Mermaid VR-LA au

Maxim gets given his gift! And VR-LA also scares the crap out of a random human (just a random tourist who's keeping them from hanging out, entirely innocent here)

VR-LA held the cog necklace to his chest as he swam, wrapped in seaweed to keep it hidden in the same way he had seen humans wrap their gifts with paper. He had asked Maxim to meet him at the dock where they reunited that evening and he was in quite a hurry after he had been delayed. As he got closer, he spotted two figures on the dock. Somebody, not Maxim, was sitting where Maxim normally would and chatting with him. VR-LA retreated behind some rocks, watching for a moment.

VR-LA didn't know the other person, they certainly didn't look like any of the humans he had seen around the beaches multiple times. Maxim didn't look particularly pleased with the conversation either, frown more intense than normal. He started sneaking up towards the dock, managing to dart under unspotted, listening into the conversation.

It was painfully generic, the stranger asking a bunch of questions about the town and Maxim just giving the shortest answers he could. VR-LA realized this probably wasn't Maxim's friend then, inching towards where the stranger's legs were hanging over the edge. He gently grabbed one ankle with his claws, making the stranger let out a loud shriek and rapidly withdrew, saying something grabbed them. VR-LA went further back into the dark in case they checked, but they didn't as they just ran off.

Maxim sat down, waiting a long moment before speaking. "...VR-LA." He called.

VR-LA swam forward, poking his head above the water while chuckling. "You're welcome." He teased. Maxim raised an eyebrow at VR-LA, but VR-LA just reached up and put the gift on the dock. "I made something for you!"

Maxim picked it up, accepting the change of topic. He unwrapped the seaweed, wincing mildly at the wet sensation on his fingers. VR-LA won't wrap it next time then. He held the necklace by the cog, gently turning it in his fingers. VR-LA let out a happy chirp and Maxim smiled a bit.

"Thank you, VR-LA." He said, putting it on, although it visibly got his shirt wet. "I'll make sure to make something for you as well."

This painting is the first of my Pattern Cats series on a larger scale, at 12x12 inches on a hand shaped aluminum panel. The cat's checkered fur is repeated in the check patterns of a golden Betta fish, glowing caterpillar, orchid-like flowers, and fuzzy moth, while the remaining plants and creatures reveal soft stripes and dots.

I wanted the scene to live at the very edge of gentle calm and buzzing excitement, as if we are on the cusp of seeing the fish complete its lazy rotation while a gust of wind sets the plants in motion, startling the moths into flight. Clouds will shift, whiskers will twitch, and the snail will complete its slow journey to the next leaf, all in perfect balance and harmony. I hope you see it too!
