Gum Disease: Getting to the Root of the Problem

The tools are simple, the process is easy, but yet, most people do it incorrectly or not at all. What I am referring to is oral hygiene. The simple act of brushing ones' teeth correctly makes a world of difference to the patient in how they feel about themselves and how the world sees, and sometimes smells them.

How to Brush

Add a pea sized amount of tooth paste to a soft bristled toothbrush. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle and gently go back and forth with a rolling motion focusing on two to three teeth at a time. Do the front, top, and back of each tooth. If you divide the mouth into four quadrants, you will have an easier time focusing on that particular section for the proper amount of time. Each quadrant should be brushed for a minimum of 30 seconds.

How to Floss

In order to properly floss, whined the floss around the index finger of your left hand and the index finger of your right hand. Leave two inches between your thumbs to guide the floss in between the teeth. Contouring around each tooth to form a C shape, slide up and down and under the gum line. It starts when bacteria die and the gums to become inflamed. This in turn causes the gums to bleed and become red and visibly irritated. By simply leaving the bacteria to fester, they eventually enter your blood stream, and cause a host of additional problems such as heart disease, diabetes, blood infection, and even low birth-weight babies.

If you are brushing correctly, you will notice blood upon brushing your gums. Those who do not brush correctly, tend to avoid the gums because of bleeding. Sometimes pus and red, irradiated gums are present. Bad breath can also be a clue. Loose teeth that are shifting can also indicate a periodontitis, but not always. Orthodontic work, stress, injury, pregnancy, and diet can attribute to the shifting of teeth.

What is a Periodontist

A periodontistis a gum specialist whose main job is to control the "foundation" of the teeth. They can also treat other conditions such as receding gums and replacing missing teeth with dental implants. Periodontists in the USA are required to achieve a Bachelor's degree in either pre-med or pre-dentistry from an accreted school, a four year dental school degree, as well as undergo three years minimum of specialized training.

Non Surgical Options

In order to get the patient to better oral health, they must first undergo non surgical therapy called scaling and root planing. This is achieved in one of two ways. The old school method is similar to a normal cleaning but with the added step of getting the patient numb with anesthetic. The hygienist or Doctor can perform this procedure by getting below the gum line and "scraping" calcified bacteria of the patients' roots. After Care

You will return to the periodontist in four to six weeks following your scaling and root planning appointment. If you have stabilized, you will see your general dentist twice a year and your periodontist twice a year. In other words, you will have a cleaning every 3 months. This is important to maintain your periodontal health and decrease the chances of periodontitis returning. Sometimes your doctor will prescribe a mouth rinse to assist in killing the germs that caused the disease. Other times he will prescribe an antibiotic. If your condition has not improved, your doctor might suggest surgery, called Osseous Surgery.

What is Osseous Surgery?

When you've done all you can with scaling and root planning, the next step is Osseous surgery. It is not necessary in all cases, but if the situation does not improve, it can help. This surgery is considered Oral surgery and is usually preformed by a periodontitus or Oral surgeon. Osseous surgery's function is to make the pocket between the tooth and the gum shallower for the patient so they are better able to clean out food debris. Just like scaling and root planning, the patient is given antiseptic to get the area numb. Next, the doctor cuts along the gum line of the infected teeth making sure to keep with the couture of the teeth. He will, again, use the cavatron or scalars to debride the area of redundant and dead gum tissue and calcified bacteria. Sometimes he will cleanse the area with an antibiotic. The last step is to shorten the gums by removing a millimeter or so of tissue before suturing the patient's gums back around their teeth. Conclusion A trip to a Periodontist can be a scary event to most people. You can spend up to two hours in the chair being worked on. Procedures ranging from $200 to $2,000 a visit can be costly. Most of what you read here is preventable! You should not deprive yourself of a healthy mouth by simple being neglectful.
