So I'm twisting around ideas for how I'm going to salvage the "external threat" plot-line for Zaun Family after Season 2 went a different route for it's final villain and I think I have An Idea.

It's gonna be Ambessa (has to be).

Piltover realises that her interest might be more Conquering than Diplomatic in nature but even with the time they do have to try and build a defence she basically comes in and takes over with little effort.

But no matter what she does she cannot take Zaun. Partially because Silco hasn't stopped stockpiling weapons and his contingency plans for if the Representative deal falls through so they're very well armed to prevent an attempted Occupation. Partially because of the layout of Zaun being a nightmare for anyone unfamiliar and really good for gorilla warfare for those familiar with it. And Partially because There Be Monsters Down There (Silco's children + while Shimmer is more focused on medical use in this universe they didn't completely abandon the Makes People Monstrous element).

So while Zaun never Rallies Behind Piltover, Ambessa cannot say she managed to Take Piltover because she cannot get a hold of the Undercity. And because of the amount of physical connections between the two cities (especially secret ones that were old smuggling routes or just so old they're not on maps anymore but people in Zaun know about them) it means that she also cannot suppress the Piltover resistance because they've based themselves out of Zaun (and have some level of Zaunite support because while Zaun isn't going to Rally behind Piltover they also do want the Occupation Of Piltover to end).

I feel like Jayce still has to destroy the Hexgates but it's more to prevent Ambessa from bringing in more and more reinforcements (then the ending is more "we can rebuild them just need a way to stop that from happening again") and then Mel and Caitlyn still defeat Ambessa in combat so Mel takes over Ambessa's command and calls off the occupation.

I'm still rotating it in my mind (and still haven't watched the season to kidnap what I can) so this may be tweaked or completely changed.

Skarloey Appreciation Essay: Interpersonal Intelligence

I know that I still have several ficlet ideas to write, but instead, have an analysis. This one's about Skarloey, mostly because he's my absolute favorite, but also because there's a lot to say about him. This is primarily based off of the Railway Series and Model Series seasons 1-5, since they're what I'm most familiar with (although it's been a while since watching the show, so please pardon me if I miss anything from that perspective).

For this analysis, I want to briefly mention how the various sagely characters excel in different types of intelligence. Some know a lot about the world and are happy to share their knowledge (Edward), while others are highly experienced and have that experience to fall back on when trying to guide and help others (Toby). However, out of all of them, I would argue that it's Skarloey who has the best interpersonal intelligence, in that he's great at creating healthy relationships between himself and others, and by extension, maintaining a measure of relative peace on his railway.

Interpersonal intelligence is defined as "the ability to understand and interact effectively with others. It involves effective verbal and nonverbal communication, the ability to note distinctions among others, sensitivity to the moods and temperaments of others, and the ability to entertain multiple perspectives" (University of Tennessee).

To start, I'd like to give some examples of how Skarloey is good at this. Skarloey is a "do no harm, but take no shit" kind of character. When done well, this kind of character tends to be highly compelling. (In fact, Toby could also be classified in this way, albeit differently flavored.) Some Skarloey-specific examples include:

-Skarloey scolding the coaches after they sabotage Sir Handel (Old Faithful). Skarloey essentially scolds them for endangering the passengers, and when they try to blame Sir Handel, Skarloey's not having it. What's particularly notable is that he doesn't take sides here; he doesn't validate the coaches' feelings nor does he defend Sir Handel. Instead, he focuses on their professionalism, and the coaches really don't have anything to say in their defence.

-Building on the previous point, this whole event, especially with Skarloey pushing himself on the passengers' behalf, resonates with Sir Handel. It ends with Sir Handel thinking that "Skarloey is the best engine in the world," which is high praise coming from an engine that referred to Skarloey as "rubbish" in his debut (Sir Handel). It's almost a shame that Skarloey left for six years to be mended, as if he'd stayed, a number of Sir Handel's more overbearing qualities might have been ironed out sooner.

-Skarloey's own character growth is also on full display in terms of the way he treats others. The worst comeback he actually has in the RWS, toward anybody, is when he says to Sir Handel that all respectable engines want to work, and then immediately follows that up with advice for Peter Sam (Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady). Every other time another engine says something rude or ridiculous, Skarloey says nothing and winks at some other engine, or keeps it to himself ("Rusty told Duncan about the bad bit of line, and warned him to be careful. 'Huh!' he grunted, 'I know my way about, thank you! I don't need smelly Diesels to tell me what to do.' Rusty looked hurt. 'Never mind,' said Skarloey, 'you've done your best.' He said no more, but he thought a great deal.") (Rock n' Roll). He's come a long way from the hot-tempered engine who threw petty insults at Rheneas (Stick-in-the-Mud).

-Skarloey delivers lessons in ways that aren't just "you shouldn't do this because I said so." This way of giving advice to headstrong engines often gets ignored, as seen when other sagely engines try it. Instead, he takes a more cunning approach, as seen by his tactic of goading Sir Handel into facing off against George (Steam-roller). There are other engines who are cunning, certainly (just look at Donald and Douglas, or some key Thomas moments), but they don't really try to pit other engines against each other. The only other one who does in a notable way is Diesel, and he's not really protagonist material for most of the series.

In this case, the other engines (let's be real, it's Peter Sam and Duncan) are fed up with Sir Handel's boasting, so they tease him. However, he just shrugs them off. By contrast, Skarloey recognizes that trying to be straightforward won't work, so he decides to appeal to Sir Handel's pride in the hopes that he and George might teach each other a lesson. It's a strategy that ends up working exceedingly well, and also doesn't undermine his standing with Sir Handel himself. Honestly, Skarloey can be a little bit devious and that's such a fun character trait (it shows up again when Skarloey just doesn't tell the others that Culdee's Godred story is made up (Bad Look-out), choosing to let them stew and perhaps be a little more mindful of their behavior, and those moments are some of my favorites).

-Skarloey earnestly compliments others when they do well. He's incredibly grateful to Rusty for fixing the track, and tells him so. He speaks earnestly about Rheneas, and compliments Culdee upon hearing about his railway. Not a lot of other characters do this unless under duress or when they feel bad for taking things too far! In fact, tying into this point is that Skarloey doesn't kick others when they're down (see above), and stops the other engines' teasing when it gets out of hand (Peter Sam and the Prickly Problem).

There are certainly other examples of Skarloey's excellent character (one of my favorite character traits of his is how he owns up to his mistakes and even talks about them as proof of how he's grown instead of trying to hide shameful moments from his past, making him more relatable), but I'll instead pivot to why he's my go-to for a shining star of interpersonal intelligence by comparing him to some of the fandom's other favorite sages.

-Edward is probably the most wholesome character in the whole series. He's kind, he's giving, he doesn't complain, and you just want the best for him. However, he's also been worn down by life to an extent. His coworkers are often rude to him for no reason, even while they begrudgingly respect him, and unlike Skarloey, who is undoubtedly the moodmaker on his railway, Edward simply isn't; Gordon is. While I feel bad that Edward is treated this way, I also can't help but wish that Edward would have stood up for himself and others more, particularly in the early days when the railway's culture was still being figured out, because everyone on the NWR always has something to prove. It's super fulfilling when Edward proves his worth and shows that not only is he still useful, but that he has an unmatched will. However, while letting his actions speak for themselves is great, all he's really done is prove that he too can still run with the young'uns. He's earned their respect in terms of his abilities, but not their respect for his authority as an experienced engine with good advice to give, or their respect as an equal, really. He's a coworker who's shown that he can handle his work, but his opinion doesn't hold as much weight as theirs.

Perhaps part of this is that Gordon is a physically larger engine with an ego to match (after all, size DOES matter in the inherent engine pecking order, and the Skarloey Railway engines are all the same size so that's much less of an issue). Perhaps it's that Edward simply isn't confrontational, and would rather just let a lot of this slide. Perhaps another part of it is that the NWR just has so many more engines now and without that groundwork, it's very unlikely that the railway's culture can be changed at this point without a lot of effort from multiple engines. However, everybody constantly picking at each other's old wounds and feeling defensive all the time does not lend itself to a kind railway. Edward just doesn't stop that nonsense in its tracks the way Skarloey does, and he doesn't really come to the defense of some of the smaller engines. He moreso manages the fallout and is a counselor for the others, reactive but not necessarily proactive. Edward is a kind, nice character, and I absolutely adore that about him, but he often comes across as just rolling with the punches or being a shoulder to cry on for the others instead of taking a proactive role in setting the other engines straight. (To be fair, what he needed most was James or Henry having a character arc that would let them get out of the shadows of their inferiority to Gordon or their own selves/circumstances and back Edward up more often so that people actually heeded and respected his advice, but that's hardly Edward's fault.)

-Toby, on the other hand, takes no shit from anybody and will bite you if you give him grief. That's also a great character trait, but it has the side-effect of making him difficult to get along with. He's filled with great advice, but the other, haughtier engines don't want to listen so Toby doesn't want to give it; he's happy to watch them fail abysmally and come crawling back. I absolutely love Toby as a character, but these kinds of people are rather difficult to get along with in real life. I find that Toby and Duck are particularly similar in this regard; they don't take shit from the other engines, but come off as more prickly for it. Everyone except their closest friends are coworkers at best, and so they also don't necessarily improve the vibes of the railway as a whole. Toby and Edward are two ends of the spectrum, two extremes in this regard.

Thus, to me at least, it's Skarloey who wins out in terms of being the most interpersonally intelligent sage character, who makes his railway a good place to be for everybody on it. He uses a couple of different strategies to help other engines see sense, whether it's being straightforward with them, using a story as an example, or cajoling them a little bit. He scolds others when necessary, but doesn't use their shame as ammunition and doesn't tear them down. People may not like the story "Pop" Special because it makes Duncan seem too nice, but I like it in the sense that it shows how decades of being around people who are good to you and treat you well can lead to an insular, angry person becoming kinder and more thoughtful. Who made that the culture on the railway and enforced it? Skarloey.

Like I said at the start, this analysis is limited to the Railway Series and Model Series seasons 1-5, so I'd love to hear others' opinions on what I've put forth here. I hope you enjoyed; ficlets to come soon(-ish)!

A longer one, at 4 chapters and nearly 10k words. Very grim and dramatic, with a bittersweet conclusion. I remember Gwen being fairly prominent in this, stuck in a difficult position as Merlin’s friend and Arthur’s wife while the two are at odds. TWs in fic tags.

yeah my bad, honestly forgot that he was half asian (I have not interacted w the show or fandom in a while, so thats on me tbh), but I definitely agree with your input. I know that Callum is the main character, so he’s going to get more love and attention, same as Rayla, especially since Rayllum is the main couple (not dissing on them or the ship ofc) but it really upsets me when I look for art/fics of Ezran he’s either A) with Callum or B) in the background of something Rayllum related and in fics i rarely ever see solo fics of just him, he’s either in the background of rayllum or being their therapist or something like that

TDP has done a good job when it comes to portraying their characters of color, and its nice to see POC in positions of power for once (Harrow, Ez, Janai, Anaya, Kasef, etc), I just wish that the fandom as a whole would do the same thing yknow?

Omg you're all good! That's actually why I've run two Ezran Appreciation Weeks (although I still need to finish my fics for the second one, but life got unexpectedly super busy) and why I use the tag Ezran centric for fics that well, focus primarily on him and his relationships, rather than him being in a supportive or background role. I still wanna write a fic about him and Janai (maybe I can work it into a speculative S5 piece, since it seems like maybe we'll get to see them on screen together, and they had a Lot of parallels in S4).

But yeah there are definitely people in the fandom who aren't open to critique in how they treat Ezran. I once pointed out that hey, most of the time when his character is incorrectly tagged in a post, it's almost always in relation to his brother. Did not go over well, but I don't really care. It was still worth saying (and hopefully people will think a bit more thoughtfully about it too).

We could definitely all do more; I do my best to put dents in it when I can, but with varying degrees of success I'm sure

thank you, my darling! that overjoys me to hear. primarily i'm focused on what i've got marked on my WIP list. having just finished Hide and Seek, i'm looking to get ch4 of Eat Your Ego out next, and then either Last Resort or Center Stage in a Gilded Cage are next. they're both kidnapping/yandere fics, but with VERY different vibes. Last Resort a slow build from paradise into horror, while Center Stage is a lot more focused on building the dynamic between Homelander and this person he's formed a very imaginary connection with, and what the actual reality their relationship grows into. these are all longer works though, and i like to take little breaks in between to write little ficlets or random prompts and things from my ask box. 🖤

Former casteless turned Paragon of Orzammar, Arlessa of Amaranthine, and Noble head (in absentia) of House Natia, Natia is my one and only warden.  22 years old during the Fifth Blight, she has spent the intervening decade annoying Grey Warden leadership by breaking their rules, visiting Orzammar, developing new lines of commerce from the Surface to Orzammar by aligning her House with Sarana Aeducan, and granting time off to go on adventures with her fiercely beloved husband, Alistair Brosca (nee Theirin).  (Individual post upcoming)

24 years old when her family fled from the Darkspawn, Marian is the calmest and most focused of the Hawke family; she also changed the most over her years in Kirkwall.  Already suffering from the deaths of her brother, mother, and elderly mabari, Mariana was also abandoned by Isabella before her duel with the Arishock.  Her greatest regret, however, is executing her friend in a failed bid for peace.  She lives with that guilt with the help of Fenris, her partner in life and in hunting down slavers; she manages destruction of the supply lines and he handles more of the hands-on work.  She works hard to maintain contact among her surviving family, both Bethany and her found family.  (individual post upcoming)

Distrustful and dismissive of humans and their Chantry for good reason, Elayn deeply resents being the “Herald of Andraste,” but sees it as the only way to help his people moving forward.  The child of a powerful mage, Elayn was expected to be a Keeper one day, but no magic manifested.  Despite this, he is an expert on Dalish and elvish lore and history.  He trained with a group of Vashoth on good terms with his clan, and is unusually square and muscular for an elf.  It takes him a long time to warm up to the Inquisition; he finds himself unexpectedly helped along by the nature of his deepening relationship with the Iron Bull.  (Individual post upcoming, ficlet here)

41 years old in 9:41 Dragon, Mahliel was given to the Carta at the age of 8, where she was trained as a deadly assassin.  She just..didn’t mention this until after the revelation of Warden Blackwall’s true identity, since Josephine seemed happier believing she just protected caravans of illicent goods (and because she was secretly working to leave the Carta at the time of the Conclave). Mahliel is extremely intelligent, having a strong understanding in a wide variety of fields.  Despite her typically rational outlook, she is a strong believer in second chances, sometimes to her own detriment.  It has worked out well for her and Thom Rainier in the long run, however.  (individual post here; ficlet here)

In a dark and uncertain world, Jury Adaar is a ray of sunshine.  Prominently scarred on her right side from her first use of magic - an overpowering show of lightning that left her with permanent Lichtenberg figures- Jury is the daughter of an escaped qunari mage and his handler.  The nearly-uncontrollable level of her power is a sign of her Vashoth heritage.  As a follower of her own interpretation of Andraste, she was much happier as a small-group leader in Haven; being the Inquisitor can be overwhelming.  Jury sees the best in her companions, and works to make sure they see that in themselves as well.  She fell crazy hard for the Inquisition’s Ambassador while seeking advice from Josie on international relations.  (individual post upcoming, ficlet upcoming)

The @femfirmative-johnlock blog (https://femfirmative-johnlock.tumblr.com/) has got me thinking about how I write women, specifically in my Johnlock fics. This is Part One; Part Two, which focuses on my Johnlock fics only, should follow in the next few days (assuming my temp move from VA back to Chicago goes smoothly)

Now, I really like all the women characters in Sherlock the show - despite serious missteps by the writers for most of them, I find them pretty rich and rewarding to explore. Yet I’ve written so many Johnlock stories where they barely appear at all. I do feel this is balanced out by the fact that I write a lot of poly/OT3/threesome fic where women are very present and strong, and I’ve also written femslash (I sail the tiny but fierce gunboat Marene), and I’m also one of the mods of the Get Mrs Hudson Laid blog and AO3 collection.

In this one she seeks out kink therapy for her anger at herself over this. She can be abject and vulnerable with Irene in a way she couldn’t let herself with a man, I think. Surprise guest appearance by one of Irene’s other clients, at the end. :)

Venus Infers (Irene/Mary) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/7872085) Voluntary servitude, boot worship. In these stories and also in Firebird, I’ve written Mary taking the sub role, which I don’t see very often (especially with Sherlock as dom, as in Firebird.) (With varying degrees of defiant; she’s far more so with Sherlock than with Irene) I see Mary being really good at this if she chooses to do it, and it requires remarkable people and circumstances for her to make that choice. I don’t see her as someone who carries around a lot of guilt - but I definitely see her enjoying a good sacrificial purge once in a while. She’s somebody who appreciates the services of a Sin Eater. This story is set in an AU I have in my head, where Irene and Mary are a dashing jewel-thief duo like a kinky lesbian Raffles & Bunny, and it’s deliberately written as a heavy-handed homage to E.W. Hornung’s “The Ides of March.”

OK, I really have to classify this as ���other” because it’s a Tolkien fusion fic where they live in Middle-earth AND ARE GIANT EAGLES. Everything about this fraught sibling relationship is filtered through being giant, somewhat magical predatory birds. (And frankly I think it makes their motives make more sense.)

Stelena fanfiction recommendations

A list of fic recs has been requested a few times over at my sideblog (hellyeahstelena), so here it is. 

All stories are written in English. 

All stories are complete. 

Each story has the rating, word count, genre, summary and a little personal summary from myself. 

Most of them are years old and set during the early seasons, but unfortunately, there are very few Stelena fanfiction writers that are still writing. 

There are a lot of one-shots since there aren’t many long/multi-chapter stories out there that are actually complete.

I’d recommend checking out this post, which is probably the most comprehensible list of Stelena fic rec’s I’ve come across. I could’ve included a lot more fics on this list, but most of them are already listed on the above list, so go check it out. It includes some of the best Stelena fic’s/writers out there. 

A Dream and a Prayer - StelenaIsMySunshine

“Elena’s vivid hallucination/dream reveals the nature of her deepest desires… A bittersweet Stelena one shot.”

Set around the time of 5x16 when Elena was infected with the Ripper virus and hallucinating. Mostly smut, and as the summary says, this is pretty bittersweet, meaning, there’s no happy ending to be found here.

Just a simple fluffy one-shot of Stelena enjoying quality time together during the summer and getting caught up in their passion and love for one another.

Pretty emotion-heavy one-shot whereby a vulnerable and sad Elena takes comfort from Stefan. Very sweet and romantic.

Bonded For Life -  ICURAQT2 

“Alt S4 cont’d unsired! Please review! Original premise: Here’s what might be happening in Mystic Falls post 409. Inspired by Stefan finding out about certain DE shenanigans and a vision of what it might be like when the sire bond can truly be broken…because I don’t think what Damon told Elena to do at the end of 409 truly did enough to break it.”

A multi-chapter story (39 chapters to be exact) which is an alternate take on season 4. A lot of angst and drama. Be warned, this ends on a cliffhanger.

An alternate take on the end scene of 1x19. After Elena tries to stab Stefan with the vervain dart, things get heated and one thing leads to another. Basically just shameless smut.

Hold My Hand - electricsymphony

This is an OOC AU where Stefan teaches a newly turned vampire Elena to feed. Has a very Datherine vibe.

Set during the porch scene at the end of 4x04 where Elena returns home to Stefan after learning how to feed with Damon. A vulnerable and sad Elena leans on Stefan for comfort which inevitably turns into a passionate and steamy encounter. 

I’ll Be Home For Christmas - chinocoop81

“It’s Christmas, and Elena realizes where home has been all along. Stelena. Slight spoilers for 4x09. One shot.” 

Rating: T  ||  Words: 2,497 || Genre: Angst

Set immediately after 4x09, Elena realises she made a mistake and leaves Damon at the lakehouse to go and find Stefan to make things right. Starts out pretty angsty, but has a happy ending. 

Let The Right One In - Moonlit Tides

“With the recent discovery of the sire-bond and the revelation of the cure looming, Elena, Stefan and Damon are forced to question their relationships and are faced with their greatest challenge yet, as they embark on a journey that could potentially change their lives forever. Re-write for season 4, with focus on the triangle (Stelena endgame).”

Rating: M || Words: 249,888 || Genre: Angst/Smut/Everything

This is my story (I know I’m so narcissistic including my own on here, my bad) and the longest one I’ve ever wrote. It includes the full ensemble cast and really does have a bit of everything, but particularly lots of drama. Not one for those that are extremely anti-Delena since there’s focus on the triangle. Lots of Stelena angst (there’s even a mini AU sprinkled in there for that bit of fluff) and does contain smut.

Never Again - NeuroticFiction

“What I hope will happen during Stefan and Elena dancing in 4x19. Elena thought she had everything turned off for good, but are her feelings for Stefan stronger than no humanity? Stelena oneshot.” 

Rating: T || Words: 1,617 || Genre: Angst

Set in 4x19, Elena’s dance with Stefan leads to an awakening of her humanity. A short but satisfying take on something all Stelena shippers believe should’ve been canon. Angsty. 

Perfect Match - Vampire00Diaries

”Stefan and Elena are best friends in high school who are both secretly in love with each other. What happens when they have to pretend to be a couple? Will their romance rise, or will their friendship fall? AU fic. STELENA!” 

Rating: T || Words: 53,294 || Genre: AU

Very sweet story whereby Stefan and Elena have grown up together as best friends and slowly come to realise they’re in love. This is a great story if you want to just read about Stelena since 99% of it’s focus is on their relationship. Quite fluffy and romantic with occasional drama sprinkled in.

Snapshots of Me & You - HufflePuffPatronus

“A series of drabbles revolving around Stefan and Elena living the life that they deserve.” 

Rating: M || Words: 1302 || Genre: Fluff

This contains two drabbles focused on a future human Stelena. Short but sweet with lots of fluff. 

Tearing You Apart - electricsymphony

“Under the bright lights of the city of sin, thoughts get muddled, actions are severely impaired and inhibitions are reduced to nothing more than beads of sweat trickling down your body. An adorable drabble that showcases a very happy and in love Stelena. Basically just pure and utter fluff.

BePassionate024 - Has a tonne of Stelena stories of all kinds and although, there are occasionally spelling/grammar mistakes within her writing, she is very creative with her ideas/stories and great at capturing the essence of Stelena. 

Future Memory - One of my favourite Stelena writers. I’d reccommend all of her stories, but particularly her more recent ones as her writing has improved vastly from her first stories.

zalrb - Her writing style is fantastic and I’d recommend reading any/all of her fanfictions. Most of them do contain smut, so a warning for those of you that don’t like it. You can also find her FF account here, but she primarily shares her stories on her Tumblr blog.
