~ Making New (Old) Friends ~

(Prompt: Eating Ice Cream)

"Oh! There's ice cream up ahead! Let's buy some!" Leah enthusiastically pointed to the stall she had spotted not too far away on the promenade and quickly pulled Robbie along with her. The Scotsman had no choice but to go with her.

"Well, who have we got here? Robert Scott, I haven't seen ye for ages. And in such pretty company, too, I see. Hello there, miss." The old ice cream seller greeted the two customers with a broad smile and Robbie had to smile too.

"Hello, sir."

"Hey, Mr. McDuff. I didn't think ye were still running this ice cream stand. Ye were on the verge of retirement years ago, weren't ye?"

The ice cream vendor just shrugged his shoulders.

"Ye cannae just give up a project close to yer heart like that, lad. I love selling ice cream. And I want to do it for the rest of me life. So, who did ye bring me here?" Once again, McDuff looked at Leah, who held out her hand with a smile.

"Leah McCoy. I'm Robbie's girlfriend."

Immediately, Robbie blushed. Leah was just always so direct.

"Ah, I see." McDuff nodded understandingly and shook Leah's hand before looking to Robbie. "Ye really made a good choice there."

"Aye." The younger Scotsman nodded and his dreamy gaze traveled to his girlfriend. "Aye. I did."

"So, what can I do for ye two bonnies?" McDuff gestured with outstretched arms at his relatively small selection of ice cream.

"Oh, um ... I'd like a scoop of vanilla and ... a scoop of pistachio."

Robbie always found it admirable how quickly Leah could decide on something. She was just so strong-willed.

"Alright, lass. Here ye go."

Leah gratefully accepted her ice cream and McDuff turned to Robbie. Luckily, he had always gone to this ice cream stand and the vendor knew him all too well.

"And the usual for ye, I suppose? Strawberry and chocolate?"

Robbie nodded.

"Same as always."

They talked to McDuff for a while about how Robbie had gone to America and met Leah there before the couple continued their walk.

"A really nice gentleman," said the nurse.

"Oh, aye, he is. I've always loved going here."

Robbie remembered many wonderful summers he had spent at the beach. Mr. McDuff had been part of those memories for so long.

"And the ice cream tastes awesome! We really must go there again while we are staying here."

Robbie chuckled.

"I think that can be arranged."

They exchanged a look and suddenly Leah laughed. Robbie felt his cheeks grow hot.

"What? Why are ye laughing?"

"You've got some ice on your face." Leah pointed to a spot near Robbie's lips and quickly he tried to wipe it away.

"No, no." Leah shook her head. "Not there. There."

When Robbie still didn't seem to catch the right spot, Leah gently pulled his hand away and leaned forward.

"Right there."

A long kiss followed and Robbie couldn't help but smile into it.

When Leah pulled her head back, Robbie raised an eyebrow questioningly.

"Was there really something? Or did ye just want to kiss me?"

Leah grinned mischievously and shrugged her shoulders.

"I guess you'll never know."

Well, in the end, it didn't matter, did it?

Going to a nice planet for shore leave was a very appreciated rare occurrence. One with a beach- that was even better.

Scotty didn't like to take shore leaves very much considering he liked being aboard the Enterprise, but being on a beach was just too tempting to pass up. By the time the captain announced the shore leave, the engineer was packed and bolting down to the transporter room, dragging McCoy behind.

As they materialized on the planet's surface, the sun's warmth and the sound of waves greeted them. Scotty's eyes lit up at the sight of the expansive, sparkling ocean.

"Len, look at that! It's a beauty!" He exclaimed, his voice filled with childlike glee.

McCoy smiled, adjusting his sunglasses. "Yeah, yeah, Scotty. Go on, enjoy yourself. I'll be right here if you need me."

Without a second thought, Scotty dashed toward the water, shedding his shirt along the way, revealing the scales that were embedded into his skin. McCoy snorted to himself as he watched Scotty trip a bit in the sand, but that didn't stop him as he just kept on running until he got into the water. He watched as Scotty dove into the waves, his powerful strokes sending him farther out into the open sea. It was a rare sight to see the engineer so carefree, and McCoy couldn't help but smile at the sight.

Finding a comfortable spot under a large palm tree, McCoy settled in, taking a deep breath of the salty air. The shade provided a perfect refuge from the blazing sun, and the sound of the ocean was a soothing backdrop. He stretched out on a towel, closing his eyes and letting the gentle breeze lure him into a relaxed state.

The ocean and the sound of other crewmen having fun was a comforting backdrop. It felt great being able to relax, and the doctor quickly found himself growing a tad tired. Damn it all, he was getting older, and he was constantly being worked to the bone with helping people everyday. He deserved a good nap.

It didn't take long before the southern man was asleep, the rest of the crew making sure to not bother the man unless they wanted to get their head bit off.

McCoy groaned a bit to himself as he woke up from his mid-day cat nap. He went to rub his eyes, only for his hand to bonk into the sunglasses he forgot to take off. Huffing, he pushed them away as he sat up, stretching. He looked to his side, noticing the sight of his lover laid flat on his stomach in the sand beside him, but far away enough to where he was in the sun.

The doctor couldn't help but huff a bit with amusement before he got up from his resting place, and made his way to Scotty.

"Darlin, you're gonna roast out here.” McCoy said as he reached Scotty, who was half-buried in the sand, looking more content than a cat in a sunbeam. The sea monster didn't reply, but his tail started to wag, so he was definitely listening. The doctor just rolled his eyes before squatting down and running his hands along the sea monster’s scaled back- the scales soaking in the sun. “Damn, you're warm.”

Scotty’s tail wagged more, moving some of the sand around. He let out a loud purr, shuffling a bit in the sand to show his contentment.

“C’mon, we can't have you getting sunburned.”

The sea monster merely grumbled in response, his eyes half-lidded and tail still wagging. He was too comfortable and content to form words. The doctor didn't want Scotty to get burnt, but clearly he wasn't worried, so maybe he shouldn't be worrying either.

“Fine, you overgrown lizard.” McCoy moved to run his hand through Scotty's hair, but not for long as the sea monster engineer let out a big yawn, rolling over onto his back. The doctor watched with a smile, which only widened when he saw Scotty look at him with sleepy eyes. He purred loudly, tilting his head back (surely getting sand in his hair), and stretching his legs out.

The southern man already knew this routine. He didn't desiste to reach over, gently patting Scotty’s soft abdomen, watching as the monster’s tail started to wag even faster. McCoy couldn't help but snicker as he continued to rub Scotty, watching as he was soaking up all the affection. “You're lucky I love you, fish brain.”

~ Promise Under The Stars ~

(Prompt: Stargazing)

Robbie let out a contented sigh as he looked up at the many beautiful stars in the dark night sky. It was a cloudless night and you could actually make out some images.

"And there's the Big Dipper up ahead, ye see?" The Scotsman raised an arm and pointed to one of the many constellations.

"Oh, that's right! I can see it now! You really know your way around the stars."

Robbie chuckled softly and used his arm to pull Leah a little closer to him.

"Aye, well, I've always been fascinated by the stars. Monty and I always wanted to travel to them when we were kids and he followed that dream."

The Scotsman's smile turned a little melancholy. Sometimes he wished that he too could work on a spaceship. Far away from Earth, exploring foreign worlds. It had always been a wonderful dream.

"Why didn't you do it? Why didn't you become an engineer on a ship too?"

Robbie felt Leah's questioning gaze on him, but didn't take his eyes off the stars. He sighed.

"I married early and became a father just as early. I never had time to live out that dream. And even though I sometimes wonder how it could have been, I'm still very happy. I have raised a great son and he will fly to the stars for me because he has inherited this dream. And I ..." Robbie fell silent before moving his head to the side and looking into Leah's face. "I've found a new dream."

Gently, the engineer pressed a kiss to Leah's forehead and she smiled.

"I'm really glad you stayed on Earth and came to San Francisco. It was the only way I could get to know you. It was the only way I could learn what true love is. It was the only way I could find the man who really makes me happy."

Robbie felt a lump of excitement swell in his throat. His heart was beating like crazy. He didn't know why this one thought suddenly popped into his head and yet it felt so incredibly right. If not now, then when ...

"Marry me."

The words were out of his mouth before he could even think about them again. And when they were spoken, Robbie blushed instantly.

Leah's eyes widened and she blinked. First once, then twice.

"Robbie–"

"Ye are the most wonderful woman I have ever met. Ye make me laugh. Ye show me that I am worthy of being loved. When I'm with ye, I feel safe and happy. And that's why I want ye to stay by my side forever."

It took a moment before Leah reached out and placed her hand on Robbie's cheek. She gently stroked the soft skin with her thumb.

"Robbie, I would love nothing more than to be your wife, but ... are you really sure? You've been married before and it wasn't pretty."

The Scotsman shook his head.

"But it will be different with ye! I ken that ye love me. Ye'll never hurt me the way she once did. I was young and stupid back then. But this time everything is different. This time I know it's going to be just fine. With ye."

And when Leah finally nodded and their lips touched, Robbie's heart leapt with happiness. Leah McCoy, the most wonderful woman in the whole universe, was his and he was hers. And soon enough everyone would see it.
