Kafka and Hamlet (Essay)
Franz Kafka
I once came across a fragment of Kafka's writing and writing by the philosopher Wittgenstein almost simultaneously(Both are German-speaking people.), and compared them. Kafka's sentences were incoherent, and I could only read that his consciousness was clouded. On the other hand, Wittgenstein's writings were logically clear and conveyed the purity of his mind.
When I thought about what this big difference was, I concluded that it came down to the difference in the qualities of the two men. To begin with, isn't Kafka, a literary figure, overrated? His famous unfinished posthumous work ``The Castle: Das Schloss'' is famous because the story does not progress at all. No matter how many hundreds of pages you spend, the situation surrounding the main character remains the same. Reading works like this is a waste of time. Kafka's readers are masochists. It's better to read the manga.
Shakespeare's ``Hamlet'' comes to mind when we think of ``The Castle.'' In the case of this work, the main character, Hamlet, is indecisive and should immediately take revenge on his uncle who killed his father and usurped the throne. Still, he pretends to impose a moratorium and procrastinates, causing his lover to commit suicide. Almost all of them died, with comical results. I think "Hamlet" is a bad work.
In the case of ``The Castle,'' the story does not progress due to Kafka's intentions, whereas in ``Hamlet,'' due to the main character. The difference is that the story does not move forward due to hesitation, but both works do little more than appeal to the sickly modern spirit of modern people who are either indecisive or are forced into indecision. They look very similar. These are works that are not food for a healthy mind.

The word "motivated" does not have a precise scientific or academic definition. While primarily used in psychology, its definition remains subject to various interpretations, essentially serving as an empty signifier.
However, in contemporary society, being motivated is portrayed as having heightened awareness and aspiring to a better lifestyle. It is presented as a goal that everyone should strive for. In the present era, affluence is regarded as a virtue, and people relentlessly pursue good homes, clothing, cars, and food—an attitude reflective of the ceaseless growth ethos of capitalism. Within such a mindset, practices for better health and longevity are also pursued. Beyond this lies a realm of non-scientific methods and baseless popular beliefs. Additionally, being motivated is highly demanded in our daily lives. Socially, being a productive individual is pervasive as an absolute value, and a lack of productivity, in other words, being "amotivated," is considered a social detriment. In the dichotomy of these notions, being "motivated" can be seen as a somewhat coercive thought, and it attempts to masquerade as a universal value.
Yet, fundamentally, there is nothing suspicious about being motivated. In the realm of art, while the creation of artwork may start with inspiration, it is motivation that keeps it going. A certain sustained enthusiasm is maintained by intrinsic motivation, serving as the driving force to accomplish something.
The term "bodies" in the title of this exhibition does not merely refer to physical bodies but is used to signify an entire organization or conceptual entity. In this context, "motivated bodies" would translate to something like "entities with motivation." Moreover, the term "things" can also refer to the artwork itself. What is the motivation behind the artwork, and what role does the artwork, often perceived passively, play?
Through the perspectives of six artists in this exhibition, we will contemplate the origin of this motivation.

Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1996, currently residing in Tokyo. Graduated from the Oil Painting Department, Printmaking Major, of Musashino Art University's Faculty of Fine Arts in 2019. Exploring the theme of the conditions for the emergence of pictorial space, recent works assume the nested structure of layers of intention and unintentionality. By employing printmaking techniques and introducing otherness through the use of plates, the artist not only allows external elements to intervene but also incorporates viewers, at times, as elements of randomness within the artwork by entering the exhibition space.

HIROSHI WATANABE aka KAITO ( Transmat / Kompakt )
REMO-CON

EP.「AGAINST THE OVERDRIVE E.P.」
