Conferencia de Forensic Architecture (FA) 

Festival Tentacular 22-11-2018 (Matadero, Madrid)

La conferencia se abre con una pregunta que realiza el director del colectivo, Eyal Weizman:

¿Qué ocurre cuando es el estado el que comete un delito y es el mismo que se encarga de investigar el caso?

Decide llamar a la conferencia The long duration of a second. Indica que precisamente en ese intervalo se tiene que tomar una decisión, es un tiempo indivisible y únicamente interviene el instinto.

Durante la conferencia nos presenta su trabajo a través de ejemplos de casos en los que han trabajado:

Killing in Umm Al-Hiran (Conflicto Israel-Palestina noche del 18 de enero de 2017)

Nos muestra en pantalla el vídeo que realiza un activista sobre un conflicto entre la comunidad de la zona y la policía. Se escuchan disparos en un descampado hay varios coches y agentes. Como resultado de ello, el director de una escuela se desangra dentro de un coche y no es atendido.

Al día siguiente, la policía comunica a través de los medios que un agente de policía es asesinado en un ataque terrorista, haciendo referencia al conflicto anterior. El ministro de Israel culpabiliza al partido comunista (palestino) y exige vigilancia y restricciones de paso a los palestinos de la zona, se les acusa de formar parte del ISIS.

La misma tarde del comunicado la policía sube un vídeo a Twitter. Es un vídeo grabado desde un helicóptero, es de cámara térmica y sin sonido.

Con este material FA comienza a trabajar y lo hace recreando la escena a través de la sincronización del sonido del vídeo del activista (donde se escuchaban disparos) y la imagen térmica de la policía. Descubren que se realizan unos disparos contra el mismo coche que después se estrecha contra una furgoneta de policía. Una vez detenido el coche, se realiza otro disparo.

El partido comunista apoyando el trabajo del colectivo, pero sin tenerlo muy en cuenta publica el vídeo que realizaron de la sincronización. Sin embargo, el ministro de Israel continúa desconfiando y afirma que es un montaje, que no encaja el suceso.

El caso continúa, los forenses descubren un disparo en la rodilla derecha del profesor (pierna que necesitaba para utilizar el acelerador del coche). Aun así faltaba por detallar si los faros del coche estaban encendidos, si no fueran así se apoyaría la teoría del ataque terrorista. En el vídeo de cámara térmica no se puede analizar, pero con la recreación 3D del espacio y una nueva recreación se comprueba que están encendidos.

Para FA es muy importante la colaboración del pueblo y sus testimonios, por ello con ayuda del hermano del asesinado descubren que la puerta del coche se bloquea a los 20Km/h lo que quiere decir que el coche detenido debería tenerla bloqueada (en el vídeo los agentes abren la puerta del coche sin problemas), realizan un escaneado 3D del coche para seguir investigando.

Los agentes se excusan con la teoría del intervalo de un segundo, donde si interviene únicamente el instinto humano defienden que no son policías.

Forensic Architecture se ha centrado en cuestiones como la expulsión de los Beduinos por parte del gobierno de Israel, el cual los acusa de ocupas. Por ello el colectivo se encarga de analizar las imágenes satélites de la zona para comprobar que efectivamente los asentamientos se encontraban antes de la llegada de los israelitas y que por tanto no son invasores del territorio.

Trabajan con artistas sonoros, los cuales han ayudado a reconstruir los abusos policiales a través de grabaciones sin imagen. Para casos así Amnistía Internacional pide colaboración al colectivo y de esta manera se han descubierto casos como el de Torture and detention in Cameroon que cuenta sobre la explotación a los presos en las cárceles y la presencia de militares estadounidenses gracias a la recopilación de imágenes de los militares en Facebook, con ellas FA pudo trabajar y reconstruir escenas para descubrir la zona de tortura.

La conferencia terminó con la mención de la oceanografía forense, con ella revisan casos de inmigrantes del mediterráneo hacia Europa. El estudio del el oleaje, las cuestiones meteorológicas y el espacio marítimo en general ayudan con casos con trabajos de mapeo, por ejemplo. No se centran únicamente en el campo terrestre.

Mi conclusión después de ver estos proyectos es que FA se mueve con el objeto de la verificación de las imágenes, no dar todo por sentado y crear lecturas más profundas. Creer que la imagen habla por sí sola es un error, se debe de tener en cuenta el análisis y no guiarnos únicamente de la imagen estética como dice Eyal, sino mirarla como un conjunto de datos a los que podemos ofrecer multitud de interpretaciones. Toda imagen que nos es dada ya está contaminada de un tratamiento y de una manipulación, tenemos que aprender a descodificarla y servirnos de esos datos para poder interpretarla.

La tecnología tiene un peso muy grande sobre este tipo de trabajos, realizar las reconstrucciones sin tener en cuenta el sonido, los tiempos de vídeo o la temperatura de la imagen hubiera sido imposible. Las recreaciones 3D, donde podemos visualizar con claridad la posición de los elementos y las estructura, permiten aumentar los puntos de vista de un suceso y nos ofrece pistas importantes que quizá no se hubieran tenido en cuenta con el material de dos vídeos y un audio. Lo mismo ocurre con el papel de las redes sociales, la cuales ofrecen información útil para realizar lecturas más profundas, detalles que no se tienen en cuenta. Es decir, gracias a estos avances podemos adquirir material muy importante para resolver unos conflictos concretos.

Representing Activism

On October 09th, Eyal Weizman of London based research group Forensic Architecture lectured at Carnegie Mellon University. The work of Forensic Architecture deals with uncovering the highest level of human rights violations globally, operating in flux between activism and research. The work relies heavily on the use of visual representation and uses this representation as an aid in presenting truths.

The activism displayed through the work of Forensic Architecture is unique from that commonly associated with the term. Activism is not a singular action and can take on multiple forms. The multidisciplinary team of researchers, architects, journalists, and coders at Forensic Architecture are all involved in a collective activism. They research and forensically decipher events by stitching together multi-media pieces of information to uncover injustice and promote open source truth. Eyal and his team are involved in a highly meticulous and methodical way of disseminating, challenging, and presenting information within a complex network of players. Throughout the body of work the practice has undertaken, the use of technological methods and tools has been imperative to achieving high levels of accuracy and impactful results.

By doing so, they are not trying to solve single problems, rather formulate frameworks that can be replicable and available for use in future applications by any individual. This open source model of operating is an example for architects and activists in the field aiming to project their work to create a larger impact. Through the UDBS collaboration with IDeATe and the Reality Computing class at Carnegie Mellon University, we utilize methods of physical computing and visualization to assist us in creating and communicating replicable processes relating to material re-use and the future of housing. We aspire to operate and create methodologies that are as meticulously detailed and activist driven as the work Forensic Architecture develops.
