Welcome to Michigan Warrior Cats!

About the Blog:

Michigan Warrior Cats has three major goals. First, it aims to compile a list of animals, plants, and fungi found within the state of Michigan that can be used as prefixes to represent cats' appearances within a traditional Warriors naming system. It also aims to compile a list of plants and fungi with documented medicinal uses that are available for the clans located in this setting. Lastly, it serves as the hub for the blog writer's personal Michigan FanClan project. Relevant art, character information, worldbuilding information, and writing will be shared here as the project is developed further!

About the Writer:

Hello! My name is Quiet. Having grown up in Michigan, I have always loved exploring and learning about our diverse and plentiful ecosystems, and the Warriors series written by Erin Hunter was a staple of my childhood. Michigan Warrior Cats is a love letter to the state I call home written through the eyes of a longtime Warriors fan and an avid creator. While running this blog and working on my FanClan project, I hope to learn more about the animals, plants, and fungi of Michigan and grow as an artist and writer in the process.

Although Michigan Warrior Cats is intended to be a resource for myself first and foremost, I'd like this blog to be useful for others as well. Feel free to send in any questions you may have about traditional Warriors naming within the Great Lakes area, and I will answer to the best of my ability when I have time! I'm also happy to rate names or suggest prefixes for your Warriors characters.

Hi Maya! Are you planning on bringing the mini backpacks back in patterns other than dungeon delver? I would love one, especially in the bee or snail print!

as much as i love the backpacks, in order to print them again we would have to run a kickstarter. the minimum order per design is pretty high and the over all minimum order is even higher. and the backpacks themselves are pretty expensive to produce, so even selling them at $60 each, the profit margin is not great.

idk, i would really like to make more backpacks in the future, especially now that we have a separate office space and and would actually have room to store them, but it would have to be a kickstarter or preorders.

also, we did sell bee pattern backpacks, but the factory screwed up the sizing of the pattern so we had to sell them basically at cost because we couldn’t justify charging $60 for them, which was honestly a huge blow financially because the bee bags were the ones we were expecting to sell the best. and they did! but when you sell at cost you lose money because aside from product cost, you have to factor in taxes and human time/work, power, storage space/rent, etc.

things are fine now, but at the time it was just... a bad experience. we even popped a tire on the way back from picking up the backpack from a friend (it was a group order) and ended up stranded 3 hours away from home for a couple days because no one had our tires. 😂

Psst... fishblr... I'd love to hear some opinions on my new ten gallon tank! I want it to be more heavily planted than it is right now, but I can't decide how to go about it. Should I add some new species, a few more plants of the same species I already have, or just be patient and wait for what I currently have to grow in more? Initially I was fine doing the latter, but I saw some people online acting like any tank that starts with less than, like, 75% plant coverage is doomed to be completely overtaken by algae and fail, and it got me worried since I'm starting to see my first bits of brown algae on the substrate and driftwood. It kinda just feels like bullshit marketing designed to sell more plants, but who knows, maybe it's not.

My current plants are vallisneria, pearlweed, amazon sword, moneywort, dwarf hairgrass, and a moss ball. They're all doing pretty well: the vallisneria has already produced five runners, the sword is making lots of new leaves, and the moneywort reached the surface so I trimmed and replanted the tips. The pearlweed melted really badly at first, but it's filling out now and I'm probably going to trim it soon too. I also just added some red root floaters, amazon frogbit, dwarf water lettuce, and water spangles that may or may not survive (lots and lots of melting so far, but I'm also starting to see a few new leaves on some of the plants. The frogbit in particular seems to be doing well even though the plants had exactly zero roots upon arrival).

Some assorted information that might be helpful: this is my first planted tank ever, so I'm starting with plants that are on the easier side of things. It's been set up for about a month with medium-ish light, no CO2, root tabs, very light dosing of a complete liquid fertilizer, and a basic sand substrate. I'm trying for a roughly triangular scape with taller plants in the back left and shorter plants in the front right. It's going to be home to a betta and some invertebrates (nerite snails/mystery snails/amano shrimp/cherry shrimp, still undecided).

Right now, I'm leaning towards just getting some moss or other epiphytes like anubias to stuff in the spaces between the rocks and the driftwood to hide my atrocious glue job and letting everything else grow out more before making new additions.

Any thoughts?
