they did kind of set it up where Peter and Ned weren’t necessarily bullied by EVERYONE *for* being nerds, because Flash was also in Decathalon, and more because Flash was a jerk, which I think was a good updated social mores touch. Also, I liked that the “comeuppance” scene with Peter commandeering Flash’s (dad’s) car wasn’t all vindictive, it was fueled by genuine need, and he didn’t go out of his way to destroy the car, he just literally had never actually driven on roads before :DD

so kind of in conclusion: SM:H really is All That and More, it was so good and I want to watch it again a million times
