1960 Edsel Deluxe Hardtop
This Day in Auto History
6.7.1954
The Ford Motor Company formed a styling team to take on the project of designing an entirely new car that would later be named the Edsel. The decision came as Ford enjoyed its greatest historical success in the 1950s. The 1955 Thunderbird had outsold its Chevy counterpart, the Corvette, and the consumer demand for automobiles, in all price brackets, was steadily increasing. The Ford Motor Company consisted of four brand names: Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, and Continental, listed from lowest to highest in price range. Ford executives believed that there was a gap in the marketplace between the Mercury and the Lincoln, where a new car would compete against GM's Oldsmobile and Buick lines. In the mid-1950s, Americans seemed to have an insatiable hunger for high horse-powered, heavily styled cars, with lots of chrome and many accessories. So Ford planned to fill the public's appetite with a suitable answer. The company spared no expense in the development of its new car, even going so far as to employ famous American poet Marianne Moore to supply possibilities for its name. After an extensive name search and no satisfactory result, somebody suggested that the car be named after Henry Ford II's father, Edsel. Ford balked at the suggestion initially and later relented, on the grounds that his father deserved a tribute; he urged the car's designers to live up to his father's name. Edsel had always had a knack for design, even if his business sense hadn't always lived up to his father's expectations. The Edsel project was launched with great fanfare and vigorous advertising. During the years between the car's conception and its production, the American economy took a downturn. By the time the Edsel was released in 1957, the high end of the car market had once again contracted. Public reaction to the car's exaggerated styling was tepid at best, with particular objections aimed at the Edsel's awkward-looking "horse collar" grill. Sales for the car started slowly and foundered. Newly appointed company Vice President Robert McNamara was charged with the task of salvaging the operation. Had McNamara held the position years earlier, historians point out, the Edsel project may never have been taken on, as McNamara strongly believed Ford should concentrate on the economy car market. McNamara attempted to improve the car's construction and appearance, but when the attempt failed, he was forced to halt production of the car at a disastrous loss of $250 million. To this day, the Edsel remains the biggest failure in American car history, "a monumental disaster created for tomorrow's markets created by yesterday's statistical inputs." History has treated the Edsel more kindly, as its looks are now considered to be an attractive example of 1950s flair. Like its namesake, Edsel Ford, the Edsel has come to be known as an unfair victim of circumstance.
This 1960 Edsel Deluxe Hardtop was photographed at Das Awkscht Fescht at Macungie Park in 2022.

This Day In Music Sept 15 1965 - First Automotive 8-Track Player
The Ford Motor Company became the first automaker to offer an 8-track tape player as an option for their entire line of vehicles on sale in the US. Tapes were initially only available at auto parts stores, as home 8-track equipment was still a year away.

Ford Vedette, 1948. Another new car for the 1948 Paris Motor Show, made by Ford’s French subsidiary Ford SAF. The Vedette had originally been conceived by Edsel Ford and Ford designer Eugene T. "Bob" Gregorie as a “light” Ford model for the US market. However as Ford plans developed during the 1940s the “light” model had become superfluous so was given to the French instead. It was powered by a Poissy-made 2158 cc Aquillon sidevalve V8 engine of Ford's Flathead engine family. Ford SAF never achieved satisfactory sales and their Poissy plant also suffered industrial unrest which led to Ford selling their factory and model range to French car maker Simca in 1954.

Is Princess Kate a bit spoilt? She kinda has to be, right? Do she and Anthony clash over that, even after they are properly together?
I think she is, yeah. She’s grown up with the best of everything and it’s not really a secret that she has her Appa (you know, the king of the entire country) wrapped firmly around her pinky. She’s pretty well used to getting whatever she wants whenever she wants it. And I think sometimes that frustrates Anthony.
Because there are rarely any consequences to the things she does, not really. Not the way there are for normal people. Anthony’s family is fairly well off, they weren’t poor growing up but he definitely couldn’t afford to walk into a store and buy whatever he wanted. Unless that store was a Primark.
So it’s a little uncomfortable for him when they’re first officially together and he says he needs to get a new suit for an event they’re attending. He wants to look his best, because the public’s still very much getting used to the idea of them together and this is their first big event. A dinner for a charity Kate’s the chair of. He already feels self conscious about the fact that the nerves in his Left arm will never properly heal to give him any great motor function and now here he is, being greeted at the door of Tom Ford like he’s an old friend.
“Your Royal Highness.” The sales associate greets Kate with an awkward bow before turning to him, “Mr Bridgerton.”
It’s still odd to him, that he can stand beside Kate now, rather than three steps behind. That he can feel her fingers knotted with his as she takes off her sunglasses, her eyes flicking down to read the associate’s name tag with a smile.
“Carrie, it’s lovely to meet you. I wonder if you can help Anthony and me. We’re looking for a suit.”
“Of-of course.” Carrie said quickly ushering in my them over to the section, asking an under questions none of which Anthony is really listening too because he’s so busy wondering if he can afford this. And even if he could it dawns on him that it won’t be just this suit. It’ll never be just this suit. There’ll be hundreds more just like it that he’s expected to wear. When already felt uncomfortably out of place here with the sleeves rolled up on his rugby jersey and his slightly muddy sneakers squeaking against the floor.
“Anthony?” Kate caught his attention, her face frowning and he realised he had no idea what she was asking. “Are you alright, babe?”
Anthony nodded, swallowing. “Sorry, I- what was that?”
“I said I like the Royal blue, or the grey and white tweed sort of pattern. Though tweed’s not very traditional for this sort of thing.”
He wouldn’t have even known that. He glanced around, “Ah, I like the blue.”
They were ushered away into the kind of changing room that Anthony had spent the last few years waiting outside for Kate. One that’s not just a curtain and a partition. There’s champagne and a bonafide snack table, while a person flits around you, checking the fit of everything.
It’s a nice suit. Anthony even likes the way he feels in it, he likes the fact that the man in this suit looks like he belongs beside the woman sipping champagne on the sofa beside him, in the way the man wearing a Harlequins jersey his baby sister had bought him didn’t. But he still feels awkward and out of place as Carrie hums,
“Do you prefer a waistcoat?”
Anthony blinked at her, “I… didn’t when I was… when I usually wore a suit.” He stopped short of saying it wasn’t his uniform. Something everyone in the room must have known. And swallowed thickly, “I don’t know if I need one.”
He hated that he had to look to Kate who shook her head, “It’s not very formal. No waistcoat, no tie if you don’t want.”
He suddenly just wanted everyone else gone. He wanted to be alone to figure out how the hell he was supposed to get out of buying a £5500 suit. He swallowed, “I think the blue shirt’s too much. Could I try another few colours, please?”
Carrie nodded and left the room and Anthony stared at his reflection panic building in his chest.
Kate wrapped her arm around his waist and kissed his cheek, sighing, “Handsome.”
That wasn’t helping. That made him want to buy this and spend the next few months of his life living on tinned beans and cereal. Just to make her happy.
Anthony tried to smile, but it looked like a grimace when he caught sight of it in the mirror. “Thanks.”
Kate’s brow furrowed, “You don’t like it?”
“I… it’s a nice suit.”
“Do you want to try something else? Do you want to go somewhere else? We could try Dolce?”
Anthony nearly laughed, “Kate, honey, I can’t…” he bit it off, “I don’t want to trouble anyone.”
Kate chuckled, “It’s not any trouble.”
He sighed, leaning away from her touch, “Kate, I don’t want to go there because I can’t afford it. I can’t even really afford this suit.”
He’d thought her face would form the sort of uncomfortable expression people’s normally did when they discussed money but it didn’t. She raised her eyebrows in amusement and let out a chuckle, and somehow that was worse.
“You don’t have to pay for it. I am, well, Appa is.”
Anthony’s heart sank, and he didn’t want it to but something in him snapped. “No! He’s not!”
Kate frowned at him, “I… it’s really fine. He won’t… care. He won’t even notice.”
He knew Kate lived in a different world. Well, maybe that wasn’t fair, she was much less out of touch than some people much less wealthy when it came to so many things. But this seemed like something she hadn’t grasped yet. And maybe she never would. Money. When you had so much of it it seemed inconsequential. She hadn’t quite understood why Anthony had laughed when she said she’d bought herself a little treat and a goddamned Ferrari had been delivered the next day. She was used to getting what she wanted. To someone giving her what she wanted, and he would never be able to do that. And he hated it.
“Kate for God’s sake! Do you think this is what your father wants for you?! Do you think he wants you to be with someone like me who can’t even fucking tie their shoes properly anymore?!”
“Don’t talk about yourself like that.”
“Do you think he wants to clothe me as well?!” He hated how bitter it sounded, how sad. “You’re just so…”
“Spoilt.” She finished for him, her chin tilted in defiance, “That’s what you wanted to say right?”
Anthony clenched his jaw, “I… didn’t.”
She still hadn’t let go of his waist, and she pulled him closer. “I know this is uncomfortable for you. I know you… struggle with this but I love you. And I promise, Appa only wants me to be happy. I know I’m used to getting what I want, and I’m difficult but just… this doesn’t need to be difficult. If you don’t let me buy this for you it’ll show up at your house tomorrow anyway.”
Anthony sighed, leaning against her touch, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I just… I don’t know how to be this person. I like my stupid old sneakers and my rugby jersey and my jeans that cost £20. I don’t even know how to own a £6000 suit. It’ll get wrecked in my closet.”
Kate chuckled, “It comes with a suit bag, babe. And besides, you’re doing fine with that coat I gave you a few weeks ago.”
Anthony squawked, “You said it was on sale.”
Kate blinked at him innocently, “It was on sale.”
“I… what am I supposed to do with you?”
“I can think of quite a few things.” She ran her hands over his shoulders, “First you need to decide if this is the suit for you though.”
Anthony sighed looking at himself in the mirror, “I like it. The sleeves are a bit long though.”
She kissed his cheek again before she moved away and ducked her head out the door, “Carrie, we’d like to make a few adjustments to the tailoring if that’s alright.”

NASCAR Numerology: How NASCAR's Current Teams Got Their Numbers: Part Five.
Alright guys, we've gotten to the last part of this little miniseries.
Today we're covering:
Front Row Motorsports, who run the #34 Ford for Michael McDowell and the #38 for Todd Gilliland in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series.
Legacy Motor Club, who run the #42 Toyota for John Hunter Nemechek and the historic #43 for Erik Jones.
and JTG Daugherty Racing, who run the #47 Chevrolet for Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
Fittingly, we get to end on representation for all three brands.
Front Row Motorsports debuted in 2004, running the #92 Ford on a partial schedule with drivers like Brad Teague, Tony Raines, and Stanton Barrett, but they would fail to qualify for any races. Furthermore, the Mach 1 Motorsports team ran the #98/#96 car that year, splitting time between Ford and Dodge, and running drivers such as Todd and Geoff Bodine, Larry Gunselman, Derrike Cope, Chad Chaffin, and Randy LaJoie.
This team did manage to make some races (keyword: some) and in 2005, Mach 1 would attempt the full schedule with a #34 Chevrolet while another slew of drivers (mainly LaJoie, Chaffin, and PJ Jones) but by the end of 2005, the team was up for sale. Front Row Motorsports would buy this #34 car, as well as Mach 1's shop, and build their team around it.
Often running as a start-and-park team with a revolving door of drivers, Front Row finally got some stability in 2009, with John Andretti driving the #34, and dragging it up to three top twenty finishes, at Daytona, Loudon, and Fontana.
Andretti left after the 2010 Daytona 500, but the top twenty streak remained, with Travis Kvapil scoring an 18th at Talladega and Kevin Conway a 14th at the summer Daytona race.
David Gilliland (Todd's father) ran the full 2011 season and scored a third place at the Daytona 500, building on the results of the last three years to make Front Row Motorsports a proper contender on the superspeedways.
For 2012, Gilliland was moved to the #38 (more on that later) while David Ragan took over the #34. This car would top off FRM's superspeedway streak by winning the 2013 Aaron's 499 at Talladega.
Ragan would leave FRM after the 2015 Daytona 500 to get the opportunity to fill in for the injured Kyle Busch, so that season was a bit of a revolving door for the #34 yet again. Yet, for 2016, they got a technical alliance with Roush Fenway Racing in exchange for running Roush development driver Chris Buescher.
And Chris Buescher would win the 2016 Pennsylvania 400 for them on a Monday after a rainy weekend followed by a foggy weekend led to a segmented and ultimately shortened race. It took a bit of luck, but it got FRM its second win, and the first that wasn't on a superspeedway.
Chris Buescher went to JTG Daugherty of all places for 2017 (more on that later), so FRM hired Landon Cassill, without much success, before signing Michael McDowell for 2018.
McDowell has seen FRM become a legitimate team, winning the 2021 Daytona 500 and the 2023 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard at the IMS Road Course. Furthermore, in 2024, now in alliance with Team Penske, Front Row Motorsports is no longer an ironic name, as McDowell has started first or second multiple times this season, including at Daytona, Atlanta, and even Gateway, the latter two being pole positions.
Michael McDowell, however, will be moving to the Spire Motorsports #71 for 2025.
FRM has built their numbering scheme off of the #34, running other cars such as the #35, #37, and most commonly the #36, but its second full time car has been the #38.
Driven by David Gilliland from 2012-2015 and son Todd Gilliand ever since 2022, the car has also seen drives from Landon Cassill, David Ragan (in a return to FRM), John-Hunter Nemechek, Anthony Alfredo, and Zane Smith. With four top tens and a further ten top twenties, 2024 has thus far been the most successful season to date for the #38.
FRM will run a third full time car in 2025, having bought a charter from SHR, and has signed SHR's Noah Gragson, but it is unknown was number he will run. FRM ran the #36 this season for Kaz Grala, but Bob Jenkins says he's not married to this numbering scheme. Still, even numbers in the mid-30s are as close to consistent numbering as FRM has ever gotten, so I hope they do decide to stick with the #36.
Onto Legacy Motor Club.
First things first, this team is a Frankenstein's Monster mess of forgotten NASCAR teams in hilarious fashion. Petty Enterprises, officially ran from 1949 to 2008, when sponsorship could not be found, leading to the team merging with Gillett-Evernham Motorsports for 2009. Gillett-Evernham Motorsports consisted of Evernham Motorsports, the former Dodge factory team that ran the #9 and the #19, MBV Motorsports (which was essentially the #10 car owned by Valvoline at this point), and money from George Gillett, who was at the time the controversial owner of the Montreal Canadiens and Liverpool FC.
So already, you had the Petty #43, Petty #45, Evernham #9, Evernham #19, and Valvoline #10 merging into one team, but for 2010, they also bought Yates Racing to take over Paul Menard and his #98 Ford. This allowed the entire team to switch from Dodge to Ford.
So come 2010, the team is running the #9, #19, #43, and #98 with relics from three different numbering schemes remaining in the team. It's freaking awesome.
The #19 and #98 went away after 2010, leaving the team with the #9 and the #43.
The #9 was initially their most successful car, with Kasey Kahne winning Sonoma 2009 and Fall Atlanta 2009 with the team, before Australian Marcos Ambrose won Watkins Glen for the team in 2011 and 2012.
The #43 would, to its credit, with the 2014 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona with Aric Almirola, and it would become the team's only car after 2016.
After the 2021 season, GMS Racing, a truck team, bought into Petty, becoming Petty GMS. Ahead of the 2023 season, the team became Legacy Motor Club, with Jimmie Johnson buying in, Richard Petty chasing out, and Maury Gallagher of GMS becoming majority owner. Petty remained involved a spokesman for the team, however.
So, finally, onto their numbers. They run the #43 and have since practically the beginning of time, because that was Richard Petty's number? Why, well, that actually takes us to their second car, the #42, which was Lee Petty's number.
Why did Lee Petty pick the #42? Legend has it was the first two numbers in his license plate.
So, Lee Petty ran the #42, his son Richard ran the #43, Richard's son Kyle would eventually run the #44, and Kyle's son Adam would run the #45. Each generation building on the last. When Adam died, Kyle took over the #45 in his memory.
Thad Moffitt in the Truck series is a grandson of Richard Petty through Petty's youngest daughter Rebecca, and he continues this trend by running the #46.
In any case, when Petty GMS bought a second car in 2022, they chose to run the #42 - recently vacated by Chip Ganassi - reuniting the original two Petty numbers.
This arrangement continued as Petty became Legacy and eventually switched to Toyota for 2024. Currently the #43 is driven by Erik Jones, who won Darlington in it in 2022, and the #42 by John Hunter Nemechek.
Also, fun fact, Kyle Petty drove the #42 at Team SABCO (which would eventually become Chip Ganassi Racing) from 1989 to 1996, so it was a Petty number even when it wasn't.
And now JTG Daugherty Racing. It started in 2007, running a second car (#47) in alliance with the Wood Brothers. I cannot find any specific reason for the #47, only that Tad Geschickter ran a #47 Busch car ever since 1996, so maybe it was an availability thing. In any case, they ran the #47 and made their Cup debut in 2007, with Ken Schrader and Jon Wood each trying and failing to qualify for a race.
The #47 managed a few starts in 2008 with Marcos Ambrose, finishing third at the Glen, which prompted JTG to split with the Wood Brothers to try and go full time for the 2009 season with Ambrose in a #47 Toyota. This lasted two years before Mabrose moved to the aforementioned Richard Petty Motorsports, with JTG instead drafting in Bobby Labonte.
They would sign AJ Allmendinger in 2013 as Labonte began scaling back his races, and with AJ full time in 2014, they'd win at Watkins Glen. Allmendinger would last until 2018, when Ryan Preece was hired for that car, but then Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was chosen for 2020. Ricky would win the 2023 Daytona 500 with the team.
JTG Daugherty also briefly has a second car, the #37 - ten less than #47, also apparently Tad used this number in college sports - the #37 ran with Chris Buescher for 2017, 2018, and 2019, before running with Ryan Preece for 2020 and 2021.
This brings up another interesting aspect of JTG Daugherty Racing - despite the fact that they're a Chevy team, they kinda have this unique relationship with RFK Racing. First of all, Chris Buescher was a Roush development driver. Second of all, that #37 car for Buescher was run on the charter for Roush's #16.
Third, was that when Roush took Chris Buescher back for the 2020 season, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. then went the other way, going from the Roush #17 to the JTG Daugherty #47.
Oh, and as recently as 2023, JTG Daugherty's pit crew was on loan from Roush. Yeah, odd.
So yeah, that is all 36 chartered teams for the 2024 NASCAR Cup series and the story of a couple other numbers that are relevant to the story. I hope you guys enjoyed all that, but I think I'm gonna write about some other motorsports for a little while. The blog has been a bit NASCAR heavy lately and this week added a whole five extra blogposts to it.
I do enjoy blabbing on about NASCAR, but I also enjoy blabbing on about MotoGP and Indycar. Formula One is also a sport that exists.

Elsie Carson-Holt at LGBTQ Nation:
Though conservatives often accuse companies of losing out when a brand touts progressive values, the right-wing adage “go woke, and go broke,” has been disproven by a recent study. Brands that are supportive of LGBTQ+ rights or social justice movements see greater consumer engagement and loyalty from customers.  Unstereotype Alliance, a business initiative convened by UN Women, more inclusive advertising campaigns positively impact profits, sales and brand worth. Researchers at Saïd Business School at Oxford University analyzed data from Diageo, Kantar and Unilever, in collaboration with the Geena Davis Institute. The research, based on an analysis of 392 brands across 58 countries, reveals that inclusive advertising can boost short-term sales by nearly 3.5% and drive long-term sales by over 16%. The study spanned various product categories, including confectionery, snacks, personal care, beauty, pet food, pet care, alcohol, consumer healthcare, and household products across diverse regions. Inclusive advertising also persuades 62% of consumers to choose a product and enhances brand loyalty for 15% of shoppers. The study highlights that ads that authentically portray people, without using stereotypes, have a clear competitive advantage in the marketplace, influencing consumer preferences and long-term success.
[...]
On the other side, the beer brand Bud Light also faced right-wing rage after partnering with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney. After the incident,  Jason Warner, CEO of the European branch of Bud Light’s parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, said that the company would no longer attempt inclusivity and “stay in our lane.”
The study comes after right-wing influencer Robby Starbuck has forced multiple companies to cave by accusing them of having “woke agendas” and sending a social media mob after them. Starbuck succeeded in getting companies such as Lowe’s, John Deere, Harley Davidson, and more to drop their DEI initiatives, stop partnering with the Human Rights Campaign, and end sponsorship of Pride festivals. When fear of Starbuck caused Ford Motors to follow behind the other brands, President of the Human Rights Campaign, Kelley Robinson, called Starbuck a “MAGA bully and Republican-reject.” It later released a study that details how rollbacks on DEI from large corporations in recent years are wildly unpopular with LGBTQ+ individuals and alienating many consumers. The latest research adds even more weight to that argument.
A new study by Oxford University’s Saïd Business School and Geena Davis Institute reveals that pro-inclusive advertising and support for social justice (esp. LGBTQ+) causes see increased consumer engagement and loyalty from customers, much to the chagrin of anti-inclusion activists like Robby Starbuck.

🇺🇲 Explore the intriguing history of the Ford Edsel—a car that captivated the automotive world with its bold design and innovative features! Introduced in 1956, the Edsel was envisioned as a revolutionary addition to the American automobile market.
🎩 Edsel was a division and brand of automobiles that was produced by the Ford Motor Company. Named after Edsel Ford, the son of company founder Henry Ford, the Edsel was intended to fill the gap between Ford and Mercury, offering consumers a new level of luxury and sophistication. With its distinctive styling and advanced engineering, the Edsel was poised to make a splash in the competitive automotive landscape.
🚘 Despite high expectations and extensive marketing campaigns, the Ford Edsel faced numerous challenges upon its release. Its unconventional design, characterized by a unique grille and distinctive "horse collar" front bumper, divided opinion among consumers and critics alike.
⚙️ Under the hood, the Edsel boasted a range of powerful engines and innovative technologies, including the "Teletouch" automatic transmission and "E-475" V8 engine. However, production delays and quality control issues tarnished its reputation in the eyes of consumers, leading to disappointing sales figures.
💔 The launch of the Ford Edsel on "E-Day" in September 1957 remains one of the most highly anticipated events in automotive history. Despite the initial hype, the Edsel failed to resonate with buyers, leading to its discontinuation in 1960 after just three model years.
🌟 Although the Ford Edsel may not have achieved commercial success, it remains a fascinating chapter in the annals of automotive history, showcasing the risks and challenges inherent in innovation and design.

History is very important to the automobile industry. Despite being a relatively young field, it’s well-documented, and full of great tales. Most of those tales are about hubris. Flashy Italian guy smuggles cocaine to pay for a Volvo-engined stainless steel coupe. Economy-minded automaker builds engines out of aluminum and forgets how to finish bolting them together. Henry Ford’s race car driver runs over a bunch of people, quits racing, then returns to racing and runs over even more people.
By telling these stories, the auto industry likes to paint itself as a brash group of aggressive innovators. Bold risk-takers. Complete assholes. This is because the sales department is running things. In reality, cars are made by a series of professional engineers progressively refining an essential product that is meant for mass consumption. Your choices are “bald-faced sociopathic lies” or “fucking boring stories about reducing cabin vibration with a slightly different durometer of rubber on the upper motor mount.”
This is where the auto owners step in. Most of us have at least one great story relating to cars, whether it’s an old crap-can that just wouldn’t die, or a road trip born under a bad sign that eventually erupted into a sort of rain-soaked horror movie climax. And we tell each other these stories, in order to cement the mythic status of the automobile in our lives. Sure, we bitch about our houses, but nobody’s eyes well up when they think about the glorious time they cleared the P-trap on their kitchen sink and finally got that chunk of hair out of there. Not when they could be making engine noises with their mouths and pretending to shift gears in the middle of a drunken story about illegal drag-racing, spoken way too loudly at a dinner party.
Of course, most of these stories are also bullshit. We have a tendency to mythologize, and also wallpaper over our own failures of memory with a dream of what must have happened. For instance, I once told a story about using a frequently-misfiring 1978 Plymouth Volare to fend off multiple police officers on a highway chase, but it was a little bit inaccurate. It was actually a 1979 Volare, which if anything makes the story even more thrilling.

The morning’s farm activities include: milking the goats, carrying hay out to the horse, feeding the chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, etc. and collecting eggs, and tending the rabbits. Later on, gathering vegetables and flowers for market day, checking the fruit trees and associated beehives, tinkering with the tractor, preparing the baler for the last cutting of hay, etc., etc. All the familiar farm chores...only these are all being done in the heart of the City of Detroit, almost within sight of the smokestacks of the giant Ford complex. This farm is located on the converted playground of one of the city’s public schools, the Catherine Ferguson Academy (CFA).
And CFA is not the only farm in Detroit. By my count, there are now at least six micro-farms within the city limits ranging from about an acre to several acres. Even more important, there are now scores of productive community and school gardens, along with hundreds of family gardens, which are providing fresh fruits and vegetables for their neighborhoods and for sale at various farmers’ markets around town. And the urban farming movement is growing here faster each year, strengthening people with healthy produce, and re-energizing communities with shared planning, work, and celebration. It is becoming a movement of urban farmers worthy of linking up with the readers of Small Farmer’s Journal. But how did this movement come about?
Detroit, as everyone knows, was “The Motor City,” the auto capital of the world, home of the GM, Ford, and Chrysler. But in the mid-1970’s, the first of the oil crises hit Detroit like a tsunami. Plants downsized and closed, leaving tens of thousands of Detroiters out of work and neighborhoods devastated. People started leaving the city in droves. That exodus left broad swaths of open fields where vibrant neighborhoods stood a few years earlier. By some estimates there are now in total about 40 square miles of vacant land inside the city limits of Detroit. And as the people left, this new prairie land was rapidly repopulated by pheasants, rabbits, and raccoons, ’possums and songbirds, along with the occasional fox or coyote. But it also brought some determined new urban farmers. As a result, by the early 1990’s, the Detroit Agriculture Network (DAN) came into being to provide a forum for exchange of information, resources, seeds, etc., among these new farmers.
